I'm so glad you called out the dog owner on the horse that has an off lead dog without working recall. It's very frustrating when they are clueless to their own errors. I get really wound up by people that let their dogs walk ahead of them whilst on a lead, to then swoop around the back of me when I walk by to try and get to my heeling dog. I have to now stand to the side or give a wide berth to make it obvious we don't want interactions whilst my dog is on the lead.
Yessss! This is such an issue for us on hikes in Alaska. Sadly, trails in the woods are too small to give much space, so we have to be extra diligent to block uncontrolled dogs from reaching ours, and it's really difficult. And then the owners are so offended when we block their dog off....🫠 I'm ready to start yelling "leash your dog!" to each of them at this rate.
@@Tuco333 I'm confused by your comment... whether you're being sarcastic or serious. The trails I'm referring to have leash laws and are heavily populated by tourists and locals, so I leash my dog and expect everyone else to leash as well so that they don't bother others on the trail. However, when I'm walking on roads and trails that are quiet, I always let my dog roam off-leash, but that's only because he's e-collar trained and has a reliable recall. As soon as a person, animal, or ATV shows up, I call him over and keep him with me until we pass. My gripe is with the careless owners who let their dogs wander off leash with no recall and when on tight trails that have leash laws. I don't appreciate my dog getting harassed by other dogs when he's heeling on leash and behaving himself.
Sumed up what type of person you are pretty quickly, then lost me reading at "he's E-collar trained" luckily it's banned here in the UK. This dog trainer is an absolute pleb. Him training a labrador in the video is evidence to him being a pleb, who's next his training, a guard dog type likely, another dog with natural tendencies that are easy to teach. Yet acts great about it and puts other happy dogs down that merely come close to him. Whilst out on a dog walk. Lol @alaskanaussiefurguson
This is the best video on this channel for a while. I can appreciate the highly edited almost theoretical lessons, but nothing beats actually seeing real world examples of dog training. It's such a small thing, but seeing how Will handled the interaction between the off leash dog and Sully has put my mind at ease so much with how I handle that same scenario with my dog. By me there are a lot of narrow paths and owners who think their dog is trained if they come back to them after calling their name 10-20 times and they've already had an up close and personal sniff for 2-3 minutes. It's made loose leash training my dog and dealing with his own playful-reactivity to dogs much more difficult, because I never quite knew if I was handling the situation right. I still might have that problem now, but at least I know that I'm doing the right thing and to just stay the course. This is the kind of information that TH-cam trainers never even know to cover because it has little to do with the formal lessons of loose leash training, but is a scenario that happens all the time in the real world. Another bit of information that was really useful was the information about how to deal with aggressive dogs in that situation as unfortunately a lot of these off leash dogs get aggressive when they realise just how big my dog is and the fact that he's still intact. As it happens my natural instincts were to get between my dog and the aggressive dog and give it a kick to shoo it away, so it's great to get some confirmation that I was doing the right thing for my dog in this situation as well. You really can't beat the chaos of real life situations, and I'd love to see more videos like this in the future.
I agree this is a great video and I would love to see more like it! I’ve watched a lot on this channel, and gotten great advise. This was a great reminder to keep working on all the little things that the dogs soon figure out they can get away with when I’m not keeping up with training. Like threshold manners. I find this helpful and the fact you show and explain what and why you are doing it. Means that people like myself can try to do better with our own dogs.
