I have had to do that as well just to be able to move rounds into the truck. Then I worry about splitting when I get home..

I normally think of splitting as an alternative to sawing, ie not using power tools. Isn't this just sawing it up and not splitting?

    • @WoolysWorld

Wooly's World Aw you know there’s always those “manly men” that can split the worst of the worst burls and knots with nothing more than a hatchet or a karate chop !! Of course those guys are only that tough behind a keyboard and not in the woods standing beside you showing their ability. So I don’t give those guys the time of day because no matter what you say or do, they can top it. I noodle sometimes with nasty crotch pieces and sometimes in green softwoods like cotton wood and sycamore. Those two hold so much water and are so heavy si I just noodle ‘em down to workable sizes and let them air dry a month or two. Then split em with the hydraulics. I just do my own thing kinda like you do. LOL !!

I have seen the same attitude over splitters, so my thought is the best possible splitter is the one that gets the job done, or the one you have! This goes for everything, trucks, tools and whatever. Everything else is just bs, a big c@#k fight of personal opinion, and to see if someone can get you to either waste your time or money to think like them!

What I and 2 other old timers notice is how fricking "heavy" a green round wood can be. Damn we have super large oak rounds and each one weights a ton. If they fall on there flat side its damn near impossible to stand them back up. unbelievable weight.

Going againsta the grain like that wears out your chain quite fast. Do that enough and the cost of this method is whatever a new chain will cost you. I personally make 2 cuts right in the middle and then break it into quarters. Then you can split them the normal way.

Just check out the wood wright shop of Roy Underhill! Everything he did was with manual labor!
