I lived in New York a couple of decades ago, and would volunteer with the CFR's. What struck me was that they were certainly very active - being Friars, of course - but that they really did make room in their day for silence, in addition to the Mass and the Breviary. One of the best days of my life was with the Friars. They can make poverty be a rich, wealthy thing.

Where there is simplicity, there is silence, where there is silence there is God❤

Thanks for this... There's such pressure to have a jam packed schedule and the more activities meant you were more productive and part of society. I followed this for the better part of 15+ years. Glad to say that I am learning to be silent and be still.

Thanks for sharing this. When one of our bishops visited our village, he said one of the things that he's learned from the Yup'ik is being comfortable in silence.
I appreciate you being here !

Huge fan of simplicity. I think you definitely can over-simplify things though; that’s essentially what I think the reformation was; an over- simplification in response to the problems in the western church at that time, but I think we need to strive to live as simply as we can without throwing out things that are truly important that might sometimes seem like unnecessary activities or even luxuries; like being too busy for exercise or healthy cooking or having too many urgent things to do so you never get enough sleep.

Silence generally has a beneficial effect of reducing neurosis.
However, in exceptional situations, like those explored by James Pennebaker (writing therapy), silence can have a negative effect on health.

Abdul said he sounds like he is on drugs or something. He is on “something” it is called Grace - gift of the Holy Spirit. Not discerned by the intellect. Touches the soul not the mind.
