I said this on another channel that talked about self tanning, and I’ll say it again here.. I had an epiphany a couple weeks ago. I’ve been using self tanners off and on, and realized that I was spending money on something to change the colour of my skin tone, but really for what reason? I’ve never had an insecurity of my skin tone when I was born, but it’s what society has painted certain parts of the world to overtime. “You’re so pale, or you’re so white!” As if that was a bad thing lol. No matter where we are in the world or whatever your skin tone is, there is always a beauty standard we’re not following. Using self tanners is better than baking in the sun or worse going to a tanning bed, but we only get our skin this one time. Maybe we should just start respecting it more by protecting and refining it rather than changing it :) Have a great day whoever is reading❤️
I've always found self-tanner odd as a dark skinned person myself. I understand that being "tan" is seen as healthy but as a POC I've just always found it bizarre that a natural skin color I was born with and others, has been the source of derision and bigotry but here you have folks who don't necessarily have to experience that willingly making themselves darker because of some arbitrary beauty standard. Humans are weird.
I like to use self tanner because it helps hide any marks or scars on my face. I don’t go super dark just a subtle hint of color and I find it really evens out my skin tone. My favorite is the Jergens face lotion with spf in light\medium. Game changer!
I'm a fitness competitor and sunless tanners ARE a requirement - this is definitely correct. 🙂 They were also one of the few things that helped me feel confident when I had cystic acne (pre-Spironolactone) and a very tight budget. Thank you for making this, Dr. Dray!!!
I just counted my self-tanners from past year: 21 different products. And why?! Because it is supposedly undesirable to be pale. WTF? So is there any skin colour in the world that is desirable? Everyone wants to change. Me - no more! I was shamed for my colour for years and I never personally disliked it. Now, at age 27 it's finally time to accept myself. Edit: I will say, that I appreciate that fake tan covers stretch marks and scars very well, but it is sad that these are not normalised. Most of people have imperfect skin.
That's just not true. Very pale skin and very dark skin are not found as attractive as the entire range of skin colours in the middle. That's just fact from every single preference study that has been done in the last century. There will always be people who find these tones attractive, but not the majority right now.
@@BuffyunaTV even that's not true. Pale skin is the preference, but not *the palest* skin. I have the palest skin in the world. Like it's not possible to have lighter skin than me. When you have an extreme skin colour, it gets remarked on ALL the time. Strangers have no problem commenting on my skin at all or wouldn't be unusual for multiple people to remark on it in a single shop! And it's never, ever a good thing. I can't imagine having to deal with both beauty ideals and racism as those with the darkest skin do in so much of the world.
Thank the lord!! 🥳🙌🏻 as a self Tanner addict I watched a video from a fellow ‘dermatologist’ that gave me the fear as she insisted ‘self tan is literally the same as toasting your skin and will age you’ this video has taken away that fear so thank you! Long live self Tanner 🤘🏻
Very intelligent. Genuinely impressed with how you delivered this succinct, comprehensive and logical position. As a suggestion, your skillset would be valuable as a material witness in relevant cases.
You've enlightened me on many levels Dr Dray. Thank you. I watch a few other derm channels but hands down, you are my #1. You've instilled trust and confidence at a time when we are bombarded with misleading and outright false information. My late husband was a scientist/patent attorney who used to say "the devils is in the details". When I hear you say this, it puts a smile on my face. He'd wholeheartedly agree! xo

The way Dr.Drey tells us where DHA originated from is just legendary Dr Drey style& why we are here. These videos are more like classes by experts better than most classes in unis. Thanks Dr Drey
I’m really excited you posted this. There’s another dermatologist here on youtube who recently posted a video about this topic too. However, they claimed that fake tanning DOES accelerate aging due to the formation of free radicals. Now I feel a bit conflicted, but I’m hoping this video was a discrete way of putting out more correct information 😅
I don't know if this is more correct... I guess they both interpreted the research differently. Also there isn't enough research on this so we have no way to know for sure. I trust Dr. Shereen's opinion personally. She was the first one on TH-cam to warn that hyaluronic acid could dry out skin while everyone used to act like it was the best thing ever for dry skin. She knows her stuff
@@Sophya7 They are both very intelligent doctors. However, I feel more confident in trusting Dr. Dray’s analysis on this subject as she is not only an MD, but also has her PhD which would offer her more reliable research interpretation skills. Dr. Shereen is amazing as well and I love her videos. I just think there’s a reason the research was analyzed differently between both derms, as one of them has further educational credentials. I also assume that’s likely why Dr. Dray subtly posted this video after Dr. Shereen posted hers.
