We all fall in love with Howl since the 1st encounter, but we grew to admire Sophie through her struggles. She is, in my opinion, one of the strongest female character ever. When the witch turned her old, she didn't complain, but just composed herself & sucked it up. She struggled in her old body, but is determine to break the spell. She faced the fearful creatures with compassion and even finds humour in her crazy situation. Discovering this film at the age of 26, in the crazy world right now, I found her calm strength to be truly inspiring.
I first watched this when i was 8 and fell in love instantly with a child's heart and now that I'm 18, now that I fully understand how good the story is, I fell in love more. Sophie has a kind heart. She shouldn't feel that way , she's young but her mental state is old, she's workaholic and never confident of her beauty
I agree. The one thing I would criticize her for was she was really unfair and mean towards the fire demon in the beginning, but she does eventually change that too.
Yes, Disney could never make a movie like this. After all, they will at least try to write a more or less logical script with an understandable plot, and not an incoherent ending that breaks the plot lines without a logical conclusion.
If you thought you understood this movie, think again! These "facts" will help you better understand a complex plot of this movie: *1.* In the first scene where Howl and Sophie meet, Howl says "I've been looking for you" because he really was looking for her. In fact, his ring was shining to find her in that scene. *2.* Howl was already aware that the old granny, Sophie, was actually a young lady from the first sight. *3.* Then he broke a spell by erasing the burn on the table. *4.* The spell Sophie got is not just making someone older, instead it is changing someone depending on its mind. *5.* That's why Sophie still remained old after Howl broke the spell. *6.* Calcifer says "You got complex spell" to her because he knew the fact 4. *7.* Howl says "Though the burn disappears the spell won't disappear" because he knew the fact 4 as well. *8.* Howl met Sophie when he was a child. So he's been looking for her. *9.* Howl gave her a ring saying "For your safe return." But he meant not only to his castle, but also to his past. Howl knew she would go back to his childhood. *10.* During the movie, Sophie gets older or younger, back and forth, because the spell is up to her mind. *11.* Howl wanted her to stay young because that was the only moment she likes just the way she is, gets confidence and obediently expresses her feeling for Howl. *12.* Howl moves to her born house in order to change her mind. In fact, she remembers her young memory and gets young. *13.* Howl looks sad when she gets old because of the fact 9. *14.* Howl transforms into a bird because then he gets stronger powers from Calcifer. *15.* That's why Calcifer warns Howl "If you keep on flying, one day you won't be able to get back to human". *16.* Howl was almost becoming a monster and there wasn't much time left to wait for her. *17.* Howl made a contract with Calcifer just because he wanted to help him. *18.* Stars die when they fall into ground. You can see some of them disappear into a river when Sophie goes back to the past. *19.* Making a contract is not a good thing for both Howl and Calcifer but they didn't know it at first. *20.* Howl says" Why? I've been escaping enough. I got an important thing to protect. It's you". Howl has been hiding from Suliman and the Witch of the waste by moving the castle and having lots of fake names. But this time he couldn't move from Sophie's born house because he could do nothing but to wait for her to change staying there. (see fact 11) *21.* In a dream, Sophie meets Howl transformed into a monster bird badly. He says "You can't even break your own spell!" and this is because he is waiting for her fighting in a war and protecting her. And he also says "It's too late" meaning he became a bird too much and can't be a human any more. It's just a dream, but she couldn't understand the meaning correctly. *22.* Sophie says, "I'll keep on walking." when she gets back from the past. It's a reply to Howl's words in the first scene. When they walk in the sky, Howl says "Keep on walking". *23.* Her ring breaks when she saw him in a childhood because that was the main purpose of a ring and it's done. She finally understood everything at that moment. *24.* After that Howl was waiting in front. She says "I'm sorry, you've been waiting for me all this time, but I couldn't get it." This line is because of the fact 21. *25.* When she kissed him, he was not moving. That's because he was really on the point of a monster as a dream said before. He was running the risk of it, but just waiting for her protecting the castle. In fact, his body had grown really big in the scene. *26.* After she understood everything, she stopped thinking of herself badly and didn't get old anymore. *27.* Her hair remains in silver because she stays young in her will and not because her spell was completely vanished. *28.* Howl fell in love with Sophie because she was actually a witch with a power to make creatures alive. He didn't have his heart and she was filling that emptiness. *bonus fact: I didn't write any of this, I've just copied it.

