    My dad took my whole family to see this movie last summer. It was a long awkward car ride home as my sister and I tried to explain why it wasn't a good movie. My parents were quite offended that we were being so critical and not supporting Christian entertainment. This review has brought me healing.

    Why can't these guys just HIRE a real writer? Like at this point I think they should be able to look at their work honestly and realize that the story and the pacing and the characters are not their strong suit. Make a bullet point list of what you want to talk about like redemption, salvation, and sports, and get SOMEONE ELSE to do it.

    • @saygoodnightkevin
      @saygoodnightkevin  4 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      I agree. That's what I told them. I said, "The best advice I can give you is get someone who isn't me, who knows about story telling, and completely rewrite this script." They need someone who understands structure and also understands dialogue.

      That's very true. I wonder if this is a budget issue or a pride issue sometimes tbh. I'm a writer (and I've won contests with my work), but I'm not a playwright, so I wouldn't try my hand at it. Do what you're talented at, and practice what you aren't until you are. But make sure your movie is good.

    The teachers having Hannah and her dad meet would have been much more sympathetic if Hannah was the one who instigated it. Maybe have Hannah trying to find out who her parents were and figuring out her dad is in the hospital, and then her coach realizes he’s the same guy he’s been meeting this whole time (or get rid of that whole coincidence and have him meet her dad at Hannah’s request). Then Hannah goes to meet her dad with the teachers’ help behind her grandmother’s back. It would be a lot more sympathetic because now it’s _her_ choice to know her dad, she sought out the connection first and wasn’t told against her caretaker’s wishes. She’s a teenager so her wishes should be respected, but there’s the conflict because her caretaker isn’t okay with it. That makes so much more sense. Otherwise, yeah, I agree with Kevin. The teachers crossed a line and did the wrong thing and it’s really annoying to see the situation painted in black and white.

    18:03 Thank you so much for calling that out, Kevin. So many of these Christian movies blame the wives when the husbands are the jerks/abusers and it needs to stop. It’s sexist and wrong and encourages so many women to stay in bad relationships and try to “be better” so their husbands will treat them right. NO. If you are in this situation, stop blaming yourself. You don’t “earn” love. If you have to earn affection from your partner, GET OUT. They don’t love you and it’s only going to get worse. You deserve to be treated well no matter what. “Being a better wife” isn’t going to help. Don’t stay in an unhealthy relationship just because the Bible says to submit. Be a good wife, of course, but if he doesn’t treat you right you don’t need to stay. He’s not loving you the way he’s supposed to according to that same Bible passage.

    • @joyeeverett6196

      ^^^^ If you have tried everything you can to repair the relationship and it isn't working, I think you should be able to leave. It might not be right to divorce, but sometimes it's necessary. We're willing to apply this to things like war and abortion (talking about conservatives), but not marriage. Love is a GIVEN. It isn't earned.

    A CIVIL SERVANT should never go behind the guardian’s back like that, the grandmother had every right to be angry, and yet she is painted as the obstacle for Hannah’s walk with God and Alex Kendrick’s character is the one doing the right thing. While I’m not an educator, I’m a church bus minister who works with kids from horrendous homes. I understand the temptation to go around guardians’ wishes when I know their child needs better, but in my opinion, what the coach did was very wrong and shouldn’t be seen as a “well the ends justify the means because it’s for Jesus.”

    One thing I’ve noticed from watching Christian movies is that a lot of people don’t understand that writing is a professional skill. Like just because you have a story in your head and know how to type words on paper, doesn’t mean you know how to write a story/movie. If Christian writers would take that seriously there would probably be less crappy movies

    I remember watching Facing The Giants, Fireproof, etc. when I was in high school. As a baptist kid, I was really inspired by these movies. And watching Overcomer definitely gave me those same feel-good-Christian feelings at the end... it spoke to my sweet baptist childhood heart. But, I did go to film school, and Overcomer definitely won't be a movie I brag about or recommend to my movie-watching friends. Hannah's character is pretty flat, there was too many coincidences, and I feel like there could've been much more powerful ways (rather than relying on big soundtracks) to build the story. Anyway, Overcomer does hit home to it's church audience. It's nice for a church movie night. But great review! Definitely agree with your thoughts.

    I admire that you still gave respectful criticism and tried to not tear the movie apart for the sake of tearing apart, because it's like the 7th (or 8th?) Kendrick brothers movie, because I couldn't do it if I had a review channel. In my view, it's the same movie all over again, but I guess there must be some marginal improvements.
    Serious, the girl in the end wins for the sake of winning, there's really no point in winning only to make the audience feel good. But that's the problem of almost literally all Christian movies, they're just feel good movies dealing with first-world problems (at least they tried to tackle the issue of deindustrialization leading to decadence in American small towns and fears of extinction of the middle class, but everything else it's still first-world problems), cinematic morphine - and morphine can be addictive (the opiate of Christians, to paraphrase a certain bearded philosopher).
    And it wouldn't be that bad if it wasn't this prosperity gospel message, that treats God as a genie that appears to make the characters' lives better, at the price of a few prayers; so while it privileges message over substance, it's not even a healthy message, but borderline heresy. Why don't they make a movie in which when the character becomes a Christian his life gets worse and he has to find God and grow up while going through the crisis and his victory in the end is materially small, but truthful? I guess that would be too shocking to the audience, but at least they could try to make the final big victory earned, just not this convenience in this movie.
    Christian movies just make frustrated, but I fear it's the only kind of representation we have.

