The Who are my favorite band, so I really enjoyed this retrospective. You included so many clips that I have never seen. Fantastic.

Great episode Jeff, what a loss for rock and roll. What a force they were live. I wish I could have seen them with Moon, unfortunately my first Who show was 1982 with Kenny Jones. That 1982 tour was billed as their "farewell tour"😃 This series has been awesome!

Thanks John! To see the Who live back in the prime years ‘69 - ‘73 would have been phenomenal.

It's cool to see Keith in the David Essex 1975 film Stardust as a member of his band The Stray Cats ! ( Dave Edmunds also in the band ). It's streaming.

Another great installment Jeff! Keith Moon used to be one of my all time favorite drummers at one point but has moved down that list a bit over the years. His style definitely helped shape the Who’s sound in the early years and contributed to them being one of the most exciting live acts ever during late 60’s through early 70’s era. But I think Pete grew more and more frustrated with him due to Keith’s limitations as a drummer when it came to Pete wanting to expand in his songwriting style. I really believe Pete was ready to fire Moon around the time he passed anyway. I guarantee there would have been a lot of “ghost” drummers appearing on any Who studio record after “Who Are You “ if Keith hadn’t died. Also it’s hard to get past Keith’s abuse to people around him when he was drunk, which unfortunately was all the time. He was a horrible person to people close to him, especially those who worked for him. His style was all energy and bravado which early on was a thing of beauty to behold. Unfortunately no one can keep that up.

Thanks Gary! I agree with your assessment of Moon. Not a good guy unless you were his drinking buddy. He flamed out well into what should have been his prime and was a shell of his former self by the time of Who Are You. The drinking had a lot to do with it but he also let his skills atrophy while the Who were on hiatus.

Another great episode Jeff! As a drummer for over 50 years, I grew up listening to the greatest drummers. Ringo, Ginger, Bonham and surprisingly Thom Mooney from Nazz. I like to think that these guys taught me to some extent. But ….can never get enough Keith Moon.🙂 👍🏻

Thanks! There is no one who compares to Keith for better or worse. One of the most energetic, uncompromising and unconventional drummers of all time.

Hi Jeff! Moon the Loon.....after Bonham, my fave rock drummer. Ringo and Charlie are tied for third. But yeah, Moonie's death was unfortunately among the least surprising moments in rock history. Great video once again!

Thanks John! I agree with all your drummer picks. Sadly he was living on borrowed time. A shell of the drummer he once was. In his prime there was no one better.

Another great video Jeff. I wont say Keith had the same impact on me as Michael Hutchence (I was 7 when he died) but the Who surely did. My brother gave me his copy of the Who By Numbers around the same time, and I’ve been a fan ever since.
    Thank you!

Thanks Morten! I was not a Who fan until well into my 30’s but now they are a top 20 band for me.

@@jeffwhitchervinyldestinati4486 They were fantastic. Watching a Split Enz documentary while I wait for a couple of new additions to my silly collecting of their vinyl albums. Funny you get the new album by a band (Crowded House) and it prompts you to go waaay back to the beginning 🤓

Hey Jeff! You nailed it when you said he is probably remembered more for his antics than his drumming, and that is my biggest problem with him. I'm sure he is one of those people that was hard to be friends with. I recognize his influence and importance in rock and roll history, but I've never had much sympathy for self-inflicted wounds. He doesn't even come to mind when I think of top 5 drummers. Always surprised me that a perfectionist like Townshend put up with it, especially the Cow Palace incident. Would've been interesting to see how long before Pete booted him had he not died. Cheers!

I think Keith would have gone the way of Brian Jones had he lived. Pretty sure Pete and Roger had a mind to fire him for being a liability both live and in the studio. A consummate fuck up.

Excellent episode as always Jeff. You really put a lot of work into these, finding all the obscure clips, etc. Looking forward to Steve Marriott. Maybe Tommy Bolin (if and when you ever have the time)! Thanks 👍

Hi Jeff!!! i think Keith's death was a tragedy waiting to happen.... i think he was a very important piece in the sound of the band in their early years, but as the sound of band was getting more and more complex don't know if his style would fit the vision Townsend had.... cheers and be well

Thanks Cristian! Unfortunately his skills deteriorated in the 70’s and he became less important to their overall sound. Cheers!

May I propose Sandy Denny as your next installment of 'R&R Casualties'... though, I must admit that to label the great Ms. Denny as a "rock-and-roll" artist is a bit misleading.

I love Keith Moon's drumming. He made The Who's songs explode out of my speakers. But I never much cared for him when he stepped out from behind the drum kit - and I'm not even referring to the stories of his abusive nature. I'm referring to seeing him in interviews and films. In interviews I found him insufferable much of the time; the guy who thinks he's being "wild and outrageous", but is really just annoying. As an actor, I only have one real film to reference - and you played a couple clips of it in your vid; that film being "Sextette". "Sextette" is one of my favorite "so bad it's good" films; it's a complete talent bomb - so many famous people in it, all of their performances terrible. But Keith is so freaking over the top, I once again find myself saying "Shut up, SHUT UP!" 😄His character is so annoying. Just look at that clip you played - "Wild silk. Wild silk! WILD WILD SILK!". Yeah, we get it Keith. Now, please shut up and drum. I can't imagine how Harry, Alice, Ringo, and Mickey could stand being around him so much; probably bc they were as drunk as he was.

Yes, he was one of those people who was constantly putting on an act. Shut up and drum! 😂 By the end he couldn’t even do that.

I became a drummer thanks to two people - Peter Criss and Keith Moon. I think Keith's behavior was tolerated by the guys in The Who because he was such an attention seeker and this drew in crowds early on. Later on when Keith lost his marbles each member wanted to go solo. The Who were the greatest live band in the history of Rock n Roll. Period.
You got sloppy stage hands around here Jeff!

Haha, yes I do. Live at Leeds and Live at Hull are evidence just how incredible a live band they were apt their peak.

Herr Moon's Chris Lambert accent was always unbearable.
