Good review. This hits me so hard in the nostalgia. I had this game as a kid and played it like 13 times. I was that obsessed with it. I really liked the combat, art style and music. It's still one of my favorite game soundtracks to this very day.
Just the fact that the main hub of the game is a cool shopping mall-esque city within a FLYING WHALE is one of the many things this game offers that still keep it in my memory. I need to replay this soon. The OST in the main hub alone is still stuck in my head
I agree with this review quite a fair bit, I actually learned about this game on a 2004 or 2005 demo disk, had demos for Death By Degrees and Area 51 on it, but I still genuinely enjoy this game quite a fair bit. I think more so the level design could have been better, if not more transparent about where you need to go easier. The soundtrack was handled by actually quite a few well known composers in video game music, the most noticeable one being Masashi Hamauzu who handled many of the songs, including the hub music, world map music, and most of the level music as well! For those who aren't too familiar with him, he is known for assisting with the soundtrack to Final Fantasy X, and composed the entirety of Final Fantasy XIII's soundtrack, which I love greatly! I personally do find the main surfer rock theme however to be great, it just sounded amazing every time I heard it, and it did make things quite jam packed, just the opening to the game being animated so well, gives me Studio Trigger vibes these days. None the less, phenomenal review, subbed!
I consider Musashi's portrayal much better and someone I would want to hang out with more than FF10's Tidus. Honestly I would want to meet the VA and get my copy signed.
I would say that's a pretty fair review, as I agree with many of the points that you presented. To be honest, as soon as I saw this video on my recommended, I just had to watch it, because growing up I loved playing RPGs like this on the PS2, and this just really hit me in the feels, and brought back alot of really good yet old memories.
I couldn't really get the hang of the game when I was a kid but recently I have been playing it on my ps2 and it's really an underrated ps2 game I think. The framerate is very impressive for a ps2 game and the range of animations as well as how actually dynamic the timing and hit boxes are in combat really make this game shine. Also the cell shading look was a good idea, makes the game still look decently comparable to today's games. I wonder what progressive scan would have done tho, some games look amazing with progressive scan implemented
Currently in the process of buying a ps2 and a copy of this game, played it ALOT with my brother as a kid and can't wait to get back into it, was waiting to see if PsPremuim would add it to the Classics catalog but considering it's a thrid party title probably won't happen or at least not anytime soon, great review!

I played back in the day this game, and to be honest, this is what game created by Tetsuya Nomura, that's what you always get, simple plot with characters that don't evolve beyond their anime trope
Almost Every old game you think it was hard go play it now, you’ll find the challenge was in cams and control .. so for this game.. its to easy but the real challenge or annoying thing was the cam
Loved the game I just wish u didn't have to restart the game after u beat it... it's like right as u got all the swords u didn't have much time to use them ig maybe something a bit more like monster hunter world or just some more things you can do endlessly at the end of the game would make it a diamond
Musashi's kinda bratty, but i love him anyway. his VA is... well, she's a fine enough VA. the directing here... well, it's like Megaman X7. overall an AMAZING game.
I was so mad that this game wasn't a true sequel to the first game. Also idk why I found the voice acting worse than the first one and it lost all it's charm. It was Meh for me.

This was my first PS2 game, I take pride in saying that this was one of my favorite titles for the console. Nostalgic😏

some of the best visuals and music in a game. Core gameplay loop is satisfying but the design is super barebones and repetitive.
The amount of slowdown in this game and the babysitting ruined it for me. Downloading it now to see if emulating it changes my experience
