This made me realize that the periphery is sorely neglected in Battletech media. The Concordate is actually extremely awesome and should be included in more of the games.
It always struck me as odd that there's no anti-spinward great periphery power, or anything at all really from the Marian Hegomony all the way to the on-again-off-again Oberon Confederation. I'd love to see more Deep Periphery stories, too.
That's partly why I think the 2018 Battletech storyline with the Aurigan stuff went over so well. The Taurians and Canopus are the big ones at the table politically and allowed both of them a little screen time. I wish we could get Battletech 2. For now BEX, BTA and Roguetech are great though.

You either die a hero or live to be a villian, then a hero, then a villian again, then a hero. Turns out a few hundred years is a long time for a state to both shine and stain.
@@kelltainer2448 The United States (The country) was awesome. The United States (the corporate asset) is unbelievable awful. Its government was bought out in the 50s, and the country died that day.
Now that, was a proper video essay! Being an ex conscript on reserves, I can both understand why Taurians have been forced to embrace national service - but horrified at the same time. At least my national service can be stated to be purely defensive in nature (i.e, if my country was invaded... I would volunteer regardless. So it makes no difference), so can imagine the despair of the average Taurian would have felt when being deployed to the Pleides Cluster during the Blakist era. Beyond personal emotions though, I think you have genuinely convinced me to love the Taurian Concordat as my favourite faction. Not because it is Space Texas - but because it genuinely reads like a real life state. The Concordat is built on beautiful ideals, on a willingness to explore, to embrace refugees, and attempt to serve its citizenry. These are ideals which each successive generations live up to, fight for, and very often fail to meet. Many of these failures exist because the political system is flawed, and because protectors are authoritarian leaders, in the same way the lords of the Inner Sphere are. Yet as long as these ideals are harkened back to, the Taurian state can recover and rebuild. And who knows, if the circumstances are right, and if the Taurians stay their course... perhaps they will see a golden age, making themselves a legitimate counter thesis to the Inner Sphere and the clans. Until then, my Mercenary Company Seonbi's Skirmishers (ex-capellans, changing allegiance during the Triple Alliance) remains the Taurian Concordat's most loyal janissaries.
I'll be honest, Grover Shraplen and that entire era of the Concordat's history is such a sad indictment of human nature. They've ran so long and so hard from the Terran Alliance, the Star League and the Federated Suns, they turned into the very monsters they sought to escape.
@@br7693t no real Taurian requires a Calderon to lead the State. If we lived by Samantha's principles we could have ol Buck McDaniels - you know that kind of famous drunk engineer on New Vandenberg? Yeah, the one who stopped the Liao raiders but didn't remember because he was to drunk to realize he stole a Thunderbolt off the line. - we could have him on Taurus as head of state and be fine. And frankly, plenty of corruption and madness in the Calderon line thank you. Or are you forgetting the end of the 3rd succession war and the Calderon paranoia of the Davion "invasion"?
And thanks to everyone in the community for the voice work! I was wondering if Tex wrote his segment as it was very much what we've come to expect from him. When you see what the Taurians became after the Reunification War its tragic as the preWar Taurians where actually amazing ..... RIP TRUE TAURIANS lost but not forgotten
