Well, from Sophie's perspective he really is. She's much younger at the time. Then when the curse happens she starts thinking about him almost as a child. So yeah, it's a matter of perspective
apparently the writer of the book said once that the book was more Sofies version of the tale while the film was more how Howl himself saw the events...
I loved book Sophie’s sass and stubbornness so much. As for Howl, his drama in the novel had me in tears from laughing so hard. There’s this time where he gets a cold: “I feel ill,” he announced. “I’m going to bed, where I may die.” He tottered piteously to the stairs. “Bury me beside Mrs. Pentstemmon,” he croaked as he went up to bed. Howl’s voice was presently heard shouting weakly, “Help me, someone! I’m dying from neglect up here!”
My favorite thing I've seen people say about the movie vs the book is that the book is Sophie's version of how they met and the movie is Howl's version 🤣
Sophie: ... then this tall guy started to hint on me outta nowhere, it was uncomfortable Howl in the other room: I saved her from some guards, she was looking uncomfortable ya now
I dunno if this is true, but: My favorite thing about the book version is that Howl is, apparently, a guy from _our_ world, who figured out magic and teleported himself to the magic world.
Yeah, in our world he's the loser Howell Jenkins that lives in Wales in his older's sisters garage. In the magic world, he's the powerfull wizard Howl Pendragon that steals girls' hearts.
YES AHDHSJ What's even more iconic is the fact that he's actually got a PhD(?) (or maybe near to finishing his thesis) before he decided to abandon literally everything and decide to live in Sophie's world as a spooky wizard man AND HE'S FROM WALES AND HE'S A RUGBY PLAYER
Fun fact: that "elaborate blonde hair" is probably a mullet. Diana Wynne Jones said that Andre Agassi was exactly how she imagined Howl and in the 80s (when she saw him) he had a WILD mullet ;-;
@@awkwardorangedrawz5914 There's a somewhat small but vibrant community of Howl Series fans on Tumblr (which is a delight to be a part of) and there's a running inside joke about Mullet Howl™️ being a thing, and a few people editing or drawing him with a mullet lol. It started as just speculation (the original post was actually by a friend of mine), like "oh shit he was from the 80's what if he had a mullet" but THEN someone posted an interview of Diana Wynne Jones talking about the tennis player Andre Agassi in the 80's (who sported a mullet): "I think my moment of revelation came when I saw this young man come on court in the most flamboyant clothes. He had a sweet smile and questionably blonde hair and a generally chirpy glamour that in fact concealed huge skill. When he was interviewed he confessed to hating to get angry and it was also said that he slithered out of winning when it came to the big matches. And I thought, My God! This Andre Agassi is the image of Howl in my book Howl's Moving Castle!" ....Anyway, a lot of people half-jokingly take that as evidence that Howl did, in fact, have a mullet lmaoooo
Honestly the book version of Sophie is really underrated, after turning into an old lady Sophie basically becomes and aggressive menace to society with her constant invasive cleaning. On top of that, Sophie literally beats the witch by repeatedly whacking her over the head with a flaming stick.
From the start, people who meet Old Sophie just. just know she's a witch. Everyone can see it. Except her. Take a look at that young man who buys a spell for his duel the next day. Or the way Howl treats the suits she 'mends'. When she talks to her work about how cute Howl is, the suit starts giving him charisma buffs, and the way he acts show us that he *knows* it's doing that. And then there's the weedkiller scene. Which is just gorgeous.
My favorite part about Howl is that Diana Wynne Jones didn't understand why fans told her that they wanted to marry him. Her response to women falling in love with him was, and I quote, "much as I love him, he is the last person I would want to marry. Apart from anything else, I would want to get in the bathroom sometimes." 😂
Oh i know they have kids but i didnt know they were married the first book kinda left that possibility vague and you can always live together and kids without being married meh But thanks for telling
Now I know we’re all freaking out over Howl (which is valid howl is beautiful) but Lavender’s drawing of Micheal is cute too, some appreciation is in place
Honestly, the anti-war sentiments in the film was probably added in due to Miyazaki's early aged experiences with WWII and his general anti war sentiments as well (I remember reading an article that described him particularly against the Iraq War, so that may have played some role as well, although depending on the storyboarding time frame maybe not so much). This is also reflected in The Wind Rises, which was his last full movie with Studio Ghibli. So it's genuinely not surprising that when there was a war-focused opportunity in the background of the original novel, he dragged it to the foreground for further discussion.
yes! if i’m not mistaken, he turned down going to the oscars when spirited away was nominated for best animated movie because he was against the iraq war and refused to go to a country that was bombing another.
