Our French teacher made us watch this for French class because he loves it. Yeah... I was the only one who hated it and we have to write a review on it... It is not the nicest review lol. I really went hard on the filming of the whole movie and how big the budget was.
There's actually a joke in the balcony scene. Obelix, played by Gérard Depardieu, whispers poetry to Lovesix (which I believe is more a pun on "love sick") to help him seduce Irena. One of Depardieu's greatest role was Cyrano de Bergerac, in which Cyrano helps Christian win the heart of Roxanne. The difference here is that Cyrano also loves Roxanne. It's probably an reference that only French-speakers got. The actor playing Silentius is Alexandre Astier, who wrote the two 3D-animation movies "The Mansions of the Gods" and "The Secret of the Magic Potion".
Would you consider reviewing the first 3D-animated Asterix movie, Mansion of the Gods? I heard it's faithful to the original book, but I never read it so I wouldn't know.
I swear, your reviews make me realize that I need to look more into European comics. This movie is a cluster fuck but it gave me the hankering to actually check out the original Asterix comics.
Not only is disguising romans as druids to capture Getafix done to death plot line in comics and the animated movies, but it was ALSO used in the first live action movie! Iirc.
To his credit, Clovis Corneliac was a great Asterix- he's got the mannerisms and the cockyness spot on. It's just a pity he's hardly in the film. If this was Asterix in Spain- like Alain Chabat wanted it to be before he got let go of the project, I'd imagine the big action finale (SPOILER: Asterix vs the Aurochs in the roman arena) would have been flippin awesome.
To be fair, Lovestorix' story can work, but theres this problem. Lets say Lovestorix(LOVESIX) is a gaul from Massalia, who has met this Greek princess and they fell in love and our gang has to prepare him for olympic games
The only Joke what workt in this Movie was the Turtle Joke and this was used for the Promotion. If you have the Movie (T)Raumschiff Surprise on VHS, you got the only Part of this Movie what matters.
I love how the makers of the game went- uninteresting love plot? Nah! Lets go nuts and have alternative realities colliding! . And y'know- have Asterix and Obelix being the focus.

I honestly kept thinking you were constantly playing dialog from other media over scenes from this movie, you know, as a joke or reference that I just didn't get... But then I realized they were actually unedited scenes from the movie. The voices are so unfitting and the dubbing and sound mixing so horribly done that it genuinely sounds like half of the characters are dubbed using clips from unrelated movies.
I actually managed to catch the dubbed version of Mansions of the Gods in the cinema last year, I really enjoyed it, though some of the cast choices were a bit odd
I thought the Mansions of the Gods was great, a decent blend of being a faithful adaptation and the stuff they did add was pretty fun. Like The Big Fight there is a British AND American dub of the film. As to which I prefer...not sure. The one I watched was the USA dub and that was good enough.

I think it's both: This is set on an alternate universe where Caesar survived the Ides of March, so he is a Roman emperor. And yeah, Brutus is basically a Caligula in the making in this movie. No wonder why Irina is more attracted by Lovestorix.

Frankly, the video game tie-in was better than the movie. It was a quasi-sequel to the Asterix & Obelix XXL games.