I believe Dr. Dray also has a PhD in another area other than her MD in dermatology. If I am remembering correctly she will have a strong background in research and would be able to pick apart these types of studies to offer the best information. She wouldn’t take the study results at face value. I am not sure what kind of educational background the other dermatologist has.
I watch and listen to both of them. I think we all take responsibility for our own health and should make our own judgments. Certainly, I don't think you should listen to anyone 100% and only do as they say. I'm sure both Dr Dray and Dr Idriss would agree it's our choice to make.
They also have opposite views on vitamin C. 🙂 It's one of the reasons why I watch them both! They are both highly knowledgeable, so I think it's important to diversify your teachers, so the speak, and then draw your own conclusions of risk vs benefit. However, Dr. Idriss still uses self tanners!
Thank you for this - I saw a different video recently that left me a bit confused, but as someone who is not a dermatologist, I didn’t quite feel in a place to question some elements of it. So, thank you for giving us your professional opinion. I’m not an avid self-tanner - just a bit of gradual tan every so often for some added glow (not anything dramatic) - but I know so many people who used to use sun beds who now use these products instead. I’m glad they seem to be safe to all intents and purposes!
"My job as a dermatologist is not to oppose my beliefs on people, but to help them make informed decisions for their health." 👏👏👏 Thank you so much for these videos, these have been so helpful, thank you, thank you, thank you!
I love this video! When I started learning more about skincare, I started wearing SPF in everyday life (as opposed to just when I'm at the beach or pool). But I really missed having the look of slightly bronzed up skin. My skin can get really pale to the point of veins being clearly visible, so I feel like I just look healthier when I have a tan of some kind. When you said that DHA in combination with sunscreen could benefit the skin, I was like "Say no more!!" 😎
I have used St Tropez sunless tanner. Worked wonderful, no orange tone. I haven't been in the sun at all in over 30 years. Also a 13-yr melanoma survivor. I totally embrace my lilly-white wrinkle-free skin at 62 years old. I have family members that still sit in the sun, and their sun damage is pretty bad (they are younger than me). They should have just stuck with sunless tanner!
Fascinating! Just discovered your videos…love the background/history of DHA, LOVED how you explain the mechanism in which it works on the skin! So interesting
Thank you Dr Dray! Also for your fans who may have watched Dr. Shereene Idriss vid about DHA, she stated in her video that she recommends self tanners as long as they are used in moderation.
It's still something she herself uses and recommends so she was seemingly hinting at small studies and possible aging. It doesn't seem to be definitive.
I wouldn't say "completely opposite", she just has the opinion that the generated free radicals can potentially age the skin but for that recommends using an antioxidant, she still uses one and recommends her faves, so it's not really THAT different.
This was a great video! I do use sunless tanner in the summer because I don’t get a tan from the sun and I like the look of tan skin in the summer. Even though I use the tanning products my sunscreen is the last product that I use. I have had 2 spots that were pre cancer and one was on my face so I apply sunscreen everyday even if I have no plans to go outside. Thanks 😊 I love the nail polish.
Yes!! Thank you for saying this! It’s not just the tan/colour! I have KP and I find tanning helps disguise the bumps and redness.. it’s a confidence thing
I am a very very pale woman, and people often make fun of me because Im milk-white. I tried everything to look tanned, even tanning injections (very bad and dumb decision). I stopped with spray tan and now I accept the colour nature gave me. Btw I look 20 years younger and in some asian countries people would kill to have my skin colour. I also realized that milky white skin looks so beautiful with red nails.
Just be yourself! Imagine either giving that money away to charity, that you would have spent on self tanning products, or keeping it yourself, and using it for things you enjoy. Imagine the time you are saving too!