It's certainly a message that you could find in almost every Miyazaki movie, which just shows how great the impact was on him. In a way it's nice that through these movies, even when the people who experienced these tragedies will be gone, there will always be a reminder of it for the future.
Yes, there’s an interview with the book author, Diana Wynne Jones, about the film adaptation in which she talks about how both her and Miyazaki experienced ww2 and that they respond to it differently in their art. For Miyazaki war is often front and center, but for dwj it’s a background thing, present but not confronted directly. She also points out that having the war more explicit in the film version of howls moving castle is a reason to include Miyazaki’s ‘beloved flying machines’.
I would think it's a much higher honor for a writer to get a Ghibli adaptation than a Hollywood or Netflix adaptation. Even if they made a lot of changes from the source material, it doesn't feel like some kind of downgrade and that's really rare to see. I guess if I ever wrote a book that got animated by Studio Ghibli or a live action by Hollywood, I would be infinitely more excited for a Ghibli anomation.
Fun fact! Book Howl could have removed the Witch's curse in a snap, but Sophie had already placed a second, much stronger curse on herself by affirming that she was, in fact, a boring old woman. She talked it into being, so neither Howl or Calcifer could remove it until Sophie changed how she saw and talked to herself.
@@Zhavari the part where Sophie finds out Howl knows she has a curse; he tells her he tried to break it several times "but came to the conclusion that you liked being in disguise" & "it must be, since you're doing it to yourself"
Also, Sophie keeps telling herself that she keeps failing because she's the eldest of three, but later Howl tells her that it's just because she doesn't think things through. Later when facing off with the witch, sophie fails again but this time she tells herself that she wasn't thinking! I think it's so cute that Howl helped Sophie to change the way she sees herself😊
Thank you for talking about how Howl’s personality changed, as well! It’s so interesting to me how drastically his personality was changed. He was made far more dreamy in the movie, however, in the book, where he starts out more as a womanizing childish man, he goes through much more noticeable character development. My favorite detail in the book is that Calcifer says, “The day you show up unshaved and without your hair dyed to save a woman is the day you’re in love.” Which Howl later does to save Sophie.
Reminds me of when my great nan had to go to hospital in the middle of the night but wouldn't go worh out a full face of makeup and a corset with like petticoats and all that. Poor doctor had to undress her and didn't know where to start lol
Don't give up! It's not easy, it takes a lot of hard work and determination!😎👍 How you draw now is not how you will draw later on. You're artwork will get better as long as you keep at it. It may take a while but you can honestly do it! I would suggest keeping old work so you can see how in little ways and details you grew over time and some stylistic choices you changed over time.😊💖 It will be a good self esteem boost for you!😁🌸🌼🌺🌷🌻
Sorry if that's a lot, I am just very into drawing and art work. I get super happy when others get into art. I don't believe in putting down nor judging those who are starting out or have been doing it awhile no matter what age.😁👍 Art is precious and it means a lot to people no matter what age they are. Children, Teens, Adults, and even Elderly. Art is precious and means something differently to everyone.☺️💖 We all start out at a different level, in a different unique style, and for different reasons. Art is important to those with the creativity to imagine it and bring it to life. Not saying all don't have a level of creativity. Everyone does have a level of creativity that is unique and special to that person!☺️💖🖌️🖍️🖊️🖋️⚔️🗡️📜🎨🖼️
Just own it, if you're drawings are ugly make it a feature rather than a bug. Then as time goes on you'll start getting better. Also, the concept of "good art" is garage just do what makes you happy.
I thought the same thing! I had watched it before but i couldn't really remember it, so i desided to watch it Yesterday (the Universe really is spoiling us😄)
I think with Sohpie, her yellowish eyes was more regarding her scalera, since older individuals tend to have a yellowing in the eyes from exposure to the elements. She actually was described as having blue-green eyes! I only recall this because i drew her from the book once too, in highschool I believe. Lol
No your absolutely correct she described herself in comparison to lettie in the beginning of the book. Honestly I found it funny how Hayao Miyazaki almost completely switched around Sophie and letties descriptions.
