Sales Numbers Don't Equal Popularity

  • OKAY SORRY THIS VIDEO IS A WEEK LATE I STARTED PLAYING NEW WORLD AND THEN I GOT BUSY OOPSIES anyway in this video I talk about how people sometimes misconstrue what exactly sales numbers mean for a game, and that even if a game doesn't "sell well" it can still be insanely popular and have a massive online or in person following.
    twitter: / stryxo
    Twitch: / stryxo
    Some games I mention in this video are PUBG, Minecraft, Wii Sports, Tetris, Grand Theft Auto V, Red Dead Redemption 2, Pokemon, Banjo Kazooie, GEX Enter the Gecko, and Croc and the Legend of the Gobbos. Unfortunately this video is NOT about Minecraft 1.16, Fortnite, Among Us, or Sora being reveal for Super Smash Bros Ultimate but that was pretty sick. WHEN YOU WALK AWAY, YOU DON'T HEAR ME SAY, PLEASE OH BABY DON'T GO, SIMPLE AND CLEAN, IS THE WAY THAT YOU'RE MAKING ME FEEL TONIGHT

    While I do agree that sales don't necessarily mean the game is going to remain relevant, I do think you're putting too much emphasis on gameplay alone. There are a ton of games that don't really aim for having exciting mechanics or interesting gameplay but are still seen as some of the best games out there. Visual novels and JRPGs are definitely the easiest example. Final Fantasy 7 is probably one of the most recognizable games out there but you'd be hard pressed to find someone who says that the gameplay is anything to write home about. I think what matters most is that the game does what it tries to do well. JRPGs focus on stories and characters, Metroidvanias and horror games on atmosphere and so on.

      I’d agree. He mentioned RDR2 but I wouldn’t say RDR2 had good gameplay per se. The narrative and detail of the story was some of the best I’ve ever seen in any media, but the gameplay was a combination of go to place, shoot people, bring thing back, or go to place and shoot people. Still one of my favorite games tho

    That final point on gameplay being the most important part of a game is really interesting. I agree with the statement, but there’s one really weird exception, and that’s with Persona 3
    Most people I’ve seen talk about the game say that it’s REALLY bad (gameplay wise) but the story is what carries it, and people certainly haven’t forgotten about it
    Maybe it’s because it paved the way for future persona games to refine and almost perfect the mechanics in 3, or maybe the fun characters with the added excellent story, but I find it interesting that there are some very rare cases where despite awful gameplay, some games can still stay in people’s minds

    I think the reason, what sales numbers and popularity isn’t just because of gameplay, it’s depends how dedicated the fanbase is. Like the banjo one is very interesting because they have it’s really die hard fans who have no problem vocally expressing how good the game. But that can apply to every game. But in the age of social media. It really dictates that popularity really applies vocal majority. It’s pretty important to distinguish more talked about a game is doesn’t always equal good. Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts is an odd case where it get's unfair hate that's sort of understandable, the biggest problem with that game is that it was made and marketed as "Banjo threeie" or as the next big Banjo Kazooie 3d platforming adventure and it came out after fans waited 8 years for banjo 3, that's the main reason why Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts get's so much hate even though the game is honestly quite fun In my opinion.

    Also the possibility of Mario 64 being inadvertently inspired by it when Argonaut gave pitch to Nintendo of a 3D platformer starring Yoshi either during Mario 64's development or before it is always an interesting tidbit.

    as a game dev I must say enforcing your point that if a new device comes up the first games that comes there sell very well. Like there was people geting rich with smarthphones games on hangman game. its outsold a lot of advanced games sold on steam today. Is simply offer and demand. Gex is a example. Sold well because when it launched n64 didn't had much games available actualy. Popularity is about coming first and coming with the popular devices, marketing and all that stuff. Quality is just one aspect of marketing

    2:46 saying that the game was released "15" times is I would say misleading. Porting a game to a new console is hardly something of note, I would argue that the original release, the release of special edition, anniversary edition, and the VR editions are the only real "releases" of the game, everything else is ports. Especially counting the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 releases as three different releases despite all happening on the same day is ridiculous. Skyrim has been released a ridiculous number of times, but that ridiculous number is three or four. Not 15.

      @aagp2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Re-realasing the same game 4 times is still way too much, especially when you charge $60 every time

    • @mister_i9245
      @mister_i9245 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aagp2 In that case they only re-released the game three times because Anniversary Edition was a 20$ upgrade. Not to mention that Special Edition was free for PC users, though Bethesda still left console players out to dry.

    I'd say that story AND gameplay are both equally important. Sometimes it is handled poorly where gameplay and story do not service each other (like the last of us franchise, haven't finished TLOU2 yet, but I'm getting there) where the story has a more serious tone, but is undermined by itself mindless, outdated gameplay. But a game like Portal manages to intertwine its gameplay and story, both had the same tones and were paired for each other.

    I guess I'm the outlier then, because I grew up with the PC version of Croc and didn't know that Banjo-Kazooie even existed until I was an adult despite owning an N64

    • @Agreel

      Croc being more recognizable is also normal in Poland. Back then, barely anyone actually owned a N64, while PC was the most prominent platform. Also, back in 2000, Croc was released in a video game magazine, which further increased the popularity.

    Sales figures definitely don't equal quality. The best-selling Ratchet and Clank game is the PS4 remake, which is inferior to the PS2 original in basically every conceivable way. The best selling Pokémon games are Red/Blue/Green, which are inferior in basically every conceivable way to their own GBA remakes.

    • @BlueEyedVibeChecker

      Every conceivable way except graphics and performance, because the PS2 had graphics that made the N64 jealous.

    Something that is popular in my opinion is just something enjoyed by a massive amount of people. It can be a fad, or it can be a legendary piece of art. Popularity doesn't speak to quality either. I don't think popularity covers sales numbers either. Free to Play games are also very popular and also exist. Candy Crush, Fortnite and League of Legends are some of the most popular games of all time. These are just facts. Popularity doesn't speak to quality in the slightest. There is a massive difference between popularity and quality and I think it's weird to somehow try to change the definition of popularity when you could have simply changed the argument a little to make it make sense. "Sales Numbers Don't Equal Quality" is just as punchy and more accurately describes what you're trying to say.
