Try metal kitchen tongs for holding the wood while splitting. Saves any potential finger incidents!

A wooden stick on the top is better, if the blade hits wood it'll blunt less than hitting metal.
I harvest all my firewood from my ten acres. Don't have cedar at my place, but lots of red oak, cherry, white oak. beech, & hard maple.
Of all of them the red oak with no knots splits like a dream. I split 16" logs into squares & from there can drop a hatchet onto the squared log & get splits as small as 1/4", nothing else will split into such a small splits. I sun dry the splits in the sun for a couple weeks. When I set a flame to them they go up almost as if lighting gasoline with no smoke.
You can shave with that axe. I have one.

Hey for a few seconds and handed it back to me when I went to put it back in the little sheath I slipped it went through my glove heavy thick glove like butter and nicked my thumb and my forefinger I would not ever use it for for somebody that hurt themselves cut their thumb really bad or cut a finger really bad. I made a device in a kitty litter container plastic cable later jug it in there with the blade up with some screws and I can put it in there and pick the whole thing up about an anchor down to a piece of a 2x6 so it's a platform holds all the killing inside and it's totally safe cuz I just put the wood on top and then smack it with another piece of wood for a sledge or a hammer or whatever...
why are you cutting up kindling when you have a ton of it on the ground (bark wood is the best kindling by far) its a no brianer.
Thanks for your comment and you're exactly right. In the video I do mention picking up the bark and scraps that fall off. The cedar kindling is just another great way to obtain some easy fire starters at a very low price, especially for those who don't split a lot of firewood and don't have large bark piles like most of us do.

I’ve been clearing eastern red cedar from my property all winter. It’s been going in a huge burn pile , tossed in a ravine, or taken to the local mulch company where they pay me for the logs. Never once considered it for kindling. I use pine scraps from construction projects or the slivers of hardwood after splitting for firewood for kindling.
You should definitely use it for kindling! I’m jealous :)

Small tire screwed into the butt will hold the kindling from falling off. Bill is in the mail.
I grew up in Denver so in my mind cedar was like a precious resource like oil and gold.
Moved to Kansas then Missouri;

Have a swing double bit x slam it down in there then you put that your kindling on top of that and smack it!
No loss is fingers or thumbs like people are going to find out doing it like you show...
The best way to make kindling: Square up rounds on your splitter. Take slabs off the square and stack them on the splitter. Using the splitter multi cut the stack to the width you want them. Lots of kindling in a short time...
......and using red oak gives the cleanest & smallest diameter splits.
@@pauldentler7127: I love red oak, but it takes a year to dry...so I would recommend cherry or ash..

We don't have cedar around here, but I have used some scraps of cedar and old shingles from teardowns to start fires. We do have juniper which we call "eastern red cedar" that has a much greater aroma. I keep some around to put on the coals under the cannibal cauldron when I take a soak.
Great video, I guess you don’t live in the Pacific Northwest. we have an abundance of cedar over here which makes it a lot less expensive. Keep up the videos, I found your channel when I googled how to make a saw buck.

Where do u find the cedar post everything I am finding says it’s treated
I buy mine from Family Farm and Home which is a farm and garden store here in Michigan. They may be harder to get now due to Covid and wood being hard to find. In the past they've always been able to order them if they don't have them in stock. You definitely don't want the treated ones. I hope this helps!
Neat idea to use posts. It just seems to be a really slow way to do kindling.
It doesn't take too long and it's one of the easiest ways I've found to get cedar kindling. The scraps left over from the wood splitter is faster though, but it's not cedar.
I have an almost unlimited supply of cedar when I pick up my daughter every 2 weeks . Will pick some up!

Thank you. The hatchet I used in the video is a Fiskars 7550. I believe it’s the newer version of the X7. I’m very satisfied with it and would definitely buy it again.

I just checked out local Family Farm and Home store which is where I normally purchase them and they're out of stock too. However, it does say they're available on special order so maybe that's an option at a store near you?
