Thank you. This just worked on our French door GE with bottom freezer. It took both ways to get it going. After I plugged it back in and pushed top buttons nothing happened. Pushed the freezer switch and the freezer started working. It took five minutes for upper fan to come on. I put an AC thermometer in and temp was 75 in the house. Put the appliance on turbo cool for two hours and temp dropped to below 40 degrees. We turned turbo cool off and reloaded the fridge. Temp is still where it needs to be. You saved me at least 200 dollars for the repair company we scheduled for three days from now. Gonna cancel them in the am. Thank you for this clear concise valuable tutorial.

I was stressing bad, just went grocery shopping yesterday, cleaned and bleached the fridge out, been stocking up the freezer, fresh vegs, spent all last night chopping and prepping for an easy week of dinners and then it stopped working sometime today. The reset on both frig and freezer did not work, unplugged for 5 minutes and I hear a beautiful motor in the back of the fridge. I can't thank you enough for posting this video. It's 9 at night, no one is open and the one repairman that said they did 24 hr service did not answer. What a relief, now I just have to stay up another hour or so to see if it is cooling. Thank you so much!
Michael, I'm joining the chorus to sing your praises. I have a 2007 GE side by side that experienced a power surge this morning and the compressor was not working. I tried your approach once with no luck, and then a second time, and again it appeared it was not going to work. In the meantime, I was on the phone with an appliance guy who wanted me to take a look at the motherboard and I did that and it looked OK, and literally at that moment I heard the lovely sound of a compressor. It seems like patience was the key. It took about 20 or 25 minutes after the second attempt with the reset. I'm gonna go buy a surge protector today, and see if that helps prevent future issues. Thanks again for your tip!

Well thank you! You delayed me spending $2,000 literally right before we were heading out the door to go to Lowes lol! I was looking up the specs on our current Whirlpool size and your video popped up!

Thank you so much for this! Unplugging for 5 minutes fixed my issue. It has been storming a lot here in Florida and the power has been going out for a few seconds every time it rains. That must’ve cause the issue.
This video saved us from buying a new refrigerator. I did all the steps and left it overnight. Yesterday the fridge started warm and by the end of the night the freezer was making ice and the fridge is back to 39 degrees as of this morning. Thanks!!
Hey everyone, sharing what worked for me. The reset and breaker reset didn't work. In the freezer some ice has formed over the vents within the freezer. I used a blow dryer to melt all that off and it works again. Thanks Michael, for helping people out there. Just pitching in! Cheers. 😊

Big thank you your my lifesaver. I just bought a new fridge and I was wondering why it's not cooling but after came cross your video. I decided to give it a try and bomb, it instantly worked
Very cool & we appreciate you sharing this. That’s odd that you had to perform a reset on a new refrigerator however anything out of the ordinary such as a momentary power surge or outage can cause the control board to go into emergency cutoff mode. Hopefully many stress free days ahead for you for your refrigerator. 😎👍🔧🔩
The 1st procedure (without unplugging it for 5 minutes) fixed our GE Profile side by side freezer/refrigerator. I was skeptical it would work because for the 1st couple hours the freezer only dropped from 11 to 8 degrees Fahrenheit. The refrigerator only dropped from 39 to 37 degrees. However, after 16-17 hours the freezer was at -1 F and refrigerator at 33 F. We cannot thank you enough!!! We did have an intense thunderstorm with numerous lightening strikes close by. From your analysis it caused a sharp power fluctuation or power loss. We no longer hear strange groans and loud fans turning. The unit is quiet like new again. Thanks so much!!!
David, thanks for watching & sharing your experience. A slight power fluctuation will definitely cause a trip in the system. That’s awesome to hear you are back up and running with no issues. Awesome job making it a DIY project!!! Let us know if you have any questions, us DIYers need to stick together!!!
This refrigerator is going on 20 years. It sounds new (quiet) now! For about 6-8 months the fan in the back of the freezer(?) sounded like a turbo-prop taking off for 5-10 minutes, then, it would quit. I feel like I bought a new appliance... Thanks so very much, again!!! Double-checking to make sure I've subscribed.
@@davidk.ringel4321 That is great to hear & again, we appreciate you sharing this. My poor wife has to deal with me fixing everything. She will say, “I think the dishwasher is failing”... My reaction...”Nope, a few new parts & it will be like new...🤣” My wife’s reaction, “🙄”
Excellent. I have an Australian Shepherd and Eve goes anywhere she wants. I hadn't cleaned the cooling tubes in the front in quite some time. My Whirlpool Gold stopped cooling over the course of a few days. I cleaned up the front and did this full reset and the compressor is now on. What was 'weird' was after I turned the breaker back on I heard some 'chattering' and another loud noise. Before when it wasn't cooling I'd hear a 1 second hum that would repeat about every 60 seconds. Kinda like the compressor was getting a 'kick start' but wouldn't engage. Anyways... Thanks for the video. Boom! Out go the lights!
We had a power outage that lasted a few hours. The refrigerator hasnt been the same since. Freezer has been fine. Trying this method out hoping for the best.
That’s a bummer to hear. Power outages are out of your control in almost every case unfortunately. The results cause havoc on your electrical devices and appliances. Any update on your refrigerator?
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders I tried the reset and unplug several times but nothing. I checked the relay and it's fine. So I decided to crack open the panels and the freezer coils are iced over. About to crack open the refrigerator part as well. Im hoping it just needs to defrost

