    I have driven both (older versions) in my time and if had to spend all day in one of these I would choose the Volvo as long as the cost's were as good as the same. If I owned a fleet of trucks I would have no problem having both in my fleet. The Kenworth has the cool factor on its side and the Volvo has the comfort side covered, not counting sleeper room. The last truck I owned was a FH12 Volvo. Both will get the job done and keep the driver happy!
    Fan boys will not see the good in anything other than their favorite.

    It's actually a huge difference in fuel consumption. There is a difference of nearly 3 liters every 100km. so say you are running 100 000 km a year, you lose 3,000 liters of diesel per year. I do not know the prices in Australia but here in Sweden cost of diesel 10 SEK / per liter.
    That's 30,000 SEK A Year (4284 Australian dollars).

      Hah, what a load of shit. What mileage you get, 42l/100km? Listen dude, there's no point in arguing over that, because even you know that you are talking bull. European trucks get mileage way below that, with heavier loads and roads that have steep hills and curves. There's just no way a US truck could do stuff euro trucks do.
      My father has seen and driven a truck that has had over 30 oil changes and the oil was always warm. That thing was running 24/7. And the reason why we haven't put truck engines in a tank is because we like to put tank engines into tanks and truck engines into trucks.

      18 litres difference In 3500-4000km isn't much and the Volvo will save 30 dollars but the kw was a bit quicker so really both trucks are neck and neck

    • @Renatubie13

      The average life of a semi truck in America is about 1 million miles. At $4 a gallon, the Volvo would burn only $61086 while the kenworth would burn $64048. So over the life of the truck, the kenworth would only cost you an extra $3000. I would think that kind of money is worth it if you do a lot of long distance hauling...

    • @kevintaylor7660

    You guys need to do a proper comparison . 1.73 v 1.65 is 99 litres for 3550 klm by my calculations . Thats 5577 litres in 200,000 klm . The ONLY way to compare fuel is to physically put it in the fuel tank . Oh and what was the difference in adblue usage too ?

  • @Predator27007
    @Predator27007 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    You are such angry people. You'd think someone was reviewed a member of your family. Trucks are tools!
    Now, trucks are tools for minimising cost. In this case, the Volvo was lowest running cost over 5 days. 100litres. Over 50 weeks that is 5000litres.
    Last time I looked, Euro truck engines were on longer service intervals than for US trucks. Lower cost
    The 'automatic' transmissions, as in modern cars, are so clever in determining best shift speeds, the fuel consumption is better than the best driver in a manual transmission vehicle. No clutch to replace. Lower costs.
    Statement of facts here: US trucks are component vehicles. By this I mean that, say Kenworth don't engines, gearboxes, axles etc. They select a DD, Cummins, Cat engine (always US because it's probably the law) Rockwell, Allison. Are these components the very best available? Lowest consumption, emissions, power, torque?
    Scania, Volvo, Mercedes, MAN have been the acknowledged leaders in diesel engine technology for a long time, optimised to their own gearboxes, axles aerodynamics, cooling. So, its Volvo, Scania, Mercedes engines to their gearboxes, electronically controlled for efficiency. This is not about who is the best driver cos I can double declutch a speed splitter crash box. Its about a tool, doing a job for low cost.
    As for durability, the assertion that Euro trucks are unreliable is simply incorrect. Like any tool, they just cannot afford to be. They are bought ( or should be) not cos "I've always liked the way a Volscanmerc looks" but because it performs. Euro trucks in UK and on the continent rack up 80-150,000 miles p.a. drivers on shifts. They do this at 44metric tonnes (100,000lbs) and just do the job.
    If KW, White, Mack do the same, cost minimising job, then buy them. But not for emotional, traditional reasons. You can do that with your private car if it matters.

      You are correct Nigel.

    • @rich7447
      @rich7447 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed.
      Cat is gone from the OTR game and DD is actually owned by Daimler. So are Freightliner and Western Star.
      Then there is PACCAR, that owns Kenworth and Peterbilt, but also DAF and Leyland trucks.
      Traton owns Man, Scania and Navistar International.
      So the argument as to which trucks are better is a little odd. The trucks are designed for the environment and regulation in the location that they are going to run in. North America has regulations that favor a conventional cab (bridge rule for instance increases allowable weight as the distance between the steer axle and the rearmost tandem increases). North American and Australian trucks also tend to cover more miles per year and work in harsher environments than the Euro counterparts. This favors slower turning inline 6 engine configurations, unsynchronized manual transmissions (although autos are and becoming more prevalent in NA) and conventional cabs, but Aus regulations go by overall train length so a conventional cab eats into your cargo area. Obviously the loss of cargo area is more important than the added aerodynamics or you would see more conventional trucks in Aus. By contrast the US and Canada only regulate trailer length, so there is no downside to a conventional tractor on large US roads.
      Europe regulates overall length and the average truck is not travelling nearly as far each year as one in NA or Aus. European trucks are also operating in much more highly populated environments on roads that were not specifically designed for heavy truck traffic. This pretty much rules out conventional trucks. Possibly running a V8 allows the cabover to be even shorter than it could be with a L6.