The information you share and the way you speak is just…..wow. You are so smart and I love that you distill the impressive amount of information you have for us in a usable way. Thank you!
Thank you Doctor for this video. Your knowledge and professionalism is very appreciated. It's a pleasure to watch and listen to a professionalist who is sharing own knowledge with the rest of the people.
Hi this was really interesting. I have always thought self tans were really "anti aging", as those who use them would otherwise perhaps want a "real" sun induced tan. Fake tans are far healthier for the skin than a "real" tan after all. I'm a fitzpatrick one and don't tan either fake or real. I hide from the sun with hats, spf and sunglasses. I tried the fake tans a couple of times in my early twenties and I don't seem to have enough pigment in my skin, as they don't work on me. The guide colour washes off and I'm still white underneath (various brands were tried). I long ago accepted being ultra pale and have no need to be "tanned". I still get asked "did you go?" after a holiday, have been approached whilst on holiday to see if I am albino (asked if my eyes are pink - they're not they're grey) and overall without blush asked "are you feeling ok?" more times than I can count. Foundation companies barely seem to know this skintone exists and their lightest shades are not anywhere near light enough usually. This is the case for the lightest and darkest tones of skin regarding foundations and an issue the beauty community likes to ignore. Those who have around sixty shades need to be more celebrated, to encourage the acknowledgement of diversity of skin shades more. Western culture seems to be obsessed with being tanned and Eastern cultures want to be lighter - we all want what we don't have i guess lol. I found the possible UVA protective aspect really interesting and although not tempted to again try fake tans, do feel it will encourage others to do so. If it does then that's perhaps a good thing. Best wishes.
I feel your struggle, my daughter has a light skin color as well and none of the tinted mineral sunscreens ever match her! Unfortunately though, the untinted mineral sunscreens still leave her with a white cast :( Are you using any tinted mineral sunscreens that you found that they match with your skin tone? Can you give any recommendations?
@@gobbledygoook Sorry no I use an untinted spf and a foundation or other complexion product. I often use a white mixer in my complexion products, but that's not an answer for spf, as it would interrupt the film forming ability. My best foundation match is lancome teint idole in shade 008/091. Others that look ok are mac F&B in C1, too faced born this way in cloud and revolution in shade 005 or 001. I hope that helps. For a tinted moisturiser bare minerals complexion rescue in opal mixed with a few drops of white mixer works well. Korean bb creams are not light enough - shade #13 needs a lot of white mixer and shade #11 is very unusual to see in any line from them. most affordable brands do not cater for a wide spectrum of shades, so I am prepared to pay a bit extra for a good match. I use the laura gellor balance n brighten in porcelain for a light evening of skintone and to distract from the white cast of spf, without a very makeup look in a quick/light layer for a minimal makeup day. there you go - my tricks for hiding the white cast. I hope something in that lot works for your daughter too.
I’m a Fitzpatrick one as well! So I’ve had similar struggles with makeup. Recently I found that Tarte’s lightest concealer is a perfect match for me :) maybe if you’re interested they’d be worth checking out.
@@Alison-jp1bk Thanks I've tried tarte and it's a decent match, but the Dior forever concealer in shade 00 is perfection for me and might be worth a look lol for you. It's a bit cooler toned than the tarte, which matches my skin better.
I searched this topic the other day and today you make a video. Do you see what people search for and then make a video? I have no idea how but I love you for it❤️
It’s been my experience that hormones age skin quicker than anything-even the sun. I’ve never seen anyone who has had hormonal changes not have it show up on the face/neck. All of my friends who have had hysterectomies aged literally in months.
I have stopped tanning for probably 5 years now and that includes fake tanning. I have learned to appreciate being pale Snd that tanning will always be a life long process
Personally I have olive mediterranean skin but am naturally quite pale, and the result is just a bit of a sickly looking green color, I have no pink or orange undertones and just look a bit dead, plus my dark undereyes look so intense and stark by contrast - but in the summer (before I wore sunscreen) my skin would always turn this beautiful deep olive golden hue and my undereyes wouldn't look so intense by comparison, and I just miss that. I know technically my skintone is pale, but my ancestors all lived and worked in the sun and were always tan and so my paleness just doesn't feel like my "real" skin color if that makes sense, at least not in the summer. Plus, having grown up pretty far from where I'm from, looking more like my family there makes me feel connected to them. It's been 5 years of consistent sunscreen use and I'm the palest I've ever been, so now I just use gradual self-tan in the summer and it helps. I know opinions may vary, but it has eased the transition from no SPF to daily use of it tremendously, and for the moment it suits me well.