Anyone who noticed that Sophie said near the end of the movie (when she saw Howls backstory and how he made the bargain with Calcifer) she said to him "Wait for me in the future" In the beginning when Howl and Sophie first meet he said "There you are, sorry I'm late. Where have you been"
@@blushuwu911 he was actually looking for her his whole life, that's why he said "there u are sweetheart, I've been look for you" and he pretended to be her bf
i thought he was a player before meeting sophie? thought he talking to multiple women and even got rejected by one to the point to have a mental breakdown. did he really wait?
I just realized that one of the theme of this movie is women empowerment. Sophie's character was shown to be really fragile, but as the movie progresses, her character developed into someone strong-willed. Sophie's love for all the characters in the Castle, (even the Witch Of The Waste) saved everyone. Sophie loves Howl and was saved by her, and through that, Howl's love saved Sophie from the curse. It wasn't Prince Charming who kissed Sleeping Beauty. It was this young lady's love, powerful enough, to set them free. And spoiler alert, Sophie kissed all the characters in the Castle, her love, lift the curse.
“Many of my movies have strong female leads-brave, self-sufficient girls that don't think twice about fighting for what they believe in with all their heart. They'll need a friend, or a supporter, but never a savior. Any woman is just as capable of being a hero as any man.” -Hayao Miyazaki Chihiro, Nausicaa, Sophie, Kiki, San, Ponyo. Miyazaki's films are full of positive examples of female heroes.
Almost All Ghibli films have female leads..... partially because Hayao lost his mother really young and like to give her strong personality to the characters. I am not sure it's about woman empowerment
I don't care how many times I see this movie, I'm 17 now and I first watched it when I was nine, every time I watch it I get absolute chills when I hear the first few notes of Merry Go Round of Life in the beginning. I'm a massive movie buff and I love films, but I've never found amovie that touches me as deeply as this one does. There's just something utterly fantasical and whimsical about it, but everything from the emotions to the character's are so fundamentally human. I always feel quite burdened with responsibility of trying to uphold what people think me to be (shy, quiet, respectfu, opinionated, kind and studious) and I really saw myself within sophie, even from a young age and it just reminds me to be who I am and fight for what I want, not what other people want. I don't think words can even explain how much this movie means to me, it's utterly breathtaking.
Now that you are close to the age of the main character, Sophie, has your interpretation of the message you received from the film changed a little from when you first saw it? Question from a Japanese.
I watched it today for the first time and I am 17 haha. It is really a good movie and I'd definitely recommend it to other people to at least watch it once in their lifetime.
Lets get one thing straight here guys. This film is NOT a Disney film. It is only dubbed and distrabuted in America by Disney, thats all they did, they did not create it or produce this amazing film it is made by Studio Ghibli.
I saw this movie about 12 years ago and it is still one of my favorites among the hundreds I've seen. Merry go round of life holds a special place in my heart.
I have been a fan of Spirited Away for years now but never was interested in watching Howl's Moving Castle. Last night it came to my memory and I decided to watch it on a whim. Oh my goodness! I should've watched this film years ago! It's so beautiful and the story is awesome. Definitely a new favorite!
He does not set her free she sets him free. Typical Disney to get that wrong. It is always the guy who is the hero. Gods forbid a woman can be the hero without dressing like a guy.
One of the best animated movies I've ever seen. I grew up with Studio Ghibli and when I saw Howl's Moving Castle for the first time, it immediately became one of my favorites. ❤
There is something about Howl that makes us fall hardly in love for him. HE IS SO HOT! His soothing voice and ways. Ugghhh I think Calcifer is in my body. HAHA
Nevertheless, Disney did produce the (original) Lion King, which I consider to be the best cartoon ever. Studio Ghibli has produced wonderful, imaginative works but I prefer Disney at its best. This is not just a personal opinion: IMDb has Howl's Moving Castle at 8.2 and The Lion King at 8.5.
@@minsapint8007 lmao stfu just because you think lion king is better does not mean everybody has the same opinion, and IMDb is not reliable enough because they have a bias towards western films and what are considered classics. Disney has great films but they are still a company that kills creativity in film.
this is the best animated film andit will stick in my heart forever. its aesthetic, atmosphere, characters, everything is so perfect. So many secretly hiding meaning of things like howl's heart. wish i haven't discovered this yet until now. couldn't find any film like this. love all ghibli's though

Tom Divis yes but what I’m trying to say is Disney didn’t do shit it was all Miyazaki and the minds behind ghibli studio, Disney just slapped their name on there acting like they participate on making the movie when they didn’t do shit :) also I’m pretty sure If Disney made this movie it would of turned out like shit and PG cuz trust me in the movie they show 🍑😂 and Disney would never do that, only ghibli and Miyazaki have those talents to make that beautiful movie
@@amberscrocodiletears ...I mean, Disney is the distributor of the film and they gave full credit to Miyazaki as his film and full credit to Studio Ghibli producing it? Why wouldn't they put their name on it? This is generally how, you know, releasing movies work???

