      Kevin- You are not alone. It really is such a common fear. And the depth of it is that we are afraid of experiencing shame. If you can give yourself the grace to be imperfect, it will go a long way towards helping you find peace. For me, I remind myself often that Jesus was perfect so I don't have to be. I want to rest in God's grace for my mistakes and imperfections, and I want that for you, too.

      Purnita, I feel your pain. Remember, your mistakes don’t define you; they’re just a reminder that you’re an imperfect human like the rest of us! You have the “I’m so stupid” tape playing in your head all the time, though, which is hurting you. Try replacing it with, “You can do this, Purnita,” or even the simple prayer, “God, please help me understand this.” Celebrate your wins, and try to let go of your mistakes quickly.

      Khendy - When other people see only your mistakes, it usually has more to do with their shame than your imperfection. Hold your head high and remember that your character (who you are) is way more important than your mistakes (what you do). As a Christian, I rest in the fact that Jesus was perfect so I don’t have to be. And that gives me the freedom to say I’m sorry, release the shame, and move on. Don’t let anyone try to define you by your mistakes. You are beautiful and loved despite them.

    Making a mistake is a real reason to fear. Managers can't wait to stomp on you. One never gets any praise if something is done well since its expected. It's that simple. But one mistake and you will hear the whole day or for a few days over and over about what you have done. Managers can't wait to show their superiority and distinguish themselves so they in return will get praises from higher managers.
    In the company where I used to work we all avoided at any cost a manager. Senior managers pressure junior managers and junior managers pressure staff. The staff has to shut up and comply or else ... Dumb for the one who approaches one.
    50% quit their jobs me included. Now I have no job and I am scared to start a new one especially that I have now peace having no boss.

      I get it! I am in the process of working on creating a masterclass in Executive Presence, so managers learn how to communicate with their team in ways that will encourage engagement, encourage innovation, and encourage awesome people like you to want to stay! I hate that you have been treated so terribly. Your best bet is to find out from the people in your network what companies in your area have healthy culture, and apply there.

    I’m always afraid of making a mistake at my job but I also fear that my mistakes could lead to suspension or even termination. And often times when I have made mistakes the thought that comes to my mind is this, “Shame on me! How could I do that? I’m so stupid! I’m such an idiot! I should know better! I’ve been in this position for a year and a half! The next time I make a mistake I’ll be suspended or maybe even fired!” Or the other thought that comes to my mind is, “I’m probably already fired! My boss just hasn’t told me yet! But I’ll find out maybe later tonight with a phone call or text or tomorrow morning by getting a phone call or text or when I report to work!” Then I’ll have to job hunt and it won’t be easy!”

      It's so easy to revert to negative self-talk and to then jump to conclusions, isn't it? It takes serious self-discipline to speak positively to yourself, like an awesome best friend would talk to you. If you can catch yourself soon enough, you can turn your self-talk positive and say things like "You are doing the best you can, Michael. Don't give up. Mistakes are how you learn. You are covered by Grace. Rest in Grace. It's going to be okay!" That's what the Holy Spirit says to you, because He is living in you. So listen to Him.

When I think that I'm going to start a new job just the thinking fact destroyed me I think it's one of the reason that I'm afraid of getting a job. I think it’s time to say goodbye to fear because it isn’t serving you well. Your mind is trying to jump ahead and protect you, but it’s not helping. Letting go of your fear, trusting God that He put you in this job for a reason, and accepting imperfection may be the keys for you to be able to finally concentrate and do the good work you know you are capable of doing.

    Hi Heidi. Any advice for someone who has the irrational fear that a little mistake they make in their job could impact the whole business, and therefore keeps re-checking everything they do and feels the need to keep asking someone like their manager for confirmation?

    • @SpeakEaglewithDrP
      @SpeakEaglewithDrP  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question! If you’re the employee, it will take a conscious choice to do one thing and complete it without re-checking with a manager. That first time might be the hardest to trust yourself that you did it right. But once you’ve done it once, the second and third times won’t feel quite as scary. You could also have a conversation with the manager to ask if they would prefer you to check your work with them or not. Hearing that they don’t want you to check with them might give you the courage to do your work with more autonomy and confidence.
      If you’re the manager, it’s important to build the confidence and trust of the employee by letting them know you believe they can do this, they don’t need to check everything with you, and reassure them the business won’t fold if they make a mistake.

    Thanks a lot for making this video because I relate to this so much. I have mild social anxiety but for me it’s not that of a problem as much as fear of making mistakes at work and then making me feel that I look stupid afterwards, all these problems are because of my over involved parents doing everything for me and also judging me for making a mistake they also would do everything for me and tell me that “you can’t do that, I do it for you, you are not capable of doing that”.Even to this day as a 23 year old they still do these things and now that I’ve become an adult it’s hard cuz you have absolutely no self esteem and I also paid a lot of attention to my behavior in the workplace,I have trouble focusing cuz I ruminate a lot,I tend to ask so many questions before doing something out of fear of being judged or yelled by my boss and it becomes annoying for my coworkers. Idk what to really do but I really need to talk to a therapist cuz I’ve read a few psychology books and I can’t really deal with it on my own and I think it’s better to talk to someone who’s professional. And now that you are 23, you can hopefully start to break free of the control of your parents and decide on your own that you don't have to live in fear. As you grow in confidence and autonomy, I hope you can also find empathy for your parents- because they also are living in fear, which is why they want to do everything for you. I think it's great that you ask a lot of questions at work because I'll bet one day there will be someone who will ask you a lot of questions and you will know how they feel! Remember that making mistakes is a part of being human- and it's the best way we learn. Jesus was perfect so you don't have to be. May you find your identity in His strength and His love for you.

