You're in for a ride, my friend. Make sure you've got mods who are familiar with the game and can keep chat in check for spoilers, cause this is a game that's better unspoiled. Take your time with it and enjoy the story at your own pace. Don't feel like you have to catch up before Dawntrail's release. It'll still be there when you get to it.
You were also particularly interested in Samurai and Gunbreaker (the gunblade class). You can unlock samurai when you reach level 50 (it's part of Stormblood, which is now included as part of the free trial), and gunbreaker at level 60 (you need to purchase up to Shadowbringers to play this one). There are 8 starting classes to choose from when you start up, but a total of 20 combat jobs, and 11 crafters/gatherers you can unlock along the way, all of which are unlockable on a single character, and you can switch between them at anytime except when in combat.
If you have any questions about mechanics, what to do, or non-spoilery plot explanations, ask the community. In game or in chat, most people are thrilled to help and encourage sprouts (new players) along. There's an immense amount of lore and world-building in this game, and dungeon/trial/raid mechanics that build up as you progress, but you learn as you go and us veterans love to help.
I've been playing xiv since 2020, free trial at first, but fully purchased within just a couple weeks, that's how quickly I got sucked in. Now I'm caught up on main story quests and a good portion of side content, and I still login nearly everyday (I'm even replaying the story on new characters). I love this game a lot and hope you will too!

What server will you choose on the US data center? If you ever choose one go with Cactuar. We have a friendly community and we have a Yo Kai watch event going on now but you have to be lvl 15 to start doing it but you have up to the release of the next expansion, Dawntrail, to finish it. All the stuff you get from it ranges from A Realm Reborn to Stormblood

Highly recommend you don't "fast forward" through the story!
Also, the producer/director has officially stated that he sees players who subscribe for a patch, do the story, then unsubscribe for 2 months is a perfectly valid way to play the game. He's happy if you just come back every 3-4 months for the new patch to keep going along the story with them.
You'll find no development team that respects their players as much as these guys. Pure passion and pure respect for the fans/players and their time.
Also ironically... WoW has more playable animal races than XIV!

Someone who is a FF fan but avoided 14 for a long time: ff14 is a story game first and an mmo second, in a good way. The main story quest gives so much exp and money, there basically is none of the classic mmo grind. The story starts slow, but its worth it to start slow, because it's the only time you get to take it slow, the stakes just get higher and more intense as you go. Lastly, biggest selling point to me is that you can change to any class at any time, you don't need alt characters.

