      @@jonathandrouin8717 Emet-Selch can see the color of souls and would recognize the WoL as Azem the moment he laid eyes on them. The difference is that ShB Emet-Selch is so damaged after literally 12k years of loneliness and duty that he can no longer see the WoL for who they truly are. EW Emet-Selch did not share the same trait -- he understands who you are and he would trust you with anything.

    • @alanepithet2931
      @alanepithet2931 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      @@LazzyVamples That's not quite correct; ShB Emet-Selch recognized exactly who you were too. That's why he spent the first half of the expac explaining exactly how everything went wrong and what he's doing, to try to persuade you to join him. When that fails, he spends the next quarter desperately hoping that you'll prove him wrong, that you'll be strong enough to contain the overflowing light, and promises that if you can, then he'll delay their plans by another hundred years or so, to spend that time being your friend.
      And that's why, at the end of Mt. Gulg, when you defeat Innocence and the light begins to overwhelm you, he's so very angry. Because for one fleeting moment he allowed himself to hope his friend was back... only to have that hope dashed. Even then, he still shows how much he cares about Azem by asking you to join him in his undersea lair, where you can transform into a monster in peace, without fear of tearing your friends apart while you're still conscious.
      All of it comes from a place of desperate loneliness, hope, and love. That's one of the reasons ShB remains the best stand-alone expac out of the series.

      I do like the story and Venat's words doesn't gloss over despair and all emotions surrounding it with "lets fix it with happy thoughts!" and rather the grim acceptance of it. It's same with Matsya and the quote from the teachings he repeats.
      It's not colored in happy thoughts, it's actually fairly grim and dark, but if you're a person who's ever been through deep depression you know that the cure isn't a better happier life but learning to cope and manage it, and to do that you gotta face it head on and learn to control it. Cause no matter what, it'll always exist and return, just like every emotion you have. And oftentimes life just isn't fair and some have it way rougher than others and can't manage it.

    • @tenjenk
      @tenjenk 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@prinstyrio0 I suspect that Hydalyn and a past incarnation of the WoL must have been there in the past. The dancer class was developed to combat the Totentaz, which seems to be a weaker version of the song's transformations. Zodiark's shield is weakest in Thavnair. The dancer class originates from Thavnair. The dancer martial arts skill is one of Venat's self developed combat styles.

    Idk if she realized this but, memories returning when the soul is cleansed in the Underworld, means that after we kill Emet in Shadowbringers, he remembers everything and that's why he comes back to help when we face Elidibus. The Hythlodaeus shade we meet at Amaurot knows about all this and says nothing about it, but still calls us his "New old friend" which seems strange in the moment but makes sense now. It's so well woven together, I love it.

      Probably shouldn't have posted this on a video done by somebody who hasn't gotten there yet. Also, the shade of Hythlo we meet isn't Hythlo's sould it's a memory of him from Emet. He calls us "new old friend" because he recognizes we are a shard of Azem and he was friends with Azem. We don't actually meet the "ghost" of Hythlo until we go to the moon as he's part of Zodiark being in the group of ancients that were first sacrificed to create the primal.

      Actually, the Shade in Amaurot would NOT have known this. The Shade was created by Emet while he was still alive and missing his memories. He couldn't have given the Shade memories of things he himself didn't even remember. He calls us "New Old Friend" because we look like Azem to him. Fact is, the shade you meet in the Moon didn't know prior to destroying Zodiark because the memories are only restored once they rejoin the lifestream.

      The way I see it is it comes down to one stray thought while Emet-Selch was creating the image of Hyth in Amaurot...
      "Hyth would know the truth"
      With that stray thought, the shade of Hyth knew all the truth. That he was a shade. That the real Hyth was on the moon in Zodiak. That he can't really do anything to break or of the mold that ES had created for him. That we were absolutely his friend Azem in another form.
      And maybe, just maybe, that we meet once before, and he couldn't tell us because it was too early.

    OK to explain the first bit about the confluence:
    Hythlodaeus knew where the confluence was, and knew he could not destroy it. Emet-Selch was needed to destroy it, but he was busy keeping Hermes locked down (notice, he was flinging magic at Hermes' shield). If Emet-Selch had dropped his attacks to destroy the confluence, it would have given Hermes a chance to retaliate. So, Hythlodaeus comes up with the idea to distract Hermes by threatening to break the confluence open (something he wasn't even capable of doing, but Hermes didn't know that). He fakes making towards the confluence (which is on the opposite side of the platform from where it really is) knowing that Venat has Argos and is no longer chasing Meteion. Hermes takes the bait, and tries to throw Hythlodaeus off the platform but instead the WoL jumps in front of him and takes the hit which only makes it easier to Venat to grab em. This leaves Emet free to destroy the confluence. And as Emet notes, just the kind of trickery and improvisation that they are used to seeing Azem (and Venat) doing, which is how they got the idea for that in the first place.. "It's something Azem would have done" or somesuch.