I prefer Michael’s book design over the movie, he’s more interesting then just “little messy boy” especially with the super polite trait. Interesting comparison overall!
Michael in the original Japanese version is super polite to Howl, Calcifer and customers. Michael addresses Sophie as Sophie-san, which is a polite way to address someone. And when he addresses customers he's using a very old-fashioned, formal way of speaking. He speaks to Howl is the way a student would address a teacher. Really, he's overall polite, but sometimes uses a childish, informal way of speaking to indicate how young he is. Japanese has a lot of levels of formality baked into the language, which is quite hard to translate into English. Japanese, unlike English and most germanic or romance languages, has at the simplest 3 levels of formality, but depending on the situation, can have more levels of formality. So, the Japanese Markle is a young, polite Japanese child. Children aren't expected to be super formal and start adopting the more formal ways of speech until they graduate high school.
since the movie is Howls POW (who is 27 and from our world) so the teen michael is (he was like 16) is a child to him while for sophie he is a fine young man (her beiing form the 1910ths version of her world)
I feel like book howl is the type of person who wants to try to learn how to play wonderwall and not getting too far into it stop learning the song since it doesn't sound the way that he wants it to
@@Ratsonfire yeah, the color of her eyes is described as blue/green, so the yellow definitely is about the sclera. Also I pictured her hair longer for some reason. All the "her hair falling on her face" allusions made me think she had long messy hair, probably a bit curly. Kinda like Princess Merida.
My favourite thing about book Howl is probably just that he's this ridiculously awkward Welsh guy who just casually lives in a parallel world from his own and just lives under pseudonyms instead of as Howell Jenkins. And that he's somehow a game-dev and a sorcerer depending on what world you're in. (and let's not forget that he's an absolute drama queen)
@@georgyekimov4577 He tells everyone he's a game dev and then he goes and does wizard stuff. Does he develop the games based on Sophie's world that he gives to his nephew?
The author pointed this out too! They love movie charas as much as they do with the book versions, but in different ways! It’s a pretty refreshing way to think about adaptions
Not gonna lie, I like the book more but it's due to the following reasons 1. The insane amount of pure stubbornness in Sophie and her relationship with Howl ~ let's not forget how COWARD this man is pls 2. Michael 3. Sophie's sisters
I liked the whole drama of Sophie thinking Howl liked her sister when he was just too proud to ask Sophie what she herself liked and was asking her sister what Sophie liked instead
@@axx011 I love it, so I'll always recommend it. But, keep in mind that the movie is a very creative adaptation of the book. The major storyline is very similar (Sophie cursed, find moving castle etc). There is no war, the witch of the waste is the antagonist. Howl isn't a romanticised heroic character. He's from our world and accidentally opened a portal to Ingary. He acts like he doesn't have a heart. He is vain, eccentric and such a coward! He can't fall in love, so he is a cad. Sophie is very outspoken and bitter about being cursed. She doesn't have the highest opinion of Howl and they bicker a lot...then fall in love with each other, faults and all. Sorry, long way around is that if you want to read the movie, you might not enjoy it. If you go in without expectations, it's a great novel. Give it a go (if you have google books you can preview a bit before buying).
With the line "Elaborate blonde hair" I 100% believe he has a massive curly mullet :'D After all, he's from Wales in the 80s! There's even a quote from the author about how she saw Andre Agassi on tv being interviewed after a tennis game and immediately went "oh that's Howl!" I honestly love drawing him with a luxurious mullety mane, it's so ridiculous and it just fits his energy
i read the book recently and wow. the whole time i was reading i was just like “howl is a hot mess and i love him”. i still /adore/ the movie but their characters in the book are so good and the story is really fleshed out in a satisfying way.
agree... i read the book before i watched the movie and seeing howl as this noble beautiful person was so weird because i was so attached to book howl. the book is definitely underrated compared to the movie, even though its just as good.