@@davirasdarkside4263 Thanks for watching, any update? Is the refrigerator completely dead or is it powering up and just not cooling to proper temperatures? In addition, we would perform this reset procedure a second and third time… As your refrigerator may take additional reset attempts to fully reconfigure.
Michael - I enjoyed your video on resetting the mother board. My residential fridge in my RV is subject to power fluctuations quite often. But what causes it to warm up in the first place? I have a Kitchen Aid built-in and can’t really figure it out. Had the Freon recharged and filter replaced. Was working ok for about a month then started warming up again. Tech came out and put in some type of sealer cuz he couldn’t detect an accessible leak. That Didn’t work. Went out and bought a new fridge and while raising up the jacks to remove old fridge I plugged in the new fridge to get it ready. The next day I check old fridge temp and it’s working again. What I mean by that is the temp came down from 55 to 40. And the freezer came down from 40 to 15. I keep a thermometer in the fridge to monitor temp. While moving the old fridge out a bunch of dirty water spilled out as well. It was kind of mildewy too. I am going to keep it plugged in in the garage to monitor it some more. It’s 17 years old but it was a $6k fridge back in 2004. Any ideas on what could be going on?

This video helped me to restore my garage refrigerator; however, I need to use the trick everyday or so to initiate cooling. Any suggestions as to what might be causing this?
@@trlev Thanks for watching, we are honored to help. That’s a bummer that the refrigerator is requiring a reset every day. This can be caused by intermittently working control board. Our recommendation is to continue to reset it over the next few days if it requires it. After a few days, we recommend unplugging unit for 30 minutes to allow refrigerator to perform a full system reset throughout entire electrical system. 🧰
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders I’ve tried that as well, but it eventually shuts off. So, it works if I hit the switch but only runs for a short time before shutting down and remaining off until I hit switch again. @@trlev Thanks for the follow up, we definitely understand your thoughts and focus. Pinpointing the exact part will be the best route. Hey great video. It works for me to reset the fridge but after about a week of operation the freezer will frost over and warm up and the food becomes unfrozen so I have to repeat your process and it gets it going again. I’ve vacuumed all around the compressor and coils. Just wondering what it could be. The possible culprits could be the control board or the switch relay on the compressor or something else. What do you think? Could one of those hard relay switch kits help? Any idea would help and thanks for the video !
Good morning, thanks for watching. We would start with the relay as it may be in its early stages of failure…thus acting intermittently. Control board is possible however not as likely. Looking forward to hearing back from you.
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders awesome. Much appreciate your reply. In that case I will order an amp clamp from Amazon and begin testing of the relay and if it is indeed starting to go I will buy a replacement for it and put in a new start relay. @@yycshawn123 Thanks for the reply, the part itself should last up to 10 years if refrigerator is placed in normal operating temperatures as opposed to out in a 100*+ garage or freezing cold garage. 😎👍
@@prosafetytrainings2013 Thanks for the reply, we are indeed. That’s a bummer to hear. You can perform this reset procedure a second or third time and see if that helps. If it does not help, it may be time to direct your attention to the internal control board.
I have a Whirlpool. It quit making ice a few weeks ago and we also noticed that the main compartment is not getting as cold as it used to. so I put it down as low as it would go..33* in the settings. We have a thermometer inside but it will not go any lower than 40*. Do you think this could be the problem? I had a repair man out yesterday and he claimed it was getting cold enough inside but said we needed a new ice maker so its on order but never seemed to fix the 40* problem. He said my thermometer might be off. but I double checked it with a digital thermometer and it was also reading 40*
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders I can’t find the exact reset procedure for my model. It’s a French door model with produce tray underneath and freezer on the bottom. Ice and water dispenser on the left side. So It has multiple door buttons given the French doors that shut the lights off so I couldn’t really do it that way. I did shut the breaker off to it for 10 min. And it does seem colder after 24 hrs. Someone had said I need to unplug 24 hours. Do I need to wait that long? I would need to obviously clear it out. The longer option isn't the worst idea bc it will get rid of some frost, but I was just curious if that's how long a reset needs. Thank you again for your advice!

