  • Lisa Gade reviews the Microsoft Surface Book 3, their iconic 2-in-1 convertible laptop, available in 13.5” and 15” sizes. This time we look at the 13.5” which has the most powerful graphics available in a 13” convertible Windows tablet-laptop combo. The casing and design are unchanged, but the internals are updated to Intel 10th gen Ice Lake quad core CPUs and NVIDIA GTX 1650 Mx-Q on the 13.5” and GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q on the 15”. The Book 3 models now come with higher watt chargers, Intel WiFi 6 and the same detachable “clipboard” tablets with Surface Pen support (pen not included).

    i have the first surface book and i was thinking about upgrading. thank you very much this has been helpful. i think people really underestimate the convenience of having a good laptop that can immediately become a tablet/drawing tablet. this all in one form factor has been immeasurably more useful to me than i can explain.

    Thank you for the great review!
    I own the Surface Book 1 since 2016 and didn't upgrade it because the changes were minute. It is the perfect workhorse for me. As an engineer is scribbling in meetings and showing your ideas to clients not a gimmick. And the graphics card helps with CAD on the go.
    Buying the 3 would be very tempting if the Neo wouldn't be coming soon. I guess I'll have to wait.
    Keep up your good work!
    Regards,
    Etna.

    Great review. The competitors you mentioned for the 15" still can't detach the screen, or on the 13" as well, so it still remains unique even against the modern 2&1s that have Nvidia discreet graphics.

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I think with the 3h battery life on the detachable display it makes the form factor very limited and for pros a def poor choice. If you just need the tablet for the day's workflow then you need to recharge it maybe twice to do your job. That is a waste of time and therefore money. As the Surface Book 3 is so expensive you can even buy a tablet and laptop combo to have a great tablet and a great laptop rather than a weak tablet and a constrained CPU SB3.
      I could not recommend it to anyone that needs productivity or efficiency. Just because you can make a 2 in 1 like this does not mean it is the best choice just because you have one device. To do the best you can at whatever you do it is best to have two devices that will do a much better job especially as they will probably cost less. So a Dell XPS 15/17 and a proper tablet and you could probably get an eGPU with a top card for less than the top-spec SB3!

      @raviteja-on2hb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Uniqueness does not always transform to usefulness you know. It's up to the customers to decide if they just want a fairly expensive unique product but not so useful when it is matched up against its better rivals that can provide far more useful stuff at a fairly reasonable size and just has a mature design.

    • @Belgarath777
      @Belgarath777 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@andyH_England not everyone wants to carry around multiple devices. This fills that niche. Not everybody that uses the tablet requires more than 3 hours of battery life knowing it can still be reattached for those rare cases you might and still draw. Not everyone has your use case, so it's good to have options. This fills a certain do it all niche without the need to have mutiple devices. I'd also argue that it's not a 2&1. It's a 3&1, as it can do everything a 2&1 can do with an nvidia gtx GPU and still detach the tablet which the Dell Xps, the Lenovo C940, the Samsung Book Flex, and the HP Spectre cannot.

    • @yamamancha
      @yamamancha 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Belgarath777 I think the general feeling is that usually a major equipment manufacturer shouldn't promote a niche or gimmick product as its flagship and, even if they do, they typically offer the actual implementation people need.
      People would be more forgiving of the Surface Book if there were a Surface "Horizon", maintaining the touch screen for use with the Pen and Dial while providing the power of a high TDP CPU and a dedicated GPU, while also being a modular design with replaceable RAM, SSD, wireless, and battery.
      Drop the detachable screen, switch the position of the GPU and CPU to improve cooling, maintain the split battery design to max out performance. The Book is cool, but ultimately would cost me money in terms of performance losses. I want a Surface Horizon (they can even have the name for free).

    • @Luxalpa
      @Luxalpa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@andyH_England I'm just thinking about how I'd need to carry around both a tablet and a laptop and constantly switch between the devices (and somehow transfer the data over) to see how my models look ingame. That sounds pretty awful tbh. For 3D modeling I feel like Surface book is still the best solution but I'm open to suggestions.

    For Office work is a real beast, but yeah thunderbolt 3 would be nicer to have in this newer version. The compatibility is not the best without it and the extra docking station is ok, only the last version was with mini displayport connector. At least are also other good accessories like usb-c charger and usb c hub with display port and ethernet to avoid get the charger with you all the time. But 5 years latter not thunderbolt 3.

