    Soo, last year I replaced a lot of wood on my deck, like 90% of it. Some pieces rotted, some just looking old, etc. Being who I am I didn't throw out any of the old wood. This spring my wife asked me if I could make her some planter boxes. Light bulb went off and I started wondering if the old wood from the deck I replaced last year could be used. Wifey told me about what size planter boxes she wanted. I spent about 2 days cutting up and trimming all the old wood. Let me tell you there is a lot of wood. I could probably make like 20 planter boxes. I wanted to get some ideas on how to make them and here I am. I'm super excited with your design ideas. I love making things from wood and best of all is all the wood was free!!!! Thanks for your ideas and tips. Off I go and I hope all goes well. Thank you! ;~))

    I’ve made a couple dozen planters like your #5. After the first eight I added feet so there was a 2 inch air space between the box bottom and the deck it sat on. Without the feet water dripping rotted the deck even though it was treated lumber. The airspace lets the deck dry. Your five designs are elegant and simple to build. Thanks for the time you put into making the video.

    I am a beginner to woodwork, the main test I have with this bundle th-cam.com/users/postUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz is that I think that its hard to settle on a choice of the plan and outline to use as there are a large portion of them there. Nonetheless, I like the simple stride to step directions laid out there.

    If you live in a humid climate like I do, be sure to use outdoor-rated glue, and stainless steel screws. Also good idea to leave gaps between the boards for expansion. It can also help to dip the ends of the feet in epoxy or one of the purpose-made sealers/hardeners to help prevent them from soaking up water from the ground/bricks/etc.

    • @GeorgeMinton-jb8ky
      @GeorgeMinton-jb8ky ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Just a note about outdoor screws. I have a wooden fence that I maintain myself. Original screws were various cheap screws that had chemical reactions with the wood to cause them to rot out where the screws were. After going on lumber sites I came to find out that the only screws that do not react to the wood are stainless steel screws so now that is all I use. My fence is getting old now. It has been up since around 2005. So it is (yes) 18 years old. After hand painting stain on that sucker over three times it is still in good shape except the post are leaning a bit most due to ground heave and the fact that the wood post were not properly preserved before installation and maybe because they are wood. I might still be able to salvage it by having a fence company come in and replace the post. The main thing I wanted to say was pay extra and get stainless steel screws. Your customers will thank you for it. It might be the key to getting repeat business. Contrary to popular belief customers still appreciate American quality. They sure will not get it from China.

    1st thing, Great Idea! 2nd, why didn't you use a weed block material vs black plastic? 3rd, especially for taller planters and wider planters, you can put used milk jugs or any other non-toxic to plants plastic containers (ex: cat litter jugs). Cuts down on amount of potting soil needed to buy. Like this though! Good builds!

    Just to put this out there, My Father of my Wife told me when building a flat surface with wood, make sure to orient the curves of so the high side is up and the edges are down. That allows the rain to flow through the grain and not pool at the peak of the curve of the grain, like shingles on a roof.
    Looking at this image at 3:30, these are backward from rain fall. Water would be able to seep in through the grain pattern and settle at the vertex of that arc.

    Nice, but in my village, the Municipal self-government did the same method in the last spring. Today, all of them rotted, and need repairs. The water get in the wood next to the screews and nails.
    More than ten years ago, i made a frame for a window from pine wood, for Mosquito net. I used Lacquer, before assembly and after assemby. The frame is still on the window.

    Nice planters, man.
    Since they will last for nice couple years, my only sugestion is to use a wooden, wedged dowels instead of screws.
    Blind holes, dowel with both ends notched with 90⁰ shift one to another, two little wedges per dowel. When assembled, dowel with wedges in notches, smeared with wood glue, goes in the holes and tap of a mallet will press wedges into notches, securing both boards together.
    Of course it's way more work to do, more than simply masking the screws, but achiving only wooden construction is kind'a cool concept.
