Excellent video! I have changed quite a few spur and pinion gears in my day but never on the Maxx. Many times it can be tough to find good "how to" vechiles online howver this one was perfect. It was straightforward and right to the point. I am now running a metal 46mm Spur gear with a 25 tooth pinion on the v2. I think the v1 comes with a stock 25 tooth and v2 comes with a 24 stock. Also have a set of Arrma Talion Katar tires on it and it turns into something even better than it already is. The handling is phenomonal and speed is ferocious. These are definitely the tires this should have come with.
Alright so I have a question I bought a 54 tooth spur gear and the stock pinion gear is 23 teeth on the maxx manual it doesn't show you on the chart what slot to drop the pin into so can the 54 spur not go with the 23 pinion
Traxxas was my introduction to the hobby (Rustler 4x4) and I'm planning on getting a Maxx V2. Their stuff is just too awesome, I don't care what anyone says. Funny thing is that all the other major players are going proprietary as well, with all the smart batteries and smart chargers. At the end of the day you can still choose your batteries, but man using Traxxas stuff is great. I love not having to mess with my charger every damn time like with all my other batteries on my Losis, Axials, etc.
Yes, it is slower, but you need the torque to turn the drive train. It will cog if it is geared too high. I actually ended up going 20/54. So it's geared even lower than 20/54. That seems to be as high as I can go and not have it cog when I get on the throttle.
@@outsourcedrc Thank you for your reply. I understand why the gear change is necessary. I guess my question is, is it really worth slowing the truck down that much just to have bigger, heavier tires? Why not just go with something like the Trenchers LP 3.8 and keep some of the speed?
Installing the gears you recommended for my Maxx with 3.8 belted Badlands. Hard for me not to grease the gears up. You sure they won’t wear prematurely? Thanks!
Just got done following all of your instructions with the same gear set up. I’m running 3.8” belted proline badland tires. Getting some cogging occasionally when throttling. Any suggestions?
Need to replace the gearing on my widemaxx (went with metal spur and didn't upgrade pinion. Pinion got tore up eventually). Winter is here in Michigan. How do you think the fling kings would do in the snow? Or should I just go paddles. What would you recommend for gearing? Thanks so much
Those look like they are for the E Revo. They are probably pretty heavy. Is it cogging? If it does, then try a 20t pinion. If it still cogs, then bump your Spur up to a 54t. If it's still cogging, then you want to go down on your pinion some more. 16t is a low as it goes.
Nice Video, I was just about to tackle this job, and now I know exactly how. I know it has not been long, but how are those Jconcepts tires holding up? I really liked how they looked to handle and may pick up a set.
I did it exactly like that on my maxx and it soundes perfekt but the pinion got eaten up after litterly the first bash! I dont get it, how is that possible? Can someone tell me?
He answered in the video: not ideally. If dirt gets in there, the grease will make it stick and that would cause damage. Without grease, most dirt will just bounce off and fall out
For any RC, close to a 1:1 ratio. Bigger pinion, smaller spur. In this case, probably the 26 pinion and the 46 spur. That would definitely heat the motor up though. For general knowledge: 50t pinion and 50t spur is a 1:1 ratio (same as say 46 pinion, 46 spur. 58 pinion, 58 spur. These are 1:1 ratios). This is what some 200+ mph guys use. Though terribly unreasonable and too hurtful for the motor for a normal RC. Hope this helps (over a year later lol)
My friend has the maxx and I’m the torture tester, shredded the tires last summer and went to a bigger tire and had to re hear it but it kept breaking the teeth of the gears so I just told him about the XMAXX gears
Never changed anything when I switched to 3.8 backflip lol. Having some gear mesh issues after upgrading to castle 1515 combo now though gear mesh seems really tight on 24/50 setup and metal 50t spur?
Have you noticed the gears stripping easy on your maxx. Just swapped out to a 54/18 and put it in the C pin hole and got 20mins and BOOM. All stripped. Traxxas gears are not good imo
Love working on my Maxx, so simple to work on and you dont have to tear the whole thing down unless you need to.
Right?
Thank you Sir! I am going to make my kid study this video so he can manage the gear changes/repairs moving forward.

