Wow that’s amazing that you did it with out any training. I had classes with my associates degree went back to get my BA in HIM then I started working as an inpatient apprentice coder at my facility and I took my CCS and passed. It was a LONG journey for me to finally get here where I’m a medical coder working from home! It’s a great career choice but it is not easy to get into and you are right if you are not into it don’t do it cause you won’t like it. Thank you great content!

Hi there, I’m just starting my journey. I want to work from home, or at least hybrid, because I’m a single parent. I’m signing up for online classes. I have my associates degree but I want to do this… I started a while back but I had to stop because of a medical issue. Sounds like a long process but with hard work, time and dedication it seems as if it’s totally possible. What I like about it is that the learning doesn’t stop, I don’t like dead end jobs. I like that this keeps going and one can pick an area or two to focus on.
Interesting video. I've worked for numerous MCO/ insurance companies over the past decade. I've worked in a few UM departments where we had to look at ICD 10 codes & CPT codes from face sheets. Luckily I get to work remotely as well.

I just got a certificate for Medical coding and I take my exam in a few weeks, but man I feel like I really didn't learn much...I mean I did as far as medical terminology and the basics of coding but there's so much we didn't learn so I guess if you can teach yourself from the ground up and I teach myself the rest!! Chiropractic billing was easy to learn. But this medical billing seems it would pay more. Then I viewed your day in a life video. Translating medical content to code is very interesting. Getting started is very easy because you’re not required to take a class to become a medical coder. I would visit the AAPC’s website to see what they have available to help you study for the CPC exam. The CPC certification is required to become medical coder. Check for online courses or courses in-person if that is your preferred style. Check for study gudies to help you study and research for practice exams as well. Getting certified is something you can do on your own but it would take serious dedication and motivation in order to do so. 😊
Good morning, I recently finished a medical coding cpc course through Udemy, but haven’t taken the exam yet. I have been watching a lot of your vlogs thank you so much for those. My question is should I start looking now for cpc or cpc-a jobs or wait until after I actually take and pass the exam first?
Could you do a video while you are coding E/Ms on records what information you pull out for each element in history, examination and medical decision making? For example "She used to be a smoker, that is a point for social history..." etc
@@KAM0327 oh no... my very first time I received a 65%. What I did was I purchased the practice exams the AAPC recommended that were my struggle areas. If you have the Amazon kindle unlimited where you can get practice exams for free. I would review a bunch of the free practice exams and pay close attention to the code range that you struggled the most in and read the rationales throughly so you understand. You were so close! Don’t give up! You can do it! 🤗😇

With my employer I started in food service. Then, made my way over to the coding department as a data entry clerk. After doing that for a year I wanted to become a coder and studied for a couple months and passed. I have a more detailed video on this I link it for you in case you haven’t seen it. 😉

I would search the hospitals in your area to see if they have a website where you can apply for jobs online. If you’re interested in a specific specialty let’s say OBGYN for example I would research offices/practices near you that are hiring for front office positions or POA (Physician Office Assistance). Also, see if those places have coding positions so it’s easier to transition into one when you already work for the company. Hope that makes sense.

When you work really hard to achieve something & don’t give up until you have it. If you give up on something then you couldn’t of been passionate about it.
If you took your test through the AAPC they should tell you the areas you didn’t do well in. That way you know what areas you need to study. Also, make sure you have good time management. Getting through the questions timely but making sure you have the right answer. I’d do more practice exams as much as you can prior to your retake. I hope this helps. 🤗 Wishing you the best.