I just wanted to say that this video did actually change my perception of the Taurians, Red. I was never really interested in them before because the common caricature of what they are as a faction made me believe they were a lot more one note than they really are. Their paranoia towards the Federated Suns is fun to meme on, but man, it's actually kind of a tragic now that I know where that paranoia lead their society, especially knowing how far it caused them to deviate from the ideals that the Concordat was built on. I was actually surprised how much I grew to like them by the end of it, I'm really rooting for them to not to fumble their reunification with the Protectorate going into the ilClan Era. It was really cathartic to see the Senior Marshal's statement at the end about not letting House Davion be the bogeyman it's been for centuries. I think it goes without saying, but I really liked this video. Thank you for putting so much effort into it. Even if I can't get my friends to watch it due to it's length, I'll be sure to share with them and with others what I've learned from it about the Taurians, and I'll continue to recommend your channel to people interested in BattleTech. Thanks again!
Thank you for a great video! One of my best friends is as diehard a FedSuns player as I am a Taurian. We remarked that a true tragedy of the setting is that the Taurians and Davions are about as alike as foes can get. They espouse many of the same virtues but, as happens, politics and war get the better of them.
Reviewing the material presented in this video cements a conclusion that I had reached when I first fell in love with Battletech lore along with the giant stompy robots: The human element is a terrifying mixture of dichotomies, and one that makes for ripping good stories/lore if one knows how to draw upon it. The Taurians, much like the rest of the Battletech universe at its best, is a wonderful reflection of the human tendency to reach the greatest heights and the darkest lows in all of its alloyed splendor. Thank you to everyone who put in all that hard work. I thoroughly enjoyed the video.
Anyone want to complain about the length of this video? Because I have no complaints. This was a wonderful deep dive into the Concordat and Protectorate. It also has helped me revise and clean up some of the lore of a homebrew mercenary unit from that part of the periphery I've played with since the 1990s.
I had absolutely no idea there was even this much information available on the Taurians, and the video didn't even feel padded out. I think it's one of your best works 👏
Holy video length, Red. I'll watch this later. Also, remember fellow Taurians: You're free...free to do as the state says to do! EDIT: After finally watching everything. Yes, EVERYTHING... I understand why Red thinks the Davions are a den of snakes. Holy shit, did they ever fuck over the Concordat again and again. Unfortunately, even when the Davions fucked off, the Concordat was, somewhat understandably, extremely paranoid. To the point of self harm to the state. And joining with the Cappies and the Wobbies.. I mean.. oof. Glad it ended on a happier note, though. Hopefully, the Concordat can fix itself and not fall into the same old traps.
Great production Red, I'm all for the longer form content as it's perfect for sitting down and painting some mechs. Also the contributors did an amazing job (especially Mechanical Frog and Sven!), I'm always glad to hear the BattleTech community coming together for a project like this.
The Judith Mora quote at 1:24:30 reminds me so much of British imperial attitude towards colonizing Africa and the Americas and the resistance they would get from local populations. With this idea in mind that they were "bringing lights and civilization to the Savage" that's what that quote reminds me of.
I love the logic of people. Timothy Calderon: "... and now that we are finally free of the tyranny that central representative democracy brings, we can now build a society on a system which truly hears the voice of its people ..." People: "Anarcho Syndicalism?"; "Anarcho Capitalism?";"A technocracy?";"A federal democracy with strong emphasize on local government like Switzerlannd did?" Timothy Calderon: "... Feudalism ..." Epic work Red!
There is just something I love about the Taurian Concordant and the Magistry of Canopus. It is like the only real long term friendship in Battletech and it consists of a state that has no chill and the other the nice and reasonable one.
