Three incredibly written community stories from the grim dark future of 40k.
Many thanks to everyone who entered the A vox in the Void horror writing competition. It was extremely difficult for the judges to decide on the winners as the bar was set so high by all of the authors who submitted their work.
But alas there had to be winners...

Imagine being his surviving crew though, you either become a chapter serf or they turn you into a servitor to hide a secret you don't even know about. That last line, "One way or another, they will serve," has some absolutely fucked implications.

I love how when they describe the power armor of the space marine in question you instantly go "uh oh"
The good thing is when you write stories like this with the "oh sh**" moment is that its totally plausible because among the trillions of individuals in the Imperium there are a VERY limited amount of people who has seen Astartes before and lived. Furthermore, you are a really informed person if you can tell the difference between loyal and traitor marines. Spikes and skulls usually give it away tho but to the average citizen meeting an astartes is like us meeting the Nephelim described on the Sumerian clay tablets 6000 years ago.

It had to have been a Blood Angel -- attacking someone like that without reason and screaming things like "Traitor" and "Horus", he was definitely suffering from the Black Rage.
@@Robert_Douglass specifically he was part of the death company, the black armor and x crossed iconography immediately made me cringe knowing what was about to happen.
A Drop in the Void displays the vital importance of knowing the difference between the noble "skulls and spikes" aesthetic of a Loyalist, and the wretched "spikes and skulls" aesthetic of a Traitor
The difference is subtle, but skulls next to spikes = loyalist but skulls ON spikes = traitor
Blood for the God-Emperor. Skulls for the Golden Throne.
What traitor legion is represented in A Drop in the Void? I'm not as well versed in the lore as Id like to be.

Those last two stories are the epitome of “I know something is going to go wrong I just don’t know what” and then they describe the armor and it’s like “oh, yep, they’re dead”

Ahhhh okay so it was a Night Lord, I was at first thinking it was a Thousand Sons marine, but the 8 makes it obvious now.

They're all in all rather clean looking for chaos marines.
@@boneman-calciumenjoyer8290 For what it's worth, the Thousand Sons are exiled loyalists and don't serve the ruinous powers until being forcibly turned into Rubric Marines. They only really attack the Eldar and other Xenos because they're still loyalists. Having a good standard of hygiene is just part of being not a disgusting devil worshipper. Sort of like how the Alpha Legion and Iron Warriors both tend to be perfectly normal because they don't actively or intentionally worship the Chaos Gods, more so use their *gifts* for advantages.

I'm glad to see you got the exact reaction I intended for the readers haha. Vox's delivery on that was perfect!
Perhaps a Space Marine Codex really could've saved the latter two one hell of a headache.. Getting those paint-schemes mixed up can prove to be rather detrimental to your health!
Remember kids when a big ship is filled with dead traitor heretics and one seemingly alive blood angel, do not in no condition wake him up.
The last story made me consider how irresponsible the blood angels are for letting their mentally ill brothers loose. They not only pose a threat to their enemies but to any civilian unlucky enough to cross their path.
It makes me realize just how terrifying Sanguinius must have been in the final battle against Horus.
To be fair, that battle brother was assumed dead after 200 years. Not to mention being in the death company. He wasn't the only one deployed to kick some black legion ass but he was the last man standing and without things to kill his body shut down and went sleeping.
The last story was so insanely good. Like god damn!

EDIT: Misconstruing the midnight blue for ultramarine and beaten gold for the worn armor of a Son of Macragge is an understandable mistake in the dark.
It is, nonetheless, a fatal one.

@@aceriverpirate9795 The "8" on his forehead. I was sure it was a Night Lord, but the 8 almost threw me off. Thought it might have been a Squad or Company number. The armor HAS to be Night Lord, the face and hair too.
A Drop in the Void is so well written it has you screaming at the main character just like any other horror movie

Warhammer 40k is a perfect place for horror.
Some would say that it’s hard to get scared of things when the protagonists are trained soldiers or genetically modified demigods in power armor.
But when you do it right, it truly works.
This is a great Halloween treat!
The Emperor made them know no fear for a reason ;)
It s the predator movie principle: the more badass and skilled your characters are, the scarier it is when they come face to face with something that actually threatens them.
I would agree completely with you and counter with " The Them" who would say such things. I always see the tiny sliver of hope ( Human Imperium and other pusherbackers) as nothing more than a failing flickering flash-light trying to hold back the endless dark. It's about forces beyond the arrogance of our most versed knowledge base. Then there's the inherent horrorific fetishism of holy suffering of the good guys.
all of the story in this one is told through the eyes of mortals though.

Please, allow me to introduce myself. I a dumbass who thought the Marine in "A Drop In The Void" was a Thousand Son until they mentioned the blue being midnight blue.
Same, the skinned flesh was also a give in.
I was at the edge of my seat near the end of drop in the void, my god I wanted to know what happens next and then the "don't worry human, we've come for you" heckin awesome

Black library can pack their backs and retire. You sir and your team make stellar warhammer audio dramas and stories. You capture the real essence of the world and the grim dark. But I would wish to see a lighthearted / comedy type of story one day. A day of horus just trying manage the cluster fuck that is his rebellion. Horus with a mug with coffee and another mug with pain killers for his headache 🤣🤣

@@secretpolice thank you! It's written Scylla, I wanted it to be a subtle nod to the myth of Scylla and Charybdis. Like Antarus escaped a bad fate to stumble unto a worse one.
Altough to be faire the night lord probably made it up on the spot to mock Antarus.

Blood Angels Seargent: Very well. Send them a vox transmission! Instruct them to remain put at their current location so that we may retrieve our lost brother!
Blood Angel: Sir! It would appear that based on the Traders description, that the lost brother matches that of a member of our Death Company!

Then the voice work and audio makes it perfect. Really a worthy successor of audio dramas.
