The Sea Dragon was a design which was studied in 1962 lead by Robert Truax. The concept for the Sea Dragon was a two-stage sea-launched orbital super heavy-lift launch vehicle which would of shattered the scale of rockets and would of altered the course of rocket technology.
The Sea Dragon would have been 150 maters tall and 23 meters in diameter and could place up to 550 tones (1,210,000 lb) into a Low Earth Orbit and would been fully reusable be recovering both stages of the rocket using inflatable flares and splashing down in the ocean. Sea Dragon would of generated more than 79 million pounds of thrust which is 10 times more than the Saturn V Moon Rocket.
Sea Dragon would have been too large to be built and launched on land so both stages would have been build in dry docks and assembled in a special lagoon at Cape Canaveral. It would be towed out to the launch point about 60 Kilometres off the coast of Florida by tugboats. Once Sea Dragon reaches the launch point buoyancy tanks would have been filled with water and sink 2/3 of the rocket into the ocean so the water can damp on the shock waves when the rocket launches.

This isn’t just another payload. That thing’s carrying plutonium
haha I understood that reference xD
Matthew Cable me too
That’s why we’re launching from the middle of nowhere KAREN!
What if the sea dragon was real 🤔🤔🤔
Matthew Cable lol just came here after i watched for all mankind
I'll never get bored of watching that thing slide out of the water on it's way up
We *N E E D* a gif of that part.

@@alloneword7427 me too
The absolute coolest things is when the music starts and the rocket shoots out of the water
sounds gay without context
As soon as I saw the NASA logo come on screen and “Everbody Wants To Rule The World” by Tears For Fears started playing it was an immediate like.
Overlooked song imo
I want the sea dragon
JUST LOVE IT
@ qqqrrtyop
so much for musical taste !
Everyone’s talking about the rocket leaving the water but everything is impressive. The way the entire things filmed, the time lapse, the F-4 phantom is just super duper cool to me
Thank You
Matthew Cable no problem. Things a master piece my friend
Kerbal Studio Program
It's CGI, nothing was "filmed."
@@Nerval-kg9sm It was made in a game, called Kerbal Space Program. He used mods for it, if you watched the entire video and saw the end.
Video: "The Sea Dragon could launch the entire ISS on a single launch."
Phineas: "Hey Ferb, I know what we are going to do today!"
Mein gott that’s a throwback to my childhood
Yeah
Hahahahaha good old days
oh no
*Mom phinnest And ffffffffffff are....*
*Trying to launch the ISS by using the sea dragon*
Really cool! The four auxiliary engines actually would have ignited prior to main engine ignition and they would also have been used for orbital insertion. Love it!
Thanks!
Ur wrong thay ignited at the same time as the main engine
@@ciala51 its ignited a few seconds before the massive main engine fires
I looked through all of the NASA archives of sea dragon and I fond that the 1 in the ksp mod in real life the outer engines were ignited at the same time if this type of sea dragon was built I wish at lest 1 of these big dumb boosters was built and lunched but maybe in the future it will be needed
@@ciala51 if you read all the NASA files you'd know this rocket would never work in real life
The fact that the Sea Dragon is capable of taking the entirety of ISS into orbit, just shows how huge the rocket is.
Or 150% of a jestown to the moon
The ISS Weight is 450 tons and The Sea Dragon can Carry 550 Tons in Low Earth Orbit. It means Not only it can carry the Entire ISS but also it can carry 100 Tons More Payload into LEO. The Sea Dragon Could Open up Everything we dream about Space Exploration.
@@gerardanderson9665what if we put the Saturn V IN the sea dragon?
@@pacevy3798we goin to mars with that one
I love how you recreated the post credits scene from Season 1 of For All Mankind. Everything here is perfect from the F4 to the carrier, the tugs, and of course this beautiful monstrosity.
Who else is waiting for all mankind Season 2
supposed to come out this autumn some time
Edward Troth that’s perfect cause ya know we got this Quarantine
@@CanadianAviation12 they've released a couple of trailera

