I identify as an atheist and regularly use tarot as a tool of psychotherapy. I spent a year going under Internal Family Systems therapy (with a trained professional!) and I just happened to get into tarot at the same time. They both go swimmingly together! Tarot is great for "instigating" fresh internal dialogue.

I am also an atheist, and I have read tarot for that last three or four years or so. I have so far only read for myself. I often feel very lonely reading books or blogs about tarot, or listening to tarot podcasts, because very few of those sources speaks to someone who believes as I do. They all seem to assume a belief in the supernatural, the divine, astrology, magick, etc, and I don't. It's made me hesitant to reach out and join the community of readers, because I don't feel as though I fit in. So I was grateful to watch this today, because now I feel a little less alone than I did before. In particular, your description of feeling like a hypocrite with regards to both one's atheism and one's tarot practice resonated very clearly for me. Thank you very much for this video.

I recently discovered the truth of atheism. I’m so lucky to live in Austin Tx with such a hUge support here. The first Atheist Experience video I watch got me and I’ve been finding as much atheist community as I can since. But my first thought was “can I still be witchy?!”

I read my own cards as an atheist. For one, I love my deck it’s gorgeous. I also think that we have a lot in our own subconscious and they are just a tool to tap into that and to help bring things you really already know to the forefront.

Atheist here, who also loves tarot. I use it to meditate, to bring to the surface things that are bubbling around in my subconscious, or to help me think of creative solutions to problems. Sometimes the card that seems the most off-base or unrelated to the matter at hand is the one that prompts the most innovative solution. As for reading for other people, I've read for a couple of close friends but that's about it. I have six very different decks, and love holding these little works of art in my hands.

Glad I found your channel! I'm an atheist who was raised Christian, and I'm still working towards not thinking of things as evil just because some people told me they were evil. I had a friend a few years ago who would read tarot for our group, and that was my first experience with it. She took this sort of approach with the cards, using them as a tool to look at our lives in different ways rather than some demonic or spiritual force to affect our lives and futures. I've had a soft spot for tarot ever since, and I'm now trying to learn how to use it as an atheist, but it's so difficult to find resources that treat it as a meditative or therapeutic tool only. And yeah, I can sometimes feel like a fraud, even though I'm only doing this for myself. I know this video is a couple years old now, but I just wanted to say that I greatly appreciate your perspective on this!

Had a reading by a Catholic Mystic at a local store who has a very loyal clientele, talking about how I had the spirit of a dog I had once owned trying to reach me and keeping guard of me (I haven't had a dog that was "mine" since I was 8 and the dog only lived for about 3 months before dying of a severe infection, or so my parents said). She also did a lot of "confirming" and cold reading. She was also supposedly an Object Finger and told me my lost ring was under the sofa (it wasn't; I found it a week later, in the pocket of a pair of jeans in a laundry hamper that hadn't been touched in over a month). It was very cringe.

Wow, these are basically my exact thoughts about the tarot - especially the way the randomness of the cards forces you to consider a different perspective. That has been one of the most effective ways I've mentally approached difficult situations recently. I'm glad I'm not alone in doing tarot this way. 😊

I've started using a daily single card pull in the morning to help me think about the day to come and what I want for it, I think I have adhd and having a ritual to help me focus on goals and remember things is really helpful for centering my days and not feeling like they're floating by without me.
I think my funniest misreading was a palm reader at a friend's birthday party when I was like 9-- told me I'd marry a dark haired man and have three kids... turns out i'm a child-free lesbian

I am an atheist and I love reading tarot cards, but I’ll only do self readings. I never read for other people.
For me, it’s a cool, fun way to bring events and feelings from my past and present into perspective and using those to predict a possible outcome for the future. And since I am reading for myself, I can easily draw on my own experiences to make sense of the cards I draw. Of course, I don’t rely on them at all, but it’s enjoyable nonetheless and helps me focus when I’m feeling kind of lost.
I like to say the card that represents me is the Hermit. It’s one that speaks to me the most. One of my personal deities, to put it poetically. ✨

Yessss! I’m an atheist tarot enthusiast! I read for myself, friends, family, occasionally strangers. I try to be as up-front as possible that cards can really fit any scenario, but my job is to find the meaning that fits best, and stitch the cards together into a story to help clarify a situation. Because I make the process conversational, it can’t be considered “cold reading” because I’m not honing in and manipulating the querent. We just talk through what message is resonating with them see a situation or their options more clearly. Also it’s important to be very clear it’s “entertainment purposes only.”

