    hey, guys! i'm from Latvia. Have a question how too high profee: how many time to this job you need per day, because on our factory teamleaders wanna see cnc perfectly cleaned, but don't give a time and don't understood, what it's not a few minetes job. Sometimes i run 2-4 different centers and cannot done it, cause must produce=) nice video, understood all of dat, but interesting how dat wors on HAAS factories. Thanks!

    You say you use Castrol MB50. We used to use that, now we don't as it says on the MSDS, " contains material that may cause target organ damage, based on animal data. Target organs: Kidneys" Needless to say, we don't use that anymore. we switched to a product called 585XT, been great.

    I would like the chip strainer shown in the video @10:30- I asked my local rep and they couldn't find it. I have a VF1.

    I am a student at CSUN and I am getting ready to flush the system.Could you please recommend a type of high alkaline solution to use. I am a bit hesitant to just buy any kind since I will be using this in a VF4. I would really appreciate it.Thank you

      Delbert Stewart Hi Delbert. Most of the larger coolant manufacturers will have an alkaline cleaner they either supply or that they will recommend; it might be best to start with your coolant supplier to check their recommendation. Since we are using Castrol brand coolant in the Haas factory, we have used Castrol's "Flexiclean" Heavy Duty Multi-Purpose Alkaline Cleaner in the few instances when we've needed to thoroughly clean out a machine's entire coolant system. The Castrol Flexiclean cleaner should work fine for your VF-4, if you don't find another resource. Hope this helps!

      Hi William. Chesson - We are using Castrol Hysol MB-50 in this video. We also use it throughout the Haas factory. It is a high oil content semi-synthetic water soluble coolant that works quite effectively on both steel and aluminum. Hope this helps!

      Why aren't you using XBB products? We have used Alusol SL 51 XBB for over two years now and its the best cutting fluid I've ever seen. I can see the comment was made 2 years ago - have you started using XBB by now?

    Why should we add a concentrate into the water, but not vice versia? Do you have a clear video explonation on that?

      euclid9718, The water soluble oils used in most coolant concentrates work best when poured into a larger batch of water. You'll need to contact your coolant supplier to get the exact reason this happens chemically but we show an example of mixing coolant both ways in this video here: th-cam.com/video/Rv1kU0UrsBo/w-d-xo.html

    Let's say you run a machine purely for prototyping and it gets low usage. In other words, perhaps you run it once every couple of weeks. What's the best way to manage coolant and what type?

      Martin05rc, that is a good and unusual question. There are several things you should probably consider when running your coolant intermittently.
      Minimize evaporation: Evaporation of the water in your coolant mixture is likely what you’ll need to check most often. The hotter the ambient temperature the more quickly the water will evaporate out of the solution. Luckily this tends to leave most of the cutting fluid behind. You can add more water to the existing coolant but be careful to add at least a small portion of new cutting fluid to the “make-up” water as some coolants do not tolerate adding straight water to an existing batch. We look at this in several of our “coolant” videos. You can minimize coolant evaporation by leaving the covers on the coolant tank. This keeps any air movement across the top of the coolant from increasing evaporation.
      If evaporation is significant you might consider laying plastic sheeting or
      something similar directly on top of the coolant to really minimize air
      contact, similar to how swimming pool owners sometimes approach this problem.
      Check concentration: Because the concentration of your coolant increases as the water evaporates out (the ratio of cutting fluid to water increases) you need to check your concentration regularly and particularly after it has been out of use for a period of time. This will tellyou if you need to top up the tank with a rich or lean mixture. Again, look at some of the other “coolant” videos for help with these calculations.
      Mix coolant before running: Some coolant types and brands are more likely than others to separate during times of inactivity. This is something you will need to test for with the coolant you are using. Some shops will run their coolant systems to “re-mix” the coolant after it has been sitting. You may want to consider periodically mixing the coolant even when the machine is idle depending on how your coolant performs in this manner.

      Thanks for your detailed reply. We've seen what I am going to call "growth" on the surface of our VF3-SS's coolant in the tank. I don't remember what type of coolant we are using. Are there types that promote bacterial growth or even mold if left sitting for weeks. I'm just concerned about the idea of a machine not running for many weeks and then seeing use for, say, a full week or two. That pretty much describes our utilization cycles. Thanks again.

      martin05rc, Most modern high performance coolants include some sort of anti-bacterial agent in their chemical makeup. The coolant we run here at the factory is Castrol Hysol MB-50, it's a semi-synthetic high oil content fluid. It has proved very successful for pretty much all the materials we cut here. But we also have a well developed coolant maintenance program. Speaking in broad generalities there are 3 types of cutting fluids used by most shops. Soluble oils, these have the highest oil content and have high lubricity and are typically good for heavy cuts and rust prevention. But they can have more trouble with bacterial growth, don't have the best cooling properties, and typically have the shortest tank life.
      Full Synthetics have no natural oils, so they are generally best for lighter cutting and are often the coolants most likely to rust your parts if you get the concentration wrong. But they do very well against bacteria, have good cooling and typically great tank life.
      Semi-Synthetics, like the Castrol we use here, generally strike a good balance between the properties of Soluble and Full Synthetic coolants. They have high enough lubricity for heavy cutting, decent cooling, good rust prevention, and good tank life.
      All of that said, however often your coolant is being used, it's important to keep the chemistry (concentration and alkalinity) correct and the coolant clean.
      If you have lots of chips in the tank and tramp oil sitting on the surface it makes it much easier for bacteria to get a grip on your coolant. The bacteria loves to eat the tramp oil that typically comes off oily parts and gets washed into the tank.

    Why is it forbidden to add a pure water into the coolant tank to dilute a mixture?

      Tap water can only be used to make a new batch when the tank is empty.
      If tap water is used for top up, the minerals that are added can build up, leading to high water hardness. This can ruin the coolant, cause rusting, and encourage bacterial growth.

      @@haasautomation Can this style of unit be used in-line (as in, without a DI water reservoir) to supply a Haas Coolant Refill System? I ask because the flow rates these these units advertise seem to be along the lines of "gallons per day" or "gallons per hour," not gallons per minute as I understand the Coolant Refill System requires.

    I wish my company would get with the program as far a coolants are concerned. The crap we use is awful. When you get out of your car in the parking lot, you can smell it. When you go home at the end of the day, whoa! People avoid standing near you. It's basically animal fat and water. Add in some way lube, leaked hydraulic oil, excess grease, chips, dirt and let it sit in the summer heat for a weekend...it would gag a maggot. It is a great lubricant for cutting, but this is 2015. There are better options.

    Nasty coolant is forcing me out of machine shops and has got me doctor visit sick more than once. I hate it. If it wasn't for that, I would enjoy machining. It is IMPOSSIBLE to find a machine shop in my area that is coolant responsible.

      jetpack5 i use a swils lahte wich uses oil as coolant its worse to work whit it gets everywhere but it wont rot
