What's less known about the slave trade is that the Portuguese were the first to set up shop here in the late 15th hundred and they did capture a lot of slave before we finally we able to kick them out. They moved to Mozambique (neighbouring country) and captured a lot of slaves from there to the Americas, mainly Brazil. There's even a slave ship wreck from Mozambique that was recently discovered off the coast of South Africa. The Dutch then came in the mid-17th century and they did practice slavery in the Cape. The British followed soon after and they practiced slavery in Natal. The Brits and the Dutch mainly imported slaves from Asia to avoid them running away, but some Africans would still be captured and sold in the Americas. There's a scene in the first episode of Shaka Zulu where the physician says "they are the wandering Jews of Africa. Fleeing from pharaoh Shaka to the hands of the Babylonian slave traders in the Cape". He was referring to the natives who were chained in a dungeon looking like they were awaiting a slaving ship to dock in Cape Town and sold off. It's a TV show, not too factual; but it shows that even in the early 19th century, before the Brits abolished the slave trade, the was some natives who were captured for slavery. Of course not as significant as with West Africa and Congo, but it did happen and you are a living proof of it

I am sotho in the FreeState, South Africa and we are about an hour or less drive from Lesotho. We are separated by the Maluti Mountains and initially, the whole FreeState borders were the King Moshoeshoe's territory and I can assure you that the Lesotho nation is not growing on a slow rate. People here literally have illegal borders where they just walk and cross some lakes to get into South Africa. They have children with South Africans, which ultimately become South African and no one notices

Wow! Double Wow! Another excellent reaction video. As a South African I know a little bit about Lesotho history and also about Basotho culture, and even though I knew about the Lesotho Highlands Water project, my mind was blown learning that so many Basotho themselves lack decent access to running water..
Certainly the Lesotho and South African politicians and engineers who thrashed out the dam project deal should have included a plan that ensured making water more accessible to the general population of Lesotho.

In the movie, Cry Freedom, the biography showed part of Lesotho where Donald Woods had sought out refuge from the British embassy for him and his family. This was after Steve Biko's death, a year after June 16 protest. His life and children's lives were in danger by the state's security for befriending Steve Biko.
Steve Biko was acted by Denzel Washington and Donald Woods acted by Kelvin Kline

Acording to my cultural oral history 250 years ago King Mlambo helped King Moshoeshoes get His kingdom from his brother and make an aliance aliances with King Shaka.
Suggesting that 1) there was a nation a monarch and a lineage as well as culture (which takes years to develop)
    2) There was never a war between the basotho and King Shaka.
This is why you find Nhlapos in Lesotho and many provinces in South Africa.
King Moshoeshoe offered the Nhlapo King land within Lesotho.

Lesotho, Botswana and Swaziland are basically South Africa.. The only thing separating us is Borders and Government, other than that people just walk in and walk out without nobody noticing because we have the same cultures, we speak the same languages (Sotho, Tswana and Swati) and we look the same and our English accents are the same except for when the other 3 countries speak their native languages, its the same languages we speak in south africa but theirs is just deep or old😂😂

Correction: the unrest during Lifaqane/Mfecane wars was mot bcs of King Shaka (Bayethe🙏🏿). It was bcs of foreign western forces that showed up causing all sorts of havoc amongst the tribes.
Fact is, there has always been peace and great respect between the Bantu tribes in this area (Sotho, Zulu, Xhosa).

Hi guys, I am a Mosotho born and bred in Lesotho. The accessibility of water comments in the video is half factual. My grandfather is chief and water is abundant in Lesotho villages but not as individual household running water. The villages do have a common water tap for consumption and rivers and dams are freely accessible to anyone to use, either for irrigation or however they want to use it. As an agricultural land, these dams and rivers do get used for that. The most important thing is we don't pay for water usage in Lsotho. If one can afford to have a borehole in their yards for personal household use and run the water into their houses, they can do so, which is what my family did. We do have running water in the house from the borehole we drilled.