Well I am a bad dog owner. I never wanted a dog, and I have one. Why do I have one? My Daughter gifted me a dog. I told her no and told her to take the dog back. The Dog came from an abusive place and my Daughter brought the dog back again crying saying "Please Dad, take the Dog, You don't want to know where she was and how cruel the family was". My Daughter has Grandparents that live in Baja California. Her Grandparents live near a farm where Dobermans were bred on site to be used as guard dogs. The dogs were kept very hungry to basically go after people. My Daughter happened to come across this farm that it is near her Grandparents house. A lone female Doberman came to her whimpering as the owner was smacking it with a broom. My Daughter saw the abuse, the dog getting kicked and hit, and my Daughter pleaded with the owner if she can have the dog. He said No as he kicked the dog again, My Daughter pulled out $100 that was all the money she had in her purse and told the man take it, take it and I will take the dog....The man took the money, my Daughter lifted the wires from the fence and grabbed the dog. Not knowing who would take the dog, and the fact my Ex Wife and my Daughter already had 5 dogs, she remembered that I always wanted a Doberman Pinscher. So she calls me saying she has a surprise for me and next thing I know there is a 3 month old female doberman on my door step. Not knowing the story I said HELL NO and said take it back and I shut the door. I didn't;'t want a dog. Yes, I admire the Doberman breed from afar, but would never want to own a dog. Too much work, too much responsibility, not to mention Doberman's are on the banned list in California. So my Daughter left. She took the dog to her Mom's house and there was an issue there as well. My Ex Wife basically told my Daughter they have too many dogs already and are in violation of the City Ordinance. Technically, your only supposed to have 2 dogs and they had 5, so yeah, haha. So a few hours past and I felt guilty. I felt bad that my Daughter had this idea and I basically slammed the door in her face. So I called her back and said bring the dog back. That was 15 months ago. In that 15 months I tried taking Ruby (The Doberman) to obedience training. DId that for 8 weeks with not much success. Ruby was so traumatized from where she came from. Again, didn't know the whole story at that time. So I gave up on the training since it was costing me a lot of money. I just couldn't afford to keep doing it. My Wife came across this TH-cam channel and we tried to do some of the things that were recommended. We have had some success but I still struggle. I struggle because deep down, I didn't want a dog, so the enthusiasm just isn't' there. Ruby is now part of the family. Though I am not a "Dog Person" I did take the responsibility of having Ruby. I know I am not a good Dog Owner, but I feed her the best food I can afford, I play with her the best I can (till she begins biting me) and I do the best I can, and give her as much love as I know how. After my Daughter who recently told me the story of Ruby, the WHOLE story, I now realize every time I took out the Broom to sweep the kitchen floor why Ruby would get skittish and go run away and hide. After what I just discussed, you know why too. How anyone could abuse an animal in the way my Daughter saw is beyond me. So I promise to give Ruby the best that I can. I am not a good dog owner because I am keeping Ruby from being her full potential. I am the one not putting in that little "extra" and I already stated why that is. Anyway, just wanted to share my story. Thank You for your time in reading it. God Bless.
You're a good man. You're not meant to be a dog owner but you did what you did cause Ruby deserved a better life. And that's to admire. Me myself, have a golden retriever and a great pyrenees. Very easy to train, especially the golden, so it hasn't been hard for me. I love them both. Now, If I had a doberman, or any other complicated breed, I wouldn't be a good dog owner. Not the kind of person to train difficult breeds.
@@KyotoLoungeRoom Thank You for your kind words. Appreciate it. I'm just trying to do the best I can. Trying to do what's right for the dog within my capabilities, not only emotionally but financially. I am not a "dog" person, but I love animals and respect them. Again, Thank You for your comment, its much appreciated. 🙏
I'm in a similar situation so I 100% understand you. It feels terrible to know I could never provide all my dog needs to be truly happy. I know someone else might me more deserving of him but at the same time am scared he might end up in the wrong hands. So I do the best I can and hope it's enough.
God bless you. You definitely saved this dog's life. But I get it. Dogs are complicated. They take a lot of energy. But I believe in you. Do what you feel is right for YOU. You & your family come first, our animals second. If you really feel this journey is not for you, I am sure you will get insight & ideas on solutions. It is your decision, ultimately. May God guide you and continue to illuminate your decisions, no matter what they may be. Respectfully, AL
Thanks for the upload Will. I’m in the US and watch your channel for training information haven’t been a dog owner since I was a child and want to make sure I have a good steppingstone before I go out and find my new life long companion. So thanks for the upload and please keep them coming.
Really love watching your videos, I've used alot of your tips with my 2 year old lab, I get downhearted when she seems to go backwards, but watching this has helped me so much, thank you
Will you smashed it out of the park with this one. It's great to see that your leg is so much better now and you can get back to the walk. That must have been so hard, it would kill me if I couldn't go and train with my dog Blue. Using affection for reinforcement is an absolute game changer, when the dog likes it, Blue doesn't want to be touched often. She is boardline autistic and in order to give her affection it actually has to be extremely hard or she hates it. But with clients dogs I will go for affection over food if I can, it seems to land so much better for the dog.
What a great story, you are an AMAZING dog trainer. Don't put yourself down to much, you had an accident. Just remember, life happens, but now you're back on track.
this is one of your best vids, thank you so much. Shows more of the avarage life of a dog owner, easy to show parents and whats needed from them aswell if they want a loveying dog like Suly
What you said at 22:30 is what I'm having to do but in reverse. I am looking after my brother's dog in September for ten days (1 year old french bulldog), and i have to train him when he comes to my home. He at first thinks he can jump up on furniture, or lay around on what ever he wants, or pull on the lead when on walks (i get given his harness and an extendable, so i clip a collar and a proper lead on him instead as i own many😁 i hate extendable leads). Luckily and surprisingly, he is a smart dog, and training him doesn't take long. By the end of his stay with me (by no means perfect) , he is calmer, more confident when meating people and other dogs, and a lot nicer to be around and walk than when he first arrived.