@@BigRed40TECH Hey, in Canopus’s defense. They’ve never been the aggressor in conflicts between the two States. Now as for Canopian culpability in aiding Capellan warcrimes during the St. Ives War, Jihad, Victoria War, and Capellan Crusades…
yea but when canopuses small army does fight they dont fuckin mess around. less the insane crazy of tuareans but more very professional asymmetrical warfare meant to make you get the fuck off their lawn.
Thank you Big Red, this was simply amazing! My faction since I started playing Battletech has been the Taurian Concordat so I was super excited when it was announced you were doing this video and you did not disappoint.
Amazing video one of the best pieces of content made in the history of battle tech. My wife listening over my shoulder didn’t realize it was a fictional history, once she heard dates and actively listened. Just outstanding in ever regard. Bravo
Wow Red this is an exhaustive (in a good way) look at the Taurians! I am impressed at how thorough a look you give us whike keeping us enthralled. Thanks for keeping my mind occupied during a very boring posting today!
From 2pm to 7pm, this took up half my Sunday, and now... I wanna play a whole career of Rougetech with the Taurians for however long I can stay alive for.
If you really think about it though, most of the wars and atrocities since the First Succession War could be traced back to Amaris. If Amaris had actually been a legitimate advisor to Cameron and didn’t take over, the SLDF would’ve never gone on exodus which means the Clans wouldn’t exist, the Succession Wars wouldn’t have broken out, and ComStar wouldn’t be a cultish puppet master intent on grinding down the Successor States and pushing back technology.
So at first I was intimated by the length of this video and it took me 4 days to watch it but I am so happy I did. I was only partially aware of the history of the Concordat with most of my knowledge coming from novels. This was eye opening and gave me a greater view of the region. Videos like this are the main reason I can not and WILL NOT pick one specific faction as my fave. Each has its ups and downs. Characters that are heroic, evil and just plain stupid that bring life to the Battletech universe. Thank you to Big Red and all his contributors of this video.
This is the best video you have ever done. And I do appreciate the fact you gave the concordant a fair shake. As a person that plays a concordant in most of my time of war games and tablet top games. Thank you for doing such a great job again.
Finally finished this massive video and let me say, my entire view of the Taurians has changed. This may have catapulted them into my top 3 periphery powers. Amazing work Red, and I'd love to see one on the Canopians eventually!
If I haven’t been on here yet to comment; Thank you again for this. Just saw on your live stream that there might be some negative comments. You killed this one, it’s great.
No negativity my friend! Just pointing out on stream that some people aren't into 5 hour videos, and some people over time just move away from some channels. :)
took me 2 days to finish this monster of a video, but imo it was well worth it. i already was rather sympathetic to the taurians, as well as their story up to the events of the HBS battletech game. but youve turned me into a definite fan now. Not because of "leaders" like Grover Shaplan, but how the Taurian people acted in spite of him. The alliance with the WoB is a bloody stain that will take centuries to fully recover from imo, but if they can keep on the course Dormu has set them on, they will achieve it. And who knows, maybe theyll even reclaim the relative strength and pride they had before the Reunification War, in time
This was absolutely incredible work. The Taurians have always been my favorite faction in the setting. I'm really happy that they now have excellent representation on TH-cam. Thank you so much for this incredible work!
Davion is always happy to pretend to be benevolent, they leave out the dictator part. Remind me again who was at the vanguard of the Star League land grab?
@@mikewaterfield3599 And that makes them different from basically anyone else in this universe how...? Only ones who are really different are Kurita and they're just honest about wanting landgrabs.

