Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni holds first address, distancing herself from fascism | DW News

  • Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni addressed parliament on Tuesday for the first time since she got the job. Meloni, the leader of the post-fascist Brothers of Italy party, has formed the country's most right-wing government since Benito Mussolini.
On Tuesday, in an apparent bid to reassure Western allies, Meloni sought to distance herself from fascism. "I have never felt any sympathy or closeness to anti-democratic regimes... fascism included," Meloni told lawmakers.
She vowed to fight "any form of racism, antisemitism, political violence [and] discrimination."
Meloni has been keen on moving her party from the political fringes. Ahead of the election campaign, she apparently sent out internal memos to party groups instructing them to refrain from making extreme statements and references to fascism.
Still, concern has grown in Italy and among its neighbors over civil rights, as well as Rome's involvement in alliances like NATO.

What I've learned in the years is with leaders is simply by not focusing much what they say, but what actions they take.
Actions weight more merit of a few words.

Her opponents called her a far right politician, but she is actually more moderate than the USA republicans, and in line withe UK conservatives of the past (not the mad bunch of today). She has conservative values, want to balance the budget, want to stop illegal immigrants, want to stay in the EU and Nato. All things that were in her manifesto before the elections.

Italy is a net CONTRIBUTOR to the EU (and also the UN), and yet the EU treats Italy as a beggar whenever it asks for investment funds. It should also be noted that the average Italian has less debt and is more likely to own their own home than the average citizen in even some of the most "advanced" EU nations. Respect Italy.

Oh yeah, and of course the flame on the flag, we all know what it is. It's there to gain votes from the far right.
Our far left parties have cut ties with communist regimes a long time ago, and never looked back. In fact, as you can see, Putin corrupted right wing parties in Italy, not the left.
Lastly, the far left is not represented at all in our Parliament, and that has been the case in the last (I think) 20-ish years. And even then its leader (Fausto Bertinotti) wasn't particularly known to have ties with or expressed admiration for criminals, terrorist groups and foreign regimes (as for instance Salvini and Berlusconi did, repeatedly)

Gerhard Schröder is a social democrat and the best thing that happened to Putin geopolitically. It's funny that you say that an alleged sympathizer for Mussolini fascism would in any way run risk to be a supporter of Russia, given that it would have been in Mussolini's interest to destroy the "Bolchevists" that are "denazifying" Ukraine.

  • @Mahbu

The problem with immigration is. . . walls and turning away ships or locking up people, at best you're treating a symptom. You're not fixing the problem.
The problem is whatever is causing people to flee/emigrate/seek asylum in the first place. Poverty, war, authoritarianism, environmental catastrophes. Instability.
Americans complain, for instance, about all the illegal immigrants fleeing to the US but have done very little to treat the cause. In some cases, the US even made it worse. The US has a history of initiating coups, violent or otherwise, in Central and South America. For a while there such was our fear of "communism" and "socialism" that we'd prop up brutal rightwing dictators just to squash otherwise peaceful socialist movements. The other issue is the US war on drugs, that abysmal failure that helped fuel the growth of Cartels. Cartels who caused significant violence, corruption, and instability.
Africa is in a similar situation. The exploitation of imperialism and colonial powers has done far reaching and long lasting damage, exacerbating existing factionalism and corruption. Not to mention the disastrous dual wars in Afghanistan and Iraq that destabilized a whole region.

Exactly. If the UN decides to take seriously the hundreds of human rights violation petitions that have been submitted to our in the past few years, these countries would've been able to fix themselves but the reverse is the case. Secretary of state Blinken recently visited Nigeria and called it "a country that practices religious freedom" (a political statement meant to please the govt despite the abuses of Shiites for years) but the reality is a few weeks later terrorists masscred hundreds in a church in ondo- terrorists that had been funded and enabled by the Nigerian government. Cameroon President has been suppressing Ambazonians for years, not a single word about it from France despite petitions. These are just 2 out of several.

You talk about "not taking responsibility" but that's EXACTLY what you're doing.
Not taking responsibility for the cause and effect.

@@wolfswinkel8906 UN is interested in staying in lockstep with the WEF and the banks are seemingly dictating all these “ financial crises” worldwide. It’s all for a power grab and that is one of the most dangerous, catastrophic things in the world. Until those that have committed intentional destruction of countries through economic manipulation, are brought to justice, the peoples will never have peace.

You raise good points on your post, about solving the problem at origin.
      I would and something more:
one of biggest blunders of Europe’s image and marketing is the image everything is gold and rosy in Europe.
It is not actually, there are pockets of poverty in Europe equal to 3rd world countries and many europeans are trapped in it, and immigrants are bound to end up there (exception are those Golden Visa immigrants). *This* is the illusion all those immigrants have of Europe.