Do you think the SB2 selling lower can compare well with more modern Spectre or Dell XPS 2 in 1? Thank you.

    This benefits from being a unique form factor. I would have liked to see more changes at least in the hardware. Removing some bezel, redoing the hinge to close that gap and moving the headphone jack would have been good changes. I do think windows is losing steam on these surface devices. I hope they aren’t focusing too much on things like the duo. The surface brand is a solid brand with name recognition. They shouldn’t be neglecting it too much.

Great concept, but while typing, my screen disconnects from the base, thus disconnecting my USB, thus dropping all those connections, thus ruining my productivity. Can't say that I'd buy another.

    Is it possible to connect a Surface Book 3 (aspect ratio: 3: 2) to a monitor (aspect ratio: 16: 9) with a conventional HDMI cable using the monitor as the main screen without the image being consumed or warped. Do I need the Surface Dock or can I just use an ordinary adapter / converter?

  • @cizd
    @cizd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The touch screen combined with power was one of the biggest advantages of the Surface Book from what I could see and I still think that's true if you're working with 3D, but for a lot of the old user base I'm not sure this is so compelling anymore. I'm wondering if Microsoft is getting to complacent or if the detachable hinge is holding it back. I don't know how expensive the detachable hinge is, but if it's hindering more innovation that's an issue.

    I just got my book 3 today, and to be fair, I just started charging it like an hour or two ago, but it seems like the tablet part heats up very quickly. Also, the base 13.5" model only comes with 8GB of RAM and *no dedicated graphics*. I didn't look at the specs in detail when I ordered mine, and apparently, I missed that, which is unfortunate. I will probably be returning my Book 3, and, I will instead be getting a Blade Stealth or Blade 15.

    At 10:33 of the video you have a picture with the Surface Book 3 on the right side. My question is in that picture the Surface Book 3 almost looks white. I thought these were grey. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see them offer this in a white look, but does it really look that light in person? I currently have MacBook Pro 16" and I use it mostly in Windows 10 so I wonder if I'd be better off with 15" Surface Book 3 (I'm still in return period). I had tried the Surface Laptop 3 and that was a big time no. But this looks much more powerful. Don't get me wrong in terms of the MacBook Pro 16" as I do love it, but I use Windows 10 80% of the time. I also have the small feeling that perhaps the Surface Book 3 has even more of a glossy screen and I do like that. But MB Pro 16" is also quite awesome to be sure. Glad Microsoft offers something more powerful too.

      @@keyboard_g that's not what the original commenter asked, the question was about the device's competence with animation programs, so anything from Flash, Maya, Blender, C4D, 3DS Max, TV paint or Toon Boom, to which the answer is yes, it handles all of those just fine, but only get it if u indeed 1. Actually draw thus using that tablet functionality properly 2. Would rather just have one device than have several 3. Are they likely making it Icelake temporarily? Since Tiger Lake is not yet ready that is why the majority of its competitors are all 9th gen...

  • @petersonfamily6223
    @petersonfamily6223 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the review Lisa. Waited and Waited for the SB3 hoping for a redesign but we have this refresh that addresses weaknesses many people have with their SB2's. Weak charger, updated, the slow disconnect of the screen, now faster and with programs auto-closing or transferring hopefully no lockups, thunderbolt 3 something everyone was asking for well keep asking but per Microsoft you should feel safe that no one can getcha through that TB3 vulnerability, CPU and GPU a bit better but nothing to write home about, the keyboard still not Bluetooth enabled to connect to the screen while it is not attached, touchpad great 5 years ago and just ok today, keyboard great 5 years ago and good today when compared to how many others are great now, and the price is still extremely high compared to other systems but if you absolutely need to have a removable screen this is the only game in town but how many users really need or use this feature enough to offset the cost. I am disappointed and waited for what?? Well at least Dell updated the XPS 15 and now has a 17 as well to look at.

