Twisted Metal 2 - 27 Years Later

  • Twisted Metal 2 released in 1996 for the PlayStation 1. It was the second game in the series. Developed by Singletrac the same studio from the first game, they sought to improve and polish and make perfect everything they felt was lacking in their original effort while adding a ton more content, characters, and environments.
Many consider Twisted Metal 2 to be the pinnacle of car combat, a height no other game has been able to match inside or outside of this franchise. Featuring smooth, deep, and engaging gameplay set in a playful world with darkness lurking just under the surface. How could it not be in consideration for that spot? Even David Jaffe holds this game in high regard.
Well, let's take a look and see if it holds up in the modern day for someone who hasn't spent their childhood with this game and thus has hardly any nostalgia for it?

As someone who has serious nostalgia goggles for Twisted Metal 2, I truly appreciate your honest criticism for what the game presents at its core. It's a very well-presented game with a decent number of gameplay problems.

You weren't THERE man, you showed up late to the party. You didn't cut your 3D teeth on the low poly sludgefest of TM1 that gave us the first taste of a big open 3D vehicle based worlds before GTA. There was NOTHING like TM1 and we were happy damnit. In 1996, you were HAPPY to have blistering thumbs because we were blown away by the upgrades in presentation, teased by the single trailer on a demo disc we watched over and over. I traded a Virtual Boy for a copy of TM2 I gave to my neighbor for his birthday, just to have a taste. God damn kids. If your balls hadn't dropped by TM1 and 2 were out, you don't know what it is to be blown away.

TM2 is the very first video game I ever played in my life. It symbolize the meaning of the saying : The more you hate, the more you love.
TM2 forged me to casual free gamer to competative gamer. I have some fond memories of my bro bullying me in this game. He enjoys seeing me rage crying in agony losing on every game. Humilating me in every embarassing way to the point where my grandma finally got mad and tell my bro let me win for once just to shut me up or she'll be turning off our PS1. 😂 From that point on I programmed myself to train hardest I could. Somehow getting better after then I got to enjoy what I dreaded the most.
PS : I miss the time we only need to be in school and play TM2 back home. Invite friends to come over to play after school. Got chips pop some soda as you take turns to battle along with your friends. GOOD TIMES.

Twisted Metal 2, while a solid game I feel like it gets hyped up a bit too much due to nostalgia. I prefer Black and Head on over it just because they simply play better.

The tactics that really help in Twisted Metal is pretty much always staying mobile unless you get a good ambush opportunity.
Not even a brag but i cleared these games with patience on hard mode with zero continues by using hit and run tactics and rear-firing weapons when i was about 6-7 years old.
Playing these games constantly practically gets you into the rythym of them and knowing who you are fighting at any given moment is half the battle.
I will say i just bought Twisted Metal 1/2 on PSN and got absolutely decimated as the controls feel so wonky in the modern era.
I will say though Holland was my favorite location growing up. Constant evasion while sneaking in any attack possible and than booking it out of there was the name of the game.
The two cars i found the best overall to beat the game were Thumper and Warthog with Grasshopper being the most underwhelming and difficult to win with especially on HARD AS THE AI IS EVEN MORE BRUTAL.

I've had kind of the opposite journey as you. Twisted Metal 2 was my very first Twisted Metal game. It was the one that launched me into a rabbit hole from Christmas of 1997, moving forward. Over the next 26 years, I played all of the other games, with one exception which I'll come back to. This was the one that I kept revisiting, because of my love for its presentation and understanding of how it controlled. I was in the boat of TM2 being the best of the best....until two days ago, when I played the Twisted Metal game that I never got around to.
That game was Twisted Metal: Black, which you did a video on that perfectly hits the nail on the head. I've been playing and documenting my first time with Black for the last 48 hours and after spending even that little amount of time with it, I found myself experiencing a dilemma. Everything I loved about TM2 is there, but amplified in Black. It's faster, snappier, more responsive, and my god it's more chaotic. I wish I could experience the first 5 minutes all over again, when I was having a borderline panic attack trying to make sense of what I was tossed into. All of that magic I experienced as a 6 year old with Twisted Metal 2 came rushing back ten fold into my now 32 year old brain when I played Black for the first time.
What I'm getting at is this. I still like Twisted Metal 2, it's an iconic and memorable game in the series. However... I now understand Twisted Metal: Black to be simply THAT game I see when I think of the best things about Twisted Metal. Having experienced 2 as a kid, then Black as an adult many years later has made it very hard for me to come back to 2. I dare say that I can't, knowing there's a much better option available for me to experience.

