I followed this build about 2 years ago. Today bottom fell out because the long strips on the bottom weren't heavy duty enough. Either not enough screws, not enough glue, or even the wrong kind of screws maybe. I checked the other 2 I built and they are also about to fail. So make sure you really beef up the bottom end of this build. Side note. We also got an absolutely crazy amount of heavy rain yesterday. I'm going to salvage what I can and redo the bottom end with through bolts and a whole 2x4, not just a little strip. I hope this helps others. Again... no hate on this guy. It was likely my mistake somewhere and probably incorrect hardware for the application. Great video. I watched it again. I needed to do more on the bottom end for sure.
I'd think for something that big a 2x4 aligned flat against the walls should be a good ledger board for the floor, those little strips are definitely too thin for such a large and heavy box, and are the clear weak point.
This is THE BEST video I have ever seen on woodwork construction. The fast-forwards, the visual cuts, the precise narrative. Every second of my time watching was informative. Thankyou. And now I'm off to try to emulate what I've just seen.
I love how the video supplements the plans. You can watch the video quickly to get an overview before working with the plans. Love LOVE this format. Thank you!
One of my sons and I just finished building this for my wife for Mothers Day. Came out great. Super great directions and perfect materials list. thank you!

OMG! I remember the first box I built when I was 5 yrs old. I watched you build a box, and was so inspired, I showed it to the entire village. They were so inspired, they built a big box, and it is now our symbol of a higher power. We worship the box.
This is an awesome project. My daughter and i built one in 2 days. Dont be surprised because it is MASSIVE like the description indicates. Thanks for a great set of plans. One more to build, maybe next week.
simple yet sturdy and durable elevated garden bed. This would be immensely helpful for senior citizens like me. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful project.
I just finished making this myself, first real woodworking project. I do wish a little more time was spent on showing the dimensions of the boards and the final product as you were going along, but I respect that you wanted a snappy and quick video. Most of the information I needed was here and in the plans, though as a first project I had to learn a lot on my own (like how 1x6 boards are actually 0.75x5.5, as with the others). But it was fun that way: I only had one sawhorse and lots of clamps instead of the very nice looking table you have, definitely can see how an investment in that would save a whole lot of time on future projects. Thanks for the video, it's allowed me to confidently make an actual garden for my apartment's patio, I'm very happy with how mine turned out :)
THATS THE REAL DEAL THANKYOU IM ACHIC THAT WANTS TO BUILD HER OWN I DONT HAVE ALL THOSE COOL TOOLS SO A MITER SAW WILL HAVE TO DO AND A DRILL AND A PENCIL
I dont have those expensive tools, I'm gonna try to build this with pallet Woods, nails, hammer and hand saw.. Thanks for sharing this bro.. All the best...
As a lady who doesn’t do wood work, I have to say it was very satisfying to watch your work. I am thinking of getting me some Ryobi tools since I see you own some and perhaps get into wood working. I like to build things. I have this small lawnmower for years and she is still running great. I love Ryobi products.
😂Fantastic been putting it off for weeks, lacking confidence but after watching your video I can't wait to get started before my babies die. Next year ill do from seed. No heat wave this year so hopefully not too much rain either. Loved your video and although I don't own any BIG BOY TOOLS I'm sure going to give it a try. Thank you , you literally might have saved an 83 yes youngs life!!
Great video straight to the point but easy to understand turned out beautifully....still can' get used to shorts and flip flops.....but hey it's your world so keep up the awesome building
Yeah, I was kinda wondering how many ounces of glue in a "wack". Or exactly how many screws make a "wack". LOL ;-) But I was comforted by noting that he is Canadian. He probably uses metric so I will not have to deal with 5/32 of a wack. ;-)
The Plastic Liner could cause Funal growth and such undesirables. I use 2 layers of permeable Ground Cover which 'hang in there' for years. Rain Water and Irrigation Sprinklers etc do cause the wood to get damp but it dries out quickly especially in Summer.
That's what I was thinking about fungal growth. The one I built (which didn't turn out very sturdy and why I'm here), I lined the bottom with hardware cloth and gardening fabric.
Easy and fun build. There wasn't a cedar plank in sight in our town, so we built ours out of pine decking and treated it with Thompson's. It worked great.
Thanks for the video! I'm going to try and do this with pallets for my grandmother so I don't go broke, and she's getting too old to weed her large garden
Nicely done,i like your design over mine.I used ptl plywood and framing material for box and frame. Then lined with 5/8 thick cedar and geo textile[Mom is happy to have new upright planter].thanks for the video.
Well done and narrated video. Only thing I would change is the plastic which you noted. Weed fabric would probably be fine. You have yours over stone so you don’t want dirt falling through so plastic might be better for u.
clear and straight to the point with some great editing made it a pleasure to watch, great info ...just wish i had the tools to make it as quick ..oh well hand tools it is
Slight design flaw and a recommendation. Replace the 2x2s with 2x4s and put 4x4s behind the legs. This will help support the 800 lb of dirt for your garden. I made two of these and love them.
Nice job, and very timely, as this is one of my next project. I'm going to use 4x4 for the legs, because I already have them, but otherwise will follow your build.
Social distancing is gonna make for so many diy builds videos. I know I'm going to finally make some of these with my free time, starting with your awesome pocket hole machine
Hi, thanks for this great video. Can I add large wheels to it to roll it around the lawn & concrete? I have to chase the sunshine 😓 And how about folding wire cage on a long edge and top to deter animals? Thanks so much!
I found your video as I was looking for ideas for this. I really like what you have built. BUT my favorite part was your kid putting the tractor toy in there.
I’m building one right now with some small variations (tool limits): no brad nails, 1 1/2” x 1” x 6’ pine along the bottom to support the cross boards (hopefully it’s still thick enough), and won’t trim the piece to the corner legs so one side of the leg will be wider than the other. Other than that this has been an excellent general guide to follow. Thanks!
I love the instructions and I got the plan from your website. Unfortunately the only bummer is that 2inch screws driven into the feet connecting to the bed, the screws went straight through. Not sure if anyone else had this issue. I switched to 1 inch instead and it’s better. Still love the plan. Its beautiful on my patio
Ganna make this this winter so going into spring I can make an elevated garden to deter my cats. Probably build a screen area on top with the front foldable to keep them out.
I am sorry, but type of pocket hole did you use? I am a novice. I have never used a pocket hole jig before. I bought a Kreg (Jig 310). I just don't know if that is correct. I have the material and and I want to start this and finish it today. Thanks.
Same, that’s a ton of weight once the soil is wet. I like the overall design and look, but I would probably have inset the bottom a little more, run it 2 x 6 down in the middle for the length of it and then put a couple 4 x 4 legs into the 2 x 6 underneath…. Basically all for bottom support.
If anything , I am the total OPPOSITE of a DIYer but after watching this over and over, I think I can do it !!! Just a few quick questions: are the legs strong enough as I was thinking 4X4 posts would be used. Also, should I try to level it before I put the dirt in?
The polyethylene vapor barrier should do just fine except for where it's exposed to sunlight. I'm expecting the exposed plastic to turn brittle and flake into pieces within a few months. What I probably would've done is still use the poly up to a few inches under the soil level, and overlap (underlap) that edge with some thin EPDM rubber sheet which is typically very weather-resistant. Great build overall though.
Landscape fabric might work, too, in the bottom and it is likely more UV resistant. I saw another build with hardware cloth (wire @ 1/4 inch squares) with landscape fabric over the wire. There were wood slats underneath, too.
I followed this build about 2 years ago. Today bottom fell out because the long strips on the bottom weren't heavy duty enough. Great video. I watched it again. I needed to do more on the bottom end for sure.
While you're at it. Make a box for the center or the 8' long sides will bow out for sure. Not just saying.. I'm building this as we speak.
I'd think for something that big a 2x4 aligned flat against the walls should be a good ledger board for the floor, those little strips are definitely too thin for such a large and heavy box, and are the clear weak point.