I’m actually really surprised by this video. Dr. Shereene Idriss recently did a video on this topic too and said fake tanning does age the skin 😮 so it’s interesting to see two professionals in the field of skincare disagreeing on this topic.
Well, dermatologists are not actually trained in skincare. Dr Paul Jarrod Frank discussed about this with Dr Sheerene Idriss on his podcast. They're not that different from those self-taught skincare gurus.
@@PassionPno They are pretty different in having the extensive background in their field, research and being able to asess research papers critically, afterall it is kind of part of the job to improve your knowledge during your whole career, medschool and residency just gives you the tools to be able to do that.
@@KristyMills I have used sun tanning lotions from my teen years 15 yers plus. My skin look very good on my body no damage . And i do not stay in the sun or take sunbad.
I have a job where I work outside 8-10 hours a day (often at elevation), and I do my best to be vigilant with sunscreen and always wear full covering clothing/hats--but trust me, your hands/lower arms will STILL get darker than anywhere else on your body (particularly the legs!). Came here to see if wearing sunless tanner would have ill effects with my job, pleased to learn it'll actually maybe help!

Hi Dr.Dray! Thank you for posting this video. I have one question. Can I use tretinoin while using self tanner on my face? I really hope you can answer this. Thank you in advance ❤❤❤ love your channel.
Another interesting pos-thanks! I live in the northeast- would you comment in an upcoming post about UVA skin penetration in the winter v. summer months? I am often outdoors, always use sunscreen but not a sun hat except in the summer months.
Love your earrings Dr. Gray! They remind me of glistening snow and liquid droplets of gold 😄 and thank you so much for your amazing skin advice as usual that helps bust all these skincare myths! I know I can always rely on your channel for solid, science backed advice on skin 😊🥰
Hey Dr. Dray! Love your videos. Would you be able to speak on scalp micro-pigmentation? There isn’t a lot of information about it online. Would appreciate it!
That's interesting about peroxide causing free radicals to form. I used various spot treatments in the 80s (and beyond) particularly on my chin, and I now have some deep lines on my chin. The area looks older than the rest of my skin.
There are different types of peroxides. If you let us know which type and what strength you used on your skin, someone with a chemistry degree may find the time to explain the differences in simple terms, so that there is no confusion about what is safe to use on the skin. 👱♀️❤
I used tons of benzoyl peroxide all over my face in my youth and people usually think I'm 10 (sometimes more) years younger, so I'm not sure that holds up across the board.
Very interesting. I hope you’re closer to the truth on this than Dr. Idris, who just released a video with contradicting info. She said sunless tanners do slightly promote skin aging.
I think her gist was that very small studies hinted that maybe perhaps and might ....but she still does it and recommended her faves...so no real contradiction here
@@juneszeider5280 no shereen made it pretty obvious in her video, even banging on the table as she said it: "Self tanners cause age your skin" and kept emphasizing how true this fact is multiple times in the video
Oooo ... those beautiful earrings? Is there a link for those? Thank you for this video, because it's been confusing to figure out whether self-tanning is harmful in any way, or not.
I found this very informative and interesting. It got me thinking. I use vitamin patches since I had bariatric surgery. I just can't stomach taking all of those vitamins. My blood work seems to confirm that the vitamins are being absorbed. If sunless tanner doesn't go into the deeper layers of the skin, how do vitamin and medication patches work. What about topical medication like muscle rubs?
Great informative video!!! I had this question for so long. I stopped using self-tanner on my face since I felt might age my face. But that most importantly had been afraid that my serums (vitamin C, etc)or devices might not have the same effect. Wish I could find that answer. I just started using the Droplette, this would be a good question to ask, if self-tannner would prevent the mist of tis device to penetrate the skin.