    In order of trailers:
    1.0:
    - This was for the original version of the game that later got scrapped.
    - Those cards they were choosing between are essentially job listings for adventurers.
    - No, the player character doesn't talk, that was just a one off thing they did in this trailer.
    ARR:
    - When they scrapped 1.0 and transitioned to ARR they did it by spending the final months of 1.0 building up to one of the world's two moons getting closer and closer until eventually the events of this trailer happened. This came out the moment the 1.0 servers went down as a final send off before becoming the trailer for ARR.
    - The elezen mage that tried to hold off the dragon, Louisoix, is also the narrator for the in game intro to ARR. When you first start the game a lot of npcs will talk about the calamity 5 years ago and the warriors of light that fought valiantly against it, and how for some reason no one can remember their names or faces anymore. Those warriors of light are the players characters of 1.0.
    Heavensward:
    - Not gonna touch on any questions about the flashback sequence as that entire part is *MASSIVE* spoilers for ARR and really shouldn't have been in the trailer. All the trailers since this have been very good about avoiding story spoilers and only teasing at pretty early plot points for their respective expansions.
    - Dragoons were already in the game before this expansion, but every expansion has a poster boy class that the placeholder main character that represents the player (lovingly referred to as Meteor or Derplander) changes to for the expansion. In the 1.0 trailer he was an Archer, in ARR he was a Warrior, and for Heavensward he switches to Dragoon.
    Stormblood:
    - The woman at the beginning is actually a Monk, as is Meteor for that portion of the trailer. Dancer is also a playable class and does match that aesthetic but wasn't added until Shadowbringers.
    - In the second half Meteor is indeed now a Samurai, one of the two dps jobs added in this expansion and generally the highest damage melee class in the game when played well.
    Shadowbringers:
    - Yes, the player character is a warrior of light, just like the player characters of 1.0 are referred to as in ARR. It's hardly a spoiler to say that the "future sight" thing is called the Echo, but at least as of ARR onward it can't see the future and rather let's you see the past, usually through others' memories.
    - When Meteor is switching classes throughout the fight, yes it's representing what we can play because that's what he's there for, but it's specifically transitioning through all of his previous classes in order and one by one they are all defeated by his enemy until he switches to Dark Knight. Like Dragoon in HW, Dark Knight was not new to this expansion but was the poster boy class for reasons the title makes obvious. Also the way he changes class is almost one to one of how that works in the game since you can level every single job in the game on a single character and freely swap between them by switching your weapon out. You just can't do it mid combat like he is here.
    - You are not tripping, that is a gunblade, and there is a gunblade class. Gunbreaker is a tank class with a gunblade that got added in this expansion along with Dancer.
    - DO NOT skip through the story to get to the expansions! Every expansion builds on the previous ones and skipping the story will make the expansion story fall flat for you and ruin the whole experience. There are callbacks constantly.
    Endwalker:
    - They went in on the trailer for this one because this expansion is the climactic finale of the overarching story that runs from ARR through all the previous expansions. Throughout the trailer it actually transitions between theme music from previous expansions in order.
    Dawntrail:
    - Dual swords since when? Since now lol. It's Viper, one of the two new dps jobs coming in this expansion, the other being the painter they showed called Pictomancer.
    - Saying this has summer update vibes isn't far off. They've called the trip we're about to go on a summer vacation for the WoL, and since this is the beginning of a brand new story arc after Endwalker ended the last 10 year story they seem to be starting things on a lighter note.
    - Regarding the buff cat lady, she's a Hrothgar and the thing that's new is that we're going to be able to make female Hrothgar now. They were added in Shadowbringers as a male only playable race, as well as the bunny girls (Viera) being a female only playable race. In Endwalker we got bunny boys and with Dawntrail they're finally completing the set.
    - The graphics thing you probably heard people complain about was the benchmark test they just released so that people could run a sample of the upcoming new graphics update on their computer to test their hardware. There were a few small oversights with scene lighting and slight character model bugs that people want sorted out which SE have already made a statement apologizing for and saying they'll update the benchmark. As a whole the upcoming graphics update is going to be a major positive and looks fantastic.

      Beautiful responses. Almost no notes.
I will add a caveat however to your point about the story. Namely that skipping the story is not suggested, but especially early on, won't totally *ruin* the game. It's still better to follow the story from the start, but ARR's pacing does throw people off before the game has a chance to pick up, so it's understandable, if regrettable, to skip early story segments. Personally suggest dropping back in around 2.3 if you feel the need to skip, as that's where the story really seems to get its footing.

@@ugxsan Then again, SQENIX have been streamlining and updating the ARR main story quest to be more streamlined and bearable for new players, and to somewhat fix the pacing. When I was starting out on a different datacenter, the ARR wasn't as drawn out and tedious as I remembered.

Here's one specific advice if you ever start playing... DO NOT skip the story, it's arguably THE most important part of the game and believe me... once you'll reach the end of your journey, it'll pay off, Tenfold.
Other than that, just enjoy the game and do not hesitate to ask for help, people in-game are SUPER nice and will always try to help newcomers, in fact FFXIV is known for its ridiculously friendly community, while WoW's is infamous for being Toxic

Thirding this. Just let people in the group know that you're new, and most will be patient with you. Just make sure you read your tooltips so you know what your skills do. They start you off slow, so you can get used to it. Also, when the orange marker on the ground disappears, that's when the AoE goes off, not the animation. I would recommend JoCat's guide to ff14 for this. Keep in mind that he's being a bit satirical, but the info is solid.

