For those who wear a continuous glucose monitor like a freestyle libre, the phone does have an NFC sensor just below the camera bump. If you slide the back of the phone and stop when the glucose monitor touches the bottom of the bump, the phone can read the monitor.
Great review! I've been veey pleased with mine, mine still opens flat which im pleased about, and I've been thrilled with some of the keepers I've had from the camera, the zoom sensor in particular is stunning. I still can't sell my Pixel Fold though, I keep wanting to, but I love the aspect ratio, and weight/feel of it.

FYI the issue with the gmail notifications is actually an issue with the Google sync for your gmail account. Go into the account settings for the phone and tell it to sync your google account to see what specific google app is causing the sync issue. Its not an issue specific to OnePlus phones, and it seems like you just got unlucky with that bug. I've had it in the past as well.
how do you know which app is causing syncing issues?
I have the same "gmail" notification problem with my Xiaomi Mi device too. But I forwarded my gmail mails to another mail service's app and that app is works perfect with the notifications.
For all those who have an issue with holding the phone, I bought a case for my OnePlus open (I'm not going to promote a certain brand of case bc there's many out there) that has a protective covering over the camera. It makes the camera bump slightly bigger. Yes it's slightly more intrusive but it gives me a way to comfortably hold the phone with one hand with it ks closed or when I have it open in landscape mode.

Thanks for doing a few month out review, helpful especially considering I am wondering about the durable of hinge, screen, etc related to the fold. And whether once the novelty wears off, if the phone remains fun and easy to use on a daily basis.
Great clip! Had the Open for a month (emerald dusk). Heard numerous good things from many reviewers. Occasionally, the news feed will go blank, thus restart..but occasionally. Other than that, hardware and rest of the software has been great. In car, unfolded with Google Maps. At desk, folded - checking emails, calls, text. Unfolded - open canvas of social media, editing pictures etc.
I love my OnePlus Open and I will say mine has proven to be extremely durable. I mean I dropped it pulling it out of my pocket and while the rail has a few pretty significant dings in it both screens and the camera module are still flawless. The screen protector on the outside screen got wrecked but the screen itself was undamaged.
And I absolutely love the folding form factor.
So now I'm trying to decide if I want to trade my S22U for the upcoming S24U or get the Zfold 5 instead. I kind of feel like I'm over slab phones 😅
I have mine for a few days now and its an amazing phone, had a Fold 3 before what a difference cant go back for sure. Just with the fold i can put different color backround when i put several apps in one folder, i think it's impossible with the Open its a detail but i was using those colors for a long time and this is easier to find files.. after this all is better with the Open

I definitely think right now in the western world with every foldable that's available it's 💯 the king of the castle. my experience so far after 4 weeks has been nothing short of amazing tho i have had bouts of lag scrolling the screen at times but in the main absolutely no regrets up till now 👍

I've noticed the wifi/connectivity issue complaint come up semi-regularly on the OnePlus Open subreddit, and it appears to happen only to certain devices seemingly at random.
Makes me wonder if it's possibly a supplier issue for the antennas of a batch of the Opens, where OnePlus is contracting mutliple antenna manufacturers for the phone and one of them is defective/faulty.
Could also just be poor carrier provisioning.
How about the videos and stabilisation, especially during night mode and low light. Any good?
Mine has wonky wifi too. It doesn't seem to roam access points well at all it will stay connected to a far away one when i'm sitting next to one. WiFi will also randomly just disconnect and reconnect. Not my APs all my other devices are working normally.
Hey Shane, thank you for your great reviews. Something your viewers might want to know is that there are internal display issues. I have only been using my OnePlus open for 2 weeks and already the screen has a defect directly where the fold is. Unfortunately, the One Plus open exchange is only 15 days. Now I have to wait for up to another 2 weeks for repair. Something OnePlus buyers might want to be aware of.

just to note, the z fold 5 does in fact have face unlock when unfolded. this must have been a feature added from zf4 to zf5. only stating to let others know. I honestly hadn't noticed one way or the other as I use the fingerprint a lot.
I have face unlock on my inside screen as well, I have a z fold 3
One issue I have is sometimes I feel swiping up from the bottom to take you to the home acreen doesn't register when using a case. I had the same problem when swiping on the sides to go back but I found an option to increase the sensitivity but only for the sides. I wish they had that option for the bottom swipe as well.

