Sometimes your reviews of movies are more entertaining than the actual movies, this is one of those times.

I've honestly just gotten to the point where cancer inherently feels exploitative. It sucks, because there's a lot of better stories to be told about how cancer has changed people, good and bad, but at this point I'm just drained and my cynicism forces me to roll my eyes when they play the cancer card, especially for true stories. At least Walk to Remember had a guy becoming a Christian because of the cancer chick, this movie had a Christian selling albums (and a book he didn't even write, I guess) because of a cancer chick. It's almost impossible not to compare them, they're like...the same movie, except one focuses on the dude and the other manages to fit both characters into its runtime. Also, one isn't real.
I also...am not a huge fan of them conflating musical success with...changing lives, I guess? If we want to play the numbers game, Camp managed to have 1/10th the impact of Nickelback and that's not exactly representative of the impact she had on his life or that...like, God could have had on the world. It's just weird. Why focus on that? Even if he sold 10 or 50 million albums, was that the point?
This is all exactly correct. Totally agree.
I felt bad for Camps current wife. How does she compete with such a love story and wonderful person? The movie should have started out with the death of his first wife, then shown the path to how he was able re-find God and to re-build to the point to find love again. That would have been a lot more respectful to his current wife and focus more on Camp. This movie focus is on Melissa and makes a saint out of her. Could you imagine being married to someone who promotes books and movies based on their love for their first spouse and what a wonderful person they were? Creepy.
when I first heard about the plot of the movie, all I could think about was how his second wife must feel about it. It's one thing for someone to dearly miss their first wife, or even to create art in their memory, but it's a whole different thing entirely to romanticize your first marriage to the detriment of your current partner, and I kind of feel like the second is happening here
Especially since in the 2 years later bit at the end of the movie he says his first wife was and "ALWAYS WILL BE THE LOVE OF MY LIFE"

Adie has said she is very protective over Melissa's story because it helped her heal something inside her at the time she heard her story. You can honor the previous love of a person, and still be a priority to the partner you're with.

That's my biggest issue with the movie, that KJ looks and sounds NOTHING like Jeremy... I've been a fan of his since 2007ish, and he's NEVER had that hair, and there's no way his arms were that small in college, the dude's ripped... Plus his voice has that low gravely quality that's just fantastic, and KJ sounds nothing like it
True! I really enjoyed K.J. Appa's performance, it looked really solid and heartfelt, but never once did I see or hear him and think "that's Jeremy Camp." I thought "this is what Archie did in that Riverdale time jump this season."

Ragamuffin was really good, but I wanted to scream at the screen so many times "It's just a girl, STOP obsessing and put the fricken' bottle down!" But, at least it was really honest.

This movie, however...
Realized watching this video that I've actually met Jean Luc. His sister's family goes to my church. Jean Luc seems like a really nice guy and he's done a good job leading worship a few times. I do wonder how he feels about how he was portrayed in the movie.
Hilarious review as usual, Kevin. Made me laugh out loud a lot, which I super appreciate in times like these.
I think this movie should have zoomed in more. Start in the hospital, post-miracle cure. Jeremy and Melissa are in the hospital, a regular checkup. Then let us see a bit of their lives, maybe throw in some family interaction, letting us get to know these characters on the ground a little bit. Add in Jeremy's college singer dude career thing whatever it is, and best friend/fellow musician Jon Luc. Life is going okay, save for the struggle with cancer and whatever little character flaws and interpersonal grievances these characters happen to have.
Melissa's prognosis gets worse. Her health declines more and more. She doesn't look good while dying.
Then spend the second half of the movie watching Jeremy struggle with the aftermath, and find his way back into faith, stronger and wiser than before. Then sing le song, then give us a quiet scene, alone or with family, of Jeremy reaching acceptance and being ready to move on into the next chapter of life, _just like Thanos at the end of Infinity War._
I think these movies tend to try to jam too large a time frame into 90-120 minutes to really dig deep into the characters, their conflict, and its resolution. _I Still Believe_ and movies like it spend half the movie telling us how freakin' great Mr. Godly Main Character is, and too little time on the conflict that is supposedly the plot driver. Zoom in. Slow down. Let us sit with these characters in a setting that isn't an awkward, cutesy date scene. *No character development montages.*
That's just my two cents.
Yeah, even if life like this happened to him, this would have been better presented as a testimony that you read at church, not an hr and 56 minute movie. I agree that Camp feels more like a Mary Sue, especially how quickly he recovered from his first wife's death. In fact, the way the trailer was, I thought this movie was going to focus on Camp's grieving process, the rising action of the story and how God helped him overcome loss. This is way better than God's Not Dead but inferior to something like I Can Only Imagine.
Yeah I agree with them trying to fit too large of a storyline into 1.5hrs. The characters are too glossed over, but you can’t do too much to fix it because of time.