Good morning Nelson, happy new year. Have you performed this reset procedure? You will also want to ensure that both the refrigerator door and freezer door are fully closed to a point where they press their respective switches shown in this video to the up and engaged configuration. It took about 20 or 25
minutes after the second attempt with the reset. I'm gonna go buy a surge protector today, and see if that helps prevent future issues.
Thanks again for your tip!

In addition, we would perform this reset procedure a second and third time… As your refrigerator may take additional reset attempts to fully reconfigure.
Michael - I enjoyed your video on resetting the mother board. My residential fridge in my RV is subject to power fluctuations quite often.
I did a similar reset about a year ago when my fan motor behind the freezer section wasn't coming on and that did the trick.
My refrigerator section is warm (freezer is -12 deg) & I can see the fan isn't spinning.
I did the unplug/click the light switch 3 x but the fan still isn't spinning. Is there a different sequence for that ?
Hey Joe, we appreciate you sharing this. This is the main reset procedure however it’s possible that unplugging unit for 5 minutes may reboot fan.

A defrost timer maybe. It thawed out when you unplugged it? Easy to test and replace with a screwdriver at the front bottom kick panel.

@@trlev
Thanks for watching, we are honored to help.

Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. We have done a few things with whirlpool however not the 4218.
Have you tried this reset procedure?
What happens if you just push the power button on if they have it?

This fix worked momentarily as I can hear it start to run again, but when I try and open the fridge it all shuts off again and goes back to not cooling. Any ideas?
Thanks for watching & we have seen this in the past. Try another reset, try it a 3rd time tomorrow or next day.
If it continues to shut off, the compressor is likely in its final 6 months of life. Please keep us posted.
👍✨✨It Work The lights were Blinking and Compressor not Working turn Off Breakers for 10 minutes It Work thanks
I have a whirpool and had a storm, mine has double minus s sighs and two minus signs lines where the temp is. Also I have 2 refrigirator swtches and one in the freezer, can you help me? Also the frezer light was not working so i was hiting it manual to get the light to come on, Could I have turned my freezer and fridge off by accident? I did subscribe and ring both bells :)
My fridge section just keeps cooling without restraint. Is this a feasible fix? We do have many mini outages in our area. I've tried it doesn't seem to do anything on my WRS571CIDM02. Is there any indicator that it works on the panel? This is an updated electronic version of the fridge. I've also ordered a replacement defrost thermostat figured I'd start there.
Thanks for watching & welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. The defrost termination thermostat is the 1st place to start & almost always fixes this issue. Please keep us posted.

Hi Michael.... trying to troubleshoot my french door whirlpool fridge. It suddenly stopped cooling, and seems to only run when the doors are open. Once you shut the doors, it's silent with no fans running. Any ideas? I tried to reset it this way, but seems the same. Help!
Good morning & thanks for watching. We recommend unplugging refrigerator and leaving it unplugged for 5 minutes.
After 5 minutes, plug refrigerator back in & see if this helps.

THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!! This totally worked!!
How to defrost whirlpool refrigerator. Side by side refrigerator.
Thanks

Thanks for watching. If you don’t have a frost/ice removal scraper, you may need to unplug refrigerator for an hour to allow frost to melt so you can remove it.

Love your coffee! ;-)
Good video but what if the reset doesn’t work? I have a 2.5 yr old whirlpool that’s not cooling
Thanks for watching, it may take a second reset attempt to fix issue. If that doesn’t work, it may need a new compressor.
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders thanks, I’ll try it again. What about the start relay and capacitor?

Thank you so much! I have a different fridge but you gave me the idea to restart my fridge and I was able to! I think I figured it out! The water filter light came back on so I think that was why it wasn't cooling.

You are very welcome, we appreciate you watching & sharing this. Hope all is well.
Tried these fixes with a whirlpool - no luck - just getting the two dashed lines of death (meaning display mode/no cooling) followed user manual to repeatedly press the minus sign on both fridge and freezer - no luck - threw the breaker for 5 and 10 minutes off - no luck. Any help Michael? Thanks! WRB329DMBM01
Thanks for watching & sharing this, welcome to the DIY Raptor Club. Sounds like you’ve done all the reset procedures.
We would try unplugging refrigerator from outlet for a minimum of 30 minutes. That sounds like a long time however refrigerator will stay very cold if doors are kept closed...however your refrigerator is warming up as we speak.
After 30 minutes, plug refrigerator back in and see if this full system reset boots the control board back into gear.
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders Thank you so much for the reply - did end up turning all power off for 6 hours before throwing power back on - no luck still. Any other suggestions or just broken? ordered a new electronic board today.