When you speak on experience; I’m currently in an online program which they will prepare me for the exam n certification... will any of that count as a form of experience when applying for jobs?? Also what is the starting salary for most coders??
Thank you! When I think of experience I see it as you have knowledge of medical coding from working in a medical office/department or you’ve completed a course related to medical coding and have some type of certificate of completion or degree. To me both of those count as experience but the employer may ask if you have job experience and you could explain to them the experience you’ve had specifically in the medical field. Having some experience is better than no experience. 😊
I want to do medical coding but it doesn't seem to be a thing here in Jamaica even thou there is a school that offer the course they offer american certifications like CPC but I don't know any medical coder or even heard of anyone here who even wants one to hire a medical coder
I would reach out to the school that offers the coding courses and see if they can lead you in the right direction. If they’re teaching it they should be able to give information on places in your area that hire medical coders whether it be remote or in an actual office. Good luck on your journey! 🤗🌺

Hey, welcome to the coding world! I would just search online for short-term coding courses. I don’t know of any off the top of my head but I’m sure they’re out there. Hi so I've worked at a pediatrics office for 11 years went to school for Medical Assistant and got hired for that but then learned billing and have been billing for 7 years and now a office manager/billing manager/medical assistant that I still do. I feel like I need to take an online course or webinar to learn of all the new changes and where to look when their are new changes. What should I do? Where can I go to get more training?
Hi Diana! For online courses and webinars I always go to the AAPC’s website. You can google AAPC and their website should pop-up. They give a lot of information!! They’re definitely my go-to when I’m looking for education/knowlege on coding. 🙂

Hi Alicia! Did they give you a timeframe of how long you have to complete the course? If so, I’d use the deadline date and see how many chapters or lessons I need to complete per day or per week so I finish in time. You don’t want to rush through it. Take your time and make sure you’re understanding each section.
I have known one or two people in the past that used a teach yourself book and are now coders. We dont talk anymore but what book would anyone recommend?

Hi Shamyra, how do you respond to people who say on the internet that they can't find any job prospects? Before starting my medical coding journey, I purposely became a pharm tech because that was the easiest and free (in my state) way to get some kind of healthcare experience since I did not have any. Now I work from home for mail order pharmacy translating rxes. We do similar things to coding like having to meet certain metrics/rate/ doing research/ using resources provided to us since every single thing has to be input into the system a certain way, AND we get to attach icd 9 or 10 codes on prescriptions when the prescriber puts them on there. I am thinking about moving into prior auths within my company and hoping that these efforts are going to help me get my foot in the door with medical coding.
Im a pharmacy tech as well ? Which state are you in and is your company hiring ??? 😭 im about to start my coder classes in January and I would love to not have to go into the pharmacy anymore lol
It wouldn’t count as “work experience” but you should definitely have the course you completed on your resume. Anyone can sit for the exam without taking a course.
I’ve heard some employers giving people a timeframe to get their coding certificate. If they didn’t then they either moved to a different position within the company or decided to leave. Yes, you should have on the job training especially if you’re new to coding. 😊

Hey quick question I did the NHA certification for medical billing and coding specialist and I pass is there any advice concerning getting into the field.
Question I did a certification exam with NHA -National Healthcareer Association for certified Medical Billing and Coding Specialist I pass my exam but have no experience is there any advice where I can with this certification I know most places uses ahima and the others but is there any hope for me till I can do one of those other certification

So I went to school for a Certified Electronic Health Records specialist, just finished a couple days ago , but there was a small lesson that was about coding . Do you think after I work as a medical/health records clerk for a while eventually I could become a medical coder? Without actually going to school for medical coding, ?just taking what I learned in that small lesson and getting experience from working as a medical records clerk?
Wow! Congrats! That is awesome! 🍾 Definitely! The fact that you're already working in the medical/health records that should be an easy transition to coding within your same employer if they have coding positions available. If you don’t have your coding certification I would find out first what requirements your job has when it comes to coding. You never know they could hire you and give you a certain timeframe to get your certification. Don’t be afraid to ask! ☺️
There are multiple certifications. The first one most people get is the CPC. This is not a specialty certification but a core-credential. You can find other specialty certifications on AAPC website. I’ll provide the link for you. 😉 www.aapc.com/certification/specialty-credentials.aspx
I just found your channel as well and I am certified as medical biller coder for 7yrs, and I am and have been struggling to get a job in either medical billing, or coding to be honest I have given up on myself to the point where I have just been working. When you speak on experience; I’m currently in an online program which they will prepare me for the exam n certification... will any of that count as a form of experience when applying for jobs?? Also what is the starting salary for most coders??