Suddenly decided Season 2 needs to have a montage of them prepping, sinking and launching this beast.
Well, they do show the sea dragon launch, twice in fact, but it only shows the launch, not the preparation
hopefully sea dragon comes back in s4
I love the music choice - For All Mankind did brilliantly to inspire this one, I presume
Just Old Days,This Video Was Very Cool,Ships,Planes, good Camera View,Keep it Going!
I love the aesthetic of the video. First you have the F-4 Phantom taking off, giving you the impression what era it should be.
And then there it is, The Sea Dragon if it is actually built and launched on that era.
Not gonna lie everything about this slaps. The music, the cinematic, and the little facts at the bottom. Just perfect
Yes, "would of" is peak grammar.
For all mankind inspired and wished the sea dragon was really built
Edit: 2:30 me when ksp 2 says that my rocket is to big to launch from the launch pad
It's fun to romanticize the Sea Dragon but it wasn't really feasible. If the program had continued we would have had the Nova series of vehicles instead since they were much more realistic to produce and fly
@@mattsoup4121 Sea Dragon seems more feasible to me than the Space Shuttle and SLS/NLS/Ares. At least it tried to upscale and re-use existing technologies unlike the Shuttle which needed a closed cycle engine, thermal protection and was a death machine if anything went wrong during the launch. While SLS uses existing parts and is safer than the shuttle it is still extremely wasteful to use RS-25s in an expendable configuration. IMO the biggest flaw of the Sea Dragon was not in its design but in the lack of possible payloads that would justify building multi-kiloton launch vehicle. But yeah, it could launch ISS in one go and do it cheaper than using Shuttles, Protons and Soyuzes.
@@ASHDMDSGN Sea dragon wasn't a simple vehicle. The were going to reuse the first stage (which was exceedingly massive). That would've required the biggest parachutes ever made and parachutes get exponentially more difficult to make as they scale up. The biggest difficulty imo would be the first stage engine. The F1 was barely able to achieve stable combustion because the chamber was so massive and now you want this massive engine with a massively larger combustion chamber?
@@mattsoup4121 Well, I don't know why anyone on Earth would want to land it under parachutes.I haven't seen plans for parachutes but I've read about plans to just let it splash down, not use parachutes, simply because tank walls would be made out of 8mm thick steel. I don't think that kind of strength needs any parachutes to survive a splash down, especially knowing that it's drag to weight ratio would be really low due to big empty tanks. Combustion instability isn't that big of an issue as you try to portray it. Theoretical chamber pressure for that nozzle would be 20 atm which is more than 3 times less than 70 atm found in F-1. So yeah, the most absurd thing about this vehicle would be its size which would be manageable by using shipyards rather than traditional rocket manufacturing facilities.
@@ASHDMDSGN I don't have time to argue about this all day, but you're simplifying things that are exceedingly difficult.
Also the chutes thing I read somewhere at some point. There's a chance that's wrong, however 8mm thick steel won't be able to handle hitting the ocean at say 50m/s. As you said it's a huge vehicle and hitting the ocean that quickly even with 8mm thick walls will collapse the whole thing. That's just simple material properties and statics.
Spectacular job!
The Sea Dragon would have been soo crazy!

This isn't just another payload
THAT THING CARRYS PLUTONIUM!!!!!!!
Edit: thanks for the heart
Well now you don’t have a heart

can we see a full mission later?
I really want to see
Maybe
Мне очень понравился "For all mankind"! Жду 3 сезон с нетерпением! Морской дракон очень крут!
gotta love how it took a single post-credits scene in a show to inexorably associate sea dragon with that song
true
This keeps getting recommended and Im liking it
As that thing just goes up, it gets me every time!
other people: saw the sea dragon because of "For All Mankind"
me, who knows sea dragon because of youtube videos: lol nice
hey i knew it from both lol
I knew it for a long time, and then I saw the clip from "For All Mankind" and it rekindled my passion for KSP
Me who found out from Wikipedia: *ascended*
I know because of looking online
i knew the sea dragon looong before for all mankind and i went nuts when it first appeared on the series!
Why is the song “everybody want to rule the world” replayed to the sea dragon? I have no clue I see it with it everywhere.
cooldloop it’s a reference to a TV show xD
Matthew Cable ok thanks.
@@cooldloop2381 the show is called For All Mankind this was in last episode :)

for all mankind, as a engineer and a history buff, I think it is amazing, underrated
Loved seeing this and future vids from you Matt! It's awesome
thank you!
I like that you used the song "Everybody wants to rule the world" just like the launch from the show "For all Mankind"
How are you seeing this episode of for all mankind a year before its released where i am
OMG I love this Song! The only problem would be the massive acoustics that would kill incalculable amounts of Sea creatures. If it was put in a man made reservoir it would be perfect.
yes best way is just some wall around lunch place

I can't help but watch this over and over
That would be the tune playing in my helmet if I ever ventured outside earths atmosphere 😆.
Well done - Sea Dragon would have "ruled the world" of orbital launch platforms.
Just for your information: the bigger a rocket engine is, the bigger problem are the instabilities in the combustion inside. This problem almost killed the F-1 engine, and the Sea Dragon one is more than 6x as big. So sorry - this rocket would've just torn itself apart.
@@HalNordmann at larger sizes instabilities in rocket engines would cancel each other out
Apart of that, the underwater shots are very very cool, it's a nice job you made ! :)
Can't wait!
That F-4 Phantom is beautiful
Great job!! Loved this.
This is better than the cinematic shown in the show
This is awesome! First video I’ve watched from you and honestly this is really fine work! Incredible cinematic! Really!
Great choice in music
This is awesome, keep up with the good content.
This was very enjoyable to watch! Beautifully made. And wouldn't it be awesome if this could actually have happened in real life? I think that would be epic!
That's is a great animation bro! Nice work!!

I actually love the music in this video, I know it’s in “For All Mankind”, but nevertheless, this song is a great piece of 80s synth pop.
My very favorite shoulda been built rocket.
Cool F4, too
The start with the F-4 Phanton was cool
Omg I love the for all mankind touch to it.
So perfect
Like the lupus nocte opening. Good music, great builds, beautiful cinematic. Nice nod to For All Mankind. Have a sub bud
Damn. That's a lot of "would of" instead of "would have" or "would've". Bone Apple That Tea.