Every time I watch your videos I am reminded how critical consistency is for training animals. I used to train horses, I've trained dogs, but that was years ago. Now in my retirement I have two young dongs, a labradoodle and a black lab, I find myself lacking in consistency needed to get them where I want them to be when the unexpected happens. Watching you run through the exercises is motivating. thanks
Will, it happens. I used to train several times. Day my dog was unnoticed in shops, he made people go get themself a puppy, he listened to all day every day, very content. I then was bed ridden with a previous neck and head injury that had started to spiral, same thing. But mine I couldn't train hardly at all. He became anxious, lost his natural obedience, etc. and then another hit to my head. It began initially 1.5+ years ago. We're just off leash again now in the yard. But I find it's somewhat (embarassing sometimes) neat to have the experience as a trainer too. I can show how flawed training could be.
I can’t stand when people just let their dogs run wherever they want without any recall. My boerboel hates dogs jumping in her face and all people seem to shout is ‘don’t worry she’s friendly’. My reply is always ‘I won’t but the mastiffs not’!!
This I have a Neo and everyone thinks because their dog is friendly it's OK for their dog to run up to mine or their kids. My dog is OK with kids he just doesn't like then all touching him at once
the realities of life .. tune up drills work .. is a daily work in progress when working with other dogs sometimes we just want to love on our dogs and chill.. but as trainers our dogs need our time or more of our time.. lessons learned lesson shared thank you
Thanks Will for this , I am on wk 8 of recovery from a broken femur and have a 14 mth old gsd. His training has gone back wards obvs as I am on crutches and he is being walked by others. I’ve been re visiting basics, in the garden and hse as he’s been a bit rusty with impulse control when visitors come. Working hard with his place. I can’t wait to be able to walk him with him to regain his manners. If you have any other tips for me I would appreciate. Ps Rua also came from Pantheon kennels 😊
Can you make a video about working from home with a new puppy? Should you crate train in your office? away from the office? Do you bond with them but also don’t want to create anxious puppy when we leave!!
Love your channel. One reason I love it because of your honesty. Which is why I didn't like the title of this video. Maybe that's just me, but I read it as clickbaity. (To me, a confession is about something where I feel like I messed up; whereas in your case, it sounds like not being able to train your dogs was simply a result of your accident, something beyond your control. Unless you feel like you could have avoided the accident.) Having said that, I am glad you shared what happened to you. You definitely had a lot on your plate.
My dog is reactive to dogs, and we're working really hard on it - but people that let their dogs run around off lead, bouncing up to a dog on lead when they can't recall them is nightmare for us, which 'he's friendly!' doesn't excuse. Asking people to put their dogs on a leash can occasionally elicit a stream of abuse from them! Great video. Thanks.
What's wrong with "loose leash walking"? If need to my GSD will come to heel when told. But a walk is for sniffing the ground scents etc. She can do this on my right or left, that also works to place me between other people/dogs on narrow paths. She has hip dysplaysia and sitting is painful, so sometimes she cant get her but on the ground. But she goes off lead among unfenced sheep, rabbits deer and hares. 100% recall so far. She is 6years old I'm 73.
You are a good trainer. To help others. Not be fancy as some famous dogs trainers here in TH-cam who give shows like they are in a circus and taming a lion. You give owners or owners to be, a good advice. Not an advice like, one size fits all. But also how to raise different breeds, with breeds fits an owners life. You explain a lot why you do something, and you tell what a dog will do if don’t do it. How you must train. You don’t be a show off to grab somebody’s dog and show what you can. Guidance and direction are the key Words and the behavoir of a good owner. Your training is natural, like a dog should be engage with their owner. ❤
Shit happens and u keep pushing through......ur not a bad trainer ur dealing with the opsticals of life.....iam getting a old english bulldog I'm the next 2 months I've been doing alot of research on raw diet to u recommend and if so do u have any videos or advice for me....thank u much love from here in sh*tshow America lol
Watching this is so amazing, the thing is it’s immediate, I mean if Will tells us I what my dog to do this he can’t really pretend the dog did it if he didn’t as we can see it and you can’t edit it to look ok , so you can see exactly how the dog is being trained and that what he says and does is really what he believes and what he uses himself . He 💯 knows his stuff, just listen in to him you can tell that but again like I said you can actually see it happen . Also sully is just a beautiful beautiful boy 😊
I find it so fascinating of how well your dogs (and other dogs you train) behave and react to what you do with them. they do it so... perfectly!. It's almost as if they're all under some kind of spell, lol!
