Terry Cox alternating between the metalophone and drums, John Renbourn and Bert Jansch in magnificent interplay between electric and acoustic folk guitars, Danny Thompson in his melodic fluidity while keeping everything together and... ethereal Jacqui McShee and earthy Jansch's voices... such a magical song, with amazing arrangement in its composition and storytelling. This is a very pivotal Pentangle's moment. Truly remarkable.

Melding of superbly coordinated but somehow detached musical talents with a beautifully lyrical, other-worldly song, it encapsulates so much of what made Pentangle great, just lovely, Queen Zelda can you imagine…..

I adored Pentangle as a teenager but hadn't listened to them for a long time. A few days ago, went to the utterly amazing Highgate cemetery in London, and there was Bert and Loren Jansch's grave. All the memories flooded back and I've been listening again. Just as wonderful as I remember ♡

I take great comfort in the fact that there's a wealth of live Pentangle footage on TH-cam.
I’ll go for weeks without listening to Pentangle then something turns up on my timeline and I go on a ‘Pentanglathon’ for days. Only saw them once, in Manchester, autumn 1969. Big regret I never saw them again.

And I'm in the desert town of Southern California watching the fluffy gray and white clouds drifting and gathering in the distant mountains framed by the powder blue sky.and palm trees dancing in the cool spring breeze. This has stimulated my poetic side.

That vocal counterpoint close to the end was unexpected and delightful.
Could be coincidence, but the above theme is very similar to ''We be Soldiers Three' - a three-mens' song by Thomas Ravenscroft publ. in 1609. Pentangle created a most brilliant blend of styles which was unique at that era.

@@baroqueman1 There may well be a connection. I seem to remember that the canon in "Hunting Song" is a late medieval/early renaissance round so exactly the kind of music Ravenscroft included in Deuteromelia. It's not the same tune of course but similar enough they may have the same root.
(For those not familiar with Deuteromelia, it's the second of three early 17th C. collections of popular songs, mainly catches and rounds. Today we would probably call them "folk songs" but that concept didn't really exist back then. The collections were published anonymously but it has never been a secret that it was Thomas Ravenscroft who compiled and published them.

That is a pretty well-known round. I think the second one I ever learned, with the first being "Row, Row, Row Your Boat."
No, that is no coincidence. Very nice reuse as a bridge, though.
It is also a french lullaby named "Vent frais, vent du matin" which is this same canon.

This is unbelievable. Every performance of Pentangle on TH-cam is top notch...but this has clambered to a sun-kissed peak I never even knew existed. All of the band are so on song, absolutely soaring. And, Jacqui...oh, my. And kudos to the absolutely fabulous camera-work and overall production - THIS is how to capture a live band. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Omg, 5:59 is magical and a wonderful surprise. It's one of those moments in a song when it grabs you and stops you dead in your tracks from whatever you were doing and reminds you of why you love this song! Brings chills to me.....

There was some LSD circulating in 1969 called pentangle. We did it a few times when we could get it. This music always reminds me of those nights of purple-blue electric patterns moving about the walls.
Never heard of 'em! But boy was I blown away. I'm being whisked from an overcrowded smelly train to go hunting in a an evergreen forest drinking in clean clear air. shhhh! There is a deer ahead........

Back in the 60s I learned guitar by listening to Bert’s records (and John Fahey’s) and I still worship the man. This shows why. As the jazz great John Abercrombie said, good music respects tradition and pushes it forward. That’s why it never sounds dated.

It's what Blackmore's Night would sound like if Ritchie Blackmore were a beatnik instead of a metalhead.
Im guessing blackmore was influenced by them, led zeppelin definitely were, so deep purple probably also were at least indirectly

Read a lot of comments about the sound of D Thompson's double bass, it sounds incredibly, it hums, it creaks, I wish I had one like that.
I thought this was a traditional tune, some child ballad or satirical tune or similar. But it seems to be written by the band. Who is Queen Azelda?