If Emet-Selch is to be believed he said he was alive for more than 100000 years.. which would a a much more realistic number for all of this having taken place. Lots of fantasies do get timeframes really really wrong… and our sense of timeframes really is scuffed cause we live such short lives and had such extreme development in the last 200 years but ESPECIALLY in the last 50ish years.. like remember watching Back to the Future? Flying cars by like 2015 or 2018.. hah. We could very easy still be in the Middle Ages if it wasn’t for plague and need for invention.

    Crazy that this song came out 12 years ago after the failed launch of the game. You can basically feel the pain of the FFXIV 1.0 release and it's effect on dev team. Then to near perfectly integrate it into FFXIV's story; the lyrics resonate and is more impactful today than when it originally came out. The way the cutscene ends while syncing up to these lyrics is so powerful and will be in my mind forever:
    *_Thy Life is a riddle, to bear rapture and sorrow_*
    *_To listen, to suffer, to entrust unto tomorrow_*
    *_In one fleeting moment, from the Land doth life flow_*

    There is nothing but respect for Venat. Everything she did was to protect her people. "They are my meaning and my purpose. My love." And yet, she had to destroy them. She killed/sundered everyone, she created a world where the shades of her loved ones were exposed to sickness, death, pain and suffering. "I breathe fire and torment." She has become the greatest and cruelest of villains. All in the name of MAYBE securing a way forward for mankind. She loved her people with everything she had, and yet she became Hydaelyn and sundered the world. There was no kindness in that act. It was an act of pure necessity.
    She had to endure a thousand thousand lives worth of years, looking at the suffering she has created. She endeavoured all those years with a heavy conscience and guilt immeasurable. And we didn't know until we met her in Elpis. At the beginning of the expansion, we told her that we can't trust her anymore, we told that to the woman who has given everything in her life to make sure that we survived until we could make it to Elpis. Her blessing saved us over and over again. She revived us after fighting Lahabrea. And she couldn't make us trust her.
    Venat is probably one of my favourite characters of all time. And this cutscene is probably the best cutscene I have ever watched in any game. This scene even recontextualises the track "Answers" for us. "Thou must live, die and know." You cannot move forwards without taking on suffering as our constant companion... I still can't help myself from tearing up whenever I see this cutscene. It's a masterpiece.

      Except we forget that thousands of civilizations DID die due to Meteion running amok unchecked. And Hydaelyn effectively killed the same life she claimed to want to protect so that whole scarficed thing falls flat on its ass.
      Omega EW quests tells us accepting loss does jackshit for Dynamis corruption and to add insult to injury sundered races are MORE vulnerable to Dynamis.
      And ah yes the ancients who provided us both the Ragnarok engine Tech and primal summoning to travel to ultima thule to which two Ancients (Hades and Hythlo) would save our sorry asses to reach the dead ends to which Zenos an ATHER based primal literally burst into the endsingers egg would absolutely be unable to fight Meteion. Yes they absolutely wouldn't have been able to do that.

    • @calsas171
      @calsas171 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@BeathemightyThey were preparing to start creating life for the sole purpose of sacrificing it to Zodiark in order to bring back what they lost, so Venat and HALF of the remaining people who didn't agree made Hydaelyn. Yes Meteion caused a lot of suffering, but that was also, completely Hermes fault by utilizing the poorly understood Dynamis mixed with his own, very evident, confusion on what life was meant for. They couldn't chase down Meteion because 1) they didn't know where she went until far later and they didn't even KNOW about her due to their memories being gone 2) they had no way of getting to her yet 3) they were dealing with the final days, with again, no idea to the cause of it.
      Dynamis is only offset by aether and vice versa, aether is one of the few things Primals are chock full of, so a mother crystal gorged Zenos Primal could in theory break into a Dynamis shell and in practice did.
      You may not like how they decided to do things, but from Venats perspective, she alone knew what was going on, she knew the WOL was important and from the future, a future that had to come to pass in order for the events to happen as they did. She was fated to be Hydaelyn and fracture the world in order to someday, avert the final days.

The realness of grief and fear and so many other emotions were answered with a reason. Because there will be joy. With sorrow is balanced joy and you must strive to push through to bring that joy. Such a simple yet powerful message.
    I sob every time I see this ..I can't really call it a cut scene, it is a mini movie. Look how long it is! and it is so powerful. So I watched again with you and I promise you, I was crying my eyes out.

    When the game's content/story/dialog mirrors that of our lives, it's really hard to hold back emotions like these.
    I guess this is why many find FF14's story so compelling, as some are very relateable. Venat's character being so likeable and seeing her and our character go through so much really tears at you. The last scene with our WoL struggling/marching towards Emet broke so many people.