@@DazzlingPotatoes The book is called “Howl’s Moving Castle” by Diana Wynne Jones, and I personally had to purchase it from Amazon to read it. You can also try looking for it in your local library first or buy a virtual copy (which is usually cheaper than the paper copies)
i think my fav part from the book is when howl takes sophie and michael to wales and sophie is completely losing her mind over cars lol and when howl gives his nephew(?) a videogame that is literally just a puzzle game based on his castle
I love the little details in the book like how Sophie is never really described because (even though it’s 3rd person), most people don’t describe the way they look or think too much about it, but fixate on the way others look. I also like how Howl was supposed to grow up to be this jock doctor and he actually became a recluse who dropped out of school to live in his sister’s garage and learn magic and just happened to stumble into a magical alternate world.
I read the book and watched the movie, and I agree that people should appreciate them separately. I said to my fiance not too long ago that the movie is more inspired by the book. I love both movie and book equally, because of how different they are. The story is my favorite. My favorite movie and one of my favorite books.
Warning to the arachnophobic people who want to read the book: in the movie Howl's room is covered in golden trinkets and treasures, in the book is just spiders, lots of spiders
I love the spider scenes, I feel like it shows so much of Howl’s personality and the way his compassion looks. The way Howl treats the spiders is a microcosm of how he treats Calcifer, Sophie and Michael.
@@Bzlaabnieni yeah, but I'm arachnophobic and had my brother not warned me about the spiders and told me what parts to skip I would have had a panic attack, so I feel that passing on the warning is fair
Thank you so much omg, that would have given me the biggest heart attack T_T Extreeemely phobic of spooders, very grateful for the heads up! Now I know what to look out for
I absolutely love Howl in the movie, but i just ADORE his book character. He's so whiny and vain and much more interesting than in the movie where he's more heroic and... Welp, basic. Just my opinion of course!!
I like their relationship more too! It's more realistic and developed. You never truly need to question how they fell in love in the book, because the heightened emotions are certainly there, however they are cleverly disguised. To name a few ways, Sophie's concern for her sister, the general vanity/flirtatiousness from Howl, and an ample amount of snark. The movie, while also quite the love story, feels emptier to me in comparison.
In case you peoples don't know, Howls Moving Castle is a Trilogy. So go check out the other two if your interested! They're really good. Howl and Sophie aren't the main characters anymore but they are still in the books and in my opinion are the highlight of the second two
What a lovely video! I think when Diana said Michael was "hovering by Howl's elbow" she meant it not as a description of height but as a description of how close Michael was standing next to Howl, and with an intense focus on whatever Howl was doing.
I actually just finished reading the book the other day and I love both of the pieces of media! I like to think of it as Miyazaki was retelling the story to his own interpretation of the characters. There are a lot of differences in both of them, but I think I enjoy them both equally!
Diana Wynne Jones is such a a great but underrated author. Her books and writings are wonderful and they really helped me in improving my English language as a child.
Was that the one with way too much focus on some uncle's peonies, or do I misremember xD I loved Diana Wynne Jones' whole publications as a teen, basically breathed those books :'D
@@ziseotomo1398 I don’t know if she’s underrated with the amount of awards and honours she’s won. She’s just less known in the USA, but she was a GIANT author in the UK, mostly known for her children’s books.
He is absolutely adorable! (≧▽≦). And, yeah, It would be really fun to see the book version of him in the movie. ( I bet people would simp for him as much as they do for Howl )
@@Princess_Belle_ Sorry I was kind of unclear. I mean it in a "oh my god he is so cute" kind of way; and not "Please be my husband" kind of way (aka the way people are with Howl) I hope that cleared it up ^^
So happy to see the book getting some attention! It's one of my favorite books of all time. Book Howl's hair being more "anime" than in the anime is hilarious (the pink color was also described as "bacon and eggs", which always made me laugh). Micheal's definitely my favorite to see people interpret since he's so very different in the book! Great job.
When I first read that part I thought that meant Sophie had turned his hair pink because she cooked bacon over Calcifer, who was in charge of the bathroom plumbing, while Howl was in there working on his hair. There was a lot of clues given in the book to help the reader figure out magic-related things before the characters did, and I had thought that was one of them.