Got mine on launch day. Coming from Duo 2 there's obviously been some things I preferred on the Surface but this phone is the best option available presently from what I've seen out there to replace it. Only complaint I've had is no matter what I do I CANNOT get the phone to vibrate for notifications. I get all my notifications fine, they just won't vibrate.
Came from the duo too, i hated the duo cause of the bugginess but after using the oneplus ive noticed that there are some really good ideas / UIUX features one the duo that really prefer, unexpected surprise

I started to have a love hate relationship with my Open. For many of the reasons you pointed out, it gets old and fast. The biggest issue I have is how it handles AndroidAuto and how the putter display has weird keyboard edge rejection bugs. Otherwise it’s been fun. My last annoyance is sometimes it feels like it can’t run apps at 120hz and it gets really sluggish and sloppy for some reason.

@@DTunezOfficial Nothing. My Open has been flawless. I cannot wait for 14 to be released, as it has improved my 11 even more. But the Open is just awesome. It has been fast, not sluggish, super fast and damn, I use this thing for everything! The multi -tasking is just excellent.

Great review in my experience afther 2 month I game a lot and inner screen scratch up had to send in to change screen protector or screen damage I think the screen protector didn’t resist not happy image having to send in to replace a screen protector not good.
Does one plus open have option to use both screens when taking photos for the person on other side to see view finder ? Samsung and Pixel Fold support this feature.
Good review, I agree with you on the screen brightness. Not had notification issues, all works like it should. Also I don't like the haptic feedback, feels cheap
Thanks Shane, I appreciate your videos and insights. Funny enough watching your videos about the Pixel Fold and the OnePlus Open makes me very happy I went with the Z Fold 5. Feels like the Pixel Fold and the OnePlus Open still have too many compromises for me.

No matter how many reviews I watch I still can’t decide between the Open and the pixel fold. The pixel fold gets a bad wrap but there is something about it i like
It’s noticeably heavy but I like the feel and size of it. The inner screen on the pixel fold feels cheap as hell. Also if you buy only buy it from carrier or google directly

Coming from the ZF5, im missing motion photo, gif as contact photo, and chrome is really laggy. Other than that I'm mostly using the Open then my ZF5.
it was 1099 at best buy for 2 days with google fi or any activation but with google fi you didnt have to activate the sim crazy deal the phone was 1100$
I have the Z Fold 5, love how these foldable phone have come a long way. OnePlus Open looks like a good phone, but I went with the Z Fold 5 because Samsung is what I've been accustomed to, love the video. Keep up the good work

I had the same notification issue on my 9pro so i don't think it's just the Open. I think OnePlus is doing something that is causing notifications to not come thru sometimes . Eventually the issue resolved but it was months of me looking into the issue. There were others in the forums with the same issue.
I've had the OnePlus open for about a week. I am so glad that there was a thin screen protector on the front because I dropped it and I thought I had actually scratched the front screen. But they're just surface level scratches on the screen protector. With that being said, I have enjoyed my experience so far with the OnePlus open. I'm just so used to the pixel experience that oxygen OS. Is just difficult for me to navigate. I'm not really a fan of how it looks. I can agree with everything you said in this video. The one thing I don't like about the OnePlus open or rather what I prefer about my pixel fold. I😅s how the assistant voice typing is used on the pixel device. I use that so much. The voice typing on the OnePlus isn't that great. For me. That could be a deal breaker. I use the Google Assistant religiously. One plus Google Assistant implementation is okay but it's definitely not on pixel level. I love its display. I am definitely a fan of the hardware and the design. I think the Pixel software is smoother and silkier but the OnePlus open does very well.

that nearly invisible crease now is showing that left/right-side double-crease (double crease being unique to OnePlus and Oppo Find N3 due to the carbon used underneath and the mechanism they use).
@TechWithBenefits mentioned that the crease will eventually appear its just the nature of the technology and device category - so he was right.