Edgelords stop being edgelords when they realize that none of their ideas are original or good.
I don’t know, the French had their teeth kicked in by everyone since the French and Indian war. Even Napoleon had to make Bs propaganda coins to pretend his Egyptian campaign was not a disaster. Meanwhile the Taurians might have lost after twenty years to the Star League at the height of their power, yet the seem to still be alive and kicking despite that odds stacked against them.
@@TheMock5000on what metric? Are you say that because of the French association? As a colonial power France rivaled the British, when the French government collapsed in WWII the French people kept fighting.
I never looked into the periphery much in the past and I have realized I missed out. This was an awesome video. Keep doing you and put out more of this great content. Much appreciated
Loved the video, well worth the wait. My friend explained the Taurians to me as those who will staunchly say no, as they'd seen the cost of yes. And, from how miserable their lows in the setting are, it seems so.
Hell of an overview. Learned more about the Concordat than ever before. I knew they were prime examples of the 'hippoty, hoppity, get off my property' type and their favorite explosive was nuclear, but I never knew they were such boogieman types to the point where their paranoia was a part of their cultural identity, to the point that it effectively crippled them. Long video but fun.
Absolutely Beautiful vid on one of my favorite factions in the setting! It really reminds me why i got into battletech in the first place. Its often full pf violence and cynicism, but theirs also hope and optimism that can and does peak through too, humanity be like sometimes. I know the Taurians aren't really focused on much in lore, but here's hoping their fortunes continue to improve. Thanks for making such a thoughtful detailed vid.
Brother, I just wanted to thank you again for this absolutely spectacular video. You have really set the highest of benchmark with your BattleTech content. I am currently on my third listening and I am sure I will return to it again once this time is complete. I am all about the Magistracy of Canopus and the Taureans, so I hope you find the time and energy to do a similar installment for the MoC next year. You have brought a stranger from Downunder such happiness through your work... not just this video, but so many others too.
5 hours! That was heck of a marathon. Great video Red. The Taurians aren't among my favorite factions, but it was still a hell of a ride and I at least have a better understanding of this faction.
That was freaking amazing you did a phenomenal job man! You spun a narrative and story that was not just informative but stirred emotions. Remarkable work.
I'll admit that I'm probably in the minority as far as my opinion on longform content, but I have no problem with long videos. They're great to listen to while stocking shelves at Walmart and it helps to pass the time. Now I know that asking for more long videos isn't feasible, but if a project makes a 3+ hour video, you won't hear me complaining about it. Also, this video was awesome! I learned quite a lot. And as far as "Space Texas" is concerned, I would disagree in at least one aspect. Specifically during the Reunification war, I'd call the Taurians "Space Afghanistan", simply due to the fact that they held off the Star League for 20 years. But yeah, keep up the great work and thank you for genuinely amazing and well made content
Thank you for the gift membership! What an incredible video and story, it's a simple statement with more depth than I can put to words. What an awesome job Big Red, please keep it up!
Thank you, Big Red! I have gotten more interested in the Taurians in the last couple years. Having an in depth history is awesome! And I love when channels like yours, Sven Van Der Plank, and more do collaboration work. The extra familiar voices are always a wonderful touch.