So excited to have found your channel! I have been an atheist for a few years now, but am trying to find my witchy side again and have been using my tarot cards a lot lately. After pulling cards for a reading, I like to ask myself how I feel about the cards I pulled, what cards would I have prefered and why, and what messages in those cards can help me achieve my goals. I definitely don't believe they tell the future and don't buy into psychics, but tarot can be a great tool for personal reflection, journaling, and creative pursuits!

I do tarot read but always did them atheistic and I felt for energy which I imagine is my powers of observation lmao when i read for other people i told them im not telling their future that its a tool for self reflection and I always read them that way for myself to consider where these concepts fit into my situation and what I should consider to help me realize it or whatever so i think what you explain is spot on to how i read them. ☺

The consensus for a rigorous definition of atheism is that it is a belief claim, not a knowledge claim. An atheist is simply not convinced that the statement "It is the case that at least one god exists" is true. The knowledge claim aspect is a spectrum from agnosticism (uncertain) to gnosticism (certain).

I'm an atheist/secular witch and I read tarot, and I'd say maybe 50% of the time people I read for know I am an atheist / do not believe in the supernatural and I always feel conflicted because for me a lot of what makes tarot useful for people is to evaluate a reading through their own mental lens and find meaning for themselves. It's almost therapy in a way, and if that person is spiritually-inclined and doesn't ask if I am, I usually don't say anything because I feel it defeats the therapeutic/helpful aspects of my reading (also I put a lot of effort into piecing together the meanings to give a good reading and I'd hate for them to throw my effort out of the window by disregarding it.) I do have some friends who are adamantly spiritual and would be offended if I read for them knowing I don't believe in mysticism, so I of course wouldn't read for them out of respect for their beliefs. As an atheist I really enjoy the mental challenges of learning to read tarot and also like the therapeutic effects it has on me when i read for myself and others--I get to look at a situation under a different lens and I get to help people, and I've yet to get a reading "wrong" for others. Some people think I am really on the money, and that's always nice to hear because it means you've touched on something they really agree with and think about often and it allows them to feel seen and heard, even if you yourself don't know a lot about the specifics.

I'm an atheist myself who used to have major spiritual bias to metaphysics. People have always told me, even back when I did believe in things like deities and the supernatural, that my approach to things like Astrology, Tarot, Numerology, etc. was different from what they would expect from the usual psychic reader experience. One person even told me that I told them less about a mystical future and gave them instead more "food for thought", to which made realms more sense to me than anything else. Some people would even get mad at me because I would tell them how to take control of their own life and shape their own future instead of giving them some cryptic "Madame Zaza"-style prophecy.
But, I must admit I've always struggled with cold reading habits that I wasn't always aware of despite genuinely believing I was trying my best effort to be integrous. I still do readings for people today, because, like you, I too believe in modern era, secular uses for these practices. Things like meaningful coincidences and archetype are still very mindfulness-oriented concepts that can be supplemental to people in becoming self-empowered.

In my religious community, tarots is so badly seen associated with evil Jinns (spirits). welcome! I can totally relate to your community associating tarot with evil. I have a dear friend who has to excuse herself from the room when I break out my deck at a party so, out of respect, I don't do it near her. I agree that, even if you are a theist, you can use tarot in a purely phycological (not magical) way. I am upfront with my atheism not because I want to exclude people who are theist, but because I want to normalize it. Theists are skeptics too and I'm happy you enjoyed the video ❤️❤️❤️

@@SednaWoo thank you for the welcome! :) I wish I could show my religious friends your video but I think they would dismiss me because you're an atheist lmao. Some ppl just clench onto their beliefs and refuse to hear about other's even if it's not faith based. My clue is that they're insecure about their own ability to keep on believing and fear it so much, their fear becomes more powerful than their faith.
Also, I always say my friends I'm just reading by reading them first and analyzing their own behavior, and I read the card like I analyze a painting. But they still believe I have power of some sorts. But I think being a witch is about letting our own

I also think that religion takes disadvantage of man's spiritual needs.

Amazing as always...I use cards as a therapy tool and to get people brainstorming creative situations...my issue is that I was asked to do tarot by a believer and I don't want to disrespect their beliefs, or lie or anything...but I also want to help the person. Do you have any suggestions? I just think she needs to trust herself more and I don't want to make shit up to tell her that. I am highly intuitive in a non-superstitious way so I can probably make her feel like this is all legit but I am fundamentally against lying...at the same time, I know that faith can be part of what makes it work for them...like for some reason it's not enough that I am perceptive and good at reading emotions and I don't understand why they need to believe it's a message from some god or something.