Seems to be a much better alternative than baking oneself in the sun ☀️ I used a tanning bed a few years during my ignorance to skin damage period of life but sense then I have seen the light and not the light that was baking my skin! 👍🏻 Great earrings and topic!! ☕️💃🏻🍁⭐️
" DHA offers UVA (not UVB) protection " , nice - you sold me on that. anecdotally speaking I do notice that DHA does make my freckles much more prominent.
In the '90s, I used George Hamiton's sunless tanner from his Beverly Hills Shop. It may have been the first sunless-tanner to not streak and would last for weeks.
@@DrDrayzday Good question! It may have been called the "George Hamilton Skin Care System." While bottles with brown and gold labels. He also had a cigar shop off Rodeo Drive - maybe he not such a good advocate for cancer protection. lol
Thank you for the information. I've read on pubmed that DHA does get absorbed into the layers of the skin and into the bloodstream however. In my humbled opinion, I would still stay away from it due to the studies that show its potential to cause aging and free radicals, although they are not conclusive.
When i was little i had rickets. My mom used to let me sleep next to the window and I was cured. Conclusions: Short sessions of UVB or UVAB radiation with the same vitamin D-weighted exposure increased 25(OH)D levels. The UVA dose does not influence 25(OH)D levels under short exposure times. However, there was a significantly lower increase of 25(OH)D levels during longer UVA irradiation (≥9 min).
Happy Wednesday Dr Dray!Interesting topic. I have noticed that as I am aging when I apply self tanner in the summer it does attached to the various solar lentigos I have acquired. I thought that was interesting.

True
@@cabaelz not in Asian countries.
I feel the same way, it is so much work as well! but i feel so much more confident when i am tanned
They actually said it’s the same as toasting your skin?
@@masonklein Yep. With a pop up cartoon of a toaster 🙄
Drop video link lolz
whoever said that is ridiculous because toasting ur skin causes CANCER, self tanner does not give the same effects💀
Yes I saw it too… freaked me out. Glad I came across this one.
Very intelligent. Genuinely impressed with how you delivered this succinct, comprehensive and logical position.
As a suggestion, your skillset would be valuable as a material witness in relevant cases.
Just love all the studies you cite in your videos. There is so much misinformation that gets voiced and nothing to back up the claims
He'd wholeheartedly agree! xo
You are effing amazing what you have taught me ..omg my skin looks like a 30 yearl old

Omg I look better at 59 than I did at 30 and your drug store /Walmart shopping just reaches real people ...you are a beautiful star in the night sky..u are so real and beautiful..don't sell your soul caus you made a 59 year old have gorgeous skin ..I love you ❤️ 😍
The way Dr.Drey tells us where DHA originated from is just legendary Dr Drey style& why we are here. These videos are more like classes by experts better than most classes in unis. Thanks Dr Drey
In many parts of Asia we would say, "she's so fair and beautiful". Often heard would also be, "she's so pretty... BUT what a pity she's not fair".
It's true in the middle east as well
I’m really excited you posted this. There’s another dermatologist here on youtube who recently posted a video about this topic too. However, they claimed that fake tanning DOES accelerate aging due to the formation of free radicals. Now I feel a bit conflicted, but I’m hoping this video was a discrete way of putting out more correct information 😅
Dr. Shereen?
@@TrangPhamNguyen Yes! Love her channel though.
yeah that's why I'm team appreciating my own skin color. you don't have to think much. so much life comfort 😀
Saw Dr. Shereene Idriss's video about it a couple of days ago... Incredible how two dermatologists share two complete opposite views about DHA 🤯
Yes I was thinking the same thing lol I’m so confused
Same as soon as I saw her video I wanted to know Dr Drays thoughts😆 I don’t actually use it often but interesting to see their different opinions.
"My job as a dermatologist is not to oppose my beliefs on people, but to help them make informed decisions for their health." 👏👏👏
Thank you so much for these videos, these have been so helpful, thank you, thank you, thank you!

I'm about halfway through the video and what I'm hearing is self tanner is good for you 😂 love how informational your videos are ❤️
thanks for watching
@@DrDrayzday Informative vid Dr dray really what I needed to know! One question though. Is spray tanning toxic? Thanks!
