    Quintessentially 1960s. English folk has a vibe all of its own. Love it.

    This song immediately transports me to early seventies suburban Manchester, with my parents and siblings all alive and harty, with me observing them from afar while sat at the dinner table. Id love to go back in time.

      It was 17 November 1969 when the TV show Take Three Girls was first shown and I believe the song was released at the same time. This song has stuck in my head ever since and I was only 8 at the time. I remember wanting to be like the original Three Girls - Liza Goddard, Susan Jameson and Angela Down - and live in a flat in London! The thing was though in my innocent, childish mind the swinging 60s, along with the great music, were never going to end - now wouldn't that be something! 🤩

      I know what you mean, many memories of TV Series and music are connected to family and friends who sadly are no longer with us and we'd love to go back in time to live those moments, that we didn't realise would become so precious with time, again.

    Jacqui McShee is the anti-diva. Just sing the melody and lyrics beautifully and don't worry about stealing the show. Refreshing.

      When she sings she is beautiful, and so calm, and when she opens her mouth you have just to listen.
      I've almost never seen a band like them, such an understanding of music and the personalities that bring it to life, these five musicians were amazing, really.

    As a note, the song isn't simply in 5/4 as a few folks here have noted, comparing it to "Take Five". The song shifts between three distinctive time signatures, 5/4, 7/8 and 6/4 time. This, I think is what gives the song it's beguiling quality. It's hard to keep up with what is going on. It took me an age to get my head round it while learning to play it from the l.p. but once you get it, it makes sense. It all seems to hang on Jacqui's vocals. I think she wrote the song after hearing Bert and John playing around with a guitar riff.

      I know exactly what you mean by saying she doesn't have to do anything super impressive - like the reality TV show or social media "singers" who all try to sound like Mariah or Whitney or Leona or whoever they like to copy these days - I haven't a clue because I don't pay attention to it, I only listen to the "golden oldies" like this and they truly do sound golden to my ears! The 60s was the best decade by far!

    And this is just true natural talent as well.

    Farkle Berry, if you're still around (or anyone else who happens to know, for that matter). Can you tell us what year the video recording was made? I'd guess late 60's early 70's? Also to those mentioning Brubeck's Take Five and 5/4 time, this song is actually a strange mix of 5/4 and 6/4. Some verses purely 6/4 others definitely 5/4. Really cool to see them playing live!

    • @Snardbafulator
      @Snardbafulator ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually, you could reduce the entire tune to 6/4. The 5/4 + 7/4 of the main theme adds to 12 and you can cut that in half. The middle section is in straight 6/4.

    It's odd, this is without doubt an astounding tune. But all these comments regarding how this was when music was at it's best etc. This was an era when the Brits were so buttoned up, second only perhaps to the Japanese. Folk performed seated, pondered on by an audience also seated. Desperately trying to contain their emotional reaction for god knows what reason.The thing that really makes this so white hot is it's jazz aspect, levering itself perfectly into the rigid librarian knitted introversion. Like some kind of musical insistant puppy.Thank god that things have changed, but for one second this happened and it was good.

      @Snardbafulator ปีที่แล้ว

      Gahh, it's not in 5/4. The main them is in 5/4 + 7/4 and the middle section is in 6/4. That first bar of 5/4 has a similar subdivision to both Take Five and Living In The Past, but those tunes are in 5/4 only.

    • @beverleyr2625
      @beverleyr2625 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@racketman2uYes, I absolutely love Living In The Past and this gives you that same feeling of late 60s early 70s nostalgia that Living In The Past does! There were a lot of TV shows around back then with theme tunes which just had that "something" to make you remember them 50 or 60 years later. Does anyone remember the BBC1 show The Family, which came on during the early to mid 70s? That also had a theme tune I remember and I think it was instrumental apart from a woman humming the tune. It's strange how these tunes stay with us for so long!

      @@beverleyr2625
      "They'd never sell their music on their singing alone would they?!!!"
      Indeed not. Hence the need for all those over-produced music videos! I have a thing called the 'Pub Test'. If an artist could perform successfully in an English pub, with _minimal_ instrumentation and NO electronic enhancement (beyond a simple mike), then he or she is a REAL artist. Otherwise...🙄
      Frankly, I don't understand how so many folk can put up with so much of the CRAP around these days! When I was a youngster, my friends and I went to a gig to LISTEN to the music, played by musicians. Today, youngsters (many of them) go to SEE a CELEBRITY, regardless of any musicality (or anything above mediocre talent). Most depressing!
