Beautiful video. I worked on the X-33 propulsion system for five years, and was disappointed when it was cancelled. Nitpick: the X-33 was only a suborbital technology demonstrator so it would never have been able to deploy a satellite - the two LH2 tanks would occupy that space, if we had built them out of Al-Li in the first place. I really enjoyed this, thanks for posting it.
If only the X-33 was never cancelled, more rockets would utilize Aerospike engines instead of bell nozzles. Imagine how life would be today with reusable SSTOs.
Could see then be an X-33C (Cargo) variant that'd require a stage booster to get it to high altitude due to less LH2 availability, then switch to the aerospike to reach orbit...like a scaled-up Dyna-Soar
Dude! This is just amazing! That looks much more like an animation than actuall KSP. Awesome visuals, good graphics (unlike stock KSP) Great and realistic camera angels Good job and keep it up Matt, this probably took a long time, but after watching this i can say it was worth it.
Who knows their could have been an X-33 that was secretly built by the Air Force and is being used at Area 51 there has been sightings of triangle UFOs that kind of match the description of the x 33
Technically, X-33 would’ve only reached a suborbital trajectory, not orbit. Not enough delta v. But Venturestar is bigger, and was supposed to reach orbit.
You'd think looking for more options for space flight. That NASA would be smart and restarting the X-33/Venturestar program. It should be still cost effective and worth it for the research and R&D investment alone.
"Comparing the X-33 and Venture Star to the Space Shuttle they would have been more easier to turnaround between each flight, would have been cheaper to use and carry more payload into orbit." Would it really? Comparing the concepts of the Space Shuttle to the Space Shuttle would tell you that the concepts have a faster, easier, and thus cheaper turnaround. And VentureStar being an SSTO necessarily means it takes a hit to payload. Wikipedia shows the Space Shuttle payload to LEO of 27.5 tonnes, where the VentureStar, even as planned, only would've carried 20 tonnes. Also, you seem to have confused the X-33, a subscale *suborbital* technology demonstrator, with the full-size orbital VentureStar. The X-33 would have used two XRS-2200 aerospikes, where the VentureStar would have used 7 finalised RS-2200 linear aerospikes. This is all what Wikipedia tells me, anyway. All that being said, though, I like the video. It's always cool to see these concepts brought to some form of life, and I wish we had gotten to see how the VentureStar would have turned out. Even if SSTO turns out not to have been worth it, we should be able to say we tried!
It felt like there were a lot of spacecraft concepts in this basic shape, in the late 80s & 90s. This X33, the Dreamchaser was a concept at the same time, Europe's Hermes, maybe a NASA concept or maybe it was an early Dreamchaser. Some of them were so similar, it was hard to tell them apart. Oh... I think there's one nearing completion now which was one of those concepts too. The name was familiar but I can't remember what it was. There's a similar but possibly earlier Russian vehicle with the same basic shape too. A working aerodynamics test vehicle was built, and was nicknamed the shoe.
I love this video, but i have one big question: Where did you get the textures for the X-33? I mean, i've searched far and wide for the logo and skunk, and in the end i had to make the logo myself.

Oh yes, the Soviets had the Americans running scared in the early years of the space race! 😂Only when it came to putting people on the Moon did Russia's smaller population and industrial base put them at too much of a disadvantage. Some Western nations have been doing everything they can to grow their populations to stay ahead, and I think that's led to abuses on a par with anything that happened in countries they look down on.
fascinating! Could You simulate an X33 launch, orbit, docking, and resupplying of MOSS-1 (MarsOrbital SpaceStation) and Martian atmospheric reentry and landing? Have You heard of Lofstrom Launch Loop, also very fascinating? Really easy on minor planets and moons in the Solar System. On Planet_Earth SSTO is uneconomical, and needs two stages, even with X33 technology. Besides that, lifting body aerodynamics is always too unstable at landing; the bird will need (retractable) front winglets, to stabilize for safe landing. 3 of them: one small vertical on the nose and two even smaller horizontals behind the heat-shield area. (same applies to a manned X-37B follow-on spaceplane)
There were so many of these designs 20-30 years ago. The Dreamchaser made it, the Hermes didn't, this didn't, the Russian "shoe" got a working aerodynamic test vehicle but no more, another with a name I can't remember has only recently been assembled for the first time. And the X-33 was meant to be a demonstrator for a bigger but proportionately skinnier ship called the Venture Star.
Really wish the VentureStar had flown. Awesome looking beast.
Was about to but politics got in the way. We have SpaceX starship to now look forward too.