Honestly 90% of players will actually give you shit if you skip story stuff and try to rush. Lol it really is a story and you shouldn't try to skip to the end. The biggest tips I can give: ARR can be slow, but it pays off I'm the long run. It's a lot of setup and world building for the future expansions. If you can get through that, you're gonna love it. Second tip is to TAKE YOUR TIME. There's no reason to rush, players can join you for lower level stuff at no real penalty to themself, so definitely take your time to enjoy the world and story. My friend is now on shadowbringers, and he started back in 2019. He doesn't get to play all the time (work, irl, etc.) there's literally no "hurry up so you can do this" mentality. FFXIV story is absolutely amazing, but keep in my it still has all of the trappings of an mmorpg. Don't be afraid to skip a fetch quest here or there, but do watch all the cutscenes and read the major dialogue. Payoffs can extend across multiple expansions and guaranttee you that cathartic feeling you're looking for in a story. Once you get rolling you won't want to stop. In the end, you'll be able to look back fondly on your adventure and say that the journey was worth it :)

Ive never clicked a video so fast in my life! Holy shit, I'm so happy youve taken the time to watch these trailers! Lore in FF14 is suuuper deep/heavy, like deep fried chocolate shake heavy, all of the events in the trailers become more clearer as you play through the story so dont worry about being confused especially with Shadowbringers and Endwalker! If you are to stream the game, i recommend it its pretty fun and exciting. Although if you do, have follow/sub mode on to prevent people from spoiling anything. Yes there are people like that unfortunately. Yes Samurai and Gunbreaker classes are super dope! And hell yes! The music and trailers is top tier! Tbh theres a lot of content to go through and its a super good time! Can't wait to play with you my dude! I'll be in the Cactar server!

Ahhhh, my beloved FFXIV! I started the game about 2 years ago, and I loved it from the moment the game opened up!
Fun fact: the second trailer is actually an in game event that happened before they shut the servers down. Players that were on before the servers shut down actually saw that moon descending closer and closer down to their world. And when the servers shut down, that exact cinamatic played. They shut the servers down because they completely re worked the game, and then FFXIV: A Realm Reborn came to be!
Edits as I watched the video
28:18 yes! There is a Dancer and Samurai class! Both are DPS with dancer being a ranged support DPS and Samurai being a melee high damage class.
31:32 yup! Your character is the Warrior of Light and Darkness(Darkness coming after the Shadowbringers expansion)
32:10 yup! Every single expansion is a continuous story, with the saga ending in Endwalker. They made a story pretty much out of resetting the game! Dawntrail is the new expansion that will be coming out in June, which will introduce a new one!
    34:42 yup! Same person
    35:10 yes, siiiiir! 😄
35:24 yup! There is a gun blade class which is a tank class called Gunbreaker
37:42 no! Don’t skip any of the story, because as I said before, it’s a continuous story. If you skip any of it, you’ll be lost when you get to later expansions
47:47 yes! That is a new class coming out in Dawntrail called Viper. It will be a melee DPS class
48:28 yup! That is another new class coming out in Dawntrail called Pictomancer! Which will be a ranged magical DPS class!
50:52 that’s very fair, something I also really appreciate about WoW is how anatomically different each race is. It really separates each race from each other. But it is also a cultural thing. As FFXIV was made in Japan, there is a trope called Kemonomimi in Japan that is used for any human-animal hybrids. So while WoW goes all out anthropomorphic animal like races (I.e Worgan, Tauren), FFXIV sticks to humans, but with cat ears and a tail or bunny ears. While WoW was made in the west, where that kind of trope is not very common in western media.

One very important thing to know about FF14, and why I love it so much: YOU are the focus of the game's story. You're the Warrior of Light. (Yes, every PC is the Warrior of Light, but when you're doing group content it's "The Warrior of Light and their friends", which is a bit silly). It's not like most MMOs where "Here's the story, you're kinda taking part, but off to the side". It's "This is your story. YOU are changing the world."

to tack on it is /highly/ recommended, not skipping the story to get to expansions, as like you predicted, it's connected, 1.0 (aka everything before a realm reborn) onwards is connected together, through the stories of ARR and on. and for the social aspect of it all, the fact you would come in as a "sprout" aka a new player, you basically immediately get a bunch of people surrounding you to help you through the story and have fun. I have heard form WoW vets say that the ff14 community is one of the most welcoming and embracing communities they have ever seen.

