Day In The Life of a Medical OBGYN Coder | MY 5AM MORNING ROUTINE

  • Hey guys... I wanted to share another morning routine working from home. I have been coding since 2016 and I absolutely LOVE IT!! Best career choice for me and my family, I honestly couldn’t ask for a better job.
    I’ve been working from home full time since 2018. I also have a flexible schedule so I pretty much make up my own hours. However, I’m still an early riser because I like to get my day started early and finished early. I don’t think I could ever enjoy working 9-5. Just thinking about it has my mind scrambled because I’m so used to my routine of being done work by 2:00-3:00.
    I did not go to college for coding and I also didn’t take any courses prior to passing my CPC. My preferred method of studying was doing practice exams over and over and finding as much info as I could online. Amazon Kindle is an AMAZING app with hundreds of practice exams and coding tips. So, check them out on their app if you’re interested in medical coding.
    I achieved my CPC Certification through the AAPC. Currently, studying for the OBGYN Specialty Credential.
    Let me know if you have any other questions.
    Thank you all for watching 💕
    Make sure you like, comment & subscribe to see more!
    Xo,

      It depends on the company you work for. I believe Shamyra has a productivity goal of 20 charges per/hour. My company has a productivity goal of 35 charts per day (we are a multi-specialty inpatient and outpatient facility). So it just depends 🫶🏽 but coding is a GREAT career. It is not a job, but a career choice. So i recommend doing ALL the research you can before getting into it. But I ABSOLUTELY LOVE CODING. ❤

      I can’t remember if I mentioned taking the OBGYN Course in this video but it took me about 2-3 months to complete it but that’s only because I only logged on randomly. It’s only a 4 hour course 😂 but with working OB stuff everyday I didn’t feel the need to rush since I had a year to complete it.
      I have not taken any other courses related to coding. If you’re referring to how many hours I studied prior to taking the exam for my CPC - I’d say about 2-3 hours per day. But honestly I don’t remember it could’ve been less or more depending on the day. I was just really passionate about so I know I spent a good amount of time studying and doing practice exams.

      I’ve never been on AHIMA’s website but I know the AAPC has a CCS certification. I really don’t think it matters where you get certified from though.

    Totally off the subject. First of all thanks for the video, you have a very easy personality to be around and listen to.. I just wanted to say as someone who is a makeup artist and stylist for 30 years. U should use the witch hazel, I think that was the Thayers that you were using. It’s counter productive to apply over moisturizing. It should be first thing you apply after cleansing and everything else on top. Just saying, I wouldn’t want you to unknowingly dry your skin. .. :)
    P.s. if u want a pick me up moisturizing spray try one of the Mario Badescu sprays. They have cucumber and natural ingredients etc. also your hair looks amazing. Great job…;)

      Hi Adrienne! Aww that’s so sweet, thank you! I do you use witch hazel first (sometimes) before I apply my moisturizer and then use the Thayers whitch hazel as a refresher. It does refresh my skin I don’t get any drying effects from it. However, the Mario Badescu I did try and I got a slight rash from it witch is weird because it is natural. I haven't used it since and haven't had any problems with the ones I use now.

    I know you have your own schedule, but do you have like a set amount of accounts you have to do a day?? Are you like assigned patients? Or do you just work at your own pace?

    • @ShamyraC
      @ShamyraC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My quote I have to meet is 20 encounters per hour. Its not strictly coding 20 charts per hour because sometimes I have to enter missing charges and this number is included. Also, the denials that I have to review go into this 20/hr quote. So, I could code 5 charts, enter 10 missing charges, and review 5 denials to meet 20/hr if that makes sense.
      I’m assigned whatever my providers bill for in the hospital and I have to review their office procedures. When they dictate a note in the patients chart (that I have to review) the charge they select will come straight to me and I’ll review and choose the correct codes.
      I work at my own pace but have to make sure I’m meeting my quote 20/hr.

    Hi,what would you say is most challenging part of the Cpc test.

    • @ShamyraC
      @ShamyraC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For me it would be Time Management! Making sure you’re getting through I believe the ratio is 30 questions per hour. I can’t remember what was the most challenging pertaining to leveling an e&m.. maybe medical decision making was a bit more challenging. Especially now with the new 2021 e&m changes it’s even more challenging.
      I can’t exactly remember what on the CPC test was challenging because I took it 5 years ago. But I know time management was my biggest struggle to make sure I didn’t run out of time. My very first time taking the CPC I ran out of time but my second time I finished 30-45 min early and passed. My first time I only failed because I had to bubble in about 25 questions without even seeing the questions and I ended up with a 68%. You only need a 70% to pass! So, my retake I just knew I passed when I finished it.

      It was pretty easy because I already worked in the coding department at my job but I was a billing/insurance clerk. Plus I started out as an e&m (evaluation and management) coder first so I didn’t have to know how to code surgeries or procedures.
      It was a lot harder for me to move up to a surgical coder position because I didn’t have that background knowledge and the other applicants would but 4 years later I got the specialty OB/GYN that I wanted and the training has been great because I do it all from home. Other applicants prior to COVID had to train in the office for 6 months before being sent home. I literally felt like I had the red carpet service when I got this OB position because everything worked out perfectly.