Thomas Edison, who eventually invented electricity, said, "I have not failed 10,000 times, I have successfully found 10,000 ways that will not work." Great question, Pappu. I think you give it some time, do your best right now to complete the tasks that they give you, and then at some point when you feel you have regained their trust in other things you can ask to have a shot again at doing the task in which you initially made a mistake.

    But i get scared that if I make a mistake in my work then the principal will fire me and i am the only working member of my family and Thus I feel overwhelmed sometimes.
    Like i am scared right now I am a substitute basis teacher in a reputed school and we have to fill out the marks of a student in a markbook and then we enter the marks on computer and it is not allowed to make mistakes in the markbook as we enter the same in the computer.
    But while writing my hands sweat a lot and I was using a ball pen to fill the marks and it got messy in some places, in three pages to be exact and when I tried to use a blade to scrub the extra ink and make it look ok, to correct my mistake somehow it got more messy.
    And secondly while checking the information from the computer I saw that I have written Green house instead of yellow house and again I used blade to correct it and make green to yellow and it got messy there too.....so that makes it 4 mistakes.
    And the thing is that the markbook is checked by out principal before they are printed out as result cards for the students.
    Now I am scared that principal will see the mistakes and call me out and fire me out of my beloved job.... Due to the lock down I was out of job for almost half a year and those were the most difficult times even sometimes I felt like I want to end my life but looking at my mom and dad who now look upto me I restrained myself under great stress and when I got back my job I couldn't come out of that fear... That trauma... What can I do?
    I am a new teacher in my school and an introvert and I don't know how to approach others for help and if I do approach for help they seem to not care enough... and I am a bit weird and I think it's because of my behavior and my personality and the other teachers also perceive me as weird too although they haven't told me directly but I can understand the subtle hints and eye to eye communication and the smiling among themselves when I say my opinions about something....
    I feel so constricted in there but that is my school.... The same school that I passed out from and I got a job in the same school... So it is kinda my place like my home and I want to be the best teacher in my school and want to work as a team but I don't know.... I feel so confused and alone and scared that I talk to myself and to the statue and cross of Lord Jesus Christ to share my feelings and I couldn't share my feelings at home since my parents are old now and I am working for them to support them and I don't want to burden them with my worries too. ....
    I needed to ramble out my feelings here.... I know no one will read through this rambling but if someone does then please provide an advice on how can I overcome my issues listed above.... Please earnest request to anyone who read this.

      Ratna- Thank you for not ending your life! You are making a positive difference in the lives of so many people, including your parents. We need you in our world. And even when you can't see it, believe by faith that God has a plan for your life and He sees you and knows you and loves you. We all have great fears and make many mistakes every day. No matter how hard you try, you will never be perfect. And that's ok. I have a feeling that even if you smudge the marks sometimes, your ability to teach far outweighs your mistakes. Teaching comes from the heart, and my prayer is that your principal will see your love for your students. Admit your mistakes, apologize if you need to, and then let it go and focus on loving your students by teaching them well. Maybe your mistakes will help your students be okay with trying something new and making mistakes, too. It's how we learn. Lead by example and your authenticity will be winsome. Thank you for venting to me. I appreciate you sharing your heart. Keep believing in Jesus as your Savior. He is perfect so you don't have to be.

      Hi Glen- I have been there, and I agree it’s agony! My best defense against anxiety is to say, “Well, I guess there’s another example of how I’m imperfect and human.” Because we can’t be anything BUT imperfect and human! The days I hold myself to the standard of being perfect are very anxious days because I screw up every day. To be human is to make mistakes. And that’s okay. Peace and grace to you!

      Sometimes the best thing is to resign and find a job that is more naturally suited for how you are gifted (and you ARE gifted!) Other times the best thing is to give yourself the grace to make mistakes, apologize when you need to, and then keep going, doing your best in a challenging job. • @dukiemon9365
    @dukiemon9365 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I still don't understand. The solution is to gradually allow yourself to make that mistake? Really? That in itself gives me much more anxiety than ever. It triggers me to not want me to do and feels counter-productive. Furthermore, When you feel the shame..."push it off with grace"?! That's MUCH harder for me than other people. How do I "gracefully" push it off like that when I'm already in a middle of anxiety and panic?!

    • @SpeakEaglewithDrP
      @SpeakEaglewithDrP  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Dukie mon- I can see your frustration with this. And it might not work for everyone. For me, imagining making the mistake helps me remember it’s ok to be human and it wouldn’t be the end of the world if I made the mistake. It can also help me come up with a plan, like simply admitting I made the mistake and asking for help. I also think sometimes I believe lies in my head like, “I’m such an idiot” and I need to replace them with truth that making a mistake doesn’t make me an idiot, it makes me human.

I try to communicate with her and it goes well but sometime I just feel like I ask too much, because her behaviour change.
    I always like to work organised and I help my colleagues if they need me, I feel good helping them and can be patient. But, I am also sometime sad about the mistakes I made as today and get worried over how they think about me. I can understand your sadness over making mistakes. I think we all feel it. It's fantastic that you are letting your colleague help you, and that you help your colleagues, too. If you colleague's behavior has changed toward you, it might be time to have an honest conversation to find out if you are truly asking too much. Or maybe her change in behavior is totally unrelated to something you are doing. I admire the fact that you are continuing to challenge yourself to do difficult tasks. I fear authorities of all kinds. It makes it hard to work for someone else when you fear them. To survive, I must be self employed. My ability to tolerate the fear of authority usually lasts 4-6 months. After that point I start experiencing panic attacks, migraines, digestive issues, insomnia, and depression. It doesn’t matter what my boss says, I feel like dying when I realize I made a mistake.
