If I met Tom Wilson, I would never have guessed that he played Biff.
He's exactly the opposite of Biff in real life. Not only was he never a bully, he was actually bullied in high school. He drew on his experiences of being bullied in order to play Biff. People do need to realize that the actor is not the character.

They supply the money, which makes them feel they have the right to make dumb ass creative decisions about the movie regardless of whether or not it makes sense in the real world to do such things. This leads to what is commonly known as Executive Meddling and is much resented by anyone with artistic integrity or who happen to have more than two functioning brain cells.

I always felt that Tom as an actor was really strong in the Back to the Future film. Playing so many different versions of Biff so well, his crowning achievement for me was the western Biff which he knocked out of the park. The production was lucky they got some one like Tom.
Very underrated part of the BTTF cast. His ability to be comedic yet still make you outright hate his character is a testament to his acting ability.

If you ever go to film production school, they always use BTTF as the example of a movie that is as close to perfect as one can get. It's the golden standard.

I’ll look for it, thanks! I remember seeing you on Letterman around 1990, you were a great guest, very personable and humorous. I thought at the time how bizarrely funny it was that you had no idea what your wife’s job was. Not long after that, I gained a brother-in-law who worked for an aerospace company. We haven’t got a clue as to what he does. “It’s boring.” “It’s not an important job, I just work in a room.” Unimportant enough that the company once suddenly sent him to another location out of state to get them sorted out. We called him Secret Agent Man for a while. I asked him if the company picnic was awkward. He laughed, said he was pretty sure nobody socialized outside the office. Twenty five years later, we still don’t know what he does.

When I was scrolling down in the comments I heard him start the manure part and just as he started it your comment appeared ony screen. XD
I liked how Biff (or his descendants) had a brush with manure in each BTTF film. We all know the first one in our sleep ("I'm going to get that sonofabitch" (sonofabitch changed to "stinkin punk" in TV edit). The second Biff/ manure encounter near the end of BTTF 2 (and Terry almost thinking "am glad I finally got the manure back into the back of my truck after that incident earlier...wait! what the hell is that!? Oh shit! Not again!"). Then BTTF 3 and Mad dog Tannen, after calling Marty ("Clint Eastwood") yellow and getting their (Marty copying Clint Eastwood styled) showdown ("Fist full of dollars" parody), Mad dog gets a taste of something that his future descendant will get twice in 70 years down the road. Yes, I know Biff and Mad dog, I hate manure too.

I always wonder why he didn’t get more praise for that role, his role was obviously the hardest in that movie, he had to keep it somewhat consistent for all characters but have them be wildly different at the same time, the guy was really good.
Always great to see people prove they're much more than a role on screen. In tribute to this, I suggest we start asking questions Mr. Wilson doesn't hear as much, for example: How are you today?

BTTF has to be one of the best movies ever made. There were some unbelievable films made in the 80’s. Great times.

Tom Wilson in my opinion is such a talented actor given his role as the villain in Back to the future his roles had alot more range than all the other characters in the movie. His talent to bring the Biff character to life so well made the tension of the movie believable. And the fact that he can do comedy and play a guitar. Brilliant :)

While I love the back to the future movies I remember him best in the Wing Commander games. He was awesome as maniac, Wing Commander three is one of the best games ever made.

a lot of celebrities do get tired of being asked questions about the same decade of their life, but thomas f wilson didn't get angry or upset... instead, he chose to write a song about it! in my books that makes him awesum. kudos to u tom, and thank you for clearing all that up for us!
I've corresponded with Tom a few times and he is one of the nicest people to talk to. He's a very talented and funny actor and comedian. It's a shame that he is underappreciated by some people, but many of us do appreciate him. Thanks, Tom!
I watch the BTTF trilogy every once in a while(when you watch one, you NEED to watch all of them!), and I honestly think Tom Wilson was the MOST entertaining person to watch throughout! I love all the characters he portrayed throughout the Tannen generations, and to see him make light of all the questions he gets bombarded with, it just makes his characters that much more fun to watch.
Now imagine how nice all the other actors are who played your most hated villains.

I watched this video when I was like 8 after seeing the trilogy for the first time, laughed my little head off. I’m 20 this year and I’m now laughing my slightly larger head off.

Hey Tom, just wanted to say this to ya cuz I've been wanting to for a long time. While Doc Brown is indeed my favorite character from BTTF, you by far are my favorite actor from the films. The way you played the different incarnations of biff and his family were flawless, multidimensional acting like that is a rare talent. It is that kind of acting that truly blows me away, and you are a very gifted entertainer and deserve everything you have and more! Much love to you and your family sir

In Australia in the 90s there was an informational ad that played at the start of EVERY vhs release of EVERY movie - a family going into a video store and watching previews of variously rated movies, to demonstrate the usefulness of the movie rating system. (The G rating used a laughter scene from The African Queen.) The pick for PG was Buford Tannen, "Especially not some duded up egg sucking gutter trash!" Which because of that ad might be one of the movie lines I've heard most often in my life - I'm not joking, I would hear it before EVERY movie for a DECADE.
And eventually I got around to watching BTTF3 and learned that the line wasn't from an old Western!

One of the greatest trilogies ever made. I adore the Back to the Future films. With Hollywood's desire to keep milking things or rebooting things? This is one that I don't feel should be messed with. The trilogy as it exists is a complete experience. I recently picked up the 35th anniversary steel book set.

I'm sure I saw this in a cracked.com article and just love the way Tom Wilson manages to deal with a real issue in a comedic way. Personally I always thought he was great in the informant, which was a truly underrated comedy. It's one of those movies you can watch over and over again

Saw him in the movie "April Fools Day" in the 90s and it took me a rewatch to realize who it was. He played a normal guy in it.

I could watch this every day. Tom was very underrated in this movie. His multiple roles were fantastic. Buford Mad Dog Tannen was my favorite.

That checks out. I met Adam Sandler when I was a kid, and he was super nice. He invited my mom and I to the set of Billy Madison because he was staying at the hotel where she worked. It was during the dodgeball scene. He stopped filming just to come and shake my hand and say hello, then went back to work. Also, Gary Busey gives off the vibes, so I believe that, too.
I wish Thomas Willson was still in movies or on TV. I would watch the crap out of that.
I'm watching freaks and geeks for the first time, and was like "Oh this is good, 'Biff' is playing the gym teacher" when you made your first appearance. I'm now on episode 14, dead dogs and gym teachers and was reading an analysis of the episode which led me here. ANYWAY I just wanted to say, a decade and a half late, that you have a phenomenal presence in this series and this episode especially (along with the sex ed and softball episodes) had me smiling from ear to ear and even shedding a few tears in the process.
Hope to meet him someday. Really like his jokes, songs and stories. He's more than just Biff.

Since the very first Back To The Future, we can't possibly imagine another person being Biff. Nobody could have ever pulled off Biff as you did. To act a part like Biff had to be difficult as there pretty much wasn't any books to go by which goes to show you created the character with raw talent. The only problem is with the character being so strong I can't imagine you playing any other role other than Biff. And we can't forget "BIFF! BIFF! WHERE YA GOIN' BIFF?"