Love encouraging people to read the book!!! I love telling people that book!howl carries around an acoustic guitar he doesn’t know how to play to impress women, and that he bought the guitar instead of basic necessities for Michael and Calcifer
Happy to see a comparison for Howl's Moving Castle! I was one of the people who read the book first before the movie, and I was definitely surprised at how things were changed for the film. After I watched it, I was initially disappointed in how different it was to the book, but now I've come to love the film just as much for its own story. I think that on their own, both the book and the movie have a lot of heart, even if they're fairly different in plot.
I actually read Howl’s Moving Castle Before before watching the movie and I was absolutely confused watching it but I absolutely love the adaptation either way. Remember, you can love both :>
I like how the movie and book almost feel like two different stories since things diverge so much in the climax, it helps me enjoy both of them on their own terms. I don't like when people argue one is better than the other, so I appreciate your even handed approach at acknowledging the differences without that combative energy. These are really nice book design interpretations!
He's a polite boye who has a big crush on a gal, he's respectful and slightly scared of Sophie and befriends her, they conspire together quite a bit and she attempts to help him with his studies and all :D He also wants to help Sophie out of her curse although Sophie doesn't exactly know he knows xD
As someone who read the book first and then ran to buy the movie. I actually really enjoyed both adaptions despite how wildly different they are. Howl's Moving Castle is hands down one of my favorite books. And the movie is also one of my favorites. Fun fact, even the author, Diana Wynne Jones really enjoyed the movie adaptation, even if the movie Sophie and Howl were a bit more polished then her messy characters. And she adores Miyazaki's castle, and had several models of it around her home
I adore both the movie and the book, even though they're very different. I saw the movie first as a kid and then read the books as an adult and I do prefer the books as far as Sophie and Howl's characterization/development goes. I especially love the third book, House of Many Ways. They aren't the main characters, but getting to see them interacting as a domestic married couple is just so good 😫💖
I think the only thing I never forgave the movie for was how they didn't carry over Sophie's power's. She was such a badass in the book, where as in the movie she was kinda a doormat even at the end.
She definitely didn't act like a doormat. If anything, her lack of powers made her stubbornness more admirable. But I'd really love to see her in the books, she sounds fascinating.
In the version of the book that we have in my house, the beginning of each chapter has an image of what the characters look like (that matter in said chapter). You got Calcifer pretty close. Though I must admit that I was a little put off by how different Micheal is from book to movie. In the book he's about 15, but in the movie he looks about 9...
Oml your rendition of micheal is so utterly adorable I instantly fell in love with him. What a good sweet boy. I do like markl from the movie but micheal was definitely the one character I wish had gotten more screen time and had been closer to the book because he was just so pure and his romance with his girlfriend was so cute and I just love that boy so much lmao.
This was such a fun video! I myself like the book better because I love how unperfect the book characters are, Howl is so vain and silly and Sophie is so fiesty and self sufficient, and they make a nice pair. I do love the movie, but for some reason it seems more thin than the book to me. Idk. I still love both dearly.
I thought the "watery yellowish eyes" referred to how in old age, the whites of one's eyes gradually turn a dull pale yellow (or darker yellow if you've outlived your liver), and the outer edges of the iris grow paler so the border between the sclera and the iris isn't quite as high contrast as it is when we're younger. So the overall image of the eye gets murkier.
My favourite author of all time is Diana Wynne Jones, so when she collaborated with my favourite anime producers Studio Ghibli my little high school girl heart flipped. I still remember how excited i was to watch the movie but I was definitely taken aback at how different Howl was compared to the book. Even now a decade later, after rereading the book (for the fifth time) I still enjoy it and I'm so happy to see the movie became mainstream! Thank you for reimagining the characters from the book, your drawings are beautiful hehe although my image of Howl is definitely more obnoxiously and flamboyant with lots and lots of gem rings on his fingers and earrings and necklaces on top of his frills and scalloped sleeves.. You should read the continuation: Castle in the Air and The House of Many Ways: there might be more descriptions of Howl. Sophie's shy demeanor has changed too and they have a son! It's cute~
It's interesting how in both the book and the movie, the whole thing with Howl is that he's "heartless", literally. The book is the one that actually explored this as a literal and metaphorical concept more by kinda... making the book version him a bit of an asshole. I still love both of him tho uwu
Finally, some appreciation for the book! I read the book before watching the movies, and I've always had in the back of my mind whenever I watch the movie, "That's not what Howl looks like--" I love what you've done here! I don't think you'll see this, but just YES.
