I always thought "backup mode" capability was linked to the invertor and not the battery, what feature of the battery makes it backup mode capable, is it related to the discharge capacity?
Backup Mode capability depends on the availability of a Grid Interconnection device that allows the battery and the solar panels to be islanded during a power outage. This prevents the battery from electrocuting an utility worker on a pole outside. In a consumption mode or non backup mode install ,the battery only works during regular grid availability. On grid failure, the battery shuts down since there is no Interconnection device. Such installs are cheaper and thus favored by installers looking for more margins. As long as you installer gives you the option, you decide what works for you. For many folks in CA, the non backup mode is much cheaper and may be preferable.
