I was shocked by the maryland gumbo comment. I mean, yeah we make fantastic gumbo, but we have soooooo many other things. we have really good cheesesteak subs, crabcakes/crabs, pitbeef sandwiches, oysters, ROCKFISH(!!!). no one ever mentions rockfish aka striped bass and it blows my mind; everyone I know is obsessed with rockfish. It's even our state fish. We love everything about it, especially getting to catch our own fish😊

Lobster used to be seen as below Rat Meat. There used to be laws against feeding prisoners lobster too many times a week because it was considered inhumane.
This isn't even that unusual either, it's happened several times through history. Something is cheap until the upper class want it, then the prices get jacked up so high that lower classes can't afford it anymore.

As a marylander i’d like to say that we do not claim her
University of Maryland literally sends you a crab mallet and a can of Old Bay when you get accepted there. Every single college in this state has a welcome crab feast. There's a crab or seafood place literally within walking distance in most places in this state. But sure. Our most famous food is gumbo.

They were fantastic. I had crab cakes for lunch and crab legs for dinner. I live in Kansas, so fresh seafood is a huge treat. If I get to visit again, I think I’ll probably still eat crabs instead of this mythical gumbo this lady spoke of.

Actually no. What's known as Mexican food is really an American invention, kind of like chicken tikka masala is actually very much British.
Even if that wasn't the case, it's not a stretch to think a place with as many Mexicans and better ingredients is going to have better renditions of the same foods than Mexico.

I think reason is Mexican food kind of adapted here like burritos. If you actually go to Mexico burritos is not a thing. But with many people who live in California who are Mexican I think the statement is true. I always go to my friend’s house and her grandma makes the best food or if you go to little taquerias are also very good.

Yes, pork tenderloin sandwich! The pork is pounded flat...then breaded in a special blend and deep-fat fried. Almost 3x bigger then the bun it’s on. Ketchup, mustard and a pickle. It’s absolutely unreal how good it is.

Best food I ever ate in all the states I've been to so far:
California: I was a baby, too young to remember :D
North Carolina: Mt. Olive pickles. I'm serious. You know the Mt. Olive brand? Well I lived in the place they were made. I lived in Mt. Olive for a year and I went to the pickle festival they have every year when I was 8.
Florida: We went to a hotel in Jacksonville on our way to Niceville where we were about to stay for 2 years. It was a resort next to the beach with a lot of water fountains and swimming areas. Easily the best breakfast buffet I ever had. I remember having a huge helping of fresh fruit, pancakes, and fruit pizza (pizza but rather than having cheese and tomato, it was cherries and cherry sauce).
Pennsylvania: We always visited my half-sister whenever we moved back and forth between the UK and America. I managed to get my hands on a Philly Cheesesteak while in Philadelphia. I have not regretted that decision one bit.

Isn't Virginia known for the best genuine ham in the country? Also, despite Maryland being better known for it, the Tidewater has excellent seafood, including steamed crabs. Old Dominion should get more love on the food thing.

As a Maine kid who lives in a seafood family and hates seafood entirely, I agree. You’ll never see me sitting down with a bib that was bright red and the tongs that we’d use would just be lobster claws.
But Maine is really messed up- we’re the only state with a dead animal on one of our license plates. If you observe it, there’s a lobster, but bright red. *Lobsters are dead and cooked at the color bright red.*
As Floridian, North Florida and South Florida are basically two different states. North is your traditional south, we are closer most southern things and Miami and Tampa are also a blend of American and pieces of the Caribbean

Melvin's and Bessinger's BBQ is so good! It's exclusive to Charleston but still ... shrimp and grits, obviously. Also "Lowcountry Boil" (aka Frogmore Stew)
PA definitely has cheesesteaks going for it, but we've got so many other iconic foods, both good and bad. PA has a huge German population including the Amish, so things like whoopee pies, shoefly pies, and any other Amish bakery staple are common. You've also got major snack corporations like Hershey's, Hanover, and Snyder's. 80% of the country's pretzels come out of PA. We've also got the weird Pennsylvania Dutch stuff like scraple, puddin (not the same as pudding, trust me), and cracklings. Plus large German and Irish populations give us iconic holiday meals such as corned beef and cabbage, pork and sauerkraut, and potroast.
