2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition Review - On- and Off-Road Test Drive

  • We get behind the wheel of the 2020 Land Cruiser Heritage Edition. In this video, Dan Edmunds drives a special edition of the vaunted Land Cruiser that celebrates over 60 years of robust off-road history. The Land Cruiser has indeed become increasingly civilized over the years. However, this special model includes subtle but effective changes that make it more attractive to those who plan to venture off the pavement.
The basic configuration of this special Heritage Edition remains the same as any other 2020 Land Cruiser. It has the same powerful 5.7-liter V8 and smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission. Its generous ground clearance and angles of approach and departure are the same. You'll also find KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System), a clever system of automatically disconnecting stabilizer bars that enable extreme wheel articulation off-road yet offer flat cornering on the pavement.
Functional changes to the Heritage Edition include the deletion of the side running boards, which improve breakover clearance significantly but do make it harder to step into. Inside, the third row of seating has been deleted since backcountry camping involves more gear than people. The permanent absence of the seat increases cargo volume significantly. Along with that, the center-console cooler box has been eliminated to allow for more storage options near the driver. Its loss isn't likely to be significant because a large cooler or a plug-in camping fridge will likely be one of the cargo items on board.
Visually, you can spot a Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition by its special gold-colored BBS forged alloy wheels. The headlight backdrops are blacked out, and the front end has black-chrome trim instead of bright chrome trim. Along with these touches, the chrome "snake blinder" body side moldings have been removed. Inside, you'll find black leather upholstery with gold stitching that matches the BBS wheels and a dark headliner. Only two paint color options are available: black and white. The cherry on top is a reproduction of the vintage Land Cruiser badge that first appeared on the legendary FJ40.
The Land Cruiser has always performed well off-pavement and on, and the changes alter the experience in ways that should appeal to the burgeoning "overlanding" community that likes to explore the backcountry. These are travelers who aren't necessarily seeking out black diamond trails but who want to be able to handle any unexpected situations that might arise - all while carrying the latest camping gear along with them. The Heritage Edition matches this use case more or less exactly.

I wasn't too fond of the design of the new land cruisers. I love the 1980s and 1990s design much better. Sure, it's an iconic and legendary vehicle, but damn, I thought it didn't look that well. Until... I saw one in the streets of Montreal. It was just a glimpse, I saw it for maybe 10 seconds. My head spun so fast as I recognized it and I swear to God I was star struck. It felt like I was witnessing a very special and rare occurrence. Right away, I fell in love with it. I don't know, there's something about a Land Cruiser that I just love.

I love my 200, but I would skip the Heritage Edition. The running boards are easy to remove (I've replaced mine with rock sliders). The third row can be removed in 15 minutes with hand tools. That roof rack adds a lot of noise and wind resistance in a truck that already gets poor fuel economy. And I really like the Coolbox in the center console -- on long trips across country I always have a cold bottle of water available. The BBS wheels are nice, but I wouldn't spend $3k for them.
The main disappointment I have is that Toyota didn't replace the infotainment system. Toyota, if you are reading this, put CarPlay into the Land Cruiser and will trade in my 2013.

    • @curelable
      @curelable 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

M1911jln Infotainment will be replaced next year with redesign. However new one will most certainly have a direct injection turbocharged engine and complex electronics which will negate any reliability long term. This 2020 is the last chance to get a reliable easy to work on vehicle of this type.

    Very Good Review!
We got our Black Heritage in late October. My wife absolutely loves it. (Me too)
No third row seat, no cool box, no running boards and no entertainment system is exactly what we were looking for.
This is our adventure rig and will not see much mall or big box store action.
So far, we installed a clear bra covering the entire front, replaced the tires with Toyo Open Country AT II (p metric XL load) and got some step rock sliders being built.
I think the Apple car play stuff is over rated. I had it in my previous vehicle and to be honest I didn’t care for it.
So, this vehicle is extraordinary and if you can find one, You should BUY IT!

Great review- I have a black Heritage Edition ordered and arriving in late December. Elimination of the 3rd row, extra storage versus cooling box, deleting the running boards and side body molding makes it more appealing. Apple car play or Android auto- could care less, Pandora and/or ITunes will do just fine connecting through the media option. I’ll pay more to fill up the tank multiple times versus owning unreliable SUV’s, the net expense favors the LC versus the competition. The roof rack is detachable by the way.

This might surprise some people.. The number one market for Landcruisers in the world is Australia.
We get a lot more models than most markets too, there have been 4 levels of 200 series, plus the 70 series (single cab, dual cab and wagon.
The 200 series is being dropped, the 300 series is coming later this year. For the last couple of years the 200 has only been sold as a 4.5lt twin turbo diesel with 200kW and 650NM. The non-diesel (petrol) version was only accounting for about 5% of sales so they dropped it. I ordered one of the last diesel ones to be imported, it's due very soon.
The V8 twin turbo diesel is getting axed, to be replaced by a v6 diesel perhaps.
The competing large wagons (Denarli, Escalade etc) aren't sold here. RAM and Silverado utes are sold here but in minute numbers in comparison to Lancruiser and Hilux.

Here in California, the price for one of these (including tax and license) is about $100,000. With the global pandemic currently going on, most people only have a fraction of the money they once had to spend on something this fancy. So, I don't see much of a market currently. I would guess that 99.9% of these will never be taken off road, and the majority will be used to go to the mall or the winter ski chalet of the 1% of the population who can realistically afford one of these. The smart thing to do would be to purchase one of these, keep it in a temperature and humidity controlled garage for the next 20 years, and then sell it for double what it cost today.

Love the LC and all that it stands for. I hope it never disappears because it has so much history behind it. Even though I can afford an 85k vehicle, buying one for 40k more than an equally capable 4runner with an added front locker just to get it scratched and dirty off road is a tough sell. The towing capacity is the only real advantage honestly.

ddtCA_MD_ahh I bought one of these over the 4Runner because it has much more acceleration and ride is a lot better. Both have poor gas Milage.

A tree just fell on my 2016 this week during an ice storm. Not a branch - a tree. I drove it to the body shop yesterday to dust off some bumps and bruises. I guess it's broken in now. I might sell it half a million miles from now, but then again I might not.

The fact that this is full-time 4wd, is a deal breaker. The Land Cruiser, was never supposed to be awd. It was supposed to be a fantastic Jack-of-all-trades, with an emphasis on higher-end luxury (as of late, if course. Originally, it was more off road focused).
Two wheel, four wheel, hi/low, range, with lockers. Why they would take that away from it is aggravating.

Just got a new 2020. It’s great. Loaded up but overloaded with technology. It’s missing car play and remote starting which should have been added to this nice of a car. I have a 76’ a FJ 40. I’ve also had a 1999 1/2, a 2008 and a 2014. I’m sorry to hear that they are scheduled to be discontinued in US in 2022.

Toyota got the nuts and bolts right on the LC long ago, and then they sat on it as a cash cow. Too bad it doesn't have a more economical (but still reliable) engine or cabin support that is up to the current standard.
