    Great to see this dog being worked at the same time as your commentary. More like this please!

    I watched your video with Harris and his retrieve issue. I just wanted to share my experience. Perhaps it gives an idea.
    I have had my Border Collie since she was a puppy,. She always loved retrieving the dummies. But suddenly she didn't seem to be so enthousiastic anymore and - like Harris in the video - caught the dummy all right, but soon dropped it and didn't retrieve it anymore. I was at a loss. I have never put any pressure on her. Over time I gave up on it. Then, after a general medical check-up of the dog and a subsequent MRI, it was discovered that the dog had a broken tooth root, which must have been over 1 year back!! That's why she lost interest in retrieving. The tooth was removed and now, after a period of convalescence and new training, she retrieves again with joy and without fail.
    (please pardon my broken English...)

    Bending over a dog is a dominant or intimidating gesture for headstrong dogs especially. Stand up and smile at him to keep his attention. 😊

    Well done for diagnosing the root cause that the owner had somehow forgotten. Hopefully he'll be left with you so you can straighten him out properly.

    Try a clicker retrieve, or back chain with another behaviour like a touch?

    Hi Charlie, we move your videos and have found your advice so helpful. We have a 18 month (pet) WCS who doesn’t like retrieving. He’ll do it sometimes but other times he’ll go out for it, then either do a lap of victory until he finds a more interesting smell, or he’ll actually run the ball away a bit and drop it, as if to say stop throwing it. Haha. We keep retrieves to a minimum so he doesn’t get too bored but it just doesn’t seem to be of interest to him.
    He’s also learnt to ignore his name when sniffing and I’m not sure how to break that habit…

    Two things:
    (1) my dog did this and one day I met a springer owner and I said maybe he can show mine how to retrieve. His dog retrieved the dummy and mine waited until he dropped it then grabbed it and held onto it. After this, he understood what to do and hasn’t stopped retrieving.
    (2) has Ash got his 🪰🪰 down?! 😱😱🤣🤣

    I’m a first time gundog owner and currently having this issue with my 4 month old ESS boy, he’s doing really well returns to the whistle , sits to the whist, hunts to the whistle, sits as I throw the dummy, swimming lessons on a Saturday in the res 😂 and he’s picked all this up with ease ive not put much pressure on him and I’m now going to leave his training at this point now nothing new for another 6 months just keep topping these things up, he will retrieve but only to hand 3-10 but the rest is a mixture of either dropping it a foot away from me or sitting 3-4 foot away and mouthing it, I’ve turned to a place board and and now doing so small practice sessions at night time and he’s coming back into the board every time, hopefully he will start doing this soon when we are in the field.

    Could you do a video on a dog that pulls on the lead just to get to the next smell please

    Harris is such a beautiful, good natured dog. I love how gentle he’s being handled by Ash and he does seem more playful and eager than the last video.
    The commentary while the dog is being worked is great!

    Another great and timely video. I'm having a similar problem with mine (albeit she is still only young). I've found that working on the final part of the retrieve has helped her to understand what I want. Sometimes I'll throw the ball/dummy up above her head so she catches it and as soon as she has it in her mouth, I take off backwards and reward her for coming in. Has helped a lot.
    As for why she was dropping short? Probably some error on my side, but also of those around me. I was watching my family throwing balls for my dog the other day. She would return to the ball thrower, then around them. They would then let the dog run around in front of them and in some effort to get the ball back for another throw would start telling her to drop it, which she did... now six feet away. I've come to realise that she's been rehearsing this dance for many months now - maybe that's a factor here too?

    Great video Charlie. It was interesting to see how even a Lab can have problems with something that is hard-coded in to their genetics. And a warning to make sure you know what you're doing before you try any 'non-standard' training techniques. He does seem like a very good natured, gentle dog, ideal as a pet for a family.

    Had a situation 20 years ago when I had bull terriers. You needed them to have a real love of balls tennis or any type of ball to get them to work weather running a treadmill or swimming or just simply retrieving balls continually. The best way was to simply kennel the lazy laid back or uninterested dog so he was in full view of other dogs that were enthusiastic about the ball and let the dog just watch they soon get jealous and learn to have a real possessive almost obsession with the ball or frisbee or in this case dummy. Young dogs learn best from being round other good dogs in the same way as wolves do. Jealously is a good motivator.
    Just my thoughts but what do I know 😊

    Charlie, very much enjoying your videos. We're considering a Cocker at some stage and I found your channel quite by accident, and showed it to my wife...only to be told she recognised you, and was in your sister (A's) year at school. A small world. Hi from NZ!

    Question: Great video and Harris is like my dog. Basically I made mistakes when I first got him, because I didn't know any better and trusted my trainer which I went too at that time. We went too fast too soon, he was a star and then it all went side ways and now my dog is like Harris. I do have another trainer now who advised me not to do anything for a few months and then very gradually start building it up from the ground again. What do you think of using the clicker retrieve in a case like this?

    Fantastic video Charlie, thank you. The problems you outlined with Harris are exactly the reasons I won't force my puppy, Tiree, to hold a dummy. This was suggested to my by a lovely older lady friend - I need to MAKE Tiree hold a dummy. (Her son owns & works spaniels, while she has a non working pet Vizsla). I'm not knowedgeable enough with training a gundog so will listen to my gundog trainer re training. That, and watching videos like yours as you, IMO, a very good trainer. My puppy has just turned 8 months old today. She loves to retrieve but does spit her retrieve out at the last minute. I would hate to ruin her now by, as you say, doing too much too soon.

    • @missbabybiker
      @missbabybiker หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just to add, Tiree is a 3/4 Gordon Setter, 1/4 GWP and is still very puppyish. Both of these breeds take longer to mature, both physically and mentally, than say, a Labrador. That's another reason why I won't rush her training.

    CT clearly the dog as beautiful as he is, is not happy retrieving-where is the line between forcing which sounds cruel, and accepting even though his breed for gundog traits, if he isnt happy to do it why force him too?

      This dog is a prime candidate for click and treat training for fetch. Zero pressure, just steak and time.

    • @annoymous30
      @annoymous30 หลายเดือนก่อน

      CT doesn't use treats my point really was ... taking the dogs personality into account, isn't it just a case of having realistic ideals/morals when training? Guidance yes Forcing or worse using e collar to make the dog do something or not do something. I did hear CT say it's up the owner and he did say Harris would make a lovely pet dog, rather than a working dog. What's your view Charlie?