Homie this is an absolute Masterpiece. And this kind of stuff if why the battletech world has swiftly dragged me down into the deeps over the last year or so. The depth and detail of this world is.....beyond anything i've ever experienced. The enthusiasm of the community, and especially creators like yourself, is a credit to the whole ecosystem
Biggest respect for this, you are a madman in the best way. Took me a few times to get all the way through, watching this in "episodes" but it gave me a new respect for the Taurians. I was originally introduced to them in the HBS Battletech game and had a very negative view of them because of it with little knowledge about them and their history. I still dislike them, at least for their history but I think for the future I might warm up to them. Amazing job, as usual and I love your videos. Sure it's long, that just means I get to enjoy it for longer. Keep up the amazing work.
The HBS BT game is great. The campaign story is horrible. and broke massive amounts of canon. Then the PTB got sick of the whining and decided to make it canon. Which really just made it all worse.
It was very well done. I enjoyed listening to this very much! I really appreciate the time and effort and work you put in to this project. You and those who assisted you, really brought it to life! Excellent job! Thanks! 👍👍😁😁❤❤
I am so glad I waited to watch the 2nd half of this vid for when stuff finally calmed down for me, and that I was finally in the right head space to sit down and listen again. I learned a lot, and I look forward to reading my Handbook Major Periphery states, and field report, Periphery more. This was great, and I look forward to painting some more calderon and taurian forces with my merc kickstarter.
My favorite part of the Reunification War, "The Taurians wish to fight as if we are monsters, we shall give them a monster to fight" *points Furlough at the Concordat*
They were monsters, before and after Amos. The Reunification War was a naked, greedy land grab, for which the Star League was happy to raze planets, grind countless resources and people to dust. The Taurians had every right to fight as they did. The video showed that there are certainly hypocrisies and flaws in the Concordat, but for most of its history, it provided well for its people, and the people of the Concordat had a right to self defense, including defending their nation, if they thought it their best chance.
@@mikewaterfield3599 some people absolutely are monsters in BT. Amaris was pretty objectively all around evil. The reunification war was even by BT standards a bloodbath driven solely by spheroid imperialism and disregard for human life.
This was bloody phenomenal. I really enjoyed listening to this, hope you can take a bit of a break after this marathon. And all the people who did lines for you were the icing on the cake.
Thank you for putting together such a great video on one of the more interesting factions in the Periphery. It has shifted my thoughts on them. Awesome Job!
I finished the whole thing! Beautiful video on my favorite nation. Painting my Taurian Concordat based mercenary unit whist listening was a great experience
This is a huge and well written video, extremely well done Red! I love the through research of the history of this faction of the Battletech universe. My only request would be for maps over MW5 video, many may not know where these worlds are on the map and showing how territories changed hands.
I'm not a great mapper, and I feel the battle sequences add more gravity than the maps do, at least in terms of how I weave stories. I use maps, but often as a means of framing an era. For great map-work, I'd recommend looking towards Sven's videos, he does a spectacular job.
I've been told that the reasons the Taurians got hit hard with the evil/stupid stick particularly from the Clan Invasion era (but it was bad before that) and onwards since the devs didn't like how they were basically becoming the actual good guys of the setting or at least that's how people were starting to see them in contrast to the main factions. The HBS game didn't do them any more favors either, making them bad guys in the past as well.
@@BigRed40TECH Before Thomas went nuts, what evils did they commit (by BT standards in particular) outside of that brief war with Canopus that was just a couple of raids, nothingburgers by Inner Sphere standards. And a raid on New Abilene, iirc. All the nasty stuff happens later chronologically. I don't mind being proven wrong, but they're otherwise a really great people if you use Thomas Calderon as a line in the sand between when they were fairly close to being "the good guys" and messed up.
@@BigRed40TECH Sure, but I did say I was using him as the dividing line. It doesn't change much when exactly in his rule it really went bad since we both agree it was bad in general.
@@BigRed40TECH I don't think I have it in me to ever consider any formalized state a "good guy". Too much real world experience with that. But, all things considered, I'd still rather side with the Taurians (or the Calderon Protectorate later).
Absolutely awesome video BigRed! Even as a huge Taurian fan I didn't know all of the information presented! One little thing: The Concordat Jaegers were not destroyed during operation Matador, the third Battalion held Ridgebrook when the First Lancers reinforced them at the end of the war, though they were badly mauled. They are one of the units I play and when I picked them I made sure I was picking a unit that existed in all the eras so I could use them in all eras of games, haha.
That was an incredible video. My only regret is that I coukdn't watch it in one sitting. So glad you made thos, I came away with a strong love and appreciation of the Concordat.

