I’ve had it before where I’ve re threaded the stripped part with a die of a smaller diameter. And used a smaller nut. Full thread length that way. Works fine with a suitable washer. Takes a bit of care as the stripped shaft obviously isn’t the correct diameter for the die I’m using. But with split dies you can make it happen. Creep up on it tightening the die each time.
If you put the wheel on the shaft, no nut or key, and spin it with valve grinding compound you create a much better fit and you also remove any of those high spots
While fixing it works, the threads are bad enough that I wouldn't risk it. Time is money and at what should be $95-120 minimum per hour, you are approaching the cost of a 100% new helm (with a warranty) to try and salvage this.
Dang I just got done doing this same job last week!!! luckily I didn’t have to use a nut chaser but I did have trouble releasing the cable. I used loctite on the nut just for reassurance so it won’t easily work loose
I have to replace my rotary steering. It literally started falling apart from rust. It still works but my steering is a bit crunchy 😂 I can't get the pin to push in.
Why don't you use the files on the bottom of your snapon kit to smooth out the threads before using the chaser. Thats whats they are for.

How about a file? A triangle file would have done the trick easy and more accurately
If you can't get enough threads to engage, you can sand the grooves off of the taper, which will make it sit lower.

I think I'd use locktite on that because the nylon doesn't have much to grab. My first choice would be to scrap it.

You saved it. There is not much mechanical efforts applied on the steering wheel, so your fix should do the trick.

drill a hole at top of nut and use a cotter pin
