    It took me a while to be able to use a red dot quickly. A friend of mine said "Stop focusing on the dot like it's your front sight. Focus on the target." Which is of course the opposite of what you're taught with irons. It all fell into place after that.

    I began putting red dots on my pistols over 10 years ago. The first was with just a CO2 pellet gun but the ability to hit pop cans at 50yds made me a believer. I started putting red dots on all my pistols, selling the ones that were not milled and buying only new ones that were optics ready. I have several auto-adjust microdots similar to the MeCanik. They do a fine job in most lighting conditions but fail when shooting from a very dimly lighted area into a well lighted area where the dot is too dim to be usable. I recently tried the Holson 507K and 407K models and was pleased to discover that a brightness suitable for full sun also is usable in dim light. This is especially true of the 507K with the smaller dot. This means a single setting that is useable in all lighting situations for defensive use including shooting from dark areas into brightly lighted areas. Unfortunately, the Holosuns have a unique footprint that cannot be used on Springfield Hellcats without modifying the slide or using a plate.

    • @GBGuns
      @GBGuns  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, a downfall of auto-adjusters is when the dot is in one lighting condition and your target is in another lighting condition.

    I have the Rival Darkside with M01 optic and it's a tack driver. The optic is flawless so far and the accuracy is fantastic. My first Canik (TP9SFX) came with the Vortex Venom, and that is a decent optic, but I had to send it back for replacement after less than 6 months and probably less than 500 rounds. It was a bit disappointing to say the least. Fortunately, Vortex has a lifetime guarantee and they replaced it no questions asked. Get the Canik and you will not be disappointed!!!

    best red dot "in my personal opinion" is the Holosun 507c--GN-X2, Only because of the 32MOA outer circle that'll shows you when your off target and what direction you need to go, PERFECT for getting use to your first red dot. BIGGEST draw back is it's $350 price tag, esp for new ted dot owners

    Sig Romeo that came on an RX320 was my worst experience. Would not stop flickering. My Holosuns have been great and for some reason look the most “crisp” to my eye. Red dots are SUPER subjective IMO and people just need to find what suits them best.

  • @jamesR1990

    Looks great.
    I've had good experiences with the Vortex Venom.
    Mixed with the Swamp fox Sentinel and Burris fast fire 3.
    And poor with the Holosun 507k and Sig Romeo Zero.
    If you want any input or perspective on Red dots in a desert climate I'd be happy to help. I know we've discussed a little through the comments section on some issues I've come across before

    • @GBGuns

      I just had a Romeo Zero die (I believe battery). It's one of the reasons I'm not big on dots, but I don't deny how much easier they make shooting.

      @@GBGuns would you consider a video or article etc on the brightest red dots? That would be very useful.
      I reached out to the various brands but was told they couldn't give me any information on the LED output levels etc. I don't personally have the budget to buy a lot of brands and measure their output or just visually compare. But most wash out here due to the sun

    • @GBGuns
      @GBGuns  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jamesR1990 it's hard to judge because it's relative. Ambient light and your eye are more important than any rating. Being in Oregon they're almost always plenty bright if not too bright, in Arizona it might be different, plus there's persona preference. Brighter is easier to spot but might obscure small targets (good for defense) dimmer is harder to spot but better for making tight groups.

    i have been curious about the canik red dots. i personally like the auto brightness adjusting red dots. in my experience, it is always at the right brightness to see the dot in almost all conditions, without having to adjust it manually.

    • @robertroth4505
      @robertroth4505 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I too have favored auto-adjust dots until recently. I have a Swampfox Sentinel, Riton MRPD2 and Crimson Trace MRad Pro microdots. They all do a wonderful job in in almost all lighting conditions but fail badly when shooting from a location with very dim light into a well lighted area. The dot is too dim to pick up and that's when you need back up irons. Manufacturers would do better to adjust their brightness curves to provide a brighter dot in low light conditions. Having discovered that issue I gave the Holosuns 507/407K series a try. I was surprised to find a brightness setting that worked well in full sun but was still serviceable in very dim light. Not optimal but comfortablely serviceable. For defensive use the dot needs to be ready to go 24/7 in any lighting without the need to turn on or make any adjustments. The Holosuns do that.

    I have the same setup I'm surprised that more people don't buy this micro Red Dot there is a great review by the honest Marksman on this same micro Dot and where he has compared it to the hollow sons the 407 and the 507 and claims that this microdot self-adjusting light works better than the hollow sounds and who can complain about a 6-year battery life that's why I bought this particular one since it was made by the same company as the gun.