Got replaced twice cause of the weird camera condensation issue, and still has it. Can't take pictures in cold 😢.
My software 8ssue with the OnePlus Open is I have 5 smart watches and when they're off and I end a phone call I keep getting notifications on the bottom of the screen saying can't connect to galaxywatch6, can't connect to Ticwatch5pro, can't connect to pixel watch and it's very annoying. It only happens when the watches are off or I'm away from all the watches. My other issue is with silent notifications. I can't close them on my OnePlus Open but I can on my Pixel Fold. The last thing my widgets look weird sometimes and I have to remove them and place the widget again. It mostly happens with my TH-cam widget and Weather Channel widget.
My biggest question before buying is compatibility. I have a Samsung Watch, use Android Auto, use the Phone on PC android app, Google Assistant is my best friend, and have a bunch Google apps that are synced between all my devices. I'm worried the Oxygen OS and software/hardware difference is going to wreck the synergy. Also, I have ADHD and RELY on notifications and reminders from my calendar and task apps like TickTick. Anyone have any experience with problems like this? I really want to try this phone, but this is the concern that's told me back.
I can't answer the rest of your questions, but you will have absolutely using Samsung watch with 1+.
You had adaptive brightness on when comparing the brightness. When its off it increases peak brightness
This is exactly backwards. You only get the temporary peak brightness boost with adaptive turned on.
I've also encountered a similar WIFI issue like yours when connecting to a WIFI6 router. Doesn't happen all the time though

It sadly doesn't continue when you open or close while watching a video on Facebook. Also does it say on the website that there is a tilt-mode in camera but I haven't found it. Also tilting a photo in edit is not present, something I am missing. Overall it's a good phone but I still have to get used to it.
The notifications of WhatsApp only give me the oldest new message notification, I don't see the new message with a new notification sadly.

At 12:10 how did your phone automatically go to homescreen after face unlock? I have to manually swipe up and I can't seem to find a setting for this?
Go to face unlock in settings and click face unlock, then screen unlock
I used to have notification problems for whatsapp and i resolved it by going to "optimize battery use" and select "don't optimize" for the app. Worth looking into maybe.
Mentioned in the video, isn't an option for Gmail, didn't fix Hydro Coach.

No, esim is garbage lol. I switch too much.
Just a note for any viewers; the Open has had software updates since this and no longer keeps one window expanded when using 2 fingers to split the screen and go into multitasking; I just tested with youtube and a couple other apps and they open properly, split down the middle and the correct half-screen size now.
Awesome video! I find the long term reviews and re-reviews to be substantially more useful than whatever people spit out in a week.

EDIT: Small correction though at 12:43, Z Fold 3, 4 and 5 all do offer face unlock regardless of whether we are using the camera on the cover display or the inner display camera.

@@scaryifliteralyep on my lock screen I'll see the whole camera cutout area go black and it'll face unlock for me. Checked with a co-worker who's still rocking her ZF3 and it's doing it for her too.
I think the email notification issue comes with one of the recent Android updates, I have a S23 Ultra and I noticed mine does the same thing. My email notifications do not come in until I open my email app. And one I stop using it, it goes back to not sending me notifications. I wonder if they did that as a battery saver option. 🤷🏿♂️
My OnePlus Open was and is the only device this is happening to. Also have the long running history of these exact issues with Chinese Android devices like recent OnePlus devices since the merger with color OS.

Found the fix! Looks like my personal Gmail came in with notifications for priority only. In Gmail settings set notifications to all.

