  • Come learn how to build durable, long-lasting raised garden beds or planter boxes. This video will walk you through the best lumber choices, bed dimensions, a step-by-step demonstration to build a raised garden bed, plus tips on gopher-proofing the bed with hardware cloth. The planter boxes shown in this video are 4x8' by 16.5", made of heart redwood. Thank you so much for tuning in and following along!

    Sealing your garden beds isn't necessary (especially if you use heart redwood or cedar, which are already very durable on their own, unsealed) but we did end up sealing the interior of the raised bed with a non-toxic, food-safe wood sealer (linked above) to make the bed last even longer. Applying a sealer BEFORE you build the garden beds is easiest, but we sealed the inside after assembly because I like the look of aged redwood and want the outside to age naturally. “Silver is for the kettle, and gold for the furnace, but The LORD is the tester of hearts- Bible” your heart is like discovered silver, dirty and not pure, when silver is purified it is melted over and over, to the point that when it’s melted and glows red hot, it is pure enough to see your own reflection in the puddle, so also does the LORD purify your heart, till HE can see HIS own reflection in it, seek the LORD and be reborn, ask The LORD to renew and restore you, repent and ask The LORD for HIS Salvation for those who seek will find and those who knock the door will be open unto them, no man is good, all are in need of salvation, Jesus died so that our sins will be wiped away and so that we could be made new, seek The Kingdom of GOD for if you would be wise you would be wise for yourself, pick up your cross and deny your flesh and follow the path of GOD, for The Kingdom of GOD is at hand, in JESUS MIGHTY NAME Amen and Amen

    Great video! So clear and straightforward. I can’t wait for this snow to melt so I can build too!!! I thought I should mention this: when you drill into the 4x4 on the short side, make sure you offset the screws for the long side. Otherwise you’ll hit your other screw.

    • @HomesteadandChill
      @HomesteadandChill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much! You know, over the years and dozens of raised beds built this way, we've never bothered to "try" (or even pay attention to) offsetting the screws and they've never hit one another or been a problem. Have fun building, and stay cozy in the meantime!

    OMG! Genius on the construction of these. I always build beds just like this...but configured just how they'll be placed in the yard. It was always tough on the old back/knees getting the bottom level screwed in. But your way has all the work right at waist/chest level. So my creaky old joints say "Thank you!!!".

    Yes! I've been looking for a more basic tutorial on garden bed construction, from the width of boards to number of screws per board. This answered everything. I was thinking maybe two 2x6's, but definitely want to spend more for 3 per side. Thanks for the great video.

    • @HomesteadandChill
      @HomesteadandChill  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Glad you enjoyed the tutorial and good luck! If you don't have issues with gophers and have decent native soil below, you can build a raised bed with only two 2x6's per side if the veggies will have access to spread the roots into the earth below. If you do add the extra 2x6 to make it 3 per side, it does make it easier to work in the raised bed as it will raise the ground surface 5.5 inches. Hope that helps and have fun growing!

    Thank you so much for sharing! My partner and I built a cedar planter box last weekend based on your videos and written instructions. I was going into it a complete beginner. We had the lumber store cut the wood to size and it was very quick to put together. We are very happy with the result! Our local hardware store didn't have a non-toxic sealant and suggested we just line the sides with plastic. We ended up using garbage bags which seems to be working fine because I haven't noticed too much water leaking through the sides. This was a very fun and rewarding project and we will probably be building more next year! We love your videos - they are very inspiring!

      We are so glad to hear you had such success building your first raised bed, now you get to start gardening, congratulations! I would say though for when you build future raised beds, don't use any plastic to line the insides as it isn't necessary. Source the non toxic sealer online which we link in the caption or just don't use a sealer at all and the raised beds will still last for years. Thanks for watching and have fun gardening!

    We had 6x6 cedar raised beds that only lasted 11yrs, they are falling apart one by one. I have a bed for flowers that’s made with treated 4x4’s that are the same age, and haven’t shown any signs of rot. This is in SW Michigan. Thanks for the great video, the beds look superb!

    Found your site last year from Kevin, of Epic Gardening, and have been anxiously awaiting the next video from the new homestead. Every morning I come in and refresh the screen but for so long, no new videos.
    This one really was an epic. Love the cleanliness and functionality of the garden area. You are so fortunate to have the resources and opportunity to make a paradise in your own backyard.
    Can't wait to see the growth results March - August.

    You are amazing and charismatic!!! You have the most beautiful and flawless garden I have ever visited on TH-cam.
    Your garden is absolutely stunning, neat, and very well-maintained and everything looks luscious. I love to garden a little bit but I’m a wimp when it comes to lizards rodents worms and all of the above so I just bought me a raise garden bed from Sam’s that I can stand over. Hopefully I won’t be too afraid. I don’t wanna see snakes or any of that nonsense lol but I love to garden in pots. You have class😎😎

      You are far too kind Sandra, good luck on gardening and hopefully you get used to the different animals that may show up on occasion. Thanks for that idea about the mending brace. I will apply that. I built pretty high beds previously and your point about the amount of soil required to fill really hits home.

    • @HomesteadandChill
      @HomesteadandChill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn't get into it in this video, but for deeper beds, folks can always consider a Hugelkultur style bed to reduce the cost of filling them - where you fill the bottom foot with logs, branches, leaves and other natural/organic material, and then add quality compost and soil in the upper foot.

    Awesome informational video, I own a business doing yard cleanups and maintenance, however; I just had a landscaping project dropped right into my lap by a realtor that I have done a ton of home listing yard cleanups for. I guess she figured that I do a good job with the cleanups...here build this for the outside of my office. Task accepted I guess, I didn't want to go into it blind though. This video was a great research video. Thank You

      Thank you so much for the kind words and it's great to hear you will be starting your own garden! We don't "stain" the wood necessarily but we did use a coat of GardenSeal on the inside and outside of the beds, we have the product linked in the caption. Hope that helps and good luck!