    • @ntateMarete
      @ntateMarete 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

True indeed.. where i live there is not dam or river close by so we rely almost exclusively on borehole water. It helps that our aquifer is easily replenished and never runs out of water no matter how much we abuse it.. however i think the argument is specifically with LHDA water, Katse, Mohale blah blah blah. The locals are prohibited from using that water especially closer to the dams. Ppl in Mokhotlong, Katse and Mohale experience this... but water is abundant in the general view..

Lesotho is not the only country that experiences snowfall. Algeria, Morroc, and of course, us South africans do have snow almost every year. Lesotho is just the coldest place in africa due to its high altitude. Hence, they are called the mountain kingdom. Wearing blankets as their apparel signifies all that.

During the Second World War the then Protectorate of Basutoland sent many fine soldiers who saw action in North Africa, the Middle East and Italy to help in the war effort. By 1940 Nazi Germany had overrun France and was now preparing to invade Britain. But first it had to elliminate the Royal Air Force. The Ensuing air battle was named "The Battle of Britain" after Winston Churchill's famous speech. Britain had to win or it was "game over". Basutoland, even though then, one of the poorest regions in the world, addressed the question: "How can we help". The King made a national appeal for donations and with the money collected they were able to pay for the production of 24 Spitfires, the legendary fighter of the Royal Airforce. THe "Spitfire Heritage Foundation" has donated a real-size copy of a Spitfire which is on display in Maseru as a gesture of gratitude to the people of Lesotho. Aid also moved in the other direction. Sometimes these Spitfires are depicted on the Basuto blankets, a matter of great national pride.

Moshoeshoe was a diplomat and an amazing negotiator. Legend has it that the relation btw Shaka and Moshoeshoe was very funny. Anytime Shaka attacked the Sotho's, they would run to the mountains and roll down big rocks towards the Zulu. Ultimately, the 2 kings agreed to have mutual trade between because they both has resources that either one didn't have i.e. the baSotho had horses, sheep and ostriches which the amaZulu were not familiar with. The Zulu had cows, goats and other interesting things that the Sotho didn't have...like access to the ocean. The funniest deal they made was that the Zulu men could have access to marrying Sotho women....you go to KZN, you'll find alot of these marriages even today and my husband and I are one of the examples. I'm a Sotho woman married to a Zulu man ❤️

I am great fan of yall anyway let me enlighten you a bit...In Natural Resource Economics there is what we call "resource curse phenomenon" Lesotho is very rich in resources as mentioned yet it experiences slow growth due to its governance. They only showed the bad sides of Lesotho the video is rather down grading and outdated too and theres a lit of cap. South Africa and Lesotho are the same to a certain extent, its true Economically SA is waaay ahead but in terms of living conditions its all the same, even less expesive. They are part of the common monetary area Lesotho, South Africa, Swaziland and Namibia.
    Much love 🇿🇦🇱🇸

many of the facts here a exaggerated, some of which are false even though they are somehow official stories; like the HIV stuff. Lesotho is simply the smaller part of Moshoeshoe's land which most of it is now part of RSA; like Freestate, Southern, Kwazulu-natal and Northern part of Eastern Cape all the way to the sea

I can't say authoritatively that Lesotho has more than one access road, but there is only one official border post. It's a main road going directly into the capital city so no mountains. There are however many way to get into and out of Lesotho whether you're driving, cycling or obviously walking. I just don't know if they are legal.. definitely not official. Coming from KZN, very few would be willing to go half way around. Basotho people cross on foot everyday everywhere

I appreciate their History of existece but i tink it's now time Lesotho,Swaziland and Botswana become one South Africa. The existece of this small countries robes our brothers and sisters all what is due to them in South Africa. We speak the same language and look alike and rob them the advantages of a more sophisticated and developed bigger county. Tell me any good reason Lesotho exist in 2023....Only disavantages for the odinary ppl. If those small parts were good they would have long been incorporated into their original main country out of artificial Apartheid benefiting borders making my brother a poor foreigner in our region.

I thoroughly agree with you. I'm a South African with ancestors from SA, Lesotho and Eswatini. My surname is in Setswana, but I identify as Sotho. My grandmother who helped raise me is Swati. I hate crossing borders to see my loved ones, only to feel like I haven't left SA.