The thin metal plate in the plastic bag that is next to the sight cover on your table, is that used or not? Did you use Loctite on the screws? This will be my first firearm with a red dot sight, so I have no prior experience with the install.

    Hi there! Just recently bought a mecanik 2 MOA red dot sight. Haven't taken it to the range yet but my biggest gripe about this dot is that the windage and elevation adjustments have no tactile click, so you can't use math and known MOA clicks to adjust to get your dot sighted in. You have to just twist some and say "hum, that seems about right . Need some advise on that please

    • @GBGuns
      @GBGuns  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is true, and were it meant for a rifle or 100 yards it would be really annoying, fortunately it's just a pistol dot so you're likely zeroing somewhere between 7-15 yards. It's easy, just turn it until it's where you want it. To save time I usually get it just above the front sight before hitting the range, then it's just minor adjustments once you live fire.

    • @haroonhayat4477
      @haroonhayat4477 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GBGuns thanks Graham. I'll follow your advice and send my feedback once I hit the range.

    • @GBGuns
      @GBGuns  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clicks are nice, and a must on a scope, especially for those who dial for distance (versus reticle hold), but on a red dot that will be zero'd once and left I don't think they're really necessary.

    • @haroonhayat4477
      @haroonhayat4477 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@GBGuns that almost solves my curiousity. The red dot is in the center of the sight when I unboxed it. You've asked me to go low and place it just above the front sight before the live fire session to save time and ammo at the range. Can you be a bit more specific on that as I'm a bit confused

    • @GBGuns
      @GBGuns  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Centered in the window doesn't mean it'll be in line with the gun. Centering the dot just above the front sight (when looking through the irons) will save you time, like bore-sightibg a scope. Another method is to use one of those laser rounds if you have one. When you hit the range start close (like 5 yards) and work your way back to where you want to be

    Hi!
    Thanks for this detailed review on mecanik MO1 micro red dot site.
    After watching your review i bought this MO1 the very next day for my TP9 Sub Elite Executive.
    I have zeroed the dot at 15 yards as well the same day around 4:00 pm when the sun was still bright.
    To see its functionality in low light, I checked it on my garden and surprisingly the dot didn't appeared.... But when I moved the red dot right underneath the light, it popped on the sight glass. Its auto brightness function is working as the dot intensity changes (from bright to dim) as I moved away from the light.
    Could you please shed some light on this issue?
    I mean is it normal for auto brightness adjusting red dots or is there a fault in my red dot sight?

    • @GBGuns
      @GBGuns  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a drawback of auto-adjust dots, for some the "bright" can be too bright or "dim" too dim.

    I would never buy this optic for several reasons. The location of the battery compartment on the bottom means you have to remove the optic to change the battery and then reinstall it and most likely re-zero it as well. The open battery compartment on the bottom also means the internals of the optic are susceptible to the elements. I don't like the auto-brightness feature at all. The brightness that the optic selects may not be the brightness that I want based on my eyesight. The problem is that there is no option for the user to adjust the brightness, you have to use the brightness level the optic selects. On a minor note, there are no MOA markings for the adjustment screws so when you make an adjustment you have no idea how much of an adjustment you're making until you fire a few test shots. Canik seems to be turning out some really good guns but I think this optic misses the mark. If I'm going to spend a lot of money to get a quality gun I think I would prefer to spend a few more dollars and get a quality red dot to go with it.

      Do you really calculate MOA for when you're adjusting a pistol sight?

       @GBGuns I don't sit down and calculate it but it's nice to have the markings available. If I make an adjustment of four clicks and the point of impact moves in whatever direction one inch and I need to move the point of impact one more inch I know I need to adjust four more clicks. I think this works better than just arbitrarily turning a screw an unspecified amount over and over again to get the result I want.

    I suspect you will continue to be jaded. In my experience ether Trijicon or Holosun are the only ones worth using.

      The mounting plate came with the pistol. I didn't show mounting because TH-cam forbids that.

      @@GBGuns ok thanks did the mounting plate fit ? Mine to big. Optic did fit. Yes using the one that came with it. And thanks for replying. Any suggestions? Trim plastic plate or try to get it on ? So what I'm asking is did you have any problems? Or what I'm asking is plate is bigger than optic

      You may have the wrong plate this this optic. Are you using the plates that came with your gun? I forget the specific footprint of this optic, I just play mix and match until I find the plate it fits. I had no issues installing mine.

      Using plate that came with optic. Plate fits optic but not on space on mc9. Thanks for responding. Something canik has not done.

      I haven't tried mountaing anything to the MC9 (I don't trust optics enough for carry use), does the M01 not fit without the plate?