BUT WHERE'S HER PERSONALITY???!! I know we're watching clips, but still....sigh. I wanted more with A Walk to Remember as well, but I still see more personality in that movie than in this one.
That’s exactly how I felt. If she was such an awesome person and so impactful, they should have shown us that.
@@saygoodnightkevin and when Camp says at the end about this being her story, he takes the majority of it. We should've gotten more about why she doesn't like to disappoint ppl but it's only mentioned. Now with Dr. Watson from the Sherlock Holmes stories, he's narrating the stories but we get to know who Sherlock is via John's perspective, as well as the doc's personality. They r still flat characters, but the mysteries Sherlock solves, how his brain works, make us want to get invested.
I felt like there were many things regarding her character and their relationship that were important but left unexplored. One scene that particularly disturbed me was the scene where the doctor tells them that they need to remove her uterus in order to stop the cancer from spreading, but she refuses because she wants to have children. The movie should have dug into why her desire to have children was so heavily linked to her self-identity. Was this due to her theological beliefs? Was it due to expectations her society or culture placed on womanhood? It was also odd that Jeremy Camp (the character, not the real person) didn't tell her that her worth to him wasn't dependent upon her ability to give birth. I mean, if she had gotten her uterus removed, she might have lived. He never really grapples with the role he played in her refusing that procedure. I also felt that their sudden marriage came off as a bit emotionally manipulative on Jeremy Camp's part. At the time, they were broken up after spending a lot of time together. Then, she got cancer, so she was not in a place where she could likely think clearly and make rational decisions. I could see why she would feel pressure to marry him just to avoid being alone in an extremely stressful and lonely time in her life. Jeremy Camp should have told her that he was going to be there for her whether they were romantically involved or not before agreeing to marriage.
To be fair, Jeremy Camp wasn't written all that well either. He came off as someone who never experienced hardship or adversity, and that's a difficult character to empathize with. Throughout the beginning of the film, a lot of his success is handed to him, and I'm sure that's not accurate for the real Jeremy Camp.
@@BSR-zy2so I mean what happened? I Can Only Imagine showed we Christians are getting better with our films and then this movie comes out. It can't be for money because the former not only was a box office success, but it was number 1 as the highest grossing independent film in America.
@@jacindaellison3363 To be honest, I wasn't a fan of "I Can Only Imagine" either. I felt like it implied that Christianity was a cure-all solution for abusers and that Christians can't be abusive. Needless to say, that isn't true. I feel that the reasons for abuse are complex, but the movie haphazardly simplifies that.
"But what if God wanted us to make out ?" is kind of a good pick up line.

Okay so the guy who plays Jeremy also plays Archie in Riverdale right? So I found it kinda funny he's singing in this because he sounds horrible in the Heathers episode. Check out the clips of that, it will make you die inside, especially if you are familiar with the musical.

It's a funny idea to think about. My brother and I joke about this often. If Pureflix made a movie about our lives, what would it be like? We're both atheists, so we figure that my brother would be depicted as a rebellious hellraiser who hates God and wants to see the world burn. In reality, our parents were physically and mentally abusive, but in the movie, they would probably be soulful passifists since they're Christians. My brother would die in some overly dramatic way (probably a drug overdose since my brother sometimes uses marijuana, and Pureflix would exaggerate) and convert at the last minute, thanks to my parents' prayers. In shock from his death, I would pull out a box of crosses I'd been hiding in my closet (because I believed in God all along and was just lying to be cool) and have a cum to Jesus moment. Lol. Gotta love Pureflix!