As others have said, great editing. I appreciate the pace of the video as many youtubers tend to consider themselves as comedies and/or story tellers.
simple yet sturdy and durable elevated garden bed. This would be immensely helpful for senior citizens like me. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful project.
If anyone is wondering how much soil this thing will take to fill. It is about 1 cubic yard. It is A LOT of soil! Great project, thanks!
Took me like 30 bags lol
You don't have to fill it all with soil. Use brush and stick etc on the bottom first
I loved this. Great tutorial. I intend to produce three planter boxes exactly as this.
I just built one and my wife loved it! thanks for sharing!
Email me a pic and I'll share it on my website. If you'd like.

It's good that you're using whole whacks instead of three quarters or half whacks. Makes for a more sturdy, quality build...

Nice box. Need an instruction - raised bed for someone with only a handsaw, screwdriver and hammer. haha
Step 1. Go to homedepot buy some tools. Step 2. Build it with new tools. Step 3. Reap rewards.

nice design! great work.

Nice looking box th down fall is the plastic. Less bottom board use small square fencing stapled and use landscape or weed barrier to hold dirt in.
Hey! Just a heads up. The plans say 1 1/8 for the cleats but you say 1 1/4 in the video. Great build still!
Building one right now. Great job and looks good to. Hi from downunder mate.
Are there written instructions: Sure would be nice to have those.
The polyethylene vapor barrier should do just fine except for where it's exposed to sunlight. I'm expecting the exposed plastic to turn brittle and flake into pieces within a few months.

Plastic keeps alot more of the wood dryer for longer than landscape fabric therefore making the wood last longer.
@@troutguyCO Landscape fabric is porous, and as DIY Builds mentions, you want to keep the wood as dry as possible.
Nice job. Great video editing too. Straight to the point time laps
Do your plans include cut lists? I typically only need that and quick watch of a video to be able to take 'er from there.
These are gorgeous. Though to be honest this is a bit too difficult for me! 😅 I don’t think I’ve ever built something before…
What length Kreg screws did you use?
What size pocket hole screws are used for this project?
