Because they don't have established IPs and fanbases that will defend bad decisions, indies HAVE to care about good game design and innovation. Something like Levelhead HAS to consider what makes a good level building/sharing experience whereas Mario Maker can get by with Nintendo's low standards of online/community features -while charging full price plus a subscription- because existing fans will play it regardless.