This film was an introduction to the Erwin Brothers' Kingdom Storytellers? Well, tbh and imo, this movie isn't a good impression. It's a fine 5/10 movie, but a step down from I Can Only Imagine.

Got some epic burns there, Kev! 😂🤣 I've only listened to a few Camp songs so not exactly a fan or very interested to see this myself (your review makes it really entertaining tho), but I am kind of hyped to see where the Erwin brothers will go in the future.
Let's just hope they don't play it too safe over their next films (especially on the upcoming Bible ones they have already announced), and do take some creative risks to shake things up a bit. Given they're likely going to be the most known example of Christian filmmaking for the upcoming 5 - 10 years. Can't wait for your next one! 🙂

I haven't seen shania Twain since she 1st came out but wasn't she basically famous because she had a music video showing her but in tight jeans. But now she's in Christian movies. I love this world
And her abs were always a show case of her videos too. lol
The basic plot is similar to the movie Shadowlands, which is about C.S. Lewis's marriage with Joy Davidman. It's about a famous person and their marriage to someone who's dying. Much better film, though. Highly recommend it. Don't know if you should do a full review of it, since those are more fun when the films are bad, but I'd love to hear you talk about it.

They did, but they wanted to work with KJ's voice, not make him sound like Jeremy. KJ's voice is not that deep or gravely, he's more like singer songwriter/ Ed Sheeran, talented but not going to win any vocal competitions.

This movie feels like nothing short of emotional manipulation. I hate movies that use cancer stories for the sake of drama, especially when it focuses on the spouse instead of the one dying, and honestly it feels like it uses the subject of God just as much as it does cancer. I was hoping this wouldn't be the case since I enjoy Britt Robertson as an actress, but man this was awful to watch as a cancer survivor.

I admit I laughed a little too loudly at your claim that Jeremy's music is mediocre. Also loved the Jean-Luke/Picard jokes, as someone who loves TNG. Besides that I have some thoughts.
Everyone kept saying (at least on social media) how life changing or inspiring this film was, but It was hard for me. I felt something was off. Let me explain if I may.
I like KJ as a person, he seems really sincere, but I feel he thought this would launch his own music career. I have a feeling that was the plan but Co-vid stopped that possibility. He's a talented guy but I feel too much too soon could ruin him and his witness. He claims to be a Christian but he comes across as a progressive Christian to me. If he's trying to win over conservative Christians he'll have to clean up his act. I like that Kingdom Studios is open to all talent but they'll have to square with the fact that not all Christians fit into a particular mold. Especially not KJ, or actors like him.
This movie reminded me of the "manic pixie dream girl" trope, and the "nice guy" trope. They tried to soften it by mentioning talking to mentors and prayer but it's almost "blink and you'll miss it". When hormones get confused for God's voice, I roll my eyes. Especially if she's kind of with another guy. Kind of painted it as if you can't just be close to a guy and not have him fall for you, or vice versa. We CAN be friends and nothing else. I wish the love triangle and the 'can you live without her" talk wasn't in there. It's ok to want someone to walk through life with, but to not be able to function is co-dependent.
I cried during this film as soon as they showed the death certificate, as I have had to sign one for my dad, and it hit way too close to home. They painted it like unless she had died, his career wouldn't have been what it was, or he wouldn't have had a connection with Adie later. Jeremy seems like a good man, raised by good parents, taught to be loving, responsible, decent. It DID annoy me that a LIE was the catalyst to everything. They paint it as if it's OK to have the hero's journey start as a lie. I DID like that they showed him actually in a mourning process, and showed it was ok to talk about it.
Oh, and the fact that they painted Jeremy's younger brother's Down Syndrome as a "disappointment" made me cringe a little. I get what they're trying to say, no one wants a child to suffer or go through the things some Downs people go through, but they go through it because of people's ignorance, and bullying. They can be productive members of society and you aren't a saint for being a supportive person in their lives, you're just being decent.

I agree Kevin they should of showed Jeremey as flawed but still trying, Melissa and Jeremy building an actual relationship, and the situations in a more grounded way. Unfortunately it's an Erwin brother's film. Ragamuffin did it better. Rich Mullins was never shown as perfect.