How do you keep the lead on the dog's neck from falling down so often? I've got a min pin and I usually can get about 10 minutes into a walk and then it slides down and I begin to lose control of him, and need to readjust it, but when it's on correctly it works wonders.
What I have noticed over 30 years of owning Rottweilers is there has been a move way from training classes aimed at producing obedient dogs to classes aimed at producing obedience dogs. There has been a reduction in excercises aimed at developing socialisation, confidence and trust in the handler with the focus switching more to precision. When the off lead dog ran up to your dog the oucome was good because your dog was well socialised and was confident because it trusted you to keep it safe. Your obedience control certainly helps you to manage the sitation but for those less skilled the critical thing is that if their control fails their dog remains safe.
Those entitled arseholes on the horses thinking it's acceptable for their loose dog to run up to another like that really infuriates me. I stop dogs like that in their tracks, whatever it takes. i don't care how friendly they are, they do not get to run up to my dog uninvited, period. Shame on them
Hi from Malaysia, good to see you have recovered and back on feet. My 3 year old lab sniffs most of the time on walks. Having a tough time getting her to walk by my side, she doesn't pull that much, kind of drifts off to sniff. What can I do ? Cheers.
I LOVE that you said you'd give an aggressive dog 'the boot' if it came near your dog. My dog has a back issue. So any twisting or jumping is not good so he's always on leash. Why walking in the woods one day an off leash GSD once came up to him sniffing and circling. I'm yelling for the owner to call their dog, but of course the dog didn't listen. My dog stayed quiet but I felt things building so I wailed the dog on the head with my long line, twice, telling it to 'leave it'. He backed away and when the owner finally got to us I gave her a piece of my mind. Interestingly though, once the woman had ahold of her dog, only then did it start to bark, lunge and growl. .
When you come to terms with the fact that an "out of tune" Sully is better than your GSD will ever be, on her best day ;). EVERY dog would be a better dog if they had a little bit of Sully in them.
I used to use my local skate park for working together in new ways with my dog, usually during the night, and then they placed a sign that dogs aren't allowed. Well, we still have rock climbing.
Mate, if you feel you are a bad trainer and owner, I shouldn't be anywhere near a dog. But I got my first dog almost by accident and it's a collie. I had no Idea how to take care of my dog, but with your help I habe become at least better.
What slipcollar do you use? I have a Dalmatian and the sliplead always slips down his neck. I’ve reverted to a bungee lead for because I don’t want to choke him or damage his trachea. I don’t want to tighten the sliplead around his jaw because I don’t want to choke him

I'd actively try to find a suitable person to adopt Ruby. Preferably a woman because she was abused by a man.
Respectfully,
AL
Thanks for the upload Will. I’m in the US and watch your channel for training information haven’t been a dog owner since I was a child and want to make sure I have a good steppingstone before I go out and find my new life long companion. So thanks for the upload and please keep them coming.
Fantastic! This is the motivation we all need to reset, refresh and get back to basics!
Really love watching your videos, I've used alot of your tips with my 2 year old lab, I get downhearted when she seems to go backwards, but watching this has helped me so much, thank you
Tes please more videos like this, this is how we learn from you
Will you smashed it out of the park with this one.
A - Glad you're back on hoppin' around again.
B - Thanks for reminding me to get back on my game with my dog...I, not he, has slipped. Cheers!
What a great story, you are an AMAZING dog trainer. Don't put yourself down to much, you had an accident. Just remember, life happens, but now you're back on track.
Excellent real help, fantastic thank you
this is one of your best vids, thank you so much.
By the end of his stay with me (by no means perfect) , he is calmer, more confident when meating people and other dogs, and a lot nicer to be around and walk than when he first arrived.
great lesson.
a real pro in action.
Really helpful! Thanks for this video!
Fantastic video. Thank you for sharing. Yes I always enjoy your longer videos.
Watching you run through the exercises is motivating. thanks
I like the music in the background! Did i just recognize it the first time or is this new?
Great Video ❤
Greetings from Germany
Will, it happens. I used to train several times. Day my dog was unnoticed in shops, he made people go get themself a puppy, he listened to all day every day, very content.
I then was bed ridden with a previous neck and head injury that had started to spiral, same thing. But mine I couldn't train hardly at all. He became anxious, lost his natural obedience, etc. and then another hit to my head. It began initially 1.5+ years ago. We're just off leash again now in the yard. But I find it's somewhat (embarassing sometimes) neat to have the experience as a trainer too. I can show how flawed training could be.