    Awesome review Lisa ..was looking forward to this review . How ironic Microsoft claim they made this for artists and photographers with minimal options for those who want to take prints !! And that jittery lines ! And no LTE
    Your T shirt says it all " Oh- SNAP" . Thanks again 😊

      I'm a month late but here I go. Lisas review of the pen is less than satisfactory imo. Adobe has very good line smoothing, and stuff like the jittering can be fixed by tweaking a couple settings in windows. Hold to right click is one that should be toggled. And about a week after the book 3 came out, a new pen was released, kinda shadow dropped though, that fixes a lot of issues.

    does the tablet have a port for charging battery? so that you don't have to bring the dock when you travel. if you want a 15 inch tablet.

    Great review. I'm weighing this against the Mac Book Pro. We use the Microsoft 365 platform so looking for a better workflow. The one thing I never really hear any reviewer talk about is the amount of storage space that gets sucked up by all the updates for both Apple & Microsoft. I wonder if you have found that one is worse than the other.

    can someone school me on how to change the volume output on MS Surface Laptop 3 from 2 steps increments to 1 step? It is stupid to jump two steps by default. the 3.5mm hp port is in a odd position when used in laptop mode.

    Gaming on SurfaceBook 2/3 is hampered by Microsoft's standard driver, which severely restricts the GPU. If you install the nVidia Game Ready driver from nVidia's website and set the power levels to full, the gaming capabilities nearly double.

    I wish Dell would show the final specs & price for the XPS 17 already. The 15 isn't quite what I need, so I'm hoping the 17 can surpass or meet the SB3 at a lower price or higher specs.
    -I need a good drawing tablet and I have not been satisfied with Wacom really ever. Maybe they can change my mind. Just doesn't feel as good as drawing on the Surface. I don't need to be able to detach the screen, but it needs to feel good to draw on.
    -I need 2tb. I mostly work in games, so all that source data takes up a TON of space. I have the 1tb SB2 now and I'm constantly offloading source files to my external HDD. Really would like to not have to do that so often.
    -1660 TI barely cuts it for me but I'll take it. Would love something better though.
    -Need a bright screen. The SB2 on full brightness is perfect for where I sit in my home office (patio). Other laptops make me squint.
    -Finally, battery life. I get around 4 hours on battery saver with Unreal Engine running on the SB2. I am not interested in anything that performs worse than that. From what I know of the Dell XPS 15, it outperforms the SB2 and SB3 on battery life, but it doesn't hit those other notes.

    I'm still rocking the SB1 with the performance base.

    I like the 3:2 aspect ratio, the high DPI, the discrete graphics and keyboard. It's a tough sell though in 2020, especially for the price.

    Hi fantastic review! I am looking for a laptop that will be able to support high amounts of productivity (ex. 3 displays) as well as touch screen capabilities. Can you suggest a 2-in-1 alternative to the surface book 3 that is more powerful? I would like the ability to turn the screen around, but I do not need to remove the screen entirely.

      The 15" HP Spectre x360 with 6 core CPU and the Lenovo Yoga C940 15" are more powerful convertibles.

    I have a first gen surface book, great build quality but recently for no reason at all the battery in the tablet portion expanded and cracked the screen (though it still functions through a separate monitor). Not sure how I am going to get this fixed out of warranty yet, not willing to pay $500 for what is clearly a production issue and not my fault.
    Great review, agree that it needs a dramatic refresh in design, at least for the keyboard. Come on Microsoft, you can do better.

    After owning multiple surface devices and a current daily Surface Book 2, i think i'm getting something else this time. Don't get me wrong I have loved all my Surace devices but they always get hot with high fan speeds but the battery life and snappiness is amazing. The 15" model with the Quadro RTX 3000 is tempting though, one of my co-workers has one on order.

    Hi Lisa, big fan of your review! With this one I have to say that you might have been a bit too focused on a specific kind of user. For most professionals this laptops offer s everything they need. And you can detach the the keyboard base and make it a lot lighter. People always say you attach the display, but it is really the other way around. The other convertibles are a lot more heavy in tablet mode (including the quoted Samsung) as you can't detach anything as the laptop is in the base.
    Yes, other laptops (not convertibles) have more powerful 45W CPU, but many people want to have better battery life. A 15 W design will be more battery friendly and when travelling will be a thing again, this will become useful to many how are not constantly rendering videos etc.

    would be great if reviews also mention after sales, warranty type information. It's very relevant when buying machines that go 1000 USD and up. You don't want to be out of warranty when the product is unreliable.