The Main story quests and the blue+ quests are must ( the blues unlock other content). If you like story, this is the game for you, comedy , tragedy, high adventure, and everything in between.

I've played this game since the Beta of 1.0, the first iteration of this game that eventually got crashed and burned. This game does story the best but you should not fast foward through the early stuff untill the good stuff comes along. The 2.0 A Realm reborn story sets up all the dominoes for the expansions to use if you skip early events and story in a rush to come to the "good stuff" you will miss out.
The story they weave starting with 2.0 goes all the way through the expansions building up and will reach a great climax in Shadowbringers and Endwalker. But the big moments and reveals will not land if you've missed something.
I also recommend to take your time to do raid content at the end of each expansion. Every dungeon raid and piece of content has some story to it. Some of it is standalone, some of it is tied directly to the overal story.
If you're trying to figure out which MMO to play between the two big ones. Jesse Cox has a 36 minute video called "15 years of wow versus 1 year of FFXIV" , it perfectly lines up the big differences between the two without spoiling. and will help you decide on where to start.

@5:16 the monster Morbor is a shout out to one of the early Final Fantasy programers. The monster is known for its bad breath attack, the programmer was a chain smoker. Morbor (monster) = Marlboro (cigarette brand). @11:30 there has been at least one artificial moon as part of the plot in a FF title. @32:20 yes they brought the lore from FF14 1.0 to 2.0+ there is a mention from an NPC about The Great Goobo Wall. That was in the last months of 1.0 when they knew they were going to nuke the servers. The GMs and Dev's got to spawn really high lvl monsters into the starting cities. Back then mounts took up physical space so a line of them could block players / mobs. The biggest rideable mounts were Goobo. High lvl player characters lined up to block the monsters getting at low lvl characters so the newbies could get out of the cities and start adventuring.

If you play ff14, please dont story skip, even though a realm reborn can be a slog, a good amount of story bits continue in future expansions (its a continous story) so quite a bit of context can be lost if skipped, a realm reborn does have its moments, not to mention learning about a lot of characters and world building. I would say ff14 is pretty heavily backloaded with its quality content but that doesnt necessarily mean the early stuff isnt important.

The only tip I have though is, it might be more fun to run it with some friends, especially in A Realm Reborn (the base game). A Realm Reborn will be quite long, depending on how fast you're willing to go trough it. But, I will say... It gets better. The story is good that it did keep me playing. I didn't play any FF games before 15 and then 14, but to me Final Fantasy means epic music, epic bosses and just an experience that gives you goosebumps and makes your blood pump.
It's a hopeful feeling, a joyful one. One that relishes just being able to experience this game (in 14's case with others.) That's Final Fantasy.
There's something so cathartic about watching someone go through that same 'oh shit' moment we all did seeing Dalamud in ARR and hearing 'Answers' for the first time. It hits even harder after Endwalker, where everything comes full circle. Still gives me goosebumps every time without fail.
Sappy shit aside: If you already like the older games, then I definitely think you will enjoy 14. Especially since in recent years they have worked to make the main story fully solo-able, meaning you do not have to engage in any socializing or teaming up with others if you don't want to. You can play through the story like you would any single-player Final Fantasy game. (And it has a free trial up to award-winning Stormblo--)

The cat lady you saw in the end isn't actually from a new race, but she is the tease at the un-gender locking of her race, as previously the Hrothgar (her race) were exclusively comprised of males... basically fixing what was a glaring issue for both people who may have wanted to play them, or from a lore standpoint.
Though I wouldn't blame you for not knowing that as someone new to the game's specific lore AND because unfortunately 2 races in the game are kinda left to the wayside storywise unless you elect to play them so they get representative.