The one thing that makes the first one and the second one probably very hard even though David Jaffe along with Scott Campbell and the rest of the people at singletrack at the time when they made these games was probably the fact that all the AI combattons focus on you they don't really battle themselves. And I've noticed that through gameplay and recently another TH-camr who has reviewed these classic games that you are the glue that holds it together. If you hide in a spot where the AI can't find you in anyway they will just drive around aimlessly and occasionally get ahead on the other AI computer-controlled opponent. But in all honesty it is still a great game and the best of the franchise and my opinion because Twisted Metal 2 is tied with Twisted Metal black. But that's probably the main reason why this game is so damn difficult..
And why lots of people decided to put in that God mode cheat code so many damn times.

I kinda have mixed opinions about the "this game is too hard" thing I see lobbed at TM2. Maybe my perspective is warps from playing fighting games, but I generally expect that learning controls/handling and inputs will take some time before becoming actually good at the game. I played this game a ton at a kid this one and 4, I jumped back and forth between them both as I liked different things about each (and the Vigilante 8 games too). I can understand the initial frustrations of "how do I do stuff" but that's just part of the journey in some games. BUT, the one thing I always disliked about the TM games, is that the AI does in fact cheat, and overtly. They have infinity weapons (and all of them at all times) and infinity power meter for special inputs, so they can just do stuff in long chains that you cant. Part of me gets that maybe they wanted to not have the cars seek out the pick ups to leave them for the player, but a limiter on these things would have been nice. I've had Mr Slam on many occasions 100% me in a freeze loop a few times in memory, and that's just bluntly unfair. Not even coming to slam me, just sitting there at a distance shooting a freeze missle every 3 seconds, which is impossible for the player to do.
There is however input commands you can input during the game to also give yourself the AI infinity weapons, (and homing napalms if you wanna be nasty), or super machine guns, which I would use on and off when I felt like just kinda sandboxing and messing around. But the base game was still a lot of fun and I got good enough over time to straight through the game on Hard with no cheats. I just think this game kinda has that fighting game feel of it taking time to full grasp the handling and gimmicks. I still had a ton of fun with these games and the itch to play them again after all these years is kinda coming back.
I think the usual input for most of the cheats was the same U D D L R R L D U while holing certain or multiple shoulder buttons. Homing napalms has it's own unique input which I don't fully remember.

I guess my question will be, did you first play it back then, when it hit shelves?
Are you at least in your mid 30's or older, and started playing with the Atari 2600?
I ask this because you have to be a little old to really understand what the game was at the time.
You could absolutely dominate this games entire existence now, and completely have it mastered. If your childhood started around the early 2000's, you didn't exist in that era of gaming to comprehend the nostalgia that is TM2.
You probably started off with the newer titles, then coming back to the older stuff, it doesn't "hit right" for you.
It's true. If you started with more modernized games, going back to the retro junk feels obsolete and ehh.
This will never go away. Your mind is forever programmed like this. And you'll never be able to relate with everyone else.
    That's just what it is.
You're not stupid, or slow or anything. You're obviously educated beyond even me. I understand twisted metal by heart an soul. But I'll never be able to create a video, and have it so well articulated as you put it. Due to my own limitations educationally.
But what i do comprehend, is that you aren't dumb. It's your opinion. And I would even agree with you about the slippery, slidey physics, frustrating command inputs that don't respond too well, (or are delayed), and it's difficulty being somewhat a tad bit too hard.
I did a break down about this on the comments in various TM video's. Long before this recent TM craze blew up. I'm talking more then 15 year's here repetitively just me all over comment sections.
I've been around a really long time. I've seen TM grow from the very first game, into 2012.
I have my own opinions. I've remained loyal to the game and annoyed everyone of my past friend's about the franchise. I've discovered shit nobody knew about, long before TH-cam even existed. I've been in the shadows this whole time just chilling, watching, waiting, and judging...
Believe me man, you're just one of the many who has a preference. Not everyone is going to like 2, and that's okay. You're not alone in that.
Just like me, i dislike TM Blacks gameplay, and i know other's (albeit rarely), do agree with me as well. Me and you are a part of a small minute group of people who dislike two of the franchises biggest, favorited title's. You with 2, and me with Black. Opposite ends of the coins here, but similar viewpoints in an odd twist of fate.
All that matters is we're part of the fan base.
Now, it's too late for me. My preferences are the original four titles. The modern stuff is alright, just not for me. 🤷
    That's where i'll be.
You can find me somewhere in Assault on Cyburbia. River Park Rumble. Freeway Free for All. L.A. New York. Hong Kong. Tokyo. London. Neon City. Road Rage. Minions Maze. Or Sweet Tooths Carnival.
My personal favorite levels. Again, funnily enough, the very ones hated by you lol.
Which would make us polar opposites.
I won't be too hard to find.
I'll probably be using big, slow vehicles.
You may or may not hear me at a distance.
    Come at me. 🔫

I understand where you coming from, however when I played the ratchet & clank games on the PS2 back in the day, I never gotten around to play up your arsenal up until the early 2010s ( by the way I did play them in order ) which people claim it to be the best game of the original trilogy if not the best in the series. But I find myself to keep falling asleep everytime I try playing it of how repetitive it is, Lacks of platforming and among other stuff I have issues with. I just want to give an example on that part but yeah, even if I did play twisted metal 2 when it was new at the time, I can easily tell something is off and not having as much fun compare to the other sequels, don't get me wrong it's still a good game and I can see the impact on the vehicular combat genre.