I was obsessed with howl’s clothes while I read the book. The fact that he only wore about four outfits (technically two, but magic) and how each were portrayed were so interesting to me. The blue suit he started in was charming, and after it was slimed during the tantrum and cut into a hundred triangles by an angry and spite-driven Sophie, not to mention grown to about a mile long, it was fixed. The grey suit was accidentally enchanted by Sophie’s gift of speaking life into things. I remember freaking out over the section where Sophie was complaining that the grey suit couldn’t have ‘caught’ her with its alluring spell, but the blue suit (which wasn’t enchanted) worked the same on her, which was the nail in the coffin that she actually fell for howl. The rugby outfit, which was just the grey suit transformed, was messy but cute, showing more of his old home life and how his sister sees him vs the noble and extravagant Howl everyone else sees. And the black suit, which was just the blue suit transformed, showed his mourning for the teacher the witch of the waste had killed, who was like family to Howl. Plus, Sophie was insisting to know what suit was underneath, mostly to make sure no more girls were getting caught in the grey suit’s “trap” since she was growing more and more jealous. She insisted on making sure it was the blue suit and that he didn’t wear the grey suit while “trying to court” Miss Angorian.
HELL YEAH!!! this book was my favorite when i was younger and i was always so bitter that it got overshadowed by the movie. i'm over that now, lol, but it's still super cool to see you draw these characters that meant so much to me
When I finally read the book, I was pleasantly surprised to find out Sophie was originally some sort of strawberry blonde. As an auburn haired person myself, it made me really happy haha - especially because the descriptor wasn't "flame red" or "ginger" its so tiresome hearing those they always sound artificial and unflattering but the way they described her hair was so nice lol
Michael looks so good! And I love how Howl turned out too, his outfit is so flamboyant - it feels right. I love both the movie and the book, even though the plots are wildly different I think they compliment each other so well.
I just finished the book… it was so so good! I love the movie and the book sm now. I read it to understand the plot of the movie better but um… it had a completely different plot 😅 I did just start reading it like it’s own book instead of comparing it to the movie which really helped. Your art also helped me visualize the characters and it made the whole experience so much better. I love both versions of Howl and Sophie so much! And the last scene of the book was so good 😭 Would love to see a drawing of that with your beautiful character renditions!
I wonder how would the book versions of the characters react to their movie versions. First thing that came to mind was Michael's movie version being all giddy and excited at how cool and tall his book version.
I love this series so much! It's charming and interesting to see how these characters differ. I very much adore your interpretations and style. Please keep drawing!
The book is wildly underrated. Not only is it hilarious, but it's well written with a classic idea and an interesting premise. The characters, foreshadowing, and magic system is so cool. And I adore Sophie with all my heart. She definitely doesn't get enough credit. And the Witch of the Waste and her grand plan was sadly cut. But I also appreciate Miyazaki's version for it's touch on war and the fact that it creates its own creative liberties that, while while going out from the book most of the time, stands up as it's own
YESSSS I found out a few years ago about the book and it was such an interesting read compared to the movie! Your three favs are mine as well ahaha. Fun fact: IDK if it was in the book you got but in the digital copy i bought the author noted she had seen the movie and Ghibli made everyone a lot more noble, especially Howl :D
Because of this video, I read the book, and I have to say: WHAT A WONDERFUL BOOK, like my gosh, it was so good. It was funny, cute and kinda romantic, even if I didn't read any of their (Howl and Sophie's) interactions as romantic. It's just, it was really good. It gave me that chill, that wonder of immersing myself in a magical fantastical world and gosh, I really missed that. Highly recommended.

Yeah, in our world he's the loser Howell Jenkins that lives in Wales in his older's sisters garage. In the magic world, he's the powerfull wizard Howl Pendragon that steals girls' hearts.
YES AHDHSJ What's even more iconic is the fact that he's actually got a PhD(?) (or maybe near to finishing his thesis) before he decided to abandon literally everything and decide to live in Sophie's world as a spooky wizard man

This Andre Agassi is the image of Howl in my book Howl's Moving Castle!"