Dude I have seen this trailer when I was so little I thought I had only saw this in a dream. I couldn't find the this movie at all for two decades and gave up on looking for it. Now I finally found it by pure chance. 😅
+prashanth yadav Basically every Hayao Miyazai movie is worth watching, and although they are not all similar most have a similar theme and feel. You should try spirited away, and princess Mononoke but I recommend watching most of Hayao Miyakazi's work because I haven't come upon even one of his movies that I disliked.
Miyazaki's '' Whisper of heart is also a good one you won't find more similarity in subject than this. Makoto shinkai has also made extremely good anime movies on similar subjects. You must watch some of those.
The fact that these notes in this particular pattern make hundreds of humans feel the same longing and nostalgia for something that doesn't exist....that's magic. That is what magic is.
I watched this 3 times in a row last week. Like 3 consecutive days. It is so beautiful, I don't care how fancy technology gets, nothing matches the genius and quality of Studio Ghibli. And of all of the productions, THIS is my favorite. I remember seeing this when it first hit the small screen, and I had tuned in part way through. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen any Studio Ghibli film from the beginning, the first time I come across one. I think I was only 5-6 minutes from the start of Spirited Away, and I still haven't seen all of Kiki's Delivery service. Anyway, with this one, I didn't know the name of it, and I was so drawn to it, but the way they illustrated the Witch of the Waste, especially wither her head back so you just saw these cavernous nostrils, that stuck with me in my nightmares like no horror movie ever had. Everyone says the flying monkeys from the Wizard of Oz are the worst, scariest, but the way they illustrate an old woman sleeping as having nostrils about ten feet tall gave me the creeps. It was years later when I finally learned the name of it by accident, on a special about Hayao Miyazaki that I finally learned the name, and I've seen it many times since. What is not to love about this . . .movie? It seems trite to call it a cartoon. Animated retelling of Diana Wynne-Jones' work. I am now 51 years old. I feel and look like the cursed Sophia far more now. I didn't know how good I had life back in 2004 when this came out. Every time I see this, I cry. It's silly, I know. It's not like it's a shocker, but I cannot help it, it's a beautiful story. And sad. And lovely. It's the same with favorite books and movies. Sometimes something resonates so strongly, you cannot help but keep going back to it, like a group of old friends, and I can still laugh out loud at a Terry Pratchett novel, or cry -ugly cry- Every time I see Emma Thompson's character trying desperately to pull herself together in Love Actually -- listening to Joni Mitchell, and watching a woman realize everything you realize the moment you learn you've been betrayed by the one person you loved most in the world. But it's Christmas eve and the kids ae waiting so she gives herself a minute to crumple with pain and loss, before pulling it together. It kills me every time.
I've been listening to a lot of peaceful music, and this is by far the most amazing piece. It instantly took my spirit flying over beautiful oceans and mountains. Thank you for creating this sheer peace itself !!
i just watched this and spirited away a week ago, how tragic and now i've been playing that 2 movie ost every day... and every time i listen to the ost it feels like im living in the movie, so beautiful
I want to live in that world of majesty and love, that is filled with music and colors and breathtaking landscapes. Living with Howl sounds pretty cool, especially in that moving castle.

Anyone who noticed that Sophie said near the end of the movie (when she saw Howls backstory and how he made the bargain with Calcifer) she said to him "Wait for me in the future"
In the beginning when Howl and Sophie first meet he said "There you are, sorry I'm late. Where have you been"
@Timberwolf Yea, he was pretending to be her boyfriend so the guards could leave her alone.

@@powsvalentine good luck being a fangirl
Any woman is just as capable of being a hero as any man.” -Hayao Miyazaki
Chihiro, Nausicaa, Sophie, Kiki, San, Ponyo. Miyazaki's films are full of positive examples of female heroes.
Almost All Ghibli films have female leads..... partially because Hayao lost his mother really young and like to give her strong personality to the characters. I am not sure it's about woman empowerment
@@neilb143 that is woman empowerment though
*exemplar to women... or *recognition of women capabilities...
I really wish Western entertainment would learn a thing or two from the way that Myazaki writes his female characters.

It's SO ANNOYING! But funny at the same time thinking that Suliman probably casted a quiet spell on it cause it couldn't stop barking hahahaha
What timestamp? What dog? Am I crazy, I rewatched it 5 times.
The model of that dog is Mamoru Osii. He is dear friend of Hayao Miyazaki.
Seriously, the dog was just so comedic. Besides his wheezing, he had this deadpan face, which made it all the more funny!
Still can't explain why I have chills everytime I hear this music. So in love with this story

Walt Disney Studios presents a film Walt Disney Studios would have never produced...
Period 💅🏼
Nevertheless, Disney did produce the (original) Lion King, which I consider to be the best cartoon ever. Studio Ghibli has produced wonderful, imaginative works but I prefer Disney at its best. This is not just a personal opinion: IMDb has Howl's Moving Castle at 8.2 and The Lion King at 8.5.
@@minsapint8007 lmao stfu just because you think lion king is better does not mean everybody has the same opinion, and IMDb is not reliable enough because they have a bias towards western films and what are considered classics.

Miyazaki never dissapointes us! His movies have something magical and innocent 💗
I don't think that Disney have something magical and innocent.