    Volvo all the way - been driving Volvos since starting out - that Kenworth looks like a 60's throwback compared - I don;t care how much extra bunk space it has - it still has a pop riveted ally cab, almost certainly a non synchro crash box, no air assist clutch, all things any self respecting European driver would expect as standard fare since the early 70's.

    That Volvo FH looks like a very smooth, quite and comfortable ride. All though the sleeper berth space is ridiculously small because the euro length regulations, I don't see why they won't accommodate other markets with more spacious deeper cabs. The earlier FH model had a deeper sleeper for Australia and Norway in Europe. I'm sure that Volvo will develop a larger sleeper new FH cab for Australia at some point. Scania produced the R "Longline" cabs for few years. It had a huge sleeper with over two meters from behind the seats to the back wall and the bed was placed along the right side wall instead across the back of the cab. That was the largest sleeper on a COE cab I've ever seen anywhere in the world. It should've been offered in the USA and Canada if it wasn't for the CRONY capitalists that protects the american truck manufacturers from competition. The Scania Longline would've killed the american truck manufacturers if they would've offered that truck on the N A market.

    I respect the European trucks for their safety and comfort, but as a driver I like a truck that looks like a truck, sounds like a truck, and feels like a truck, and provides some challenge as a driver i.e. Road Ranger gearbox over the european synchro or, even worse, automatic gearboxes.

You should be free and have the opportunity to purchase whatever brand of truck you like and better suits your business. In comparison, here in the USA we've got only the amerikan brands of trucks which future only amerikan design and drivetrains. Even the Volvo NA VN models are mainly amerikan designed and some come with a modified volvo engine and the ishift transmission. The rest of the junk is Amerikan. The USA has a CRONY system when it comes to trucks. They don't want competition from superior competitors on their market. Gents, axle load limit is much lower in North America because we don't have the quality of the infrastructure the europeans and other regions around the world have. We have allot of freeways and all sorts of roads that spread the continental US, but the strength and quality leaves allot to be desired. Thus, we have archaic rules and laws like the famous "bridge law" which excessively limits axle load capacity and requires absurd axle spacings. That's why we have to deal with archaically designed and ridiculously long heavy haul equipment which is supposed to spread the weight over a larger area of the road and consequently a ridiculous amount of dead weight in order to transport heavy freight. In another words, we here in NA have to use 1/3 more rubber on the road in order to transport 1/2 of payload weight the europeans do with less axles, less steel, less tires, less deadweight, but more power and more reliable equipment. For 5 axle NA configuration (1+2+2 axles) hauling general freight we're limited to 80,000 lbs GVW (36.35 metric ton) using unnecessarily tandem drive 6x4 tractors. The europeans haul a payload of just about the total NA GVW limits in their 5 axle configuration (1+1+3) which eliminates an extra differential with a power divider, extra costs and extra deadweight. North America talks allot about efficiency in road transportation, but they're the most inefficient at it in the whole world! And that's the naked truth!

    If I've understood his deep Australian accent correctly: 95-100km/h is not economical speed. Volvo makes their trucks to do 83km/h, not more. The aerodynamics sets the limits. From 83km/h to 90 you will have increased your fuel consumption by 15% with a speed increase of 8%. It's also electronically limited to 90km/h because the highest allowed speed for a truck in Europe on a high way is 90km/h without a trailer. With a trailer it's 80km/h. On any other roads that are not highways the speed limit for trucks is 80km/h even if it says 90 on the sign. If it says 80 it's 80 , 70 means 70 for you too (I wouldn't go above 60 anyways) 60 is 60, 50 is 50, 40 is 40, 30 is 30. As simple as that.

European trucks tend to have better suspension, and if you want, you can get them lifted from factory. On TV you see the drivers driving on what sem to be a relatively wide, nice gravel road but they're flying around in the cab. We go out in the middle of the forest, on roads where your tires are literally in grooves so deep they go above your ankles and with thousands of potholes and the driver is still sitting relatively comfortably in his seat. You don't need an apartment on wheels, no matter how much time you spend in it. You spend the absolute majority of the time either in the driver's seat, in the passenger seat or in the bed, anyways. Scania and Volvo come with fridge freezer under the bunk, if you order it with that. There is space in the central storage space above your head for a microwave and 2 more storage spaces for dry food products or otehr stuff. European trucks are much better in handling and comfort and safety also. But American truck are much about rough trucks.

    Those K200’s arnt classed as a kenworth in my eyes, plastic grille (in shape of a love heart I might add) smart wheel (not so smart when they fuck up) Volvo style doors and handles, I think there more of a “volworth” nowadays and such a shame that the older model trucks/engines are getting way better fuel economy than these new hunks of plastic fantastic snot boxes