Tbh, I'm happy that the Erwin Brothers casted KJ regardless of whom he portrayed in other movies. Shows the Brothers look at talent when casting actors.

@@debzykvids Same! There were always Christian propaganda peices playing my house growing up and I remember End of the Spear being a great change of pace. It's been so many years I have no way to remember if it's actually good. It was the most violent movie we were allowed to see other than Passion of the Christ. Also that scene from Faith Like Potatoes where the boy gets run over, that was hardcore shit!
@@thelordfosk I know, that's why I haven't seen Passion yet (though planning to in the near future). I think Edge of the Spear and Faith Like Potatoes are okay overall (outside of the violence here and there); not necessarily standouts but a bit better in portraying faith and the struggles of missionary life in rural areas from an evangelical perspective.
@@debzykvids From what I remember, I'd have to agree. End of the Spear had such a massive affect on me as a kid that I still remember that special phrase went something like "Mbua bea, inungua." And that end credits scene of the indigenous people in the supermarket. Religious childhoods have a WHOLE other set of references 😂

Granted I only saw these movies once, along with China Cry, when visiting an American couple who had a collection of Christian movies (I'm British so a bit of a culture clash), but they were the more interesting ones I can think of that kind of seemed to try. Then again, they were based off true stories so that's an expected requirement...

It look like my least favourite type of film one where everything happens but nonetheless nothing changes thus making whatever happened seem like the nothingness that resulted.
Speaking of Queen and biopics, some of Freddie Mercury's vocals for the 2018 biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody," Marc Martel, former lead singer for the now-defunct Christian band Downhere, sang some of Freddie, as the two sounds eerily similar. And, last year, Marc went on a Christmas tour with Michael W. Smith and Amy Grant, the latter of whom introduced Marc in almost exactly the same way Famy Grant introduced Bart Millard in "I Can Only Imagine." I'm not even trying to knock on anyone, but it's just hilarious. This one seemed more genuine though. Here's a video, from 0:00-0:54:

Say what you will about I Can Only Imagine, but at least you felt for Bart and why being a singer was important to him. I rewatched I Still Believe yesterday, and my original thoughts haven't changed:a concept that should've stayed as a testimony and not stretched to an approximate 2 hr movie.
With Bart Millard, it was important to him to be a success because his dad constantly berated about being a failure, especially when he couldn't play football anymore. That made Bart afraid of being a failure and not taking criticism well, as well as composing run-of-the-mill songs b/c he didn't want to open up about his past but that was where his music shone the most.
With Jeremy Camp, they never go into why he needs to find his story, outside of making it in the music industry, why Melissa was afraid of disappointing ppl, they don't even show him struggling with writing the wrote songs for his "story"-everything comes easily for this guy.

Not too get too ThEoLoGiCaL but personally I do believe that God can turn any awful situation into a good one. I believe it is in his nature and even if we can’t quantify it, I think he will. That said, I do believe the idea of filmmakers using this to justify their lack of creativity is lazy and misuses God and the nature of God. Even if your crappy movie brings one person to God, or strengthens somebody’s relationship with Him, He still calls us to live in excellence and do everything to His glory. That’s not an excuse to make a lazy, boring movie that exploits conservative Christians. But that’s just my thoughts on it I guess
I'm fine with the idea that there is a god who essentially "plays the numbers game" to make bad things happen so that different good things can result. I wouldn't worship such a being, but I wouldn't necessarily think ill of him. However, my problem is then when people try to assert that God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent. If he can do anything, then there's no point in making people suffer to attain the desired outcome. A being who could do anything could bend the laws of logic to make every situation positive. Inflicting suffering would be arbitrary.
2189BSR I understand your feelings completely. We live in kind of a crappy world and it’s very hard to think that a omniscient, omnipresent, benevolent being could exist at all, much less be in control. However to an extent I do believe free will has a part to play in the crappy world we live in. I believe in a God that is a gentlemen of sorts, and while He has perfect plans for every individual, He does not force His will upon His creations who choose to reject it. As for natural disasters and the such, I am not sure if I know how to answer those kind of questions to be quite honest, I just trust that there is one, and I believe I know He who has the answers.
The free will response doesn't work for me because it assumes that the universe must be arranged in such a way where people's actions have a direct effect on others, but it doesn't take much imagination to think up a world where that isn't the case but people still have free will. What if each of us were put into our own world where those around us were just convincing illusions, for instance? Plus, I think we could have a fascinating debate about whether we even have free will now, given the lack of control we have over our biology and environment. If you think about it my way, all human actions must be a long set of dominoes leading back to a god, should one exist. In that sense, God would not allow free will anyway. Also, I don't think claiming to know without evidence is wise.