Some information regarding classes (or as they're referred to : Jobs) :
    - While you pick one class to start the game with, by the time you complete your Lv.10 class quest, this unlocks the ability to visit the other class guilds to go and unlocked them. As such, your character can unlocked and level ALL classes and jobs on the same character. Alts are pretty much if you want a different character altogether but if your interest is only in the jobs themselves, then you only need one character.
    - After completing your Lv.30 class quest, your next 'class' quest will unlock the corresponding "Job", which is an advanced version of your class and enables much more advanced abilities. This goes for every class that you can start with including the Rogue that you can unlock in one of the cities. However, future Jobs do not have a base class and once unlocked, you immediately get their job stone as well.
    - Jobs that were added in later expansions have prerequisites before you can unlock them, usually having at least one Job at a given level, in case of Heavensward, you need to have access to the new city hub and the other jobs tend to be available at the start of the previous expansion's level cap that they were introduced in. It may sound complicated but really, a rule of thumb is "reach the next level cap tier from one expansion to unlock two new jobs in either of the three starting cities".
    - Classes and Jobs are role-locked. This means that, for example, the Samurai is a DPS job and can only assume a DPS role. Unlike WoW which has specs that let you have a given class assume one or two roles depending on the one you use, FFXIV have their jobs hard-locked.
    - The Tank classes / jobs are : Gladiator (which becomes Paladin), Marauder (which becomes Warrior), Dark Knight and Gunbreaker
    - The Healer classes / jobs are : Conjurer (which becomes White Mage), Scholar (which is unique as it branches from the Arcanist which is a Magic DPS class), the Astrologian and the Sage.
    - The Melee DPS classes / jobs are : Pugilist (which becomes Monk), Lancer (which becomes Dragoon), Rogue (which becomes Ninja), Samurai and Reaper. Dawntrail announced the Viper as a new melee DPS job.
    - The Ranged DPS classes / jobs are : Archer (which becomes Bard), Machinist and Dancer
    - The Magic DPS classes / jobs are : Thaumaturge (which becomes Black Mage), Arcanist (which becomes Summoner but also Scholar) and Red Mage. Dawntrail announced the Pictomancer as a new magic DPS job.
    - There are also 'gathering' and 'crafting' classes which, unlike most MMORPGs, are their own, full-fledged classes with their own questlines. Those too, you can pick up after Lv.10 and they all have their own actions, passives and possible recipes. Crafting involves a lot more than just selecting a recipe and waiting on a progress bar as you actually need to balance between increasing the quality of a craft while also making sure you finish it's progress before the durability of a craft runs out.
    - Crafting classes also unlocks QoL features like being able to meld materia by yourself instead of paying an NPC to do it for you (which are slotted into gear to increase their stat) as well as the ability to repair your own equipment, allowing to increase it's durability over 100% so it requires maintenance less often. The Culinarian and Alchemist also allows you to make food buff items and potions that can give you an edge in dungeons and content.

Fun thing you may have noticed especially since you were watching them back to back: In the Shadowbringers trailer, the WoL was changing classes in the order they were in the trailers. Archer(1.0)>Warrior(Realm Reborn)>Dragoon(Heavensward)>Monk(Stormblood)>Samurai(Stormblood again).
Good news is Samurai and Gunbreaker (the class that uses gunblades) are classes you can play! The bad news is they are not starting classes. You can unlock Samurai once you have a class at lvl 50, and Gunbreaker once you have a class at lvl 60.

The interesting part is that as the trailers continue, you can see the warrior of light (the same main guy in all the trailers) lose his smile aside from brief confidence and adventure but doesn't last for long due to duty, war, or general danger. Dawntrail's trailer is one of the only in a long time where the W.O.L. is constantly smiling and is excited to be a part of the adventure, and personally, its extremely refreshing our character gets to feel happy for once in the trailers.

Dawntrail is set to be released July 2nd 2024 with a 4 day early access (starting June 28th) if you pre-order the expansion. It is said to basicly be the "beach episode" expansion after all the world ending we had the last couple years. Its also the start of a complete new storyarc. So right now is a great time to get started, you basicly experience the new story with the rest of the community.