Exactly.
I agree with your assessment of the situation. It's was evitable, since human nature is a large part of what makes BT what it is.
Taurian fanboy here, and I completely agree. I can't be on their side after the Calderon Protectorate split off. I'm looking forward to the reunion.
A valuable lesson for any state, let alone the Wolverines...
Knowing we are T-minus about a week until the BPL Twycross video was a great way to cap this amazing deep dive.....I think either this brings a whole new meaning to "deep dive" or it is simply the epitome of it. Thanks again Red & to everyone that made this happen!
I'm incredibly grateful for everyone who contributed to it. But Tex especially, as he took that to an extra level.
From what I’ve seen of Tex, he does not have a setting less than 100% effort. For that matter I’m enjoying your videos as well, Red. Even if you dislike the clan I play. (I think it may be more the writer they had for some of the luck) Though I forgot your opinion on the Magistracy.

Many thanks. I recommend taking a look at the great people who helped contribute to this video however in very direct ways, Of Mechs and Men, Bungletech, Tex, Mech Frog, Sven (who had a GREAT release today), The B33F, and Critical Rocket.
Their is a lot of great channels and people in the community, including a lot of Demo Agents and others who are deserving of support and praise.
When you see what the Taurians became after the Reunification War its tragic as the preWar Taurians where actually amazing ..... RIP TRUE TAURIANS lost but not forgotten
Nah they're still good. Especially in the current year of the setting.
"You Taurians sure are a contentious people!" - some Davion guy, in the long ago past
House Calderon: ”You just made an enemy for life!”
What a monumental video Red! Unbelievably proud to have your voice in the community. Congratulations on the premiere!
Yah Red has made himself a Paragon of the Btech community.
Check out the resources post! I used like, 20 books to comprise this. An enormous amount of materials from all eras. It was a ton of work.
Timothy Calderon: "... and now that we are finally free of the tyranny that central representative democracy brings, we can now build a society on a system which truly hears the voice of its people ..."
People: "Anarcho Syndicalism?"; "Anarcho Capitalism?";"A technocracy?";"A federal democracy with strong emphasize on local government like Switzerlannd did?"
Timothy Calderon: "... Feudalism ..."
Epic work Red!
Tim knew what was up. lmao
Clearly he read his Hans Herman Hoppe.
There is just something I love about the Taurian Concordant and the Magistry of Canopus. It is like the only real long term friendship in Battletech and it consists of a state that has no chill and the other the nice and reasonable one.
Their friendship is definitely on-again-off-again though.
@@BigRed40TECH Most other "on-again-off-again" friendships in the Inner Sphere involve radioactive smoking craters though.
Distance and logistics is the only reason it didn't. lol
@@BigRed40TECH Hey, in Canopus’s defense. They’ve never been the aggressor in conflicts between the two States.

Amazing video one of the best pieces of content made in the history of battle tech. My wife listening over my shoulder didn’t realize it was a fictional history, once she heard dates and actively listened. Just outstanding in ever regard. Bravo
Amazing work Red, a masterwork of Battletech history. The IP and we the fans are extremely lucky to have access to your work.
Random person: Speaks with a british accent
Every Taurian: Frantically doing range calculations for their artillery
Funnily enough, the Camerons probably had Canadian accents XD
"Cameron, Davion, what's the difference?"
-Taurians probably
Wow Red this is an exhaustive (in a good way) look at the Taurians! I am impressed at how thorough a look you give us whike keeping us enthralled. Thanks for keeping my mind occupied during a very boring posting today!
From 2pm to 7pm, this took up half my Sunday, and now... I wanna play a whole career of Rougetech with the Taurians for however long I can stay alive for.
The more I learn about the Star League, the more I think maybe Amaris had a point.

Holy crap, thanks TH-cam for not letting me know this masterpiece dropped until today

No negativity my friend! Just pointing out on stream that some people aren't into 5 hour videos, and some people over time just move away from some channels. :)
Just finished the video, it's the right length to be good and informative, please do more.
took me 2 days to finish this monster of a video, but imo it was well worth it. i already was rather sympathetic to the taurians, as well as their story up to the events of the HBS battletech game. but youve turned me into a definite fan now.

5 hours...this is insane!
Also just what I needed

That was freaking amazing you did a phenomenal job man! You spun a narrative and story that was not just informative but stirred emotions. Remarkable work.
Best content yet. Do more like this, please. I adored every minute.
A thank you from this citizen of the Taurian Concordat for this.

Thank you, I really appreciate the kind words.
Thanks! 👍👍😁😁❤❤

Excellent work ,I enjoyed hearing the fire loving amphibian and dark trousers equipped one as well as others ,it was a grand effort of storytelling
Well Done. Amazing work. Thank you for your efforts, You mentioned the Fronc Reaches. My little heart was all a flutter.
My favorite part of the Reunification War, "The Taurians wish to fight as if we are monsters, we shall give them a monster to fight" *points Furlough at the Concordat*
You pretend the Star League were not monsters. They were the personification of the worst totalitarian state any dystopic IP ever dreamed of.
BS. The spheroids were monsters.
@@Tom_Cruise_Missile no one is quite a monster by 40k standards but there really are no “good guys” in the BT fiction.

2 small errors in it, means that the WHM IIC is probably better, but I definitely put my best foot forward :P

Great Video. Thank you for all your hard work. Thank you to all that contributed to this Video.
At no point did I read any of the Taurians materials and see them as good guys. All the way back to the 80's. lol
@@BigRed40TECH Before Thomas went nuts, what evils did they commit (by BT standards in particular) outside of that brief war with Canopus that was just a couple of raids, nothingburgers by Inner Sphere standards. And a raid on New Abilene, iirc.