Thanks! I've gotten better at making these videos. Some of my earlier ones are so bad lol

Yea this is so funny. I literally just bought a spur and pinion to gear my Maxx up
so I know this will be helpful
Excellent tutorial. Quick and to the point. (The "A" hole. I'm 12 too!)

Do you notice the two motor screws, and screws for the cover never get all the way tight?
So to be clear on the 20/50 combo, the pin goes in the A-hole? 😂
yep lol
If you are not happy with the mesh you can omit the pin and adjust as desired.
A year later your video helped me, thanks! Thumbs 👍 for the A Hole lmao! 😂
Traxxas engineering is very smart.
Setting gear mesh is a breeze on the maxx.

Put rtv silicone around the motor plate and the chassis the bottom area and you ll have no dirt on the gears
Thanks for the help. as always your videos are very helpful😊
Great video, thank you! Can I ask why 20/50? I notice a lot of people using that setup but doesn't that make the truck slower?

What size tires and wheels are you putting on

The engineering that goes into each of traxxas’s trucks is wayyy beyond horizon hobby’s garbage.

Anywhere i can get a stronger motor/pinion gear? Had mine for 2 days and it broke the teeth right off.
So do these gears change the speed the maxx goes im new to this and my friend is selling me his non upgraded maxx v1
What was the gear called that was on the rod with the spur
Brilliant video thanks 😊 I'm thinking of buying one myself soon 😀
Great vid... Lol" A "hole....love my Maxx!👍

Don't let them balloon. I've had to reglue them. You can sling them off the wheels.
Great video man.
What best size gear to get for 7000+mah 100c
Does it become more noisy with the metal gears?
Yep
thank you from Germany, i Like your Videos, my English is a littlebit rosti, but i can you good understand. :-)
I did it exactly like that on my maxx and it soundes perfekt but the pinion got eaten up after litterly the first bash!
I dont get it, how is that possible?
Can someone tell me?
What tires are this they are bad ass
Tell you have to put it in the A-hole lmao, that was so freaky funny brother😉👍🏼💯
lol
Should there be greas in the pion and spear
He answered in the video: not ideally. If dirt gets in there, the grease will make it stick and that would cause damage. Without grease, most dirt will just bounce off and fall out
Good video! I wanna go 6s with my maxx so this helps a little bit! And have you ever thought about making your maxx 6s? I need more power and speed!
I have but I dont think i will. Maybe. Stop giving me ideas!
What would be the best tooth count for getting more speed from the Maxx

The big gear probably weighs more than my motor setup on my stampede
Well done as usual
My combo is 23/50 witch isn’t showing on the mesh chart any help ..
Yes it is. It says D.
Thx
Very good Tutorial.
I've got the E Revo Tires on my Wide Maxx V2 and im gearing down to 20/50.
I think it works good.
What do you think ?
What are your top 5 RCs?
My Clodbuster, E Revo 2.0, Felony, Fireteam, and my Maxx
@@outsourcedrc Thanks for the reply!
I’m twelve too I guess 🤣🤣🤣
This is such a great way to deal with gear mesh. I guess they patented it? 😅
I'm not sure. I doubt it, but it wouldn't surprise me.
@@outsourcedrc seems that way, i think they may have patented it😉👍🏼💯
Its Traxxas, of course they patented it
Do I have to change the pinion on my V1 if I put on Sledgehammer tires?
No.
You don't have to, but its not a bad idea. The V2 comes with a smaller pinion. It's a 23t
Never changed anything when I switched to 3.8 backflip lol. Having some gear mesh issues after upgrading to castle 1515 combo now though gear mesh seems really tight on 24/50 setup and metal 50t spur?

Nice
where is the slipper clutch on a tracks max V2?
There isn't one.
@@outsourcedrc Thanks
great video
How many RC do you have
No idea. I stopped counting long ago.
@@outsourcedrc you should give us a rc tour
Have you noticed the gears stripping easy on your maxx. Just swapped out to a 54/18 and put it in the C pin hole and got 20mins and BOOM. All stripped. Traxxas gears are not good imo
5:10 lmao
Aaaaaaahooolllleeee
Monkey metal
