    I don't really care about the screen positioning because I'm only behind the camera, but the rig mods look pretty inventive and useful!
    I think the M5 would be the way to go for me, still deciding, for its two-handed ergonomics, thanks for the comparison, though!

    Liked this video quite a lot. You did a great job outing who these two models are for. If the M50 was intended as a replacement it seems what they were actually doing was emphasizing videography ... which is more Canon's statement about what they think people want for a camera in this price range, rather than "an improvement" to the M5 necessarily. Looks like you have a Part 2 so I'm headed there now :)

    Hi joseph, I am currently making the switch from my Canon 7D to the EF-M platform. I already have a Viltrox Speedbooster, a viewfinder is a must, and I am trying to figure out what my best option is for general, and sports photography. Would you recommend either the Canon M5 or the M50?

    • @JosephKim
      @JosephKim  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your aim is to make the jump to EF-M platform and you are more photo focused, I think M5 is a better option. M6 Mk II is great, but is without the viewfinder.

    thank you for this very useful video! Just a question: which camera has the best grip? Which one is more confortable when grabbed? From this video M5 seems a little bit bigger and, beacause of that, more confortable in the hand... insn't it?
    PS: sorry my bad english....

    • @JosephKim
      @JosephKim  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The grip is probably the same, and difficult to judge. But M5 has more accessible dials, and as it is metal build, has more weight and rigidity.

  • @bagusa1951

    In 2020 what would you recomend for photography the m5 or m50 ? Wich one do you think would last like 5-6 years later (durrable for long time)? Sorry for asking so many question because i been saving up for 4 years to buy a camera and afraid to buy the wrong one ✌

    • @JosephKim
      @JosephKim  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My answer would be the same in 2019 or 2020 as they are quite unlikely to get any feature update via software. Also, in typical photography, lenses last more than a decade, camera bodies don't. Maybe 2-3 years. For general photography, M5 is better. M50 is better for selfie mode videos, and a bit better smart features such as connection to your phones and computers to control live view mode.

    • @GrantMcWilliams
      @GrantMcWilliams 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The m50 allows you to focus during video with the Android app whereas the m5 doesn't. The m50 has cropped 4k video but without dual pixel autofocus (somewhat limited usage). The m50 can shoot one frame per second faster. The m50 has more autofocus points with all lenses. With older lenses including the two kit lenses it has 99 autofocus points as opposed to 49 for the m5. If using the 18-150, 55-200 or the 28mm macro the m50 has about 150 autofocus points. Also the m50 has eye-autofocus but only for photos, not video.
      The m5 was designed as a more premium product along with the m6. Both are much better built than the m50, have multiple dials that can be used for different things. The front dial can be aperture, the top dial can be shutter and the back dial can be ISO. It has a dedicated exposure compensation dial. Any lens will have a manual focus ring. So with the m5 you can have a dedicated dial for the entire exposure triangle, plus exposure compensation and manual focus. The m50, you get one dial that can be used for one of those things. The other advantage to the m5 is that the LCD screen is 3.2 inches with 1.6 million pixels, the m50 screen is 3 inches with 1 million. The battery life on the m5 is also better as it has the larger E-17 battery as opposed to the smaller E-12 in the m50.
      For photography the m5 is just a nicer camera. For video the m50 is slightly better. The 4k mode is not very useful but being able to lock on focus using the app is nice. The m50's autofocus is better than the m5. The newish M50 mark ii has even more refined autofocus and a clean HDMI out (1080p) with autofocus which neither the m5, m6 or m50 mark i has (the m6 mark ii does).
      I hope this helps any future visitors to this video to decide. If they had upgraded the firmware on the m5 to include clean HDMI (get rid of the focus box) and allow it to focus with the app in video I'd choose the m5 over the m50. But they didn't so the choice is harder.

      @JosephKim  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol, there are numerous times where the users were frustrated with things going missing in Canon's line up. There is the drama between R and RP. It's almost like they put one thing in, and that causes one thing to fall out. I moved from SL1, and I did have that shaking fist moment with EOS Utility. How does it make any sense to create a video about the quality of video of two cameras and not display the exact footage from each camera? This video should be taken down for not making any sense.

    • @JosephKim
      @JosephKim  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This video is meant more for the general difference in two that impacts the user. Not specific to the video quality only. You can look at the specifications to understand the quality differences. They will differ based on your video quality settings too. Not sure just missing a direct comparison is a valid reason to take a video down.