I don’t think that God is a necessarily logical being and I don’t see logic as the only way to view and judge the universe, condolences to the Greeks. I claim to know based on personal experiences, though I know that’s just anecdotal. Honestly I don’t really believe in theological vs. atheistic debate because I haven’t really ever seen somebody’s mind changed because of it, and I don’t believe that’s how Jesus wouldve done it. The Christian Faith isn’t called such because of its basis in facts and logic, hahaha. But I do believe in free will. I’ve briefly looked into the idea of determinism and I found it fascinating, and I partially subscribed to it for awhile but just upon thinking about it I’m not sure I buy into it anymore. I mean if determinism says that I make a decision to choose Outcome A over Outcome B based on my personal exposure to the ideals of Outcome A being the best way to go, then what happens when I am exposed to both Outcome A and B equally and believed both were equally correct? How could my decision be completely predetermined by anything then? I don’t know, but like I said, I have minimal information on these concepts. Not claiming to be an expert. Although I do believe Jesus was posed a similar question about free will affecting another human being. I would need to look into the specific verses but if my memory serves me well, I believe He said something along the lines of “Every human has made a mistake and therefor cannot judge another for theirs” or something like that. Basically none of us are without sin, or without sin that affects another. Not that we still can’t question the very idea of God allowing our sin to affect another person’s, but I always think it becomes dangerous when we all try to decipher and decide whether or not God is a moral God, or one who has our best interest. My belief is that the answer is always yes, and we just cannot always see it with our limited knowledge

Personal experiences can provide justification, but if the results of the experiences aren't replicable or potentially falsifiable, then they are significantly less likely to be true, and making decisions based on them is likely to result in false conclusions. These false conclusions can then be used to produce more false conclusions, which result in more bad decisions being made with faulty logic.
In terms of theist vs. atheist debates, I both agree and disagree. I think that these debates can change people's minds, but I also have little praise for traditional, timed public debates. I think they often come down to who has more self-confidence, is able to say the most catchy quips, and is willing to make the most exaggerated claims, regardless of who is correct. In a debate, if you're explaining, you're losing, and that's not a good way to discern who is right.
In regard to determinism, I think that it's more complicated than an exposure to outcomes. Our environment is only one piece of the puzzle. Our decisions are also governed by our biology, specifically our brain structure as governed by our genes. Therefore, if we were faced with two choices, both of which we had equal exposure to, I believe it would come down to the way our brain is structured as well as the status of chemicals like neurotransmitters and hormones. For instance, a person with an underdeveloped prefrontal cortex might "choose" the riskier option.
The problem is that when we consider a God who is omnipotent and omniscient and created the universe, we bump into some problems with free will. God would have created the environment and biological structure of the first humans, either directly or indirectly depending on if you accept evolution or not. Because humans make decisions based on their biology and environment, there's no room for free will. Humans then passed down their genes to their descendents, who would also be controlled by their environment and genes. While humans could change their environments, the decision to do so would be based on their current environment and genes. All of this would create a long string of outcomes that would lead back to the creator, assuming one exists.
I realize that you think judging the morality or knowledge of such a Creator is dangerous, but I think that not doing so is even more dangerous. After all, how can any being possibly claim to know what it does not know? When we surrender our rationality to others, even to a powerful or intelligent being, we risk committing great atrocities on another's behalf. To me, that is the most morally reprehensible thing one can do. We can make mistakes using our reasoning as well, but when we govern ourself with evidence and mutually-ensured skepticism, we are at least not reliant on blind trust that one being is irrefutably correct. If the god is truly omnipotent and omniscient, appealing to our reasoning should be easy for him and immeasurably valuable for us.
