There aren’t many mangaka who are this good at goofy action-comedy - writing, paneling, and illustrating these completely insane fight scenes that are still easy to follow thanks to their own internal logic and clear stakes, action, and characterization. Rumiko Takahashi’s spent the last 15 years on RIN-NE and Mao, two series that are far from her best, and it makes me wonder how many younger fans - which of course are _most_ fans - realize just how good she is when she’s at the top of her game. I’d honestly call her fight choreography and layouts second only to Toriyama’s. Like, this is volume 3 of 38, and we’re already doing what’s effectively a three-way fight scene where both Ryoga and Ranma are fighting with a handicap. Plus Akane helping from the sidelines, plus Genma complicating things further by bringing in a kettle, plus all the tools the fighters pull into the ring (which ends up demolished). Perfect chaos, with “I shall now burn with a NEW love for my Ranma!” providing a great punchline.
I don't think Rin-ne or Mao are *bad* per se, but they are a pretty big deviation from the series that put her on the map: Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, and Inu-Yasha and arguably don't play to her strengths as an author/artist quite as well
@@jasonbrennan9918 Rin-ne has its charms (I still remember Rinne finding a yuki-onna in his new fridge and trying to cram the kettle in next to her), but I just find Mao’s character dynamics so DULL. Takahashi built her name on manga with central relationships that just spring to life, and yet there’s barely anything there in Nanoka and Mao’s relationship. Don’t get me wrong, she’s more than earned the right to write about whatever she wants, and I can’t blame her Shonen Sunday editors for deferring to one of their biggest stars ever (second only to MAYBE Gosho Aoyama, though Mitsuru Adachi is up there)… but I’ve been reading the Ranma manga from my library, and it’s so damn FUN that I can go through four volumes in a day, easy. I just wish Takahashi could retain that knack for compelling character dynamics and page-turning action while she’s playing with her yokai.
6:08 While you're correct about Kodachi's voice actress in 1989, Saeko Shimazu, being the first one to do the "Noblewoman's laugh" in anime, the voice actress for Kodachi in the 2024 remake is a different one named Ayane Sakura.
Ranma belongs to the School of Anything-Goes Martial Arts. They specialize in unarmed, mid-air combat, but they will stop at nothing to learn different techniques from other forms of martial arts. Including the next match. Believe there will be some where Ranma really should have stopped trying The ref knows. The first Ranma ½ (1989) anime of the Martial Arts Rhythmic Gymnastics match made it much clearer that there was only one rule: No unarmed combat! No touching the opponent with any part of your own body. Everything else counted as a tool. That is how Ranma won the match: She hit the post, not Kodachi, breaking it and sending her to the ground Kodachi is a coward and is fully committed to hurting others to keep herself from being hurt This version of the match is truer to the original manga, but the (1989) version added filler details that made it more entertaining. If I remember correctly, the Tatewaki ran screaming from the arena after being used by his sister
The old anime did make a few small and nice changes to this episode, such as the flowers in the dressing room spraying narcotic gas that put panda Genma asleep, or showing the gymnastics girls chatting and having snacks in a dark place (later revealed to be under the ring, as you also see here).
I think this is the first time, the existence of the remake is truly justified, in terms of animation quality. What happens in this episode happens in Remake episode 7 but original episode 12+13 (IIRC). So in the remake, about 2 hours of runtime (so far) have been condensed in - mostly - pretty smart ways.
I love that most, maybe even all the main characters have a superhero-like power, and a wildly problematic trait. So far I'll start with the most obvious: Ryoga is superhero strong, but has an unbelievably bad sense of direction. Akane is also super strong and can beat up everyone in school but is unbelievably bat at...we'll find out later. Kuno is awesome at Kendo but acts like he's in a different era and STUPIDLY in love with Akane and ALSO The Pig-Tailed Girl. There are so many characters to come with huge pros and cons. Ranma is OP. It kinda felt weird to me that he could lift Ryoga's umbrella so easily, but I guess that's why the show is named after him. Back when it came out is weakness was probably having to turn into a girl when he identifies as a man, but even now he's already happy to use that trait when it comes in handy. Oh! Kodachi: Awesome at "Rhythmic Gymnastic" martial arts but also HAS to cheat at every possible opportunity, laughs like a loon and STUPIDLY in love with Ranma.
This is not directly related to this episode, but Kappei Yamaguchi, the male Ranma, made his debut as a voice actor in the old Ranma. I don't know if it's because I have a lot of feelings for this work, but I named my daughter Akane. Like her father, she also started her career as a voice actress in 2020. Although he has not had any major roles yet, he appeared in Boruto Episode 261 as Soul Tao. It seems that the daughter of Kikuko Inoue, who plays Kasumi, is also a voice actress.
2:20 This anime does take some level of realism in the fact that in martial arts they do teach you that you can turn anything into a weapon, its just that in Ranma they go crazy with that concept.
At 6:30, are you sure P-Chan is enjoying it? The image isn't clear (and all reactors have the video blurred or cut. I don't have netflix at the moment so I'm following the series through reactors only. I don't know what I will do if and when the series will get past the old show.), but to me it seems he's trying to escape, isn't it?
No, the person that started that laugh was Kodachi's ORIGINAL voice actress, industry legend Saeko Shimazu. The character was recast in the remake and is now played by Ayane Sakura - also a good VA, but doesn't live up to Shimazu's original performance. You really should check out the original series, it's far better in most respects.
Ranma vs Kodachi was more entertaining than Paul vs Tyson 😂
💯
Ranma is sooo fun. I love this anime.
My favorite all time
It's a good one!
It was anything goes gymnastics hahaha
💯

perfect description of the manga. Rumiko Takahashi's humor really shines in that chaos

Thanks for the clarification. I was close! Lol. Must've misread the comments from before.

Thanks for the context with the original show!

Also, Kodachi showed up in a wedding dress……with rockets!

When Ranma and Akane are having a moment Ryoga interrupt.
"Are you worried about me?!"😊❤ hahah Ranma is so obvius into Akane
💯

during my childhood my sense of humor was molded by Ranma 1/2.. 🤣🤣🤣 Animax was the best!! thank you Animax!

That is a really cool story! We've named our pets after some characters from anime we like. Best of luck to her on her VA journey!
Anything can be a weapon is very accurate for this show. Don't forget that in this anime, anything can be a Martial Arts as well....Anything.
🤔
Kodachi got obliterated 😂😂
I can't wait for that one heroine to make appearance if they make her exist in this remake version ❤❤
2:20 This anime does take some level of realism in the fact that in martial arts they do teach you that you can turn anything into a weapon, its just that in Ranma they go crazy with that concept.
That's why I say not everything "should" be a weapon 😆
Kodachi just accepted to leave aside her love for Ranma just for that day... hilarious 😂
Now Ranma has both siblings in love with him 🤣
☠️☠️☠️
Really appreciate that you do reaction on Ranma, not many TH-camrs doing atm. 5:33 didnt know this tho, thanks a bunch
I was a bit wrong, the original actress did start the laugh, but the remake has a new VA for Kodachi.
Ranma is the best Romcom!
Pretty damn good...
Ranma was smart to know a person (or more) can have the same first and last name. Rumiko also said Ranma was a unisex name
I don't know about you guys, but I loved Kodachi!
She is a riot 🤣🤣🤣
She is a lot of fun!
What an intense battle indeed.
The fun has only just begun, this is one of the least crazy fights
Yay! Bring on the insanity and fun!
You Akane is a true good friend for what she for Ranma and Ryoga
The first fight in the remake Ranma also the unique one
The amount of female Ranma's feet and leg shot was superb 😂
😆