When I think of experience I see it as you have knowledge of medical coding from working in a medical office/department or you’ve completed a course related to medical coding and have some type of certificate of completion or degree. To me both of those count as experience but the employer may ask if you have job experience and you could explain to them the experience you’ve had specifically in the medical field. Having some experience is better than no experience. 😊

I want to do medical coding but it doesn't seem to be a thing here in Jamaica even thou there is a school that offer the course they offer american certifications like CPC but I don't know any medical coder or even heard of anyone here who even wants one to hire a medical coder
I would reach out to the school that offers the coding courses and see if they can lead you in the right direction. If they’re teaching it they should be able to give information on places in your area that hire medical coders whether it be remote or in an actual office. Good luck on your journey! 🤗🌺
Hey I'm new to this medical coding, I really want to do it, however choosing a school is very daunting. What is the minimum amount of time to complete the course? I've seen schools offer 6 weeks program. Additionally I have a nursing background. Thanks for your help!
Hey, welcome to the coding world! I would just search online for short-term coding courses. I don’t know of any off the top of my head but I’m sure they’re out there. Hi so I've worked at a pediatrics office for 11 years went to school for Medical Assistant and got hired for that but then learned billing and have been billing for 7 years and now a office manager/billing manager/medical assistant that I still do. I feel like I need to take an online course or webinar to learn of all the new changes and where to look when their are new changes. What should I do? Where can I go to get more training?
Hi Diana! For online courses and webinars I always go to the AAPC’s website. You can google AAPC and their website should pop-up. They give a lot of information!! They’re definitely my go-to when I’m looking for education/knowlege on coding. 🙂

Hi Alicia! Did they give you a timeframe of how long you have to complete the course? If so, I’d use the deadline date and see how many chapters or lessons I need to complete per day or per week so I finish in time. You don’t want to rush through it. Take your time and make sure you’re understanding each section.

Hi Shamyra, how do you respond to people who say on the internet that they can't find any job prospects? Before starting my medical coding journey, I purposely became a pharm tech because that was the easiest and free (in my state) way to get some kind of healthcare experience since I did not have any. Now I work from home for mail order pharmacy translating rxes. We do similar things to coding like having to meet certain metrics/rate/ doing research/ using resources provided to us since every single thing has to be input into the system a certain way, AND we get to attach icd 9 or 10 codes on prescriptions when the prescriber puts them on there. I am thinking about moving into prior auths within my company and hoping that these efforts are going to help me get my foot in the door with medical coding.

It wouldn’t count as “work experience” but you should definitely have the course you completed on your resume. Anyone can sit for the exam without taking a course.

I’ve heard some employers giving people a timeframe to get their coding certificate. If they didn’t then they either moved to a different position within the company or decided to leave. Yes, you should have on the job training especially if you’re new to coding. 😊

I can’t exactly say for sure what your starting rate would be but it should be about $20/hr or more, depends on the employer and your location.

Question I did a certification exam with NHA -National Healthcareer Association for certified Medical Billing and Coding Specialist I pass my exam but have no experience is there any advice where I can with this certification I know most places uses ahima and the others but is there any hope for me till I can do one of those other certification

So I went to school for a Certified Electronic Health Records specialist, just finished a couple days ago , but there was a small lesson that was about coding . Do you think after I work as a medical/health records clerk for a while eventually I could become a medical coder? Without actually going to school for medical coding, ?just taking what I learned in that small lesson and getting experience from working as a medical records clerk?

The fact that you're already working in the medical/health records that should be an easy transition to coding within your same employer if they have coding positions available. If you don’t have your coding certification I would find out first what requirements your job has when it comes to coding. You never know they could hire you and give you a certain timeframe to get your certification. Don’t be afraid to ask! ☺️

There are multiple certifications. The first one most people get is the CPC. This is not a specialty certification but a core-credential. You can find other specialty certifications on AAPC website. I’ll provide the link for you. 😉

I just found your channel as well and I am certified as medical biller coder for 7yrs, and I am and have been struggling to get a job in either medical billing, or coding to be honest I have given up on myself to the point where I have just been working. I say all of that to say this. I am ready to put myself out there again and do some refreshers and continuous learning so that I am up to date. Thank you for the information and tips.