So glad to hear you liked the cinematics. A few things from a FFXIV vet to a new player:
    1. It is up to you if you skip cutscenes or not, but since you expressed interest in the story, especially the later expansions, I recommend not doing so. The beginning can feel a bit slow to people, but it's because it has the unenviable task of trying to set up the story going forward, as well as trying to weave in 1.0 references for people who weren't there.
    2. Definitely have some twitch mods that know the story and are able to remove spoiler messages or are able to put twitch in emote-only mode during big story beats. The FFXIV community gets very excited about people hitting those big moments, but can get a little overzealous and spoil things.
    3. One character can be all classes, so while it's important to pick a starting class you think you'll like, don't think of it as the end-all, be-all decision of a lifetime. You can max out all classes if that is your wish.
    4. Some dungeons are required for the main story. You can do them with people if you wish, but if you are the type of person who wants to not have to rush and be able to look around the dungeon and read any literature that lies around in some dungeons, you are able to do those dungeons with a group of NPCs. Entirely up to you.
    5. You mentioned you played FFXVI. Well, much of the same team that made FFXVI made FFXIV. So for instance, Soken is the composer for both games, Yoshida is the director and producer, etc. (Creative Business Unit III)
I will definitely try to catch these streams, I love people coming to explore our world!

32:08 The writers are *_exceptionally_* good in FFXIV of finding ways to connect new story beats and lore connect back to elements previously established when they couldn't have known at the time where they would taking the story. The continuity of the lore in this game is sublime.

The trailer songs usually get brought in as a song for an important boss fight too, and if you have a keen ear you can also hear their motifs throughout other songs in each expansion. I highly suggest that you watch each expansions trailer as you get to its starting point and see it with the eyes that players would have at the time, and maybe even again after each expansion, and events become more clear.
Others have probably said, but each trailer was represented with a different main class for the warrior of light, an archer(/bard) for 1.0, warrior for 2.0 ARR, Dragoon for 3.0 heavensward, both Monk and Samurai for 4.0 Stormblood, Dark knight for 5.0 Shadowbringers (and also the warrior of light cycled through each class in the trailer fighting their foe until getting to the dark knight), Paladin for 6.0 Endwalker, and for 7.0 Dawntrail he became the new class Viper that has the dual sword-twinblades as seen in the trailer.

Pretty solid that you picked up the lore implications of the realm reborn cutscene. That was actually the cutscene that played when the 1.0 game was cut off. The last thing people saw was Bahamut razing the earth and then the servers were shut down. You could actually run around and see the meteor in the sky when it got close. Then when ARR came out we got the rest.

One thing to note; only the expansion trailers after Heavensward revealed new classes. Stormblood revealed Samurai (but Red Mage also came out as the second class). Shadowbringers revealed Gunbreaker and Dancer. Endwalker revealed Sage and Reaper. Dawntrail revealed Viper and Pictomancer.
The character that is supposed to represent us, designated "Meteor," in each of these trailers usually starts out as classes that could already be played. Like Warrior, Dragoon, Monk, Dark Knight, and Paladin.

That first trailer with the world ending as you called it hits so hard after having done the full story. I only just started playing a year or two ago and after 800 some hours finished the base story up through Endwalker, still finishing up all the leveling and unlocking other things.
A Realm Reborn is super hard to get through in my opinion because a lot of it doesn't seem to matter, but as someone else commented, it all makes sense WAY down the road. Only Storm Blood seemed kinda not related but some people still love that expansion.
I cheated and bought a character boost in the beginning of my play since I just wanted to get through the story, even then it still took me forever to finish. Hope you enjoy it though! I love that it's great for solo or group play and I don't have to make 20+ characters to try all the classes out.

The Answers trailer is the most significant event in gaming, its the actual reboot of the game, the transition from the failed 1.0 to ARR. The war being faught in the Cartenau Flats was a fight to stop Dalamund from breaking open, but they failed. Do the Binding Coils raids to learn how everything ended

24:40 Dragoons have been in 14 since day 1. It's a rule that when there's a new expansion/trailer, the fans bet on which class the Warrior of Light (the main guy in the trailers) is gonna be. So starting from 1.0 to now, we have Archer/Bard, Marauder/Warrior, Lancer/Dragoon, Pugilist/Monk, Samurai, Dark Knight, Gladiator/Paladin, and now Viper.

Your definition of a FF game is exactly what I have come to acknowledge as well. I started playing FF with 16, then that got me into 7 remake and then rebirth, and now 14. My buddy who has played FF all his life basically, idk which one he started with, has said that every game for the most part has had different combat mechanics in some way shape or form.