....Anyway, a lot of people half-jokingly take that as evidence that Howl did, in fact, have a mullet lmaoooo

I agree. Both are just wonderful. In fact I love that there are now two amazing versions of this story.
Honestly the book version of Sophie is really underrated, after turning into an old lady Sophie basically becomes and aggressive menace to society with her constant invasive cleaning. On top of that, Sophie literally beats the witch by repeatedly whacking her over the head with a flaming stick.
They even describe her as a natural disaster. I love her.

iconic
From the start, people who meet Old Sophie just. just know she's a witch. Everyone can see it. Except her. Take a look at that young man who buys a spell for his duel the next day. Or the way Howl treats the suits she 'mends'. When she talks to her work about how cute Howl is, the suit starts giving him charisma buffs, and the way he acts show us that he *knows* it's doing that. And then there's the weedkiller scene. Which is just gorgeous.

I was boutta say! More love for Michael please, he looks wonderful!
Yesss! I prefer the book version of him so much more than the movie
She also points out that having the war more explicit in the film version of howls moving castle is a reason to include Miyazaki’s ‘beloved flying machines’.
love this comment and the discussions!
Generally Miyazaki will add an environmentalist or anti war message to his films.

@@Aidlevice I agree
And he is very pretty
Don't forget he's also an absolute loverboy for Sophie's sister!
Yeah i like Micheal to be older bc in the movie I'm just thinking, "Howl is not responsible enough to care for this child. Someone call cps."
since the movie is Howls POW (who is 27 and from our world) so the teen michael is (he was like 16) is a child to him while for sophie he is a fine young man (her beiing form the 1910ths version of her world)

2. Michael
3. Sophie's sisters

Well that's ghibli for u.
"That's my girl" I died.
"Calcifer is... The Joker."
I mean in one of the older book covers i think calcifer was green soooooo
I wasn’t prepared for how incredibly cute Michael ended up being

This was such a fun video! I myself like the book better because I love how unperfect the book characters are, Howl is so vain and silly and Sophie is so fiesty and self sufficient, and they make a nice pair. I do love the movie, but for some reason it seems more thin than the book to me. Idk. I still love both dearly.
Calcifer - Gets described as looking similar to the Joker
My brain - We live in a society Howl
ps. love the drawings ^^
That gets even funnier when you find out Howls VA is batman
@@ronaldshelny9439 Isn't Calcifer's VA also Mike Wazowski's?
It's cute~
I wanted to marry book Howl and just Howl in general ESPECIALLY WHEN VOICED BY CHRISTIAN BALE
cant be the only person who appreciates “leblehblehbleh”
Honestly idk why, but I never click off till I hear that name lol
It's interesting how in both the book and the movie, the whole thing with Howl is that he's "heartless", literally. The book is the one that actually explored this as a literal and metaphorical concept more by kinda... making the book version him a bit of an asshole. I still love both of him tho uwu
Finally, some appreciation for the book! I read the book before watching the movies, and I've always had in the back of my mind whenever I watch the movie, "That's not what Howl looks like--"
I love what you've done here!

In the book sophie had already known howl in the past? Was he looking for her like in the movie?
@@shila4746 No
I wonder how would the book versions of the characters react to their movie versions. First thing that came to mind was Michael's movie version being all giddy and excited at how cool and tall his book version.
I love this series so much! It's charming and interesting to see how these characters differ. I very much adore your interpretations and style. Please keep drawing!
Your intro is so well animated- I could never
Book!Michael looks amazing! I remember I loved his character in the book, and you brought him to life real well.
But I also appreciate Miyazaki's version for it's touch on war and the fact that it creates its own creative liberties that, while while going out from the book most of the time, stands up as it's own
:0 I love the new intro
Finally a comment mentioning it, it’s amazing!
I didn't know you watched Lavendertowne!
I was thinking about that while watching this lol
Would you mind doing How To Train Your Dragon, next?
That one would be so interesting omg
Theres a book on how to train your dragon?
@@hxlvys It started as a book series!
@@hxlvys the dragons are tiny in the books!
I love all of your designs for them!! AND MICHEAL!! IS PERFECT!!!! 😭💜
