  • Trucksales jumps behind the wheel of Kenworth’s new cab-over for a quick run from Melbourne to Mildura. Flying ‘under the radar’ isn’t an option in the new Kenworth K220 - especially when you’re in one of few prototypes in existence and rumbling along the open road on a multi-state dealer and customer roadshow. Then again, the tri-axle tautliner out back, boldly emblazoned with ‘Next Level K220’ in towering letters, wasn't exactly subtle.

Not many drivers like cabovers. I started driving in 1995, in a 1991 International Cabover. Makes it easier to get in some places, but the overall ride is terrible since you are sitting on the front wheels.

Caboovers have been done away with here in the States since they are harder to get in & out of & takes more time & effort to jack the cab up/down for the engine access & your riding on top of the steer axle which gives the driver a rough ride.

I,m not sure mate, but i can tell you it was an American woman who led the design team in Melbourne. I watched a video about her on here. All the parts come out of Paccar, And we covert LHD Peterbilt's and American cars all the time here.

You can get an extended cab as well. However, Australian truckdrivers do not do massive distances. They typically just swap trailers with another driver at a mid point. They basically never live in the truck. It's a different culture to US truckers. I'm travelling in the USA now from Australia. Your roads are ten times better and so much wider than Aussie roads. Cab overs are definitely required to turn a b double in the badly planned streets of Sydney.

  • @SinOjOs-Transport

Cool, yet every model, version, has its advantages & disadvantages. Bunk area is limited. I love the old cabover's. Yet living space for when you are on the road for weeks and or months. Really need more space.
Best is the custom sleepers with a shitter & shower. Really suprised not one manufacturer has those options from the factory. Lots of custom sleepers on the road. Shows there is demand.
Cabover is perfect for day runs. Yet not so good for long term runs. If they would build a longer wheel base with a big ass sleeper custom sleeper with shitter & shower. That would be awsume. As the wheelbase would be much shorter than having a 144" sleeper on a long nose.
A cabover with a 120"-150" sleeper would be awesome. Still be able to get in & out of tighter locations. The ARI 144" sleeper is popular. Yet limits due to longer wheelbase. Bolt also builds awsume sleepers.
Just need to win the lottery. Smuggle one of the new KW 220 in to the US. Lengthen the wheelbase, set it up so the cab tilts, yet leaves the sleeper so all your shit don't hit the windshield.
Shorter wheelbase, shitter, shower, cooking range, table & big ass bed!