  • @hxclambfan
    @hxclambfan ปีที่แล้ว +3

Twisted Metal 2 has definitely not aged well but I feel like it's become polar opposite now where everybody tries to make out like it's terrible now. Like people make out like everyone says it's free of faults and I've never heard anybody describe it as perfect because it's far from it. Compared to the ps2 era games it's far worse. But when comparing it to the other ps1 era games I feel like there is no argument 2 is the best one. Maybe there were a couple of things the others did better, but 3 & 4 did nowhere near enough right to justify the rest of the game being as awful as they are. All the games have huge flaws but I still don't see how 3 or 4 could be viewed as better than 2.

    • @dessadoo
      @dessadoo  ปีที่แล้ว +2

That’s fair. I do tend to have more fun with TM3 and 4, but that’s more to do with them being more forgiving than TM2. The depth and complexity to the gameplay is something I can’t take away from TM2. Just takes time to learn it, but the process of learning is BRUTAL

    • @hxclambfan
      @hxclambfan ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@dessadooyeah and to be fair, I do not sit down and try to get through the games the way you absolute legends have been here lately so opinions are drastically different from perspective. TM2 is absolutely the most brutal. And is easily on the plain of too hard. Minion is basically a code for easy mode but you go in there just swinging for the fences you can still end up getting rocked even using him. But I just don't enjoy 3 & 4 for more than a couple stages and I dislike most of the characters in 4 so that makes it worse. It plays better than 3 but the cast sucks so it's a toss up like which do you wanna give up?

I hope someone told you that you could play as Minion in TM2. It was the only way my 8 year old could've beaten the game. You don't fight a boss on the lava level if you play as Minion. I don't remember the codes to unlock Minion or Sweet Tooth in the character select. The locations for the codes are in New York off the side of the buildings and the other is the Honk Kong one in the subway on top the trains.
But I'm betting someone already told you that.

Tm isn't fighting games with cars
    ISN'T!
    Saying that advice on futhure
It's good to utilize some strategies from moderm tms...like insta turn with driving backward and shooting chaser
Differences between moderm tms and this ones are that there you have some resamblance to driving car insteed of glorryfied mechwarior with is tm black
All you need is to get use to ps1 controls...saying that i won't be syprised for anyone screaming for remake in head on fassion
Also i agree that i don't understand phylosophy behind caloing this empty field greates level...drive in movie is much more fun science more complex, climatic and dynamic:)
But there is one and best twisted metal and it's tm head on...why?
Because mr Grim throws special and napalm Barrel out of hand...ho cool is that!?
I wish for him making it with rockets as well:D

  • @AV57

TM2 was a product of its time and its reputation is due to its relative performance versus all TM games before TM Black. Every TM game before TM Black was seen as inferior to TM2 and fans wanted the franchise to return to TM2 levels. When it arguably got back to that level with Black, it was controversial, because Black was so much faster that TM2 fans often rejected it after a couple hours. But new TM fans sprouted out of just TM Black that never had a taste for the older TM games. And I think that’s why there’s this big divide between TM fans now. That being said, TM 2012 was the best.

I grew up with 2, I have a lot of fond memories of playing multiplayer with my dad as a kid. That being said, revisiting it does reveal that its very rough around the edges in that way only an early PS1 game can be. Black and Head On are way better in terms of mechanics and balance. Hell, even Small brawl controlled better. That being said, its still one of my favorites due to nostalgia.

I'm glad to see this game getting the turds it deserves for the way it punished us for trying (and I DO MEAN "TRYING") to enjoy The one game in the franchise that gets the most glaze. This game sucks at reading inputs, the cars handle like boats on ice, And certain special weapons are completely useless because of the shield like Mr. Slam and grasshopper. Ever since I mastered the input timing for the meter. Mr. Slam never seems to hurt me lol. Another thing, is it me or does twisted Metal? 2. Have the strongest machine guns in the franchise?

Cars like Twister and grasshopper are the true hard modes. I think if you want to have an easier time with the game, try the easier cars.