A lot apps just get bigger or spread out. If you rotate it, more apps will adopt a tablet layout.
Just wanna say, i got a Google Pixel 6. The problem with notifications not coming up, i got that one too. And i have no idea why.

Well seeing all the OnePlus issues there is nothing major and nothing that would surprise me. OnePlus buyers knew they are going to beta test Open. Open 2 vs. Fold6 could be tight.
Quick question or observation... When using Facebook Messenger on the right side of the split big screen... photos cannot be taken. Pressing the circle to capture a photo will not do anything for me LOL.

Only issue i have, and its minor is that the phone doesn't fully open. It is just annoying. Oh and on some apps the text doesn't fully show. I haven't found a fix for it yet. Overall, I love this phone.

I swapped from my Oneplus 9pro to the S22 ultra due the small oneplus screen. I upgraded to the Z fold 5 from the S22 ultra, but samsung has terrible network issues. I hate the fold 5 front screen, so small and network issues are terrible. Im constantly struggling to get a good a signal, versus my Oneplus 9pro had amazing signal.

Coming from a Samsung user for gazillion years and last having the FOLD 3 I cannot say how good the OPPO N3 FOLD is !! Especially the open screen ...you cannot see the middle compared to my Galaxy.
There is a deal breaker. Support and lack of. Mine devoloped a fault on the main screen and it disappeared into the repair ether about a month ago and there are no lead times. I've been told to just be patient. No other feedback. The phone didn't last 3 months and I'd been babying it.
So do you have an update? What phone will you recommend after this experience?

With a tp-link router, I was about to specify my Open specifically should just use 2.4ghz.
I had to comment that I am a BIG fan of the volume rocker at the top. And I HATE pixel fold volume rocker in the middle of the device. The power button and volume rocker should be in the top 30% of the phone leaving room for grabbing the phone. My 2 cents, cheers m@te

I turned off the smart 5g feature and turned on keep data on in dev mode and my cell signal has been consistent since
I had messed with combinations of these settings, but I'm not sure it ever helped lol. Next time my SIM is in there I'll try again..

Ive had the device for 3 weeks now and its been fantastic. I get all of my notifications including G-Mail. Maybe it has to with sync settings. It has its moments where the UI will have a delayed response with a gesture loading but other than that ive had no issues.
The split view with one app expanded shouldn't be this way by default. Hopefully some updates soon.

Question. Do you have bad eyesight? Because I can quite easily see the crease.
When the screen is on and you're looking straight at it, you're not going to see the crease. When you tilt it to be off axis and with lighting hitting it just right, of course it's going to be visible. It's also going to be a lot less visible than its competitors. I'm sure these are all things you know though.
7:00 manual brightness does not go up to 2800 nits. Only gets that high on auto brightness.
Both devices are set to adaptive brightness, not manual. I'm aware that using manual robs you of the temporary brightness boost to peak brightness. I quite literally put a lamp over them both to trigger the adaptive brightness in this video.. Why would I have done that if it were on manual?
I honestly prefer the actual sound of the pixel fold over this. More Bass + louder doesn’t always mean better sound
Bass is going to have diminishing returns if it is pushed too far, but to my ears, the Open simply has a fuller overall sound. Look at it as the Pixel is lacking bass more than the Open is overdoing it.
I have been loving OnePlus recently, but the amount of small bugs prevent me from staying on one. Examples, double pressing the power button locks the phone before opening the camera app - this prevents me from switching apps or doing anything else before unlocking the phone again. Also, any widget that scrolls has an issue where it 'presses in' like you are going to hard-press interact with it like editing the widget.
Small bugs like this may bother just me and my OCD, but it's these little things that add up.

The volume rocker is way up too high but I still can't get past that enormous camera hump and the lack of wireless charge. My hope is that Sammy will finally redesign the Z-Fold 6 to be similar to this design.

This is a common and well known issue with OnePlus devices. By the way, I know that you've not turned off battery optimization on Gmail because... You can't lol. It's literally not an option for Gmail.