  • @thenightrider2121

    Mr. Cartmenez saying "How do I reach these kids?" probably sums up the first thing all of these Christian filmmakers think when writing scripts, leading to cringeworthy lines and stuff.

    My family and I watched this hoping it would be good. By the scene where John & his wife are crying together, we were groaning with how bad the writing was. From then on it was just...really hard to watch. Cliche dialogue and long pointless scenes. I think the Kendrick Bros just need new script writers and a not-so-cliche premise.

    • @ilovejesus999ify
      @ilovejesus999ify 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Elwing of Doriath i think the problem with the Kendricks is that they’re too hung up on the family friendly label to really allow themselves a broader range of ideas. They somehow have the admirable but misunderstood idea that christian art have to be pure and family friendly, but the problem is that this idea of family friendly only waters down the message a lot. It would be so much more impactful if a movie like, say, Fight Club, had a christian message. If they dared venture out in the gritty and dark and horrorfying aspects of life. The light of christ will always shine so much brighter in the darkness and pain and trauma of real life, but Kendricks are not concerned about the contrast, they are only concerned about making family friendly content because they somehow think that by doing that they are glorifiying god. While I do think God surely are able to use their movies for his purpose - which I also think he does -, it doesn’t make them good movies and they won’t convince a whole lot of people.

    I think the worst thing about this movie, for me, is how rambling it is. I can't really put a finger on what the plot is supposed to be. It reminds me of trying to explain the plots of movies from Mystery Science Theater. I could tell you about characters and things that happen in the films, but often the stories are so aimless that it's really hard to actually articulate any strong central conflict. (The examples of Pod People, Future War and Space Mutiny come readily to mind...) This movie feels like that. It feels like just a bunch of things happening to some people, they kind of learn a lesson along the way, and then there's some sort of conclusion. We know the things the movie is heading to, but what's supposed to be the focus? Like, is the payoff that Hannah becomes a Christian? That she finds her identity in Christ? That *John* finds his identity in Christ? That Thomas reconciles with his daughter? That Hannah wins her race? That John succeeds as a cross country coach? There's just so much going on, and none of it has enough focus to distinguish itself. :/
    Edit: OH MY GOD AND NOW THEY'VE THROWN IN A RANDOM THING AT THE END WITH THE GRANDMA WHY DO ALL OF THESE MOVIES GO ON TOO LONG AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

    I watched this movie at the end of 2019 when I was still Christian, and and back then, that thing with Hannah's dad made me uncomfortable. It's so wrong, and looking at it now the first thing that comes to mind is why a good God would allow something so intensely immoral? Please don't ever do what these people did, that was horrible of them. They had no reason to become involved, and the grandmother should have sued.

    When you said, “This thought [about enormous character coincidence] occurred to me, but then I put it aside,” and I realized what it was, I literally said, “Oh NO,” out loud.
    I hate that I’m relieved they at least talked to Hannah before introducing them to each other.

    I haven't seen this movie, but I love the part about how being a Christian should be at the top of your list of traits. Sure, you'll be persecuted, made fun of for being a goody-goody or a prude or whatever, but words from the people don't matter. Through this review, this movie has made me ask myself, "Would I answer first with 'I am a Christian'?"

    "Hannah Scott" isn't all that uncommon a name, and plenty of kids are born on Valentine's Day. Wouldn't it have been an even more amazing twist if the guy in the hospital weren't the father?

Because I don’t really know why he’d be so up in arms about having to coach cross country when the basketball season does’t even start till December and cross country ends in late October/early November. I understand why he’s upset about the team leaving but idk it’s still all weird to me.

    I'm not sure the fact that the Kendrick brothers reached out to get your opinion on the film really should be commended if they didn't change a single thing or make any effort to take constructive criticism into consideration. I don't doubt their motivations at all, they truly seem like great men, but the innocence they bring to their films is so hard to watch. Everyone is so one-dimensional and boring, even the lesser good versions of the characters at the beginning of the film. They're all just so dull. I want to watch an arc where a character goes from A to Z, not A to B. Absolutely loved the review, I can't get over the fact that you watch these movies so many times in order to make these videos so thorough and hilarious. Props to you, man. Seriously loved it!

    8:01 That's a good point that we never learn this. I watched the audio commentary afterwards(And I rarely do that) and Alex says that he saw an article or something about how teens go to sex, drugs and stealing valuable items to gain self worth. Since the 1st 2 are not family friendly, they went with the stealing aspect.
    My theory to why they never say that in the movie is because there was no real way to fit that in. That would probably require VOICEOVER or another cliché.
    I'm not saying that this isn't flawed, but that background should help. Just adding my 2 cents.

    I don't think taking agency away from the protagonist is ever a good idea, but a bunch of white people taking agency away from a black girl is extra awkward.

    Ugh. Maybe it’s just me as an non-religious person, but lines like “if Jesus can forgive me for all the things I’ve done, I can forgive other people” really irk me. They just sound so unnatural and preachy to me. Like... Maybe at most I’d say “I’ve been doing a lot of self-reflection, and I think I’m ready to forgive you.” But it’s not like ‘Jesus did it, and I learned it 100% from Jesus, he is the only reason I can forgive’. Forgiveness is a very basic human function. If you did learn how to forgive people solely because someone you worship did it, and it had nothing to do with self-growth or empathy... that’s honestly pretty fuckin’ concerning tbh