Great real life training. Enjoyed this video. Great reminder for tune up drills
100% recall should be trained, but why isn’t your dog trained to be friendly as well? or is that too hard to train?
You are amazing mate, I love watching your work
I would love to see more like this, so helpful!
Lampshaded. Damn that sucks. Mine are holding on by a thread. Wish you the best on a long frustrating recovery.
Love it. Would love to see more like this
Welcome back and such a great, reaslitic video to see.
Excellent video!
Glad you’re on the mend.😊
7:08 I go to the skatepark a lot, but he's in a downstay watching me skateboard haha. There's enough obstacles on the walks i do.
You are amazing. Thank you for your videos.
Will, you and Sully are simply awesome. Love ya from the bottom of my heart, mate. Thanks for everything you do.
I really liked this video. I would love more like it!
the realities of life .. tune up drills work .. is a daily work in progress when working with other dogs sometimes we just want to love on our dogs and chill.. but as trainers our dogs need our time or more of our time.. lessons learned lesson shared thank you
Thanks so much for sharing!
Ps Rua also came from
Pantheon kennels 😊
this video is so good i learned 8+ new things 😁 thanks
Can you make a video about working from home with a new puppy? Should you crate train in your office? away from the office? Do you bond with them but also don’t want to create anxious puppy when we leave!!
Love your channel.
One reason I love it because of your honesty.
Which is why I didn't like the title of this video.
Maybe that's just me, but I read it as clickbaity.
(To me, a confession is about something where I feel like I messed up; whereas in your case, it sounds like not being able to train your dogs was simply a result of your accident, something beyond your control. Unless you feel like you could have avoided the accident.)
Having said that, I am glad you shared what happened to you. You definitely had a lot on your plate.
Really enjoyed this video.
Dude you did a great job 👏 training my sister she no longer poops 💩 on the floor or run 🏃♀️ across the street into traffic thanks ☺️
Great video thanks Will, glad you're back. Sully is too delicious for words 😍
Thanks.
Silly’s face when the other guy throws it , he’s like are you sure you don’t want me to go for that dad? But he waits for dad to say go.
Welcome back!
What lead setup is it that you are using? Looks neat.
He is a very sweet and well trained dog
Shit happens and u keep pushing through......ur not a bad trainer ur dealing with the opsticals of life.....iam getting a old english bulldog I'm the next 2 months I've been doing alot of research on raw diet to u recommend and if so do u have any videos or advice for me....thank u much love from here in sh*tshow America lol
You amazing 🤩 yes we are humans. I know I didn’t walked my dogs for 2 days. Now that is bad for me so now it’s time to fix finally cooler weather
Very interesting and informative
Sully is the goodest boy
What I have noticed over 30 years of owning Rottweilers is there has been a move way from training classes aimed at producing obedient dogs to classes aimed at producing obedience dogs. There has been a reduction in excercises aimed at developing socialisation, confidence and trust in the handler with the focus switching more to precision. When the off lead dog ran up to your dog the oucome was good because your dog was well socialised and was confident because it trusted you to keep it safe. Your obedience control certainly helps you to manage the sitation but for those less skilled the critical thing is that if their control fails their dog remains safe.
Are y’all getting harnesses back?
Ima comment on every video and every post yall make till I get an answer lol
Those entitled arseholes on the horses thinking it's acceptable for their loose dog to run up to another like that really infuriates me. I stop dogs like that in their tracks, whatever it takes. i don't care how friendly they are, they do not get to run up to my dog uninvited, period. Shame on them
Hi from Malaysia, good to see you have recovered and back on feet. My 3 year old lab sniffs most of the time on walks. Having a tough time getting her to walk by my side, she doesn't pull that much, kind of drifts off to sniff. What can I do ? Cheers.
God bless!
Real life. No fluff. ❤
Where can we get a slip lead like that?
I used to use my local skate park for working together in new ways with my dog, usually during the night, and then they placed a sign that dogs aren't allowed. Well, we still have rock climbing.
Mate, if you feel you are a bad trainer and owner, I shouldn't be anywhere near a dog. But I got my first dog almost by accident and it's a collie. I had no Idea how to take care of my dog, but with your help I habe become at least better.
Fair play 😉
@Will what leash are you using? Is it a shocker?
What slipcollar do you use? I have a Dalmatian and the sliplead always slips down his neck. I’ve reverted to a bungee lead for because I don’t want to choke him or damage his trachea. I don’t want to tighten the sliplead around his jaw because I don’t want to choke him
07:13 I got this far then gave up. Please reconsider dialling down or removing the distracting muzak.
