This guy was using a mix of bajiquan and piguaquan. Bajiquan is all elbows and close range fighting. Piguaquan is long range fighting with your hands outstretched (those of you who saw the final battle in The Matrix: Revolution saw Neo take the same Piguaquan stance this guy takes at 0:56).
They were originally one style, then they got split into 2 separate styles.

I've heard that they are originally different styles and eventually one master who practices both styles decided to merge them into the "new" Bajiquan.

But its main Focus is Short Range thats Correct. Baji is also known as Bodyguard Style this Style of Wushu has no limits! And many traditional

Baji and Pigua were once one style, and even after they split most people who practise one style also use the other. A lot of forms or moves labeled as baji will actually be partially pigua, because many people will tell you that baji is incomplete without pigua and vice versa.

Bajiquan (Eight Extremities Fist) is one the most lethal Quan Fa styles around. It is known as the “bodyguard style” due to its efficiency, proficiency and viciousness, and it is still used by Presidential bodyguards in Taiwan and China to this day. This scene from The Grand Master is truly amazing and, although a bit stylized and heavily dramatized, it showcases the style´s brutality. I have been truly fortunate enough to train in Bajiquan and I can attest to its formidable power.

Its also one of the few Chinese martial arts to have the capacity and ferocity to go up against another very well known martial art that's been very overrated over the years since the early 2005s, Muay Thai.

    • @joshuaamadeusishak1887
      @joshuaamadeusishak1887 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

The guy in the video also used Piguaquan, a style of kung fu that focused on long range attacks using extended arms like using a whip. He even used a Piguaquan's stance halfway. It is usually used in combination or practiced together with Bajiquan which focused on close range attacks using elbows and knees to deliver powerful attacks in the shortest time and distance as possible.

    • @MPT-io8ml

Wentao Feng Bajiquan mainly uses the Elbows and the Knees, because they are tough and hard naturally and you don't need to train your body for Bajiquan. It hurts because it uses techniques that counter the enemy's punch. They aim the rib and many vital points and sometimes can be extremely deadly.

edison7300037 It's true that bajiquan is the martial art that often use by bodyguards in China, even both the bodyguard of Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek practice this art.
But, for the lucky ones bajiquan master who survived, I think you're not giving the right example. Yip Man wasn't a bajiquan master, but a wing chun master, and these are different arts.
As for the bajiquan master who survived the war, it was in fact one of the secret agent of KMT, named Liu Yun Qiao. He died in 1992.

+Kevin Sandor the 'razor' is believe to be based on the hitman who died in taiwan at 1992 in his 80's. Many believed he was THE most succesful hitman (or agent or 007 whatever you may call it) that chinese (KMD) send beyond enemy (Japan) line, since this wushu 'Bajiquan' is unarmed, up close, brutal (broken bones and internal bleeding) and personal. At that time, it makes the perfect choice for assassinate: get close unnoticed, kill a few key targets leave no trace (bullet shell, melee weapon type and other equipments). Until today, he is still believed to be one of a few user of Bajiquan that made this wushu to perfection.

+eden yan The first recorded baji quan teacher was Wu Zhong (吳鍾) (1712-1802). Other notable teachers included Wu Xiufeng (吳秀峰) and Li Shuwen (李書文) (1864-1934). Li Shuwen's students included Huo Dian Ge (霍殿閣) (bodyguard to Pu Yi, the last Emperor of China), Li Chenwu (bodyguard to Mao Zedong), and Liu Yun Qiao (劉雲樵) (secret agent for the nationalist Kuomintang and instructor of the Chiang Kai Shek's bodyguards). Baji quan has since acquired a reputation as the "bodyguard style". - Wikipedia

Xinyi is the style of Ma San, this character is Yixiantian (Razor), the style is bajiquan. The two characters are easy to confuse since the actors look a bit alike, and both sport a mustache and the same hairstyle. If you remember from later in the movie it says "The same year Razor started teaching, baji kungfu came to Hong Kong."

In that video he shows 1 tongbei, 4 baji, 1 pigua and 1 xingyi form... Besides other forms. Baji is much much more softer, because it is an internal style. This movie is awesome don't get me wrong. The xingyi was pretty spot on. Especially when u saw the dust move in that direction when the old accountant gives his presentation. That's really how it should be and what not many people can. I just wish they would have made the baji a bit more internal in this movie.

      Edit:
After doing some reading, I found out that there are apparently 3 versions of The Grandmaster.
      - The original Hong Kong cut (130min)
      - The international cut (122min)
      - The US cut (108min).
The Razor vs Ip encounter is only featured in the US version. The below article explains in greater detail the difference between each of the releases.

Dong wook Kim the reason because baji uses all those is you focus mainly on the opening and closing of the hips, do basically everything is powerful when you know how to use it. This scene had nothing to do with baji. I practice it for 6+ years now with my teacher who is actually from the birth place of baji in Hebei.

Granted, the depiction is probably spiced up a bit for film, given that many of the "flashy" moves in martial arts are not supposed to be the first thing you go for anyway and are only supposed to be deployed when the situation calls for it, but given that many people often call Chinese martial arts impractical or more of a dance than fighting styles, this really isn't that flashy. This is mostly very direct, brutal hammering with the bodies extremities, and to the untrained eye, it would appear to be little more than brute force with a bit of organization to it, this is pretty much what many striking styles would end up looking like in practice when utilized as intended.

    • @greyelf1537

This video made me look up actual practitioners of the style and when looking at the kata, it doesn't look nearly as flowery as most kung fu does. The kata and strikes look efficient, similar to karate. Like, almost sort of stiff, with hard fast strikes and pauses. It's like you get the best of both worlds, karate type strikes with kung fu flair.

    • @Xannyphantom905

@@greyelf1537 it's not "karate type" and there is no "kata". It's forms. Don't try to devalue Baji by categorizing it with karate, or try to mock kung fu. Most real Kung Fu is efficient.
