I am still of the notion of the Legion being Spacemarines who were betrayed upon Istavan 3 & 5, Calph, & others systems throughout the Hersey of Horus. There are whispered tales of a battles beneath the Emperor's Palace upon Terra, that the Emperor called forth those Spacemarines who perished by treachery including one of his slain favored sons fighting to shore up the incident.
@Anzu Wyliei My apologies I should have stated more events beyond the Hersey. The premise of mass betrayal of so many Spacemarines by brothers from other(traitorous) Legions in not being able to retaliate could be the largest number of the LOD. Then again the Emperor could have vast numbers of Spacemarines plus Ferrous Mannus, Sangunious, possibly the 2 unremembered Primarchs. It's interesting lore to ponder which why I enjoy the Warhammer universe as writers add to the Black Library of Games Workshop.
@Anzu Wyliei If I remember from Garro, that the Emperor & Malcador(even though Primarchs like Rogal Dorn did not trust Malcador because of his secretive nature) formed the Grey Knights with loyalist Spacemarines from their own Legions that betrayed them. So in effect there would be Deathguard, World Eaters, Emperor's Children, & others fighting alongside. I believe to the Emperor's wisdom of the outside pattern design of the LOD much like the Grey Knight one wouldn't know what Legion the Spacemarine(s) were originally from. The reason I've thought about the Emperor creating the Legion of the Dammed{Emperor probably has a different name for them} is from the books Master of Mankind & Celestine: the Living Saint, the Emperor leads her through trials and then back into world in an area say like Cadia where she & the LOD are needed most. Sometimes although fun for me to ponder sometimes I forget chunks of lore.
Wow, what a hidden gem this channel is. I can't believe I only just encountered it yesterday. I *love* people who make their own, extremely high quality contributions to the 40K lore. You and Oculus are top notch. Keep it up!
And yet its not the emparahh at all .. its an entity created by believe ... not even close to the individual the emparah was at living .. thereby not "reviving" his spirit ... but newly creating a god based on the worship of the emparah - as he never wanted to be worhshiped. Cuz he knew what worship created.
The irony is the Emperor is now a "God of the warp". Logars book and what the Imperium has turned into has done it. The most populous and at some level psychally active life form in the galaxy, in the majority, worship the Emperor. The legion of the Damned are aspects of fallen space marines given form and power from worship directed at the Emperor.

Excellent work. Personally I prefer the original '80s take on the Legion of the Damned, when they were a lost chapter (the Fire Hawks) dying of a plague contracted while trapped in the warp. There was nothing supernatural about them, but they were deeply tragic. They were knowingly doomed and determined to keep fighting until the plague finished them. They had special rules including the appallingly destructive 'berserk death spasm'. Their motto was "in dedicato imperatum ultra articulo mortis" (supposed to mean 'for the Emperor beyond the point of death').
Hahah, I love the the guy at 3:15 praising himself for having the cleverness to pray to The Emperor "even though the rest of them were busy shoutin and fussin with weapons and such like."

@mstrblik The World-Eater's are flesh and blood Space Marines. The Legion of the Damned are Warp Entities, the Souls of fallen Space Marines powered by the emperor himself. There is a big difference betweenst Living Space Marines dedicated to one of the ruinous powers as opposed to demons given form by the Emperor of Mankind.
As always I enjoyed the story I appreciate the reading the narration the voices that you put into it I look forward to the next when you release. As always a faithful servant of the Imperium.
I hold the opinion that the Legion of the Damned are the guilt ridden souls of the Astartes that escaped into the Warp during the heresy that had never fully given their souls to the ruinious quartet and are given a chance to earn redemption before being allowed into the light of the Emperor as a final reward. An odd hypothesis but it kinda fits with rest of the 40k lore
The legion of the damned always kind of gave me a chooser of the slain vibe. Not out and out valkyrie but giving form to those of strong will that die fighting for the imperium, not just astartes but all.
I like the idea that the legion of the damned might be loyalist marine survivors from an alternate timeline where Horus defeated the emperor and unleashed chaos on the galaxy. In such a timeline, the loyalists would adapt to survive in a warp ridden galaxy and have possibly learned of the timeline where the emperor defeated Horus and attempt to infringe on key points of this timeline to help prevent them falling to the same fate. I think this would open up so many new plot possibilities for the 40k universe to expand into while providing an explanation to the legions substance and objectives.
Unsure if brought up or known but the warhammer horror story "predition's flame" has something to do with this specific topic and I believe goes looked over too often. It's a great audio drama.
My hypothesis? Warriors of humanity’s future. A time when the Emperor has returned, innovation, science, and invention is back on track. This explains saving key individuals or groups that effect a noticeable favorable outcome for the imperium while whole other worlds are wiped out that never see them, and it explains their “supernatural” abilities (as any technology sufficiently advanced is going to be indistinguishable from “magic”). The emperor would want to push humanity to a slightly more favorable outcome if he had the chance. Especially during the time he was least present yet the imperium needed him most. He knows that his past imperium was SUPER religious fascist. So its easier for those inhabiting said age to accept the help of those that look like something they are used to. (Also explains why the armor and weapons LOOK familiar but dont seem to function similar or fire know ammunition.) The emperor’s prolonged connection to the warp and abolishment of the imperial cult would allow proper study and utilization of the warp instead of the inquisition mentality of “reeeee warp cuties! Kill it!” (This would explain the “warp like” abilities of the warriors.) *time traveling warriors of humanity’s far future clad in an Astarties overlay to seem more acceptable to crazy people times, trying to bring about humanity’s space renaissance a little sooner and with more pazaz* My 25 cents.

'Sometimes there is absolutely no difference at all between salvation and damnation.' - Stephen King M2 Salve in damnatio! They are Emperors Spirits of Vengeance
Okay so here's my theory you had the 2nd and 11th Legion. One of those is known as the Forgotten and the other is known as the purged. Now we come to the 41st millennium. You get all these modern manifestations on the behalf of the emperor such as Saint Celestine. What if the Forgotten primarch was tainted by the warp. The Emperor chose to keep chaos hidden from his primarchs. If the primarch was visually tainted it would have blown the top off of everything the emperor was trying to hide. So now we have the Legion of the Damned
Tbh, it is a popular theory that the soul of Ferrus Manus leads the Legion of the Damned. Not the Primarch, physically, but the sheer will and power of his soul
The Legion was listed in White Dwarf as a chapter who were trapped in the warp and inflicted by a warp disease. All of them are slowly dying and going mad but are truly, deeply, completely loyal to the Emporer. Pray hard enough and they may come and save you. They are not undead, they are dying but going down swinging. The emporer protects..... by sending the dammed.