Literally the best channel on youtube

Fascinating! Just discovered your videos…love the background/history of DHA, LOVED how you explain the mechanism in which it works on the skin! So interesting
We would love your new winter skin care/body care fav products, please!!!!
Well this is GREAT news! Thanks so much Dr. Dray! ♡
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, doctor. Your commitment and passion for what you do is amazing.
Thank you Dr Dray! Also for your fans who may have watched Dr. Shereene Idriss vid about DHA, she stated in her video that she recommends self tanners as long as they are used in moderation.
For folks who want self-tanner recommendations and how to apply, Dr Idriss put up a video recently about it.
Greetings d b hope u r well n Happy Wednesday😀👍💜….
Omg! I literally DMd Dr dray YESTERDAY about this and she has a video up already!
Did anybody see Dr. Shareene Idriss’s video? She has a completely opposite view on sunless tanner.
Yes! I’m so confused lol
What a great professional is Dr Day!
I absolutely love her videos and I surely learn alot from her 💝
Yes!! Thank you for saying this! It’s not just the tan/colour! I have KP and I find tanning helps disguise the bumps and redness.. it’s a confidence thing
I have kp to and my legs look SO much better with fake tan, i swear fake tan helps the bumps go away to
I am a very very pale woman, and people often make fun of me because Im milk-white.
Imagine the time you are saving too!
i feel like my tuition payments should be going to you because i learn so much
Dr. Dray, you look so pretty with your ear rings.
Yes the shopping videos are fun. But this is why i subscribed. Well done!
The information you share and the way you speak is just…..wow. You are so smart and I love that you distill the impressive amount of information you have for us in a usable way. Thank you!
Great explanation and info. Thank you for always being clear so that nonscience people can understand.
Unfortunately though, the untinted mineral sunscreens still leave her with a white cast :(
Are you using any tinted mineral sunscreens that you found that they match with your skin tone?
Thank you so much for this, been waiting on an educational video from you about self tanners for a while!
Thanks for watching

Great information. I always appreciate your down-to-earth scientific explanations and keeping an informed and objective view.
You're a godsend Dr.! Thank you for yet another great video!! 💐
I have been wondering this forever. Thanks for answering it!
I searched this topic the other day and today you make a video. Do you see what people search for and then make a video? I have no idea how but I love you for it❤️
It's surely still better than sun exposure or tanning beds
The UVA protection possibility is very interesting, thanks for this video!
Still the best dermatologist on TH-cam!
Dr Dray you the GOAT!
I have seen it to. I was so sad since i use it regulary. Feel better now😅

I've never used a self tanner but this is great information to have. Thank you, Dr Dray. Happy Wednesday! I hope you have a fabulous evening. 💟

Hey Dr. Dray! Love your videos. Would you be able to speak on scalp micro-pigmentation? There isn’t a lot of information about it online. Would appreciate it!
Love your earrings and the info. on sunless tanners. I have been using them for years
That's interesting about peroxide causing free radicals to form.
Would it be a good idea to apply a Q10 serum (or niacinamide) before self-tanning?
I’m very happy with my skin colour as is. Happy to report, no tan lines at all, one shade, from head to toe. 😂
Seems to be a much better alternative than baking oneself in the sun ☀️ I used a tanning bed a few years during my ignorance to skin damage period of life but sense then I have seen the light and not the light that was baking my skin! 👍🏻 Great earrings and topic!! ☕️💃🏻🍁⭐️

@@DrDrayzday Good question! It may have been called the "George Hamilton Skin Care System." While bottles with brown and gold labels. He also had a cigar shop off Rodeo Drive - maybe he not such a good advocate for cancer protection. lol
Really helpful, thank you! Safe way to have a tan if you enjoy the look of it (I certainly do!)
Thank you for the information. I've read on pubmed that DHA does get absorbed into the layers of the skin and into the bloodstream however. In my humbled opinion, I would still stay away from it due to the studies that show its potential to cause aging and free radicals, although they are not conclusive.
Where did you find these studies, if you don’t mind me asking?
Dr Dray is the best
Happy Wednesday
